We recently experienced an engine overfill by the dealership. My son and his wife have jet skis with supercharged engines. After being serviced at the dealer he took his 10 hour new ski out to the river and it ran sluggishly, wouldn't reach redline. Took it back to the dealer and they immediately suggested to remove and test the SC for slippage of the clutch discs. Big labor bill looming/possible rebuild of SC. That didn't sound right to him so he brought it home and we began to diagnose it before getting a second opinion. I found the oil sump was overfilled by a couple of inches, so I siphoned the excess out and checked the spark plugs, which were heavily fouled. Replaced the plugs and took it to the river again. It ran like new and was as fast as ever. Problem solved. Then we checked the other jet ski. It too was way overfilled. Turns out both had more than one quart extra oil put in at the dealership. The dealer must have an idiot doing oil changes or a very unethical plot for generating service work. The service manual is strongly worded to NOT OVERFILL. Supercharged engines do not like that.
Sorry to hear your problems, many dealers take for granted what they think they know and don't keep up with the changes and reading the manual is probably the last thing they would do. You are not the first and I'm sure not the last either.
Im here because I'm experiencing the same problem at a golf course I currently work at. The manufacturers recommendation says "2.1 qts" but then the dipstick says it's way overfilled. After reading an online forum it's obvious that manufacturers are recommending us to overfill the our engine, proprobably on purpose. The dipstick seems to be more accurate
Dealer money indeed by worker told to put an exta quart in. - Or workman never trained properly if at all. Figured daddy taught him years earlier. Not!
Every time my son gets his 2021 Honda CRV serviced at the Honda dealership they over fill over the max mark, he questioned this and the dealer said its measured quantities by the manufacturer and an electronic pump dispenses the correct amount of oil for the model ? I am guessing if that s the case they are not fully draining the old oil out and leaving at least 700mls of oil in the engine otherwise this would not happen. He has gone back to them twice now to to get the excess oil drained out and on one of those occasions they tried to charge him £110 for a complete oil change. Just unbelievable and that's a certified Honda dealership. He has decided he will not use the Dealership again and will take to his local independent to have it serviced.
As long as the crankshaft does not get into the oil there will be no problem.. If it does, not only will it aerate the oil a lot but it will cause a lot of friction heat that will cause the oil to thin out. That friction will also cause a lot of drag on the engine and cause it to work harder and a lot more fumes in the crankcase that the ventilation valve (PCV) will have to handle to prevent pressure buildup in the crankcase, more oil will be burned because the splashing oil will flood the cylinders under the piston and the wiper ring will not be able to remove all of the excess oil from the cylinder wall as the piston travels down causing excess oil to get above the piston. So if you refill your oil after an oil change and get to much in it, just remember that you removed the drain plug to drain the old oil out. It will work to remove excess new oil as well.
Thank you so much for this video. It’s been a defining moment to solving my over filled engine with oil. I was convinced after watching your video that I have over filled my engine contrary to thoughts it was the turbo which would cost a fortune to fix. I have watched your video over and over again until I resorted to draining the oil by using a hand operated pump from Machine mart. I was able to drain 2.5 litres of oil in the first day. There was a drastic reduction in both white and dark smoke from the exhaust upon several revs . I am beginning to get confident that my second attempt to drain the oil further would result in a complete smoke reduction after several revs. Grateful for a very good and well explained video. Keep up with the good work
Got my 1st 2012 Lexus IS 350 90k service done at stealer by the seller. Drove her home and checked oil level straightaway it was over filled by half an inch above the max, jacked the car up and bleeded the oil till it's just setting at max on the dipstick.
Pep Boys overfilled my oil. Its about 5 inches above the safe zone on my dip stick. Now my car struggles starting, the engine dies when driving / idling, and I can't go above 60mph.
5 inches is crazy my friend - some dipsticks aren't much longer than that! Please don't drive it, get the oil drained off as soon as you can or you could end up with engine damage.
Bought a 2014 335i bmw off auction with rear door damage, clean title, go to start it and white smoke, I mean I’ve never seen it smoke this much, drained the oil the other day, roughly 15 quarts of oil! The BMW takes 6.9 quarts with filter🥶, the bottom of the car is covered in oil! But when i started it for 10 sec it sounded fine which is crazy, am I being hopeful trying to clean all of it and refilling and keeping the motor? Thanks for the detailed video btw!
