These little guys will fit perfectly into a time-lost ruin on Xen’drik! Perhaps the size of the giant’s tomes allows for medium sized paper dragons with a bit more of a bite?
Imagine a library where these things run amok, but instead of eating paper, they are born from them, and contain copies of the books which they came from, building a nest from it. Would be one hell of a way to protect your library.
This intire thread is amazing! Dragons have thick skin, which gets thicker as they age - stronger and heavier serving as a kind of natural battle armor. 👍😂🤣
Paper Dragon familiar.....Sleeps in my false spell book. feed it my excess spells at the end of the day by inscribing spells into its home . totally doing this
That is an Excellent idea... the question is, what effect does long term ingestion of funky magic have on the mental and physical state of the Paper Dragons?
They would love the printing press should it ever develop. Unlikely given the communication spells that already exist. It is pretty much unlimited food at that point, well sorta.
Wow.... never heard of those before. Would add age category. Older paper dragon could store more than one spell (let's say... up to 3), but would need to eat more as well. I would also add a polymorph into a magical map. Slip into an adventurer party as a map, use his intelligence and lore knowledge to guide the players, while snacking on their magical scrolls without their notice.
Flock/infestation of them with one amongst them having consumed a wish spell scroll the players could gain by slaying it without damaging its body and unfolding it. Neat little idea for a flying “ring of wish” treasure methinks
I would totally give it the ability to communicate by forming words on its body, probably its outstretched wings, but with the caveat that it can only write in either draconic or the languages contained in its last week's meals.
What a cool creature. Kind of the companion to the rust monster in a way. One preys upon the iron bedecked fighter (and the party's precious gold), and the other the delectable spellbook of the wizard. Could a warlock who has taken the pact of the tome befriend a paper dragon by allowing it to dine on his/her book of shadows? It can be replaced in an hour's time, and so would represent an infinite source of nutrition for the whimsical and voracious being.
Those who play Wizards: Consider flavoring an awakened spellbook as a paper dragon if you use Order of Scribes. It isn't the spellbook that is important, it isn't the thing truly recording your spells. It is the home it lives in and how you feed it. You still record new spells in the book, but the dragon eats those and communicates with you what you need to prepare them. Holding this little origami from the book works just as well as your focus as pointing the tome it dwells in at someone. Replacing the book is just setting up a new home for them in a new book. Manifest mind could easily be flavored from there as it traveling out from your book and maintaining a connection to them.
My DM and you would get a long. He is an old school D&D fan who loved this monster, his WoW character name was even Paperdragon for awhile. He was very upset that there were no good homebrew versions of it for 5e. He is going to love this.
You forgot their most ominous attack, Paper Cut! Does no damage but must save vs. wisdom to avoid spending an inordinate examining ones fingers for a cut that can be felt but not seen. ;-)
Wasn’t that issue the April Fool’s issue for that year? One year in the April Fool’s issue they had a list of 1/2 level spells anyone could cast: • Leomund’s really tiny hut. Materials need: a staff and a large cloak. • purify food 1/2. Materials: a bottle ketchup; everyone know you can eat anything if you put enough ketchup on it. • cure wounds 1/2. Bandages and after the 24 cast time (of subject remains still) they will recover 3 hp. • dash 1/2. Materials: middle finger and good set on f running shoes. Et cetera. Funny stuff.
Not sure where to make request for monsters to be done, but if you have a chance, I'd love to see an episode done on the tentamort. I once used a pair of these things to guard the entrance to a jungle temple and the tentamort's poison f up the party so bad that the party's rouge had to use his last wish on a ring of wishes to redo the encounter minus the part where they were totally taken by surprised by the tentamorts. God that was a fun encounter. And as the one forced to DM, I especially loved the fact that I got rid of that wish BEFORE that phase of our campaign had really gotten off the ground, and all it cost me was a do over. The magic user was dying, the fighter was dying, the cleric was helpless and the rouge lamented, God I wish I would have spotted those things before we had walked into them and BLAM, I groundhog dayed them with the addition of a glimpse of movement at the top of one of the pillars and minus one pesky ring of 3 wishes. Tentamorts are simple nothing special monsters, but after that encounter, I guarantee you that even 20 years later, those players would still be looking up before they approached anything vaguely resembling a pillar or a column. Its like you only step on a trapper one time before your thief learns to actually use his 10 foot pole.
After tasha's cauldron everything, I can see a scribe wizard and this dragon getting along really well. Because this wizard can make a magical scroll essentially for free every day. potentially 3 if they are an elf. Either this dragon could be a good ally or simply a friend for our little scribe.
Oh ya I saw this little guy once on the internet when I was compiling a tiny list of possible dragons to bring into 5e. Never did make the stats for him and the Pink Dragon.
I'd love to play these with a more bardic twist, that instead of just spell tomes they're able to enter story and song books, perhaps even drag the party into a book with them.

They would also be created by both Wizards (as a kind of living spellbook), Warlocks (as a medium of their patron and living magical contract), and Artificers (crafted living construct) to act as their familiars
If Ryuk used the Deathnote to gift Light spells, they would literally be a D&D warlock/patron combo. At that point, you can put the entire storyline in Cormyr, since the law enforcement method of the Forest Kingdom allows the nobility to plot against each other assuming none of it leaves the shadows....
A nice little guardian for the openminded wizard school, feed them the students' early and poorly written scrolls that would blow up, and have the most unique classroom pet

They can teleport via books, using a kind of pocket dimension? That sounds like Terry Pratchett's concept of "L-Space," caused by the high concentrations of the power held in libraries. After all if all power = energy & energy = mass, and a large enough mass can distort the shape of space-time, then it follows that as knowledge = power, then libraries have enough power to distort space-time. Now imagine magical libraries & how much knowledge/power/energy/mass is stored there. I'd suggest that L-Space must be where they brood, probably upon the higher shelves.

I wonder, could the dragon "appear" out of a wizard's spell book while the party is traveling? Seems like an interesting random encounter or the dragon uses it to scout potential intruders when they near its lair.
I can picture a wizard or some librarian setting up a trap library with the paper dragon as the boss with animated origami creatures, a jewelry box size mimic and monster books like from 2nd harry potter movie to protect the real library or guard a few of the most prized books or items

Awsome little beasties! I got a bit of nostalgia on this one too. He throws sheets of paper into the air as a way of casting "Oragami I", which is a mutation of Monster Summoning I but it manifests as enchanted animated origami monsters. So you just doin the not so serious Monstrous Compendium then - I AM FULL ON BOARD WITH THIS PLAN. Also Paper Dragons be neat - I like the Scalamagdrion more
Oh no, the next one is from Spelljammer.
@@AJPickett Interesting
Making creatures of paper should be a way of books having a different form
Paper Dragons ... Reminds me of the scp
There was once a paper dragon who tried weight training to increase it's strength attribute... he didn't stop until he got ripped.
😂🤣😂🤣 that's a good one
So this is where the Dragons went
Hmmmm I wonder if a wizard character could possibly in exchange for extra spell scrolls summon one in battle. It might be a future character idea later. Just me thinking aloud.
