Two of my processing gurus. Between Blake and Sean I have been able to produce image beyond my wildest dreams. Both of these guys are masters of post processing and are great teachers. Looking forward to spending several days in Southern Oregon with Sean in February shooting the coast and stealing all I can from Sean. Glad you two connected. Out of Oregon was truly amazing. So many great teachers and you two were at the top of my list.

The Blake's comment about how the use of a opposite color in the color wheel to tone down the orange color, for exemple, was as precious as a bar of gold. Great video, Sean!

Thanks, gotta love Color Theory. I used to be a painter for a long long time ago. There are a lot of painting techniques that bleed into the color theory of Photography.

Blake Rudis is the best Photoshop educator currently in the business!! As you can tell by this tutorial he explains more than just how-to, he explains why you want to and why it works. Very unique and very useful - in the vein of teach of man to fish.

Love this! I use Blake's ƒ64 panels for the color grading side of editing but now have incorporated the latest Lumenzia panels to isolate image luminosity zones for treatment after ACR. IMO, these two tools allow me to master the power of Photoshop without putting in 20 years of hard won empirical knowledge! Thanks, guys.

Came here after watching the exposure blending tutorial yesterday. These are two great tutorials and I love how simple the applications are. I’ve never messed with any color theory type stuff like this before so it’s definitely something that will be nice to add to the toolbox.
I have a photo that is “too blue” also, theses still some slight orange from the sunset but twilight is mostly taking over so I’m going to try something similar to what you did to yours.

Hi Sean: This was a great video. While I have heard about Colour (sorry I am a Cdn and we spell it with a 'u')Theory, it had been very confusing to me but Blake's explanation and the application of Colour Theory makes more sense to me. Nice to see the two of you teaching each other. what I have learned is that there are "more roads that in the end lead to Rome" (I hope you know what I mean). I find it a pity, that I haven't learned about colour theory, when I was a young guy. Understanding it at my age is one thing, but applying is another. Thank you both for inspiring me!
Absolutely, many paths! Color Theory is something you shouldn't beat yourself up about. It is a topic you will hear about until you want to throw up in Painting, but something rarely discussed in Photography.

Sean and Blake, Great collaboration! I hope to see more video tutorials like this in the future. Exposure blending is a key area of interest for me, so I really appreciated Sean's straightforward and easy to follow approach. I will definitely be watching the part about using smart objects when exposure blending. I can also see a way of using Blake's blend-if tone adjustments for creating exposure blending masks. Based on Blake's training, I frequently incorporate gradients in my images after doing some experimentation. I definitely learned ways to use the the diamond and reflected gradients that I did not fully appreciate previously. I'm looking forward to using the power of exposure blending over HDR on my images. Keep up the great work! Joe

There are so, so many levels of awesomeness in image editing, I'm dwarfed by it.
I could watch hours of tutorial by both you and Blake. However, the trick is to actually experiment with the tools.

I agree that one of the most important things to do is EXPERIMENT and just have fun. The more you play in PS the more your mind sees the nuances and possibilities. And sometimes in that process happy accidents occur and you discover something you weren't even trying to. Longer tutorial collab...hmm. If we were to do that it might take us decades. What you didn't see is that we spent three times longer off-camera talking about all kinds of other stuff. Haha!

Interesting. Color grading in LR allows you to make the yellow in your image yellower or less yellow, etc. You'll notice that a color that is not present in the image renders a slider ineffective. The PS layer is like an old fashioned color filter that we used e.g. in black and white as it influences basically anything ion your picture one way or another. Yellow filters would make the blue of the sky darker and the clouds brighter, but they also made green a bit lighter.

Tell me about it. Fortunately, as Blake points out, color grading is often best applied toward the end of the workflow, so completely starting over isn't necessarily required. I'm interested to apply grading on some more of my "finished" images.

It is great Sean, I think it is better Tony Kuyper add gradient and gradient map tools to the adjustment palet in Rapid Mask. For example, I usually use solid color after selecting the proper TK mask to my images, adding also Gradient and Gradient Map to the panel can be very useful. So it may give a great opportunity to process a specific part of the image as we like. Thanks again, regards from Turkey.

I could feel the photo purists out there start twitching as I watched the video 😄 I'm not one.. anything to help your art generate emotion feels fine to me. Like you, I've played with color but these techniques used w subtlety look very powerful.. now, practice, experiment, practice 🤗

Hi Sean, I love this video that you made but I need HELP! When I click on the gradient, all I get are folders and don't get the color palette that you and Blake had, I have to expand each folder to see the colors inside the folder. If I could add a screenshot I would show you what I mean. How do I get it to look like what you and Blake have. Thanks.
David, I'm brand new at this too, so I'll give my best answer and Blake can correct me or add-in. I'm still doing the same thing you are...expanding the default gradient folders that come with PS. For my examples, I selected gradients that gave me a starting point and then I modified/customized the gradient to do what I wanted. In the gradient editor, you can save customized gradients (the New button) or import gradients. What you see in Blake's gradient editor is a huge library of custom gradients that I assume he has created and saved over years of doing it. If you go over to his website f64academy.com/ and dig around I bet you will find some information on creating/editing gradients. And I also bet that he includes custom gradients that you can import with many of his courses.

David Macias There is another reason you’re seeing a difference in available gradients. When Adobe added the new Gradients panel (as well as new Patterns and Shapes panels) in Photoshop 2020, they also did two other things: They redesigned/updated all of the default presets for gradients/patterns/shapes/swatches, and they organized them into folders. The UI shown in the video makes me think it’s still Photoshop CC 2019 or earlier, which shows the default gradient list and the organization before the big change. So if you’re using Photoshop 2020, the gradient list looks different from previous versions even if nothing was customized.