It depends how hard it was driven with the overfilled oil in it. If nothing is bent and all the seals are good you should be fine. Do run a flush through it next oil change to clear out any gunk that got in places it shouldn't. Keep me posted and I hope it works out well for you.
I think we need to understand each engine is different and the amount of oil that could cause a problem is different in each case. A quart of oil over fill isn't going to hurt anything. If you have so much in there it's hitting the rod journals then you're going to create foam and that's bad. But nobody makes an engine so sensitive to oil level that a quart of extra oil is going to hurt anything.
On my 2017 Subaru Outback it requires 5.1 quarts. Why Subaru came up with 5.1 blows my mind. Out of 7 oil changes I have had, dealer included, 6 quarts put in and of course they charged me for the 6 not .1. I've had to have the extra oil sucked out, usually by myself. I'll be changing my own oil from now on. Tired of getting hosed.
Same experience here...dealer always overfilled my 3.6...and I'd suck out the excess at home. Change my own these days....also using better oil and filter than the dealer uses.
Hi. Tx for video. I put too much oil on myself right now. The last Honda service was a year ago. The oil level today was 1 centimeters less than the maximum. The markings on the orange dip stick are not very clear. I put 1 liter of new oli. Now oil is 2 cm above the maximum. is that amount also too much? In comment i understend you talking a out mouch more amount of oil to be considered overfilled?Tx for advice.
Thanks for your video. I overfilled my oil and it’s create lots of smoke then i took to Garauge they drained the extra oil. But car still creating smoke .please recommend me what should i do?
how much oil is overfilled that could reach the rotating crank and cause foaming?? my car was overfilled by 1Liter by our local dealer and I was able to use the for 2500km before I already discovered it, but I didn't experience any symptoms. My engine is a Toyota 1kr-vet1.0cc Turbo.
Sorry for giving trouble. I approach for your expert second opinion for my observation in my car Caren with Turbo charged petrol engine 1). Recently Engine oil filled by Service Centre is 1.0 cm more than Full/Max. Level On drawing their attention, they say to us not to bother. Is their assurance correct ? Because Read somewhere that excess engine oil can damage system. In that case does it applicable to engine of Caren also. 2). Normally observed cabin as well engine sound of a petrol car is SILENT. But in my Caren it is noisy. Like to know Is it normal in Caren bcoz while drawing attention of Service people, they does not find it unusual.
I over filled my 2004 Ford Ranger by pouring in the whole 5 quart container I bought . And as far as I can tell after running engine to fill the oil filter. Looks to be 1/2 quart over max still ? (maybe a bit less) Is this worriesome ? Cuz I tried putting a 1/4inch tube down the dipstick to pump some out ... and it will not go past the last 3 inches or so that is the length of the dipstick .
I have a catch can, and it seems to spray a little bit of oil through the top breather baffling when I hit the gas. It's blowing cool air while running and j checked oil and it's a few centimeters above the max fill line. Could this be the reason it's spewing oil? It's really not a lot of oil but enough to cause concern
I have a crv and has been overfilled. It has been affecting the camshaft position sensor. I know because on hill start it starts cutting out on idle and has shown the engine fault in diagnostics.
Brother, i had drove my car aggressively around 1500 kms with overfilled engine oil without noticing it done by my car mechanic. But i drained the excess oil last week. Should I have to replace it new engine oil for safety?
The oil shouldn't degrade due to an overfill, any bubbles that formed will rise out in a fairly short time, did it look fairly clean and clear when you drained it? Minor overfills are generally ok, we're talking about major overfills here where the crank is splashing in the oil. You'll have noticed a problem already if there was one.
@@torquecars Drained oil was clean & good and yes the mech filled around 2 inches more than the FULL mark in the dipstick..i drained about 1.5 litres. Anyway, i have a different issue in my car bro. Mine is hyundai diesel hatchback. My car is giving very poor mileage/litre of fuel when l drive with AC on. When the AC is switched on engine noise & vibration is on higher side. It feels like engine cannot bear the load of AC. But when driven with AC off it is perfect. No Mileage issues at all. I have checked the AC compressor assembly, water pump, alternator pulleys, bearings etc.. all are perfectly fine. No malfunction light glows as well. All the car technicians here are perplexed. Iam not sure what is the issue. Kindly give me some pointers.
