    I don't think it is lift off oversteer. You just got the weight off the suspension over the crest and then the small amount of steering input you did have took hold when the weight came back down on the front tires.
    If you had the throttle on and that happened it would have been ALOT worse.

    • @rowdyellenburg8525

      If you would have been on throttle your rear suspension would be under load providing more grip

    • @kierenalvarez
      @kierenalvarez Год назад +12

      @@rowdyellenburg8525 There is actually less grip available for cornering if you are using the grip for acceleration or even just to maintain a speed.
      The tyres only have a certain amount of grip, it doesn't care what it's being used for, that's up to the driver to divide it up between throttle or braking and cornering.
      If you are using 50% of a tyres grip for throttle than you only have 50% left for cornering.
      The fact the arse sits down under acceleration doesn't mean it's not using alot more grip, than that "sit down" rear axle force is providing on-top of what the tyre can naturally achieve.

Like the other guy said, your level of commitment doesn't correlate to the car maintaining control, commitment is not the issue here, it's entirely the fact that he slightly steered over the crest and the steering didn't grip until his front tires got weight again, thereby upsetting the car because the steering input was suddenly too much... i feel like you're gonna crash thinking stupid things like that, because you don't seem to have a very good grasp of car physics.

    I'm actually really surprised by what happened. I thought for sure it would be mid bend but understand why it happened. Lifting off before the crest shifted the weight to the front, then going over the crest the rear gets even lighter so it crept a little. You did will to catch it due to how unexpected it was. It's difficult to react to these sudden, unexpected moments and you honestly did well. Glad to hear you're OK and have learned from it.

    This is basically how my dad came very close to dying and now has lifelong injuries. Lift off over steer over a cresting corner. Car snapped around and sent him into a telephone pole and then a barbed wire fence (notable, given it was in a convertible). I had never seen so much blood in my life.

    I actually lost my S2000 in a similar situation;
    I wasn't speeding and I knew the road well, but it had just stopped sprinkling and the roads were damp with some dry patches.
    I was coming into a downward corkscrew (to the right and then left), slowed down before the turn, the weight shifted to the front, I felt the rear get light, it hit a slick spot and snapped around, I went full lock to the left, the front lost traction and plowed through the turn into a guardrail, the rear spun 180 degrees and slid backwards across the road, sideswiping the opposite. guardrail.
    The previous owner had also lowered the car and I think the stiffer springs and change in suspension geometry made the car ever more twitchy and unstable.
    Mind you, the SUV in front of me was going faster than me and had no issues 😅
    So, a combination of things struck all at once and resulted in one of the biggest heartbreaks of my life. The car was totaled and insurance didn't cover it, so I sold the car at a huge loss and have never been able to afford another S2000.
    At least the guy I sold it to was a collision repair specialist and completely restored the car, so hopefully it's still on the road somewhere.
    Every time I see an S2000 in the wild, my heart pangs.

    The AP1's will snap loose in a heartbeat with oversteer & being in to low of a gear going around a corner, can wheel hop. Too much torque for the tires to stick. I know, I wrecked an AP1 on a mountain 17 years ago.
    The AP2's are MUCH safer with 'VSA' standard. When your brain & foot & hands screw up, it can usually correct the mistake(s). By cutting the throttle (drive by wire), each individual brake can brake in whatever scenario required to correct the yaw. 50% left rear brake, 75% right rear, 50% front left, 40% front right, etc. They also come with a beefier rear stabilizer. You can turn VSA off, but I wouldn't recommend it unless on a track. It's saved me a bunch of times. Overreacts sometimes, but would rather have it do that then wait to long.. AP2 wrecks are much less then AP1's..

      I specifically bought an 06 to get VSA and DBW. All the 'purists' act like 04 and 05 are better, that having a bit more margin of safety is like some admission of a skill issue. On the street I am trying to get someplace alive and the roads and other drivers can make 'skill' moot in an instant.

