    I like this theory. But I've always supported the theory that Bert and Mary are a couple. Originally, there was supposed to be a love song between them, but it was scrapped because Walt did not think it appropriate for a child's film. In the book, the chalk picture scene is actually a DATE between the two. I think they are old friends who fell in love. Bert can't travel with her because he's a muggle. So she visits him every time she has a job to do.

      In one of the songs he sings he mentions that "everyone's in love with Mary" which includes himself but he knows he can't keep her to himself. In a line from a song that she sings and featured in this vid she talks about "You'd never think about pressing your advantage" it could also mean that while he had several opportunities to have his way with Mary he never would and stayed a gentleman. Which would strengthen their friendship and trust with each other but ended up putting him further into the Friend Zone with her as it would seem from that song he never tried to change their friendship into anything more. Which Bert seems to hold her in a form of awe and something you can't hold onto or obtain as he describes her to the kids. But it's also obvious he has feelings for her.

  • @Eiivoli
    @Eiivoli 7 лет назад +284

    I can't help but mention this. "You'd never think of pressing your advantage." Is trying to force her into a relationship with him. That's what that older term means. They used it in reference to the old belief that men were stronger than women.
    You're also misinterpreting the phrase 'underneath your blood is blue'. To say that underneath is to refer to under your skin, not something that is a physical or actual attribute, but something that you have shown through personality. It means that Bert is rich in personality, or behaves like the highest class. A gentleman.
    Now, I've not read the books, but if the children can float with laughter too, I don't think it has anything to do with how they're related, unless you want to suggest that they're ALL related.

    • @KitsuneNeko
      @KitsuneNeko 7 лет назад +49

      Exactly what I was thinking. He never tried to force himself onto her and she respected him for it. She even praises him for it. But while praising him for being such a gentleman it's like she's reminding him harshly... but also kindly... that even though everyone's in love with Mary none can be with her... even Burt. She's reminding him he's stuck inside the "Friend Zone."

    • @SpiritBear12
      @SpiritBear12 6 лет назад +23

      Exactly. I think the floating while laughing is a metaphor for when you laugh, your heart and soul are lighter, therefore you can float.

    I always thought of the whole "underneath your blood is blue" really meant something along the lines of, although you may be poor, really you're a gentleman at heart, that sort of thing. More metaphorical than fact. I think he is poor, always has been really, and Mary and Bert were supposed to be romantically involved with one another, but P.L. Travers didn't like the idea so it was cut. :-) I like to think they're secretly married or something XD

      Unit Jax. I theorised in another comment that Mary & Bert may possibly be Mother & Son in secret. In my theory Mary is the Estranged Wife of the Old Bank Manager, It was rare even for the rich to get a Divorce in those days because it was an extremely costly process so Mary did the next best thing. She leaves him taking Bert with her & sending him to live with another relative on her side of the family rather than leave him with his dad to be miserable. She left her husband because he loved his job more than his own family, we know that the Bank Manager had a Son who worked in the office with him & would no doubt take over 1 day, no doubt the old man had brainwashed him from an early age as it was expected for the eldest son to follow in the father's footsteps & also if that was the case it would have hurt Mary extremely to leave him behind. Why does Mary look young while 'her husband' is haggard looking? Well, doesn't work pressure affect one's mental state? Stress causes people to look older than they really are, which means Mary actually LOVES the job she does meaning she hardly shows her actual age.

    I always felt he sorta grew up with her and not under her. Since "Pressing one's advances" could also mean that while he had several chances of getting romantic with her he instead played a gentleman and didn't take advantage of her. Because of this she respects him but it seems she placed him into the 'Friend's Zone' even if he'd rather there was something more... cus Everyone's in Love with Mary... after all.

