    Looks great you’ve inspired me to get this bed extender 😊

    I spent the extra money for the Yakima "Long Arm" extender. It works great, is lighter, and addresses all of the issues you point out. Worth the extra money IMHO. I run 2 straps in the bed an one on the Long Arm. Takes about 5 minutes to load and unload. Good point on the security cable if traveling and you'll be leaving the yak exposed. I have a 5' short bed and I can put any 10'-14' boat in there and transport with confidence.

    Your right about bad people. I was wade fishing once and kept one of my poles peeking out of my truck bed window. Them SOB with me watching from in the water took it out and I was too far out to anything but just watch

    I appreciate this video; my dad copied the ideas (crossing the straps & storing the extender inside the cab, etc.), this helped us plan , on how we now transport our flats canoe - Stay Safe in the TX Outdoors!

    Is it safe to secure and transport two kayaks using this bed extender?

    Strapped the way it is it’ll be a miracle those handles last a year or more. Should of saddled with cam straps at the T-post and over the midship at the corners of the bed.

    Can you transport this at night? do you need some type of light on the kayak for visibility?

    My father built a bed extender for me, but slightly different. He came out of the receiver hitch about a foot, then went up at an angle. His thinking was that crossing ditches or low areas would cause the extender to drag. First ditch on the way to a farm pond, i crossed the ditch and got out and looked. He was right. His design is the bomb. Also made the top horizontal bard the same width as the inside of my fenders so i could haul other things.

      That's a good idea. I haven't run into any major ditches or the like. I am not a welder, so I went a pre-made route. Having that skill set would definitely come in handy, especially with multiple yaks.

      The "T-Bone" is rounded at a radius beginning at the receiver, all the way up to the "T" to address that problem. Also, point the truck DOWNHILL at the ramp when sliding it into the bed. Thank me later.

    Bought one from Harbor Freight to transport my Old Town BigWater 132 PDL and at the highest setting, the crossbar doesn't even touch the bottom of my kayak. Pretty useless for me. I tried to save a few bucks which didn't work out. I ended up getting a Boonedox T-Bone instead.

    I have 7 feet from back of front seat in my Jeep Grand Cherokee to the trailer hitch. If a Hobie Outback is 12' 9" would 5' 9 " work out the back on this? I just don't want to deal with putting it on the roof and breaking down for short haul. I can clamp down the back hatch.

      @tan dan I use the Boondox Groovy Extender for my PA 14. Works great for short trips to the launch. I bungee down the back hatch and strap it on.

    Hey man, I live in Texas and just got a 13 ft perception kayak fairly knew to owning and transporting one. I didn’t know I had to have a red flag if it stuck out a certain length, so I bought a red rag lol but I shouldn’t have any problems being stopped by Texas police or dps if I get a bed extender like that and red reflectors? Have you had any problems with the police?

    How long is your Kayak ? How far out does it extend out of the truck bed,

    • @chrisdoesfish7722
      @chrisdoesfish7722  6 лет назад +1

      It's a Field and Stream Shadowcaster, so it's 12'3" (if memory is correct). It extends out about 5'. From the bed extender it sticks out another 18" or so.

    Most thieves of opportunity don't have a $100 set of bolt cutters to cut that cable and as you said the locking hitch pin will help . My paddle breaks down so I put it in the truck with my other gear . But a big rock will get them in my truck if they want bad enough . If I'm going to be on a week long river run I have someone drop me off and pick me up . Because people suck ,,, hate to have to say .

    Wow!!!
    Very practical, however the fun police in Australia would give me a fine for that which would probably be more expensive than a kayak trailer.🙄

    • @rickyellard8297
      @rickyellard8297 3 года назад

      Yes Australia has overhang rule, so not legal unfortunately in Australia. I watch Dash Cam crash's from America, haven't seen any rear ends with Kayaks yet.
      Its based on percentage of wheel base can overhang rear of vehicle. Axle space say 2m, maximum over hang 1m, but that's from behind rear axle, not back of tray. So either roof mount or trailer I'm afraid here.