I did not know the major dangers of flying over a big hill/jump with the S2K because the RWD. I just always lifted on big hills or hills on roads I didn't know, as I just knew it was sketchy & possibly put me in a out of control position.
      Glad that instinct was working. Front wheel drive cars are MUCH more forgiving on hills & driving too fast on turns as the tires talk on the corners when your at or close to the grip limit. As when we were teenagers with our parents cars some of us would try & get 'air' on certain hills..Of corse the roads were crazy curvy & had large inclines/declines, but usually not on the hills..Still surrounded by trees though 👎. Luckily none of us wrecked! I was in buddies car & he got enough air where it smacked the transmission on landing. Was an expensive fix. I rarely did it, but was arrogant in my 96 GSR N/A with about 15K put into it. On a couple hills I was going too fast & didn't like the out of control feeling until the front tires gripped. The steering wheel forcibly moved back & forth, but luckily not enough to send me to far one way or the other..After that I said, enough of that! Lot's of us on this channel are very lucky we didn't have a tragedy happen & have been able to learn from our mistakes or others..Plus the years of now gained experience.

    I’ve had two of these cars and tyres are more important than on any other car I’ve driven. My first car was a 2000 registration and had very average rubber. It was like driving on a skid pan in the wet! Had Toyo (can’t remember the detail) fitted which made it feel like a different car altogether and then tried several other recommended brands, all pretty good. I now have a 2003 car which had OEM Potenzas on it when I bought it in 2014. As this was a fairly immaculate car with half the miles of the other (which I also kept another 3 years), I found them a bit more progressive and more chilled driving experience. Also, I’m very conscious of run flats being a good thing if I have a blow out at speed in an S2000.

    I'm going to be a bit harsh, but try to not take it personally, this could keep you alive. We all share the roads, and I want you to be a good driver for everyone's sake.
    But first off, you're over-driving those tires. Drive within the abilities of yourself and your car. If your abilities are awesome, get better tires.
    Second, you're on public roads and it appears you are a VERY new driver. When it comes to areas where you can't see what's around the next curve or hill, prepare for that by slowing down. It doesn't take any of the fun out of it, and actually can be more fun to accelerate once you pull out of the corner. Your visibility is horrible in some places, and it looks like you are not familiar with this road at all. You can get familiar with a road first a few times, and learn the curves and challenges a bit. Know where the driveways and intersections are, pay attention to the time of day when people might be out more. Don't drive fast when the sun reduces your vision. It sounds like common sense, but I promise it's not.
    Third, something appears to be wrong with that car's setup besides the tires. Has it been in an accident and possibly not repaired correctly? I would get that checked out. Pay a professional at a track maybe you figure out what is wrong. And I would do that after an alignment and better tires.
    Fourth, don't be too proud to get lessons on handling your car. A lot of people die because we think we are such amazing drivers. Learn on the track first, and ideally only drive that way there.
    All of this advice comes from many of my own mistakes, and if someone gave me this advice a long time ago, I probably would have ignored it like you might ignore mine. But it's there if you want it. I don't in any way think I'm better than you.

    • @TforTouge
      @TforTouge  3 года назад +15

      Thanks man. I realize my mistakes and I've definitely learned from them. Next time I go out onto some backroads I'll be twice as cautious and the car will be better set up. That crest actually surprised me and I usually do slow down for turns and crests. That was probably my 7th run on that road, so yeah not fully familiar with it. I'm a fairly new to RWD cars, but I'm definitely somewhat familiar with the car at its limits at lower speeds since I've brought it to autocross a handful of times. High speed control is something I'm not familiar with though, so I was definitely driving out of my abilities here.
      The car hasn't been aligned since I got it and it's on all-season tires which would explain the instability. I do plan to get some time on a track come next season, but it's not very budget friendly and I can't afford that right now. Appreciate you taking the time to write this!

      @@TforTouge I agree with the above. I've owned my 01 S for three years now, and only after a year, some track days and almost 15k miles did I start to feel comfortable with it. And by comfortable meaning I can rotate the car how I want if when I want it. These cars can demand alot from the driver at the limit, because it is so well balanced, it can be unbalanced easily by your inputs. As well because of that balance, things like alignment and tires play a huge role in maintaining the mechanical half. Even uneven tire pressure can throw off the way the car drives due to the torsen differential.
      If you aren't already, just like the owners manual says check oil at every fueling. You should check your rear tire pressures. Once you have a proper alignment and good tires, when something as simple as unevenly inflated tires happens, you will feel it and know something is wrong. The S is a precision machine. Just give it time, enjoy it. But be safe on public roads.