@@norbertnagy5514 from the day i serviced my car. I had replaced all filters, cleaner egr, intercooler. Replaced all consumables with new ones as well.
I changed the oil of my new car, and ten minutes after I went, thick white smoke came out of the exhaust of the car, then I stopped and changed it again and the smoke disappeared. My question is (will the engine or other parts inside it be destroyed with the passage of time) For your information, my car is new, model 2023 Camry
Damage from overfilled oil is generally apparent right away. If the cause of the problem is fixed with a correct grade or oil level then the problems caused will not in my experience get any worse over time. It sounds like you picked it up quite quickly. The Cats and lambda o2 sensor may need checking but it does sound like you resolved this one as soon as you noticed.
I had overfilled the engine after reading how much to use. However I misread the dipstick and it did smoke. I called the service at Finley and he said donot drive your car. Had it towed $209 and service $100. If I had left it at Finley for service I would not have made a expensive mistake!😳
I reckon I've accidentally topped mine up by 100 ml to much. I'm going to wipe the dipstick until it's sorted as I haven't got the space or tools here to get to the sump.
I've just got the oil changed, as well as the cambelt replaced and now the engine does seem to vibrate significantly more. There'e about an inch over the highest acceptable mark on the dipstick. Is that significant? Could the timing belt renewal be relevant too?
Just get some fuel pipe and a large syringe 50pence from chemist. Pass down dipstick hole and extract. Clamp pipe to syringe so u cant lose it! I worked at a college with motor vehicle as a course. The students couldn’t give a fig and these are who are working at fast fit outlets. All told to check auto Dayton for capacity, use proper jugs to measure. Oh yeah too busy on social media
ruclips.net/video/_F9ex36vx7M/видео.html This one covers the basics on the EA111 1.4 TSi & Twincharger, but I will do a separate one about the twincharge version, especially focusing on supercharger and mapping upgrades.
Mechanic did overfill with oil. 1 inch above full(kia soul) some say oil will foam up if it is too much...changed it last week...oil looks fine...should I still go back and drain it or is it ok? when foaming starts? like straight away after change or can happen any time?
If it reaches the crankshaft and became aerated maybe a couple more inches. If you want you can drain the excess, just dont let ot overfilled next time.
I accidentally put way too much engine in my car and then BiG buff of blue smoke and then a loss of power. Do I simply need to reduce the oil level, or is this a sign of more damage. Any advice most appreciated
Usually if you catch this early enough and haven't done hard driving you'd get away with it. However sometimes once leaks have started they will not clear up so it might be it burns a little oil. Give it time after the oil is drained to settle and see, in the meantime drive it very gently if you have to drive it at all and get that oil level down as soon as you can.
I think Toyota overfilled my oil because my engine rattled a few days after I got the oil change and then I had to change a spark plug and coil. The same thing happened yesterday because I got my oil changed from another company a few days prior and the engine light and trac light went on and now I don't have a lot of power and the engine is rattling. I looked at the dipstick after it got cool and the oil is above the maximum level. I have a 1.8 liter engine. Maybe I need a tune-up becuz I have 80,000 mi on the car but I think it's more than a coincidence that the problems happen within a few days after getting an oil change. I don't know for sure, what do you think?
Can the oil that spills into the crankshaft be removed? Or will draining excess oil from the sump help removing oil from crankshaft, or will oil from the crankshaft flow back into the sump if excess is removed? Cheers
Oil will generally always flow back into the sump, so draining off excess oil will help. The crankshaft sits just above the sump which is why you don't want it dipping into the oil and splashing around.
@@torquecars thanks again for the reply , I've been out to it this morning and drained some out through the dipstick tube , I've got a fluid removal kit, saved me jacking up and crawling under lol
I am currently experiencing an oil smell whilst driving my new car, I checked the oil and it seems quite high but I also checked the oil when the car was running and it spat oil quite heavy out the dip stick!!! Is this normal? I'm hearing this could be pcv or crank case pressure? I have since found that the car I bought was sold as a non runner at some point 😢
Removing the dip stick with the engine provides an outlet for the crankcase pressure to escape so splashing of oil in this instance is quite normal for most engines. Oil smells are often down to spills whilst filling and they fade over time, do check around the engine for leaks and make sure there is an appropriate amount of oil in the engine.
