    Hi Myk.
    Nice work on this topic as usual.
    But seeing you adding manually all this points, I remember a custom I did for a friend.
    Here are the terms of it :
    Script: X-Raym_Insert markers at grid lines in time selection.lua
    Script: X-Raym_Set selected tempo enveloppe points value.lua
    Script: Mordi_Create tempo-map from markers
    Maybe it can spare a bit of time.
    Bye.

      Thank you. I looked for something to insert the points for me, but obviously didn't find what I was looking for. Definitely doesn't mean it doesn't already exist, but I likely just wasn't searching for the correct term(s)

      @@LetsTalkAboutReaper Happy to help you in return, Myk.
      Only thing is to have the grid set accordingly.
      I don't know how to export a custom, so I gave it that way. You'll manage to create it, I think. 😊
      Bye.

    The vast majority of my client work needs tempo mapping. I made a custom action that moves the edit cursor forward 1 measure and inserts a tempo marker. I also made both a menu button and a custom keystroke. I start by pressing the button and adding tempo markers until I see an obvious discrepancy. I adjust the marker to match the waveform and then use the keystroke or button an keep moving forward. I can now edit a 5 minute song in less than 30 minutes.

    Great video. Special with video (time grid). In Cubase I will use Auto Create Tempo map from (Kick) track. The tempotrack file can be imported in Reaper with script. I use the reaper click track to create a Subtitle track for Davinci Resolve for video edit on the beat with a Reaper script. For GrandMA Lighting control you can generate smpte time list with a special plugin.

    I kept thinking, "why doesn't he make the waveforms bigger so he can do it more visually?" and then BAM it happened at 16:46. :-) It's definitely a tedious process but probably made a world of difference for tracking.

    Something I've thought of but never done is to flatten a newly-warped grid to a steady tempo, record the overdubs, and then restore the warped grid causing all the new tracks to audio-warp and conform to the original performance.

    • @AlexMittsVOID
      @AlexMittsVOID Год назад

      I came to ask about this exactly. How do you do this? Tempo mapping is great, but what if we want to take an out of time performance and "flatten" as you say? Like an out of time pianist that you want to build a song around. But you want to build it TO a click. I imagine you tempo map, but then how do you flatten that to a standard grid?

    • @LetsTalkAboutReaper
      @LetsTalkAboutReaper  Год назад

      You could use stretch markers or cut and slip edit, whichever best suits the performance. Tough to give a real good answer without hearing the source. I slip edit all the time with drums and guitars that were recorded to a click but slightly out of time, but I have not tried to straighten up a performance that was recorded "free form."

  • @davidtyndale9557
    @davidtyndale9557 Год назад +1

    Great stuff, thanks! But if you re record the drums, you'll still need to play to unexpected tempo shifts, no? Only this time there will be a click track of unexpected tempo shifts? Im just saying theres probably a bunch of drum editing to do either way. Really interesting to see the tempo mapping in action.

    • @LetsTalkAboutReaper
      @LetsTalkAboutReaper  Год назад +1

      I see where you're going but at the very least, with a click, I have something for my ear to lock onto easier. As close as I was, in would be easier to slip edit, but I didn't track for the whole song, I just played a portion to test. So either way, I'mma end up re-tracking.
      I second guessed myself a lot when tracking due to the lack of a defined click of some sort, as it's much easier to hear than the rendered song

  • @AudioMuttStudios

    Yo Mike! Thanks for this one man I needed it. Hope you're doing well. One thing I've been curious about, but scared to try, is what happens if you switch your timebase back after you've aligned the grid to the audio? That's something I used to do in PT for drums (especially midi drums). I'd align the grid to the first down beat of each measure then switch my tracks to tick based and commit them from Bar/beat markers to tempo ruler markers. I then decide on places where I want tempo changes to occur (speeding up a bit on the choruses for example) and set those specific spots to what I want (EX: 110 vs 109.78) then delete all the extra tempo markers. The result is more regular and stable drums that aren't totally quantized and fluctuate throughout the song, but still feel tight and can be easily followed for overdubs. In PT it can create artifacts, but REAPER seems to be better about that. My current drummer dislikes playing to a click so this has become a more needed thang to have in my toolkit. Your video helped a lot so thanks again. Have a good one!

    • @LetsTalkAboutReaper
      @LetsTalkAboutReaper  Год назад

      audio that is already in place should not move if you change timebase after editing, However, it will shift if you make time signature or tempo edits after the fact, if that makes sense. If things go wonky, you can always undo.
      I also have automatic timestamped backups run every few minutes, and i tend to do "save project as" when i get to a new phase in editing or mixing (ex: song title - drum editing, song title - vocal tracking, etc) so my automatic backups also have the "phase" in the file name and i can easily go back in time.
      You can also set the timebase on a per item basis. Lot's of options, sometimes too many ;)

  • @limouxine33
    @limouxine33 Год назад +1

    You made this look easy. Man I have trouble with recording my guitar parts cause my signatures might change and I don't know if. and it's like when I play to a click depending on the song it changes the way I play it and hear it. This is my biggest problem rn.

    • @LetsTalkAboutReaper
      @LetsTalkAboutReaper  Год назад +1

      You know, I'm not really sure 🤔
      I know that with tempo markers, you can set the option to allow gradual changes, so my assumption is that I may be able to right click the tempo marker in the grid and select that option, then adjust the point on the envelope.
      I've not tested this theory, but it makes sense in my head. I'll try tomorrow and report back, if you haven't already got it sorted.
      Thanks for watching!

      There is a check box “Gradually transition tempo to next marker” at the sixth out of seven option items in the "Edit Tempo/Time Signature… " Dialog. BUT! I STILL cannot use it well. When I tried to use guradually option, I already tempo-mapped entire song tempo-mapped normally, in other words, not using “Gradually..” Option. Entire song! I think such a situation happens for everyone. Then I want to change some bars with the Gradually option ON. That operation broke the tempomap after that bar!!! I don’t know the proper way or workaround yet. However when I use that on such as the Chopin’s sheet from the beginning, I can use the Gralually option well just as I think.

    • @mimori.com_
      @mimori.com_ Год назад +1

      The seventh or the last opetion in the “Edit Tempo/Time Sigunature” dialog, “Allow a partial measure before this marker” is the useful option but I can’t tame still.
      The specific tempo map points which has this option “ON/checked” “IGNORE” the preceding tempo length definition. So you can move that time map point on the 3/4 in the preceding bar that time map definition is 4/4. This does not change the preceding tempo “definition” still 4/4 but changes real rendering to 3/4. Better explanation is welcome!