      @@TforTouge Do yourself a big favor & buy the best dry/wet tires you can afford. No all season, especially for S.
      A good alignment & correct tire pressure & you'll think got an even better handling car, because you will! It handles well regardless, but to me with the Michelins it feels like I'm on rails. You can always over cook a corner going way to fast, & stepping on the gas won't get you out of it. Unless your an expert drifter & a lot of road.
      I let off the throttle slow as I can & not touch the brakes, while barely staying on the throttle. If you slam on the brakes, forget it. Of course it's true to keep your foot on the gas going through the corner & squeezing it more as your coming out. Happens to me if the turn is much sharper then expected & I didn't brake hard enough beforehand. That's what has worked for me & have been to a few track days with an instructor.
      If you're a really good driver, I mean expert level, some can drift through a corner if they get into a corner too fast. I'm not that talented & have been driving for 30 years. 20 of those were with front wheel drive cars though, which are MUCH more forgiving..I had a supped up Integra GSR & would push the hell out it & the tires would always tell me 'danger', 'danger' if I was taking a corner too fast..

    To me it looks like there's a little dip in the road before the crest. Hard to tell with the video, but that's what it looks like when you drove over it. Did you have stock suspension? Kind of surprised the car walked so much over such a little dip. Gotta keep your eyes on the road and anticipate how the road will unsettle your car, and input what the car will need as you get there, not after.

    Yeah, that was not liftoff oversteer. I have an MX-5. Four things need to happen, (1) going uphill, (2) turning fast and expecting the rear to slip, (3) a road saddle that points inward and (4) accelerating into turn.
    The weigh needs to be at the back tires, the car has to have horizonatal torque down the center axis and the the rear tires have to be unable to slip. When this happens one gets the reaction force at the front tires and the car turnds into the turn. It is basically outward slip intended for the rear ends up going the other way at the front and being inward slip.
    My advice be careful. Because when it happened to me it happened on a narrow mountain road in a blind turn. Luckily, no cars were going the other way. Because, in an instant the front of my car was in the other other lane. But, I hit the mountain and got the hell out of the road.
    The MX-5 is perfectly balanced front to rear. So, if it cannot slip at the rear, it very well may slip the other way at the front. Going downhill is okay and a road with a saddle that declines to the outside is okay. And loading the car with torque in the yaw axis can be very dangerous, even with the TCS turned on.

    If you're commenting about how dangerous and reckless that was, save your time. I learned a lot from this experience about driving close to the limit. The car is a lot better sorted now (200 TW tires, big front sway bar, and lots of negative camber) and is a lot less edgy. I keep my speeds below 70 now on back roads, and I am very cautious of crests like the one seen in the video. Learn from my experience and take it easy on the back roads!

    damn bro ive had some close calls in my AP1 but that was the sketch. I would try to remember that when driving an FR and especially the AP1, you want to be on throttle to keep the rear end planted and keep the car(rear tires) stable. In many scenarios, you may feel uncomfortable to get on throttle as opposed to lifting, but you will gain more confidence and grip when you put your foot down, keeping the car predictable.
    otherwise, you will become a better driver with this car, as long as you are observative and have a strong motivation to become a better driver

    Something is wrong with your alignment or suspension setup. Your lift off oversteer happens while your wheel is straight. Granted it's at a hill crest and deweighting the rear so likely experiencing bump steer as you are in an AP1, which brings me back to alignment, you can tune most of the bump steer out. As well, throughout the rest of the video there are times when your rear is stepping out creating tire noise when there shouldn't be. So you also have a tire issue, whether it be compound, or old tires.

    • @TforTouge
      @TforTouge  3 года назад +1

      I appreciate the insightful reply. My car is definitely nowhere a good setup. It's hasn't been aligned and it has all-season tires, but those two things are definitely next on my to-do list. What alignment specs would you recommend to combat this?

    • @DekLabs
      @DekLabs 3 года назад +1

      Hi there, You will likely need to dial bump steer yourself as most shops won't have bump steer plates, unless it is a race alignment shop. The plate is not that expensive. You can use this video as a reference, he's mapped out bump steer on AP1 rear
      ruclips.net/video/ZRUgx431wgc/видео.html
      As far as alignment specs, UK spec is pretty balanced and great all around. Regarding tires, if you want to continue running all seasons I suggest pilot sport 4 or similar. But the s really demands a sticky compound.
