    People who say that this Star Trek show is too PC needs to rewatch the original Star Trek cause damn that show was progressive and it was made in 1966! And also to the people who are saying that every movie/show is forcing a gay story line need to take a step back. I'm a lesbian and you have no idea how many straight couples I have to see everywhere in movies and shows where they get their happy endings, while character who are part of the LGBTQ community always gets tragic endings. Now that shit ain't fair at all.
    Imagine seeing someone who is like you on screen and every time you see yourself you feel understood and not alone for a change, and then to see it all gets ripped away every SINGLE time is freaking heartbreaking.
    Star Trek is for people who feel alone, misunderstood, people who have hope for a brighter more united world. It's for those who dream about exploring the universe. It's a show about love, hope and dreaming and that is for every single person in this world.

      To begin with, I don't disagree with you but here is the different behind TOS Star Trek and Discovery. TOS balance the progressive with the storytelling and other things like action. It was also about how the future would be better. As for Discovery, which is darker and grittier, it doesn't fix that concept the future is going to be better. Not even talking about the issues that it had canon.

    I absolutely love the bond and closeness between cast and crew, it seems they take the message of love and unity seriously, I often wondered how an actor chooses a project to be a part of and so what made them choose Star Trek. I’d like to know in what ways within their own lives do they relate to the characters they play, and how has these roles challenged who they are as a person.

    Whichever time line they inhabit I really think that Pike will be an inspirational leader in much the same way that Kirk was. One thing I noticed in anything Pike appeared in he instilled a great deal of loyalty from his crew. It will be interesting to see the journey he takes to become that person.

    I am excited about the second season. However, I was not excited to hear that Spock will play another role in this franchise. I am all spocked out and want these franchises to go forward without the need to look to Spock for influence. It's okay to do one or two episodes like in TNG, but not the whole season! Discovery deserves to stand on their own feet with original stories and characters!

    • @kathrynw3

      Exactly how does a reboot stand on their own feet?...If they wanted those things then it should have been set in the future not in kirk's time at least then all of the changes would make sense instead you have a bastardized version of star trek that is pure garbage

      I am with you on the SPOCK level @fredrika27 but I will approach Season 2 with a open mind and heart. I am really excited to see the new complexities of season 2 and Captain Pike. Now this is where I am going to sound dumb when & where on the STU timeline do these adventures take place? Since the cinematic version with Kirk is in an ALTERNATE reality than the first TV show, when the adventures of Michael Burnham and the Starship Discovery was announced I had this specific question. Hopefully y'all will enlighten a brotha.

    "Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms. […] If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there." -Gene Roddenberry
    Anybody who says Star Trek shouldn't be "political" or "SJW" has no fucking idea what Star Trek has always been about.

      @bryanharris5823 6 лет назад +6

      Exactly. It's been sobering to realize how many people have taken the metaphor of Klingons and Vulcans and internalized it as a lesson to be more tolerant of Klingons and Vulcans, and not the people with whom we share a planet.

    Star Trek is about Exploration, understanding the science of being human, challenging the moral compass, getting us to stand up for a better tomorrow, visualizing what a world of logic, and hate, and science, and religion would look like, also realizing how a future evolution of our species would push us in the direction of greatness. Star Trek has created scientists, men, and women of science, people who have whole hardheartedly dedicated their lives in bettering human species, and for the most part, succeeded. STD goes against everything Star Trek stands for. STD is a drama, opera, and an action series. It is an evolution of Star Trek universe, yes for the most part, but going against the tide of the original and subsequent series that made the show what its die-hard fans know and love. STD, and following shows in the Star Trek universe, please don't make this about money. Our world is going bananas, and the last thing we need is a show that encourages it.

      Not to mention Voyager's 7-year "get home" long game. Also, it is clear that Enterprise was going to play the long game with the Temporal War Arc until it turned out to be unpopular so they jettisoned it at the start of season 4. Discovery is simply playing a different type of long game, one that relies less on 1/2 episode one-offs contributing to the long game and more on a full season/multi-season arc. But even that is not a first for Star Trek. Enterprise did that with the Xindi arc, just with more of a half-way between one-offs and a season arc than Discovery.
      EDIT: Clarified the wording of the last sentence.

