The autonomy 1 was made for the coast guard, the autonomy 2 is its less tactical brother. The 2 is basically an automatic version of the Caribbean. Got my autonomy 2 a couple years ago and it’s one of my favorite knives.
Like everyone has said before, this knife was developed for the Coast Guard. The oversized firing button is not only for use with gloves but when your hands get cold, you lose dexterity/mobility.
@@jalexandr55 I bought this blade for use at my marine electric job. Alot of times I am wearing gloves and out in the elements. This build lends itself beautifully for easy deployment and usability. As everyone is saying, the button lock is easy to find and use regardless of the situation, and I've never gotten it caught on my pants or anything like that. Never had an accidental deployment and if that is a concern, there's a lock for a reason. Obviously it's not for everyone. Just adding my two cents.
I read on one of the retailers that this knife was developed for Coastguard rescue swimmers that might have something to do with the humongous button just to make it that much easier to fire
Absolutely one of my all time favorite knives. It’s an auto actually built for solid use. Break the main spring, Spyderco sells a service kit with two mainsprings for 20$. All for a lot less then a 1/3 scale Microtech.
Thank you for that comment I had no idea this makes me look at Spyderco knives in whole different light. This actually makes thier overall cost miles above the competition!
@@MrAutochamber don’t get me wrong, I still love Microtechs, but for a serious hard use auto, the “Autonomy 2 “ is on another level. It looks weird to be generous, but carry it and you get the “weirdness”. Plus the fact that Spyderco sells a cheep service kit for it as aposed to the standard “loosen a single screw, void the warranty” makes it miles ahead of almost any other auto maker. Like “Red Green” says, “if the girls don’t find you handsome, at least they will find you handy”.
May be wrong but I think Eric said somewhere that the button is oversize and large to accommodate gloves since theres a safety already, as well as divers since the steel is built for salt water applications.
The button “bowl”/ “hole” is supposed to be like the Spyderco signature hole that is used to open their manual knives if that makes any sense. And it’s an auto compression lock like you said “a reverse liner lock”.
I’ve had one for quite a while and carry it occasionally and without using the safety it’s never fired in my pocket. Cool knife and it is a stout opener.
Spyderco oddity: the firing button is the "Reverso" Spidey Hole .. take any modern Spyderco folder (PM2, Para 3, etc.) and place the Spidey Hole on those knives over the firing button of the Autonomy 2 ... perfect fit. It's like Spyderco took all of those Spidey Hole scrap punches off the factory floor and recycled them into Autonomy 2 buttons. I love Spyderco's for their wackiness.
I work on swimming pools and have been through so many knives due to rust. H1 steel rules for wet jobs. Ive had the orange serrated older autonomy for 4 years and use it everyday. The oversized button was made for underwater military forces/workers. They can easily hit the button with gloves on.
If it was made for the coast guard it probably has a big button so they could use it with gloves on, especially if rescue swimmers used it. It makes sense.
I believe the large button is to make it easier to fire using gloves since it was made for the Coast Guard. I think the button is bowled or hollowed to have the inner edged grip onto your finger better so it doesn't slip out of your hand. I know from using thick heavy gloves that knives with small buttons or certain opeing/close mechanisms is hard to do, especially one handed.
I own the same knife in all black the button is big because the knife was made for the U.S COAST GUARD and its a big button so it can be operated easily when there wearing big gloves in the cold. Plus I love the over sized button it looks awesome and it works so nice even wearing thick heavy gloves.
I could see some dope mod being done to that fire button. People filing it down and put some textured inlay in it, so it's not just a empty dish. Would love to see Spyderco do it in a different steel in the future. But sadly I wouldn't get to experience it anyway since Autos & assisted is illegal over here now. But at least lots of other people get to enjoy them.
Legality should not be an issue. It doesn't stop me from carrying an auto. (I guess it depends on your perspective.) I've had several autos confiscated over the years, but I've never been locked up over it. Lose your blade, just buy another. 🤘🤪
@@christopherdaniel5919 Sure. I can enjoy the ones I already own. But I live in Norway. So ordering Autos counts as importing illegal weapons which come with a hefty fine $5 - $8000 and possible prison sentence. So not a risk I'm personally wiling to take
I bought a Spyderco automatic once. Once. It was the embassy. Blade grind was all over the place. I took it out of the box, looked at it.. posted it for resale 15 minutes later.

That used to be true but nowadays factory milling and bearings have improved folding knives to a point where automatic just means more parts that can break, more legislation issues, harder to clean and more weight.
Yeah, that's how the button is, you just have to make sure you lock it for your pocket. There's a few different ones and they start at around the $220 mark.
Is the odd button possibly covered by the use case model described by Benchmade? Designed to perform under the demanding conditions of U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmers, the Autonomy 2 puts functionality and reliability at the forefront. Textured G-10 scales, a large raised firing button, and a safety lock are all key features that make this knife easy to handle and operate.
