If In Flames didn’t invent melodic death metal, they cemented the genre’s arrival with Lunar Strain and Subterranean, and if those were early blueprints to the burgeoning style, the Swedes’ The Jester Race and Whoracle were the impeccable benchmarks that made the aggressive artform matter. They’ve continued to push the genre forward with ten subsequent releases-including 2023’s raw, visceral Foregone-further strengthening their core sound that, at its heart, is a modernized blend of intensified Iron Maiden and accelerated Black Sabbath.
Before the band’s headlining show at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works, In Flames’ Björn Gelotte, Chris Broderick, and Liam Wilson welcomed PG’s Perry Bean for a conversation about their powerful setups. Gelotte detailed his workingman’s signature Epiphone Les Paul Custom before his tech Greg Winn showcased a pair of unknown Marshall prototype amps never featured on a Rundown. Shredmeister general Chris Broderick discussed hands-on approach to designing his signature sound that includes a beveled Jackson Diabolic CB2, modified DiMarzio humbuckers, and a thumbpick he invented. Lastly, Wilson compared the requirements and difficulties between playing bass with Dillinger Escape and In Flames before dissecting his morphing setup that’s trying to feel like home but honor Peter Iwers and Bryce Paul thunderous footsteps.

Liam seems like a very cool dude. Thank you for including the bass rig!
You bet!
Perrys responses remind me of when i tried to work in sales talking to a customer.
🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
Thanks for including the bassist and his rig!!!
We always try, time permitting!
Our pleasure!
In Flames goes through bassists and drummers so quickly these days I have a hard time keeping track of them and I've been a fan since 1995.
Broderick, such a genuine guy!!! Playing is off the charts!!!!!!
How he feels about Inflames, growing up and playing guitar is mutual. This was a great video. Cheers.
I was at this show and got to meet Perry! It was such a good time.
I was at this show too!
Saw In Flames this feburary and its something I still haven't gotten over yet. We hardly get good bands in India and talking about these melo death legends it was a dream come true. I carried a big mount board with "In Flames We Trust" painted on it, was cool to get acknowledged by these guys.
In Flames we trust 🤘🔥
Ampeg SVT 4 Pro is a GREAT bass amp!!!
I liked the Soilwork call out, such an underappreciated band in the genre.
This video is SO GOOD... Thank you guys & thank you Premier Guitar for making this happen!!! Every time In Flames is in NYC, I'm there & doing the meet & greet, because the guys are just so genuine & cool. They've never sounded better live & the new tunes are absolutely incredible!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dillinger Escape Plan is my favorite band and In Flames got me into metal like 25 years ago so this lineup and rundown put a huge smile on my face.
We need a Big Wreck Rig rundown. The have the best live sound
YESSSS!!!!!! And Tea Party !!!
YES!!!!!!!!
Absolutely.
Wow, this RR takes me way back!! We Root to Remain and Stabbing the Drama inspired so much of our jams and various bands growing up. Thanks for this, and I can't wait to see Soilworks!! Much respect and appreciation, Perry and PG!!
One of my favorite bands from my childhood, thank you for the video!
I remember way back around 2004 when Bjorn and Jesper were using Pod Pro XTs for cleans and Peavey 5150 IIs.
I felt that intro, well stated! ❤🤘
Glad you liked it!!
Thanks homie!!!
I skipped it actually 😅
I just want to chime in that I had a VERY similar formative experience with In Flames. Mid to late 90s I first heard them and it absolutely blew me away. Opened the door to super heavy and harmonic metal and changed the direction of my guitar playing completely. So stoked you did this!!!
Nice! Been getting back into In Flames when I found Chris joined, been listening a whole lot more. They where my band as a teen, pplin high school with bands or instruments wanted to sound like metallica and misfits or grindcore bands. But this was the band and they shaped how I play guitar. I learned how to play lead lines(not solo) but now when I write I listen to melodies a lot more and just love these guys. One of the goats of metal.
