- Today we're watching the newest SpongeBob Movie, Sponge on the Run! We're huge SpongeBob fans around here, but unfortunately this Paramount Plus original doesn't seem to have the same charm or humor of the first two movies. Despite it's good animation and decent plot lifted from "Where's Gary?", some don't see the movie as anything more than a glorified ad for the spinoff show "Camp Coral". Also Keanu Reeves is in this movie. Doesn't make it good though.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run - 2020
When SpongeBob SquarePants' beloved pet snail Gary goes missing, a path of clues leads SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick to the powerful King Poseidon, who has Gary held captive in the Lost City of Atlantic City. Imma be honest. If SpongeBob literally looked at the camera and just said "Watch Camp Coral on Paramount plus!" I would have actually found it funny.

Kamp Koral sucks, but people also fail to mention whenever they complain about the "retcon" that it's literally explained in like episode 20 to be Sandy meddling with time.

@@kiartoons2010 To be fair, they're made by two incredibly different teams. Animation team got more creative liberties and wanted a more stylistic approach. But the writers...? I'm certain are just- part of the massive corporation who only care about money.

Fun fact: the story for this movie went through development hell; originally being about rescuing Gary from king Neptune in live action; than it was about rescuing Gary from tyrannical alien cats, and than they went back to the rescue Gary from Neptune plot but worse.
That second idea would honestly make the “save Gary” plot fit a whole lot better.
The alien cats plot makes me forgive the episode where they established Patrick and Gary were distant cousins descended from royalty.

In hindsight it was honestly for the best - post-Endgame MCU is the most middling series of movies/television in recent memory

The only reason why this film was made was to justify the existence of the Kamp Koral prequel series. Which btw doesn’t even follow the same story as what is established in this movie. So really, this movie doesn’t have a legitimate reason to exist.
Goes against Stephen Hillenburgs wishes too. No spin-offs or prequels he said…
To quote from Steven Hillenburg, "they are going to want to make a SpongeBob baby show at some point, that's when I'm out." And well he certainly WAS out all right but that still doesn't justify what paramount did to his legacy.

The thing that annoys me the most is that this film looks beautiful, yet even as a kids film, it amounts to "an ad for a meh show and a plot concept they've sorta already done."
I’ll give the movie this: It did predict the rise of AI with Sandy’s robot and she shows no concerns over her friend losing his fry-cooking job to a machine.
It didn't exactly predict it. It came out in 2020, when the rise of AI and machine-automated things was already kind of relevant.

The style of animation and the framerate even match the one of the in-game television of Cyberpunk 2077, the Prequel of this Spongebob movie. In the German version of CP2077, Skippy the talking pistol was voiced by the same person which did the voice acting for Spongebob. So spongebob was a pistol in his previous life

"the power of friendship" trope only works when your characters have a strong, good friendship and are good to each other. but like, most of the characters in Spongebob are awful to each other, that's like, the WHOLE THING. Mr. Krabs sold Spongebob's soul for a single dollar, Squidward is a cynical narcissist, Spongebob and Patrick may be close with each other but they still hurt each other and others with their naivety and ignorance all the time. that's why it feels like it'd be something a regular Spongebob episode would parody, because you just can't have the power of friendship with characters that treat each other like this.

the power of friendship trope is honestly one of the most oversaturated tropes in all of entertainment and i'm just tired of seeing it in general.
It’s like they saw the few scenes of Spongebob and Patrick in the original movie and the one scene at the end and said, “That’s it.”

This entire film reeks of "how do you do fellow kids" energy.
The references to Keanu Reeves, Snoop Dogg, Take On Me and Skype/FaceTime reek of corporate executives trying to pander to the youth. The character writing is off at points; Patrick doesn't talk like himself at all and the ending is just so overly sappy that it's unbelievable that it made its way into a SpongeBob movie.
We could have gone with out this whole... MOVIE.
The first one was a genuinely great movie with a surprisingly heartfelt story about accepting your inner child.
The second movie's plot was all over the place, but it made up for it by just being really funny.
The third movie... exists.
no the third movie is absolute cringe, they could've saved it if they changed these things: get rid of tumbleweed reeves, get rid of the random live action characters that have absolutely no business being in the movie, get rid of the boring forced jokes and the mostly boring driving scenes (mostly as in that's most of what happens), make spongebob be going on an actual adventure for an actual reason, if the plot is still gonna be poseidon takes garry it shouldn't be for a stupid reason like him using garry's slime to make himself look younger (which is a sentence i never thought i'd say and probably will never say again) and the ending is just...... no
@@montymole2 yes I see your point but you gotta add layers to it I don’t mind the first flashback but add on the characters, show plankton almost taking over the world,make SpongeBob and the rest of the gang likable, show that Gary likes this new lifestyle because of a certain conflict that happened to SpongeBob (maybe because he recks the entire house because plankton replaced one of the cans that has hyper sugar making him have a sugar rush causing him to destroy some of the furniture) and also have the lost city be lost

It sucks because the first movie made fun of that plot trope, that "the greatness was inside you all along". This movie is peak 2020 and so it's already aged badly.

Funfact about Camp Coral: Stephen Hillenberg, the creator of Spongebob, did not want any spin offs with Spongebob. After his passing in 2018, we now have several spin offs and more movies on the way

it's an interesting phenomenon how they made this movie pretty much right after Stephen Hillenburg died, and they not only reused a bunch of already used tropes from both the spongebob series and the episodes, but they actually just completely forgot so many details that the series already filled in, such as how spongebob and sandy met
they literally met in season 1 episode 1, Tea at the Treedome, that's already established, and yet they made an entire series about something that's just blatantly wrong, this movie and the spinoff based off of it are both literally rooted in ignorance

(It's not like the show hasn't depicted hotels before, or buildings that fall outside the "metal cylinders and cubes" template. There's a diner made out of a sunken ship, and a grocery store that looks like a big barrel!) And if it doesn't matter, get rid of the "hotel" sign and just let us assume it's a normal generic building.