Is that car considered no good after it’s over filled? My kids dad overfilled mine I was driving and the shaking started, he said it was nothing then the smoke started and it was bad, what do I do now?
Drain the oil into a oil pan. Then put back what vehicle calls for. To much oil can cause the oil to foam and cause air bubbles and diminish lubricant properties
I fd up and read the oil level wrong and added 350ml more, car started and was vibrating abit. I got a pending misfire code on all cylinders, but no aladin lamp. I have a hyundai hybrid plug in, will drain the oil tommorow and see if the code goes away. I may have to change the plugs. Hopefully I have not bent any pistons😢
I have a Chevy Montecarlo ls I checked to dipstick and it was at a pretty good level but one day my girl was using my car to go to school and figured it’s been two months sense my car needed oil so she puts a whole gallon inside my car now it’s shaking when I start it up, when I’m breaking and if I’m in idle just lightly revving the engine
Which engine do you have? Most engines are tolerant of around half a quart overfills, but there are some exceptions out there. You would usually notice at least some of the symptoms of a problem if it were an issue.
I brought my car to a major chain.....which I never do. They overfilled it. Piston ring shot through the engine. 80MPH, small explosion and white smoke. Large puddle of oil left on the road as well. Oil level was still over the maximum fill line by the time it got to a shop.
Got a 04 gmc sierra bot running on a trade for a small job I did to do a v8 swap and once I charged battery and started it knocks like hell and then I checked oil was overfilled don’t know if that caused it or what but I drained 4-5 quarts and it was still a little over, motor has good oil pressure and runs good but knocks I may try to just run some thick oil in it and see what happens before I pull motor out 🤣
First time changing my own oil as a 16 year old. Got some royal purple oil hoping to boost my corolla's power (very funny looking back) and put wayy too much in it. It wouldn't even start. I got so worried that the royal purple ruined my old engine lol.
And I have a 2019 Buick envision I thought that I read right that it takes 6 quarts of oil but apparently it takes five I only put 5 and 1/2 quarts in will that cause any problems
Hey bud ...I'm almost certain that only half a quarter would effect it but I would still drain it out if it hasn't been used up ....I think l it should be okay
I know this is of topic, but I am trying to mod my 2006 CRV it has a K204A engine, can I mod this? And where do I find the parts, been looking for a while and getting frustrated
There are quite a few options around, but availability of parts will depend on where you live. I did a video on this engine ruclips.net/video/qLd30qApd0I/видео.html and there are some pages on our website with more information. If you have an idea of which mods you'd like to do and your budget I'll try and find someone in your area selling or shipping the parts you need.
I have this issue my car shut off twice on the highway, I did take the local road and drove 20mph because if I drive faster it would shut off again. It does smoke really bad when it starts. I took it to 2 shops and they tell me I need a new engine. Is there a way this can be fixed ? The engine isn’t even knocking either.
I overfilled with new oil after installing new oil filter can I reuse the same oil after draining the pan after a day of running??. It looks dirty after a day of running but I wana save a few bucks.
If you clean the drain plug and surrounding area, and make sure you drain into a clean container (preferably into the oil container that the oil you filled came with) then it will be good to put back in. However, make sure the container that you drain into doesn't have other liquids like water, that can contaminate the oil. I keep all the empty oil containers anyways, so I have something to store the oil into after draining.
Valvoline overfilled my engine by two quarts and my engine blew 3 days later. I have no way of “proving” it legally without wasting money on tearing it apart. Now I’m carless with no money for a new one. I had a very good car prior to this event and now I have nothing.
If the level is at max that is fine, you'll have notices problems already so it looks like you got away with it. Most cars tolerate a little over the max marker.
Why my 2017 Audi q7 (Driven 88000 kms) requires 1 ltr engine oil top up every 2000 km ? Lot of my friends has the same car and model. They never topped up engine oil. What problem my car has ?
The 3.0 TDi V6? High oil consumption is usually caused by oil passing the piston rings and burning off. The oil collector/scraper control ring often gets cloged up, running an oil flush and draining and refilling sometimes helps. It could also be a turbo issue, pcv / oil separator fault. Have you had a compression test done on the engine? Using the wrong grade of oil is also a potential problem here. If it was too thin for example this would cause it to seep and burn off.
