One of the reasons the Bee Gees had such longevity and were so successful is that they didn't stagnate, they tried to keep their sound contemporary and in touch with current trends. They often blended elements of what made them successful into their newer works as time went on. Robin never abandoned his soulful ballads, Barry never abandoned his falsetto, Maurice never abandon his mastery of high harmony and instrumentation. They kept reinventing themselves but never threw out the things that made them unique.

The first singer here is Robin, I love his voice. He isnt the one who sings the high falsetto songs but I prefer his voice. The Bee Gees have a very unique style which became very popular. Incidentally they'd never been to Massachusetts, not when they wrote the song. It was just a good fit, lyrically.

Love the Bee Gees' early music especially 60's-70's. You are hearing Robin Gibb's voice in this song "Massachusetts" from 1968. He also sang lead on "I Started A Joke", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" etc. Some of their other early hits were "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "To Love Somebody", "Holiday", "World", "And The Sun Will Shine", "Really & Sincerely", "Words", "The Singer Sang His Song", ""Lonely Days", "Melody Fair", "First Of May", "Give Your Best", "Lamplight" etc.

My favorite band was The Bee Gees. Then the Beatles, Temptations (although I would say they were a group instead of a band cause they didn’t play instruments). 🤷🏾‍♀️. But The Bee Gees have always been #1 in my book. They adapted their styles to fit the eras from the 60’s all the way through the 2,000’s…so you’re likely to get a different vibe from them based on what decade you’re listening to! They were great at keeping up with the time.

I know most of you are being introduced to The Bee Gees (The Brothers Gibb) from their disco era, but those of us who are purists know there is So Much More! to them than Staying Alive and Too Much Heaven. They actually began performing as kids in England then after moving to Australia as teenagers got a record label and became regulars on a tv show called Australian Bandstand performing covers and their own original music. Just as their very first number one song was topping the charts there, they went home to England and made the rounds at the different recording studios. Finally auditioning for Robert Stigwood a partner of Brian Epstein the manager of the Beatles. This song Massachusetts was the first hit for them on the British Charts. This is a later performance but sounds just as good. Need to check out more 60’s,early 70’s they mostly wrote for others in the 1980’s. 90’s and early 2000’s. You are missing out on more than you will ever know if you get stuck on just one era.

The Bee Gees actually started performing together in the late 1950's when they were like 8 and 12 years old. They have gone/evolved through several styles over the years. In the late 60's they came to America for the first time and were doing a sort of British Invasion style. In the very early 70's they were doing a tortured soul style (How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, I Started a Joke). By the mid 70's they had started doing the disco dance music style. They evolved into other styles in the years following disco. It's interesting to note that their most famous and most covered song came out in the mid to late 60's. Of course this is the incredible song "To Love Somebody!" This was a big hit for them, and a big hit for many others since then.

the Bee Gees were soulful R&B before disco and after disco. There are tons of songs with that sound. The disco era was pretty short and only accounts for a drop in the ocean of their songs.
My top artists of all time... hmm... Bee Gees, Beatles are both up there. U2 is as well. Like most really big fans of U2, I prefer Achtung Baby songs over The Joshua Tree songs while most casual U2 fans go for The Joshua Tree songs most. I feel they were to some degree, quite wrongly in my opinion, blamed for the disco sound. Almost all artists were coming out with disco songs. But the Bee Gees were so good that they were able to take it to the highest level. They became almost the symbol in a way. That was due to their talent being so great. But people got tired of disco and started to bad mouth it. Because the guys were so associated with it they bore the brunt of the backlash and it was not fair. They should have been recognized way earlier than they were for their achievements. It is a testament to them that they did fantastic music, kept it contemporary, and were able to span generations. I have a brother in law who absolutely loved all the disco. I was never a fan of disco. But we both appreciate them so much and we both own EVERYTHING they ever released. He and I can debate the merits of disco, but at the end of the day those brothers brought us together and we love all their 🎵.

Disco came a lot later in their career, almost accidentally, after they were given the opportunity to write and perform most of the music for a little dance movie called Saturday Night Fever, starring a young and athletic John Travolta... turned out to be a massive hit which pretty much kick-started that 70s disco craze, and revived the BeeGees flagging career, with a vengeance!

They did many genres throughout their career the "disco" era was only a short time in their long career. My top 5 bands of all time are : 1. Bee Gees - early to mid 70's era, 2. Bee Gees - post fever era (80's -00's), 3. Bee Gees - 60's Era, 4. Bee Gees - late 70's era, 5. Bee Gees - all other eras & tangental (late 58's, songs written for other artists, solo albums, kids' music, etc.). I'm only sort of joking - really though they are sort of like 5 bands in one. Try something like "Kiss of LIfe" or "For Whom The Bell Tolls" for some later songs. Try something like "NIghts on Broadway" or "Wind of Change" for some mid-70s vibe. For some softer ballads try "And the Sun Will Shine", "Lost in Your Love". Or maybe "Come on Over" for a touch of country.