    I think that the main character and source of everything is actually Bert. he is like the conscience of life in London as is the setting of the story. He draws and creates stories and characters as he sees fit. He knows the children all too well, as well. Therefore, he sees that they are in trouble and creates Mary as the help to come and rescue their unbecoming behavior. We see some evidence of this when she stand before him and he draws her shadow/silhouette on chalk. Also at the beginning of the story, Bert says that he feels something is about to happen that has happened before. Why does he know every bit of facet of people's lives? He goes around the plaza telling everyone's story through song. He is also the conscience sorta speak of Mr. Banks towards the end, when he makes Banks realize what he ought to do. Then, we finally see Bert again selling the kites. This is the happy ending to the story. The main character, in depth, is Bert. the true story of wind beneath my wings. Bert stands in the shadow of his imagination.

    • @labelledamedumanor4876
      @labelledamedumanor4876 6 лет назад

      John Panda. I have a theory too. What if they were actually MOTHER & SON? Picture this, Mary was the estranged wife of the Bank Manager & was miserable being married to a guy who loved his work better than his family. Plus he was installing the beliefs he went by into his eldest son, practically brainwashing him while the younger son who we know as Bert was left to his own devices & was regarded as somewhat of a tearaway by his dad. Mary walks out of the family home taking Bert with her, she leaves Bert with relatives on her side of the family while she goes off to hunt for a job as a Governess or Nanny. You see, although you could divorce back then it was rare to do so because it was far too expensive even for rich people. In case you're thinking why Mary is young looking while her 'husband' (if he is that) is old & haggard looking, what do you think many years of toiling in a job you actually may not like does to you? The only reason he doesn't give it up is that it was a family run business passed down from father to eldest son for who knows how long.

    "Because I was afraid to speak when I was just a lad, My Father gave me nose a tweak and told me I was bad."
    He was being punished for not speaking up, probably when he was spoken to. This has nothing to do with punishing an attitude of positivity.
    I really think you're taking the song too literally. It's kind of a nonsense song even though it does encourage that same positivity and social engagement. Burt's lines about meeting with heads of state sound to me like flights of fancy.

    We did this musical my freshman year at college, when the guy who played Bert gave his character's backstory he had said something like this, given research he also did,
    Bert did come to his home when he was a child and he did grow up in a higher class home. When Mary Poppins was at his home he developed a crush, similarly to how Michael does in the musical version. Mary didn't save his father as she does Mr. Banks, which causes Bert to run away. Bert then goes on to learn different things in life, as he sings in the transition from "Lets Hope She Will Stay" to "Spoonful of Sugar"
    "Me, I was told, when I was small, just learn a trade, so I learned 'em all"

He goes from place to place , job to job and meets people and tries to help them and fix their lives. Mary can be a bit snobby and abrasive but Burt is her opposite and is warm and comforting. Together they drive home the lessons the family needs to learn. Mr banks needed Burt in the movie to really see the truth as Burt said it in a quiet , simple and kind way.
    I fee that Mary and Burt have a sort of friendship that has been going on for many years and it verges on the romantic but they never commit because they have a duty to help others

    Nice theory! Bert was great. I can remember when I was a child (I'm almost 30 now) my grandmother played the Mary Poppins record. This beloved movie will most definitely be a part of my future children's lives. Both Bert and Mary are very inspiring, beyond wonderful people. Perhaps this is why I sought to ger along with so many adults growing up, I secretly imagined some were like the two of them. Actually, grandma was a lot like Mary. I'm grateful that she introduced them into my life as well!

    So how about Mary Poppins origin. I personally think she comes from Halloweentown. because in the Halloweentown movies there's a lot of similarities to Mary herself. such as Grandma Aggy having a simular bag to Mary and the fact that one of the ways to enter our world from Halloweentown is through the sky, and it would explain how Mary Poppins stays young before time almost doesn't exist in this parallel world. and who knows maybe Grandma Aggy and Mary Poppins even know each other

    Very interesting theory especially with Burt's up bring . I like it however o have to disagree with that Mary Poppins was Burts nanny. For starters the are both about the same age. But I do propose that instead Burt and Mary Grew up together. That he's the only one who recognized her coming back because he was there when she herself discovered it herself. It'll also explains why he recognizes her hat from her shadow. She's always worn it. I propose she loved him but then discovered with her powers she has to leave when the wind changes. That is why she's practically perfect, because she loves Butt and the children she cares for. That when she has a chance. She goes back when the wind changes.... at least those are my thoughts.