This just happened to my daughters car. Her BF added oil without checking after she said she thinks it needs some. After seeing smoke and feeling down on power she called. I had her take it to the shop where $1200 later she was back on the road. They had to replace a valve and a spark plug socket tube. On another note, ive never heard that you are supposed to check the oil cold. Ive always thought that was supposed to be checked hot, but now im thinking i confused doing that before a oil change, with checking the oil.
it depends on the car. look at the manual. some recommend cold, some recommend 5 minutes after engine shutoff, some recommend to check while running. the manufactures modify the lines on the dipsticks depending on their "plan" for the user thats in the manual. cold will always be higher.
We had a general service at our mechanic shop do an oil change on a Porsche 718 I think it's been awhile they drain the transmission fluid by accident thinking it was the drain plug for the oil the Porsche needed I think 6 quarts of oil he added six more quarts of oil took it for a test drive no issues Casper came back it was check engine light a bunch of evap codes I think and a couple transmission codes we let it sit in the shop the night before barrels of white smoke came out I told the technician to put the Porsche in the air and let the transmission and oil fully drained out for 2 days over the weekend the technician the following Monday which is 2 Days later did a transmission service new spark plugs put oil in the car correctly and cylinder one had a lot of oil on it not dripping but more noticeable than the other other cylinders cylinder one was the one that had a little bit more oil noticeable so we changed the spark plugs so I had the technician pulled the spark plugs out and he knows cylinder one was still wet so we got another spark plug and the check engine light is for cylinder one we well the technician I apologize so I unfortunately left the job before the Porsche was fixed because I was just moving on brand new wife kids caught a life so I was curious you know I never followed up what could be the issue I was wondering what could cause just cylinder one just always have the check engine light on what could cause that
Are you getting any symptoms? That is not in my humble opinion a major overfill, but I would drain off a little oil especially if you are getting problems like smoke or loss of power.
@@torquecars I have not noticed any smoke or loss of power from the two days I've driven. The dipstick is showing about two inches over the maximum though. I went ahead and bought an oil extractor pump device that will arrive tomorrow. I was going to remove the excess oil via drain plug but I'm too lazy to do all that work again so hopefully the pump device works. Wish me luck! And thanks for the reply!
I filled up my truck 5 litres over what it needed smh & as I was driving it started to just over rev itself so on my dashboard it said for me to pull over n put it in park..turned it off then I couldn’t turn it back on… it was locked the engine wouldn’t turn on.. do I need to replace or is there another way to maybe drain n clean it out for my truck to work… cheers feel so stupid smh
Note: I had a mobile mechanic come n drain the oil out n refill n it still wouldn’t start.. he automatically told me to buy a new engine but just wanted to see if there was still a chance of saving a whole heap of money.. thanks again
If anyone could chime in on this: my brother accidentally drained his gearbox oil instead of the engine oil, put 4 litres of new oil in (so the engine had 2x the engine oil level). He ran the engine for maybe 15 minutes, less than a mile driven. Gearbox is most likely fine after being refilled, but there is still an enormous amount of white smoke coming out even after draining half the engine oil (of course all needs to be drained and replaced with new oil but we're just trying to see if it isn't damaged and going to the scrap). It puts out a lot of thick white smoke when revved up (I guess about when the turbo starts spinning fast). Would that indicate there's oil in the turbo? Failed oil seal? Should we run the car for some time and see if it stops? Any advice welcome. Thanks (It's a late 90s Peugeot, 2.0 turbo petrol) Edit: late update but car's running very well after proper oil change and 1-2 weeks of driving (generally short urban trips, but very frequent) there's no oil smoke out the exhaust.
late update but car's running very well after proper oil change and 1-2 weeks of driving (generally short urban trips, but very frequent) there's no oil smoke out the exhaust. No impact on the engine performance, though a engine MIL did pop up a couple time over the month after.
I think that the manual for my vehicle says to have the engine run for at least 10 minutes after replacing the oil before checking the level. It says nothing about checking it when cold. Maybe you only need to check it cold for some vehicles? Never heard of anyone doing that
Always follow the manual, I think I've misrepresented the "allow to cool a little and oil settle" as cold which as you say doesn't apply to all cars and some apparently need checking when the engine is running, having checked this - the markings on the dipstick are set in accordance with the measured temperature, hot oil expands and tends to read higher than cold. The key is if you've just run the engine to warm it up, you need to allow time for the oil to run down into the sump to get a true level, this can take a while even when the oil is hot.
