I grew up there in the 70's and 80's. Moved there when I was 7, went to Hollywood beach school and Oxnard High. Best days of my life! Surfing every morning, bonfires at night! What a blast we had!
My dad lived there in the late 90s. I would go there during the Summer (my parents were divorced). He would say to make sure I knew the address and gave me the name of one of his friends that was a good surfer there. I never got a hard time from anyone, but maybe I was lucky. The waves are amazing. I was into body boarding back then. Best waves that I've been in. Only place I have gotten barreled and made it out without it closing out. Still remember seeing the sun shine through the top of the wave.
Silver Strand is the neighborhood. "Hollywood by the Sea" is the beach and break to the South of the harbour entrance. The Strand is North of the harbour entrance. Both have fantastic All the time surf, any kind of South or West Gound swell or wind swell. "Hollywood by the Sea" is un real good surf break. Both Jetties work. And the peaks in the middle are insane good. Their is a massive submarine canyon leading upto the Harbour Silver Strand beach area. A guy from my hometown of Santa Ynez in the 1970's lost his life coming into the harbour on his sail boat there. Ultra good waterman too. Caught in a massive set that drowned him and his boat in a flash. Ultra bummer. The swells around this harbour are teacherous, massive and produce a nasty shore break on really steep sand beaches. I survived Hollywood by the Sea in those mid Seventies days both in the water and on the beach and parking lot. To this day I cant believe they dont host a Professional Surfing event their. The surf is the best I ever experienced in my surfing carreer from 1975- 1991. Ultra perfect peaks, barrels, Lefts and Rights. From Jetty to Jetty and inbetween. Probably the best kept "Secret" in all of California. And I have surfed from Fort Point, SF to San Diego perfection including pristine Hollister Ranch all the killer breaks. For years. HOLLYWOOD BY THE SEA. # 1 in all of California.
I spent 15 years there have a great time especially the Red room surfing excellent waves in all the locals I'm in Ventura but I truly miss all the local guys Leo
In the early to mid 80s it was quite localized and you could be in serious danger of a butt kick if you were not from the area . I lived just down the road from silver strand and did not hang with any locals but my board came from the local surf shop so I never got any grief . There was a time there was affordable bungalows to rent . I lived a block from the beach in the late 80s on oxnard shores in a 2 bedroom condo for $ 600 a month . This is when oxnard was affordable but gentrification came along with high price residential properties going up which brought in the more wealthy which raised prices across the board . There's only so much habitable beach property . Now its just a family beach with allot of vacation beach rentals . Localism has died with elevated costs for housing
Grew up here here on Victoria ave after I moved here from North Hollywood in Mid 90s. Went to Christa McAuliffe elementary. Used to always be at the strand. Even on cloudy over casts days. glad to see PEPE'S Mexican spot is still there 15 years later. The look hasn't changed at all!!!
@@brianbirc It was a shitty stereo. We're talking the 8 track days. I have no idea what they did with it. I had been surfing there since 1966 periodically off and on without much problem. Surfed there once in '89 (I'm from SB) and yes I got chased out of there. Before I knew it I was surrounded in the water by about 5 guys. I simply paddled straight in and at the time I was actually grateful it didn't escalate. Needless to say I never went back.
This beach is open to the public is not a residential only beach. Some people will stare at you like they think they owned this beach. You may feel negative energy since people are not friendly at all.
I lived by the Strand...I remember OSL and SSL...I also remember those KRS Boys in West Oxnard. They lived in that Hemlock/Victoria area and were always causing ruckus.
Lived in the houses on the Strand in the 70s. Burbank, Cahuenga, and Island View. Cher lived two blocks over on Malibu Ave, and lots of older movie stars used to live there. A friend lived in Clark Gable's old house on Ocean Dr. None of the houses I lived in are there anymore, all have been rebuilt and made much larger. Surfers from LA, "southers" usually got their tires slashed, or asses kicked.
That place had some hardcore localism in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Now it’s made up of millionaire trust fund babies who move there from somewhere else and pretend to be gangster.
Used to surf the beach just south of the jetty Obviously the jetty is locals only But down the beach you'll get waves if you surf good and keep a humble positive attitude.
Grew up on Hemlock/Victoria in the Nard...we used to mob to the Strand to hang out and drink all the time...SSL, OSL, and even those KRS Boys in West Oxnard were all cool.
Localism is never a good attitude anywhere. It's left up to a thug culture to regulate a public stretch of beach where even if you lived longer or closer to the beach they still will mess with you. I hope its changed for the better.

Must have been well over 20 years ago now. After a day of surfing The Con on a double overhead NW, I drove down to Silver Strand to check it out. Good lord, it must have been a solid triple overhead with Santa Anas blowing offshore. I grew up in PV, so would have been just a bit of a hypocrite to expect to paddle out at Silver Strand and not get grief or worse, so decided just to watch in jealousy. Amazing wave though. Sad from reading the comments how the obnoxious housing prices have destroyed that tight knit community.