    I have a new Harry Potter and the cursed child theory: Delphini is a horcrux.
    Delphi is not Bellatrix' daughter, because she was 47 when she died and it would be unlikely if she gave birth with 47. Furthermore Delphini said that she was born in Malfoy Manor a few days/weeks before the battle of Hogwarts, which means that Draco must have known that Bellatrix was pregnant and he most likely knew that Voldemort is the father. But if this is true Draco would have told someone after the battle of Hogwarts.
    I think that Delphi isn't the daughter of Bellatrix and she isn't the daugther of Voldemort either, because she is another Horcrux. That's why she can fly and speak parseltongue.
    I have no idea who her real parents could be, but I have a theory about when and why Voldemort created this Horcrux.
    It was on May 2, a few hours before the battle of Hogwarts and shortly after Voldemort realized that Harry was searching for his Horcruxes.
    After he looked for the ring and realized that it was destroyed, he created a new Horcrux. Voldemort didn't know that Harry was a Horcrux and he thought that Harry would be thinking that a person can't be a Horcrux and he knew that Harry would never kill someone (except Voldemort himself) especially a little baby, so he made Delphini his new Horcrux. Maybe she was the daughter of a different Deatheater, but she wasn't Bellatrix' daughter or Voldemort's. That's why Delphi has the ability to fly and to speak parseltongue, because a part of Voldemort lives inside of her and this part made Harry's scar hurt. And since Delphini didn't die at the end of CC this means that Voldemort could still come back.
    And being a Horcrux would make her a cursed child.

      Laura that's a brilliant theory

    • @jessesmith4167
      @jessesmith4167 6 лет назад

      Maybe. I've not read the Cursed Child myself, but it strikes me that making a child into a Horcrux is the exact sort of thing he might do when faced with the possibility Harry might find all of the Horcruxes. Think about it. This is a guy who split his soul seven ways to ensure he could continue to survive. While he is arrogant enough to believe he could live forever, he is also a planner, he takes precautions, hence the six intentional horcruxes. He prepared for the possibility that someone might learn of the secret and succeed in destroying them. Furthermore, at one point he says "I, who have walked further along the path towards immortality than any other" At first this statement seems like pure arrogance until you look at it more closely. "Walked further along" would seem to indicate that he recognizes he is still mortal, if difficult to kill permanently. Upon realizing Harry not only knew about the horcruxes but had destroyed not one but three of them, I think it perfectly plausible he might have taken steps to protect himself in the event Harry succeeded in getting at the others.
      And why would he tell anyone? Voldemort never truly trusted anyone but himself after all. He never told Lucius what the Diary really was. The only one who half-way understood was Wormtail, and only because Voldemort needed his help to perform the ritual of resurrection. Crafting the impossible to confirm story that Delphini was in fact his daughter would have disguised her true purpose, while simultaneously setting her on a path that might lead her to him someday. When it was safe to return. When no one was watching or expecting it.

    The theory of Old man Doss being Bert’s dad would then make the song Bert sings to Mr. Banks toward the end seem like he is talking about what happened to himself when he was a kid. “You gotta grind grind grind at that grindstone, though childhood slips like sand through a sieve. And all too soon they’ve up and grown and then they’ve flown. And it’s too late for you to give.”

    Poppins is a Ravenclaw graduate that visits and test the magic of potential wizards and witches to come by disguising herself as a nanny. That's why the children were able to snap their fingers and cause the room to clean. She put her wand into an enchanted walking stick and has a bag of holding. She happened to be in the area where her old squib friend Bert and her elder wizard Uncle Albert who could very well be an ex professor of Hogwarts. She does get in a bit of trouble revealing her magic to the Muggles ( aka All of the Chimney Sweepers or the Banks parents) but seems to be overlooked by the ministry quite a bit.