      Babylon 5 did it first. Some would say they also did it better. Since Babylon 5 had synopses for over 20 episodes when the project was pitched to Paramount for consideration 5 years before the release of DS9, I would say that if any series deserves to be referred to as a pioneer for that type of show, it is Babylon 5! At the very least, DS9 was "inspired" by B5...
      PS: Love DS9, definitely one of the best incarnations of Trek.

    I thought season 1 was a series that found itself as the episodes went by and from at the beginning I was thoroughly disappointed. However, I stuck by it and I feel it's already earned its place. Hopefully, like Ds9, The next Gen and Voyager each series will get better and better as the characters develop.
    As for the issue that people have addressing characters with flaws and the apparent feminist agenda and that because humanity has come so far and has supposed to have evolved argument - just remember - the Vulcans had their issues with humans in Enterprise, Bones had preconceptions and prejudice of Vulcans in TOS and there were other characters who showed that as well, even in the Next Gen such as in the epusode Drumhead, it tackled prejudice of Romulans, Ds9 tackled African-American history in such a positive way and in a sense put it into the context of the 24th century and the less than admirable characteristics of Sisko in his espionage in it's only a paper moon. What I love about Discovery is that the aspiration of perfection is there, at a time set before the TNG era and so humans aren't perfect, they do struggle just as TOS era did as well and Archer and his crew did in Enterprise. It's more ballsy and less optimistic but there are series still to come which may show more and more optimism like series past also.

      On the other-side,Star Trek, if they only given as much though to plot elements as for jamming in all those agendas, show wouldn't be lacking compelling story and plausible ideas, instead you've got "space sonar" thing LOL, that's just lazy and stupid to the point where i was thrown off the show! i watched only 4 episodes , the only character i liked was the alien crew member . i didn't LOVE him but he was the least annoying also i liked his lines better . The main character looks great but i don't buy that she was raised by vulcains , the way she acts is way too emotional ; i love the actor who played the psycho captain but i didn't like him in this , he was a very boring villain to me . everyone else I don't even remember Oh yes the asian lady that died , i liked her . too bad she died . she gave the show the kind of star trek energy i was expecting . overall i was not impressed . the main character is the reason i started watching , i knew her from TWD . ( i love TWD so any character that comes from there makes me want to watch what they do next , like black panther or the last jedi - hated the last jedi) but overall she did not impress me either . i'd love to see that actress in some type of romantic role , to see if she got that range in her . she needs to be given roles where she acts more sweet and smily , it would fit her better than action/ sci fi . i don't like seeing her pout all the time

      The Unfortunate thing is that neither one of you stayed for the entire season. What was missed here was the development of ALL characters as you approached the finale. Spoiler alert @lili ks the asian lady (Michelle Yeoh) did come back into the series. @TimTimmers as I stated above you will have to stick it through to the end to really appreciate or in your case maybe just a positive nod to what went on in Season One.

      Becuase, this show 'shit' on Star Trek. Where is the positive view of humanity (i.e. humanity is getting better)? No this is a show that if you remove 'Stark Trek' from the title, wasn't be confused for Star Trek.
      Not to mention the numerous issues the show caused within Star Trek canon. For example, how they can be female Captains when their a TOS episode that deals with the very fact there are not female Captains.
      But Enterprise, which met with the same mixed reaction, have some of the same issues. If you watch TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY, TNG era is much more progressive than TOS. This is keeping with the version of Star Trek. However, this means going backward mean this era would be less progressive. For example, Enterprise could have been about humanity overcome their bias against the aliens and the aliens overcoming their bias against human, i.e. learning to live together.
      But Discovery, is a clean example that Hollywood isn't creative. They don't know about to tell good stories, because they're too worries about making a profit and not pissing groups off.

      I miss ds9. It was the only trek series where EVERY cast member was fully developed
      Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura were very underdeveloped in TOS. Chusher, Geordi and Troi on TNG. Kes, Neelix and Kim on VOY. Hishi and Mayweather on ENT.
      Nog got 5x as much development as Kim and he wasnt even a main character. Garak, Dukat, Weyoun, Zek, Yates etc.. were all guest start who were more fleshed out than a lot of main cast in other series.
      Sisko was the only captain that was really explored and developed(Picard was somewhat as well) as a human being and not just a starfleet officer. Janeway, Kirk(mostly), and Archer we only really saw as starfleet captains. Sisko was a starfleet captain, an emissary, a huge baseball fan, a chef, a dude with anger issues, a widower, and perhaps most important, a father. He was the most human and relatable lead a trek series ever had