I checked mine a few days ago, below min line. Topped up about 500ml at a visit to auto parts store, drove home. Tried driving about 45 mins later and got horrible misfiring and it hasn't started noey for 3 days. There was a leak but i can't tell from where and i did drain about 500 again and re added fresh oil to it being just above min line now, I've put in new spark plugs incase they got mucked up but no luck. Battery deffo needs charged up to continue tests but i have no jump leads or charger. Hopefully a mechanic will look at it tomorrow
And for the record this is on a "bulletproof" old Toyota 1.4l with no recorded engine problems before. Never failed an MOT test. Someone said it might just be coincidence that I added oil when I did and it could've experienced failure anyway.
Some dealers overfill oil in my experience...I feel maybe they think its gonna be a year before it comes in again, but i give mine an extra change myself. They overfilled mine on last service but I have pump and took some out. .I'll be telling em next time not to and will check it before I leave..
Well heres a new one....My car takes 4.9 liters with Oil filter...I had topped up my car a couple days ago, as I do have a small leave from a seal. (Pending replacement) But the other day I was coming back from a weekend day at the track watching racing. And I was pushing my little 1.4L 16v Clio 3 a little over 150km/hr. And this huge burst of white/blue smoke came bellowing out the exhaust. Too my knowledge I had put a little too much oil in my car, reason for this is my Dip stick was broken when it was getting its cambelt done.
nah, most cars end up that way. id never go a full quart over, but .5 is fine. i personally do it to my car all the time. to the guys point, check it after you stop, if it's foamy at all, drain some out. if it's not dont worry about it
Yes drain the oil (a filter change is not required) and always fit a new sump washer. Hopefully it has just led to rough running and little blue/white smoke. When drained you'll be in a position to see if anything permanent has happened. Most people will drain the oil, measure it and return the correct amount (minus a quart as it is easier to add than remove) to the engine, check the dipstick and top up if needed. In most cases as long as you get to it quickly and it hasn't run too much or too fast with substantial overfills nothing too serious happens. The most common worst case is leaking oil seals, and when these are replaced it will be like new. Even these can improve over time in some cases when the oil pressure has returned to normal levels.
My Toyota lease car dealer did engine oil service and they over filled with 1 quarter extra so they don’t care is good for them so cars don’t last a lot
That is a really good idea for a video, it will in most boxes still cause cavitation and lubrication issues. There are so many transmissions out there I'll have to do my research carefully to cover as many bases as possible. How do you feel about filled for life transmissions that do not require changes or top ups?
So ever since I put this cleanser into a full tank of gas. My eco boost won't stay on during a pro long trip. I also believe my oil levels and topping are not a good idea. I put Euro L Full Synthetic into it just now. It started putting. I've been topping off and measure for the last couple hundred miles. I believed the oil was burning off. After doing research, you mostly can use this European oil in American cars. I'd like to do these changes on my own but I need a heavy duty jack lift and not something small for tire changes.
you dont need a heavy duty lift, just a decent floor jack and jack stands. not sure id put euro in an American car, they tend to be different weights and that's what matters. if it's the weight your car should take and the bottle happens to say euro, dont worry about it. now if its burning enough to where you need to add to it, that's an issue. first you need to figure out where it's burning and why because that could mean a new engine or major engine work is going to be needed soon. plus eventually the oil residue in the exhaust is going to clog the catalytic converter and those are EXPENSIVE so id avoid that if you can.
I know a girl who had a Ford V6 who overfilled her engine and fouled the spark plugs next to tthe firewall and the mechanic had to pull the manifold off to get at the plugs costing $1,000
It may be just lifters ticking with the new clean oil. High mileage they loosen up with wear a bit. Next oil use a thick oil by one step. If your using 5/20 use 10/30
My dip stick was excess little bit ,mechanic filled 3 ltr ,but my car manual said 2.7 ltr, it's any probelm Then my dip stick hole open then car started engine oil sparyed little bit
It does depend on the engine but most will tolerate a little overfill, they set the max level below the cranks splash zone. It is normal to spray a little oil with the dipstick open, there are quite a few pressure variations going on in the engine and with this unplugged it will generally find a way out there.
That much extra oil will have no significance at all. Don’t worry about it. It’s the same as if it’s a bit under. It won’t be any problem. It’s called a forgiveness factor.