    This is hands down the worst Star Trek cast ever. Sonequa Martin-Green's acting makes Shatner's work look like Stewart's. My favorite Trek is DS9 with a black Captain and the strongest women in any Trek. I love diversity in all forms and my disdain for STD is not centered around any agenda except the agenda of making money. In this day and age all that matters is the idiotic, non-discerning, action hungry millennial market who believes that wide eyes and dropped jaws equals good storytelling and that long and boring speeches that merely plagiarize what's come before makes for strong characters. CBS and Kurtzman caters to them perfectly. News flash... None of them give a crap about the legacy of Trek! They're not Trekkies/Trekkers. They're employed actors who are lucky that they got a season 2. Trek casts of old had a backbone and admitted to not giving a crap about Trek until they were in it. But, as with all aspects of STD (and it truly is) integrity is nonexistent in this once groundbreaking, revolutionary and formerly integrity based franchise. RIP Star Trek 1966-2002.

      Sorry Stills, my bad. That's flashback anger, long story, see the commentary accompanying the only Trek vid posted to my account (for a profile in neurotic rage). PTSD anger at "everyday sadism," as it's called in the lit. There really isn't a moral justification for being rude to anybody, even people tearing down the good object (aka Freud's definition of envy), and, yeah, it's tiresome receiving indignant replies to comments I've left while in Klingon rage. Thing is, I'm usually triggered by some pretty smelly shit, for what it's worth, but I should assume a gaslit bystander (apath, the 96%) and not a gaslighter (sociopath/narcissist, the shit-kicking 4%). I swore off RUclips Trek commentary for Just This Reason. Tried dipping my toe back in with the recent news ... nope, I'm still too hot. Back in a few months.
      Hold off on condemnation until after a failed second season numb to feedback. I've typed that sentence soooooo often. CBS just messaged in full caps that they heard the fans. We're not getting another generation of Trek on TV before the food crisis hits and everything goes down the crapper. Do the math ...

    • @Stunnthewombat
      @Stunnthewombat 6 лет назад +4

      Sound travels at 343 m/s, light 299 792 458 m/s. The ships in star trek travel at incredible speeds. So do some basic maths and once again figure out why sonar in space is a very stupid idea for tracking ships in a show like star trek. These writers have no idea about science, the incredible distances involved and they proved this in the second season promo with the red dots on the map spread out at 30 000 light years apart. So using our current tec if you are at the centre of the objects it would take 15 000 years for the light to reach you. Even with the star trek sensors which once again defy reality even on the old shows they would not be able to detect those signatures. That one little map also implies that Starfleet has or will (in this upcoming season.) travel alot further into the space then even on the voyager series. They have no idea about science and could not even be bothered trying to keep any continuity. They need Better writers.

    • @reculture
      @reculture 6 лет назад +1

      Lol you guys... I mean "sonar in space" makes me wonder do they have competent consultants on show at all? Because the whole "sonar in space" idea is stupid but for the whole different reason then which you referred for. We don't even have to involve ships speeds beside one major overlook:
      * Sonar is using sound, which is mechanical type of vibration! *
      What that means is that unlike light, sound *can't spread through effin vacuum of space! * It needs medium/matter to propagate through, like air, water or whatever... that's how sound, mechanical vibration, propagates from source, across molecules of matter all the way up to our ear drum which is sending stimuli to our brain using nerves...

    • @Stunnthewombat
      @Stunnthewombat 6 лет назад +1

      I totally agree with you. That is another reason i thought the whole idea was dumb. While the sounds that Hoehner Tim was talking about is actually the background radiation of space being interpreted as sound. I just could not have been bothered typing yet another reason why the whole idea sucks.

    been a trek fan since the 70's, up until this series, star treks worst series was DS9. (Soap opera in space)
    So to out do the horror show, DS9, they came out with this poor excuse for a series. The very Best way to describe this series is, Star Trek Diversity.
    The bullshit, we never needed in star trek, is here.
    The only glimmer of light this series had, was made into a bad guy and, killed in a parallel dimension.
    Such a shame.
    I am sure there will be people spouting praises at how progressive and liberal this show is. There was tons of that for DS9.
    BUT
    When it comes right down to what makes STAR TREK so amazing and great, this show doesn't have that, at all.
    This series sucks so much, and so often, i am thinking of buying it jewelry..