You'll find even VW and Audi tend to overfill these engines a bit at service time, the real danger in these engines is dropping too low, it really does kill the turbo.
It is unlikely, but if the excess oil entered the cylinder, you can end up with Hydrolock where the piston tries to compress the oil but cannot so you bend or break a rod/crank/piston and cause major problems inside the engine. This is typically the sort of thing that happens when you drive through water and suck this into the intake, you would have to have a lot of oil in your engine to reach the cylinders.

A computer says no moment that we encounter too often these days
Keep up with the good work
Very well constructed video.
Excellent video. Cleae, well presented and exactly what I needed. No waffle ! Thanks
Got my 1st 2012 Lexus IS 350 90k service done at stealer by the seller. Drove her home and checked oil level straightaway it was over filled by half an inch above the max, jacked the car up and bleeded the oil till it's just setting at max on the dipstick.
Explanations straight-forward, logical and useful! Thank you.
@TorqueCars is the engine fixable once it's damaged or does the whole engine have to be replaced?
Don’t let some high school kid service your car. Don’t go PepBoys. Easy fix
I got my car back from the shop after an oil change and the oil is about a half inch above the full dot on the dipstick

It’s best to change your own oil as most places including reputable shops has at least one incompetent worker
Thanks for the video. MY car was overfilled Should I take it to get the oil changed and filter

Sorry for giving trouble.
I approach for your expert second opinion for my observation in my car Caren with Turbo charged petrol engine
1). Recently Engine oil filled by Service Centre is 1.0 cm more than Full/Max. Level
On drawing their attention, they say to us not to bother.
Thank you. I wish I were smart enough to think about how to fill the engine oil pan.
If you just undo the oil filter sometimes that'll be fine because if you're only like a quarter quart to full or half it will help
My dip stick shows oil to top dot. Not much more when hot. Better than below bottom dot! No worries mate!
I over filled my 2004 Ford Ranger by pouring in the whole 5 quart container I bought .
And as far as I can tell after running engine to fill the oil filter. Looks to be 1/2 quart over max still ? (maybe a bit less)
Is this worriesome ?
Cuz I tried putting a 1/4inch tube down the dipstick to pump some out ... and it will not go past the last 3 inches or so that is the length of the dipstick .
I have a catch can, and it seems to spray a little bit of oil through the top breather baffling when I hit the gas. It's blowing cool air while running and j checked oil and it's a few centimeters above the max fill line. Could this be the reason it's spewing oil? It's really not a lot of oil but enough to cause concern
The intro was slightly too long. But once the information came it was precise and to the point.
All-inclusive explanation and video.

I have a crv and has been overfilled. It has been affecting the camshaft position sensor. I know because on hill start it starts cutting out on idle and has shown the engine fault in diagnostics.

I have a renualt clio and noticed a oil leak but it's comes out from the exhaust manifold what would cause this? I thought maybe there is too much oil
Anyway, i have a different issue in my car bro. hi I'm having oil filter leak after Changing My Engine oil??what's the issue there?
@@torquecars Yes, I stopped quickly and changed the oil, thank you I was worried
How did you overfill it to begin with? The owners manual tells you the exact amount you need.
So, putting 5QT istead of 4.6 as it says to my 2016 Toyota Camry wont do nothing wrong? It's been running smooth so far
Yeah thats not much more, so it should be fine, but if there are like multiple quarts over you should drain it
@@roiselmartinez6368 what does the dipstick read?
I've just got the oil changed, as well as the cambelt replaced and now the engine does seem to vibrate significantly more. There'e about an inch over the highest acceptable mark on the dipstick. Is that significant? Could the timing belt renewal be relevant too?
I would take it back and ask their opinion. My sad experience was too much oil in the engine. But that’s my experience.
It could be the oil but it seems like your Cambelt change they didn't line up the camshaft and crank properly, probably off by a tooth
Just get some fuel pipe and a large syringe 50pence from chemist. Pass down dipstick hole and extract. Clamp pipe to syringe so u cant lose it! I worked at a college with motor vehicle as a course. If it reaches the crankshaft and became aerated maybe a couple more inches. If you want you can drain the excess, just dont let ot overfilled next time.
I accidentally put way too much engine in my car and then
BiG buff of blue smoke and then a loss of power.
@@torquecars thank you very much
I think Toyota overfilled my oil because my engine rattled a few days after I got the oil change and then I had to change a spark plug and coil.
@torquecars so just drain and it should be OK then , thanks for that mate , it's appreciated 👍
Forgot to ask, what if any of the oil has foamed up, will it settle again or need removing somehow ?
It should settle, after it has run through the filter and warmed up and cooled down the bubbles will normally dissipate.
Thanks a million for the information.

What if your car still doesn't start or fire over after to much oil
I have a Chevy Montecarlo ls I checked to dipstick and it was at a pretty good level but one day my girl was using my car to go to school and figured it’s been two months sense my car needed oil so she puts a whole gallon inside my car now it’s shaking when I start it up, when I’m breaking and if I’m in idle just lightly revving the engine
Check on dipstick, drain the excess
Is it possible that too much oil can cause knocking ?
My Mazda takes 4.4quarts but I usually just had the whole 5quart jug, should I stop doing so? 🤔
Should I be worried about the place where the oil leaks after I drained the excess oil?
Always put a drain pan under the sump to catch the oil and dispose of it correctly or save it for future top ups if it is clean and in good condition.

Did you ever figure it out?
I overfilled with new oil after installing new oil filter can I reuse the same oil after draining the pan after a day of running??. It looks dirty after a day of running but I wana save a few bucks.
If you clean the drain plug and surrounding area, and make sure you drain into a clean container (preferably into the oil container that the oil you filled came with) then it will be good to put back in.
However, make sure the container that you drain into doesn't have other liquids like water, that can contaminate the oil.
I keep all the empty oil containers anyways, so I have something to store the oil into after draining.

Hello i have one question if i put to much oil on my bmw f34 320i and now the level is at max is ok?
And of course car manufacturers have never ever warned us about this.
Transmission- check hot
Oil check cold-

Thanks
(It's a late 90s Peugeot, 2.0 turbo petrol)
Edit: late update but car's running very well after proper oil change and 1-2 weeks of driving (generally short urban trips, but very frequent) there's no oil smoke out the exhaust.

Lol this is me when I forgot the new engine doesn't have an oilcooler and I overfilled crazy amounts

How do You fix this issue ?
Always ran a quart over. On my muscle cars. They will pump oil to the top running hard and pan runs low.
My Toyota lease car dealer did engine oil service and they over filled with 1 quarter extra so they don’t care is good for them so cars don’t last a lot
what about overfilling axle and trans oil?
That is a really good idea for a video, it will in most boxes still cause cavitation and lubrication issues. There are so many transmissions out there I'll have to do my research carefully to cover as many bases as possible.
How do you feel about filled for life transmissions that do not require changes or top ups?
The video on transmission fluid is live, thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you
So ever since I put this cleanser into a full tank of gas.
320d e90 2005 got to much oil, engine is making a ticking sound
It may be just lifters ticking with the new clean oil. High mileage they loosen up with wear a bit. Next oil use a thick oil by one step. If your using 5/20 use 10/30
@arthursmith643 it was the flywheel, the big one. Fixed it and now it's gone. 500 euro
My dip stick was excess little bit ,mechanic filled 3 ltr ,but my car manual said 2.7 ltr, it's any probelm
Then my dip stick hole open then car started engine oil sparyed little bit
It does depend on the engine but most will tolerate a little overfill, they set the max level below the cranks splash zone. It is normal to spray a little oil with the dipstick open, there are quite a few pressure variations going on in the engine and with this unplugged it will generally find a way out there.
That much extra oil will have no significance at all. Don’t worry about it. It’s the same as if it’s a bit under. It won’t be any problem. It’s called a forgiveness factor.
Would too much oil make my engine sound like it banging and knocking
That's probably a bent or busted rod
My 1.2tsi is slightly over filled by 250ml shouldnt be too pad
You'll find even VW and Audi tend to overfill these engines a bit at service time, the real danger in these engines is dropping too low, it really does kill the turbo.
Dose it lock the engine up?
It is unlikely, but if the excess oil entered the cylinder, you can end up with Hydrolock where the piston tries to compress the oil but cannot so you bend or break a rod/crank/piston and cause major problems inside the engine. This is typically the sort of thing that happens when you drive through water and suck this into the intake, you would have to have a lot of oil in your engine to reach the cylinders.