You guys always deliver da goods btw...DIMARZIO RULES!!!
FINALLY. The band that got me into metal
So much better watching this without ads than reading through the article filled with ads.
Hey this is awesome Perry🤘🏻 you do a great job on these rig rundowns man ❤
Thank you!!!
Saw them in NC last month. They fucking CRUSHED IT! Great job here as always too, Perry! 👏🏻
Yo fui a ese show!!! primera vez viendo a In Flames en vivo, un conciertazo!!!!!
Such a genuine guy Chris seem to be. Thanks for a great video!
My story is nearly identical - Clayman changed my life and I started playing guitar not long after. Bjorn is the coolest and his drumming on The Jester Race and Whoracle is also fantastic.
I'm stoked. I'm a huge in flames fan.
This was awesome! It's also cool to see how Chris's rig has changed over the years too. I had the pleasure of opening for Act of Defiance *one of his bands* a number of years ago. Turned out we used the same wireless channel, when we went to sound check I got to play through the big boy rig 😅😂 needless to say, I was the one changing my channel😅 but he was seriously such a nice dude!
Epiphone needs to do a bucket head sig
I agree with this sentiment
I talked with a rep a while ago. How guitar body is bigger than a normal Gibson so it's hard for them to figure out a way to build them.
@@XMetalChefX Thanks for checking. Its not rocket science though, im sure they'll figure it out xP I'd love to have that longer scale too, would be nice
Nice to see this. Love these guys!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dude, I say the same thing about Sweden all the time. So much favorite music from there!
One of my favorite metal bands of all time 🔥
Love this band!
Very cool interview!
Excellent job Perry. This was my favorite Rig Rundown and I’ve seen so many. 🔥🔥🔥🤘🏼🤘🏼
Chris was sooooo good in megadeth. glad to see he is still growing with in flames
This was f'n awesome!
This is great. Thx Premier Guitar 🙂🤘
Glad you like it!
Rig Rundown whith City and Colour please!
Bjorn's picks are great, i got one when they played in Argentina
I really dig Chris' ENGL Savage. Definitely gonna check this amp out.
I once snapped a 135 B string with my thumb metal slappin' 😂
I remember stripping every guitar we owned of its pickups and adding an 81 lol. That pickup is literally the best! Angels beneath me used them exclusively
Long live In Flames!
Anyone know anything about what Bjorn is talking about with working with Nueral DSP???? An IF/ Bjorn plugin???? That would be awesome.
Let’s goooo Chris!
If you guys ever get the chance to do this for Insomnium, that would be great.
Great job 😊 what pick gauge he use ??
Love Rig run down! Please do brandon and Ryan aaaand Brian from Black Dahlia Murder!!!
It's a great video.
The Diabolic is like an alien version of the Rhoads V. That’s a cool spin on it.
26:42 Isn't that the magazine next door? 😂
I don't remember anyone in the band swearing like once. The PG presenter was swearing constantly like an adult trying to look cool around teenagers. It's a bit lame.
Didn't notice, I don't assign morality to words
@@ileutur6863Bjorn did in the beginning
Power tubes are 6550’s, which are what Zakk Wylde likes to use
Please some new gear setup from DEFTONES
Very interesting that he used a Kerry King Marshall
Definitely cool seeing Chris, I don’t know a whole lot about In Flames since I don’t listen to them so I didn’t know he was in this band. I mainly know him from his time in Megadeth but he’s undoubtedly a fucking beast of a guitarist and I love his tones
damn dude youre in for a treat being able to listen to an artist you like and not having to listen to dave mustaines vocals
@@sixthgatebass I know that Dave’s singing is incredibly divisive for some people but I still like it, makes his voice distinctive for a reason
In Flames with Chris Broderick is the tightest live sound they've had in years. I saw them in November with Meshuggah, and they sounded great.
Check out the Jag Panzer albums he's on.
IN FLAMES ❤
I haven’t been to Sweden, but my music has. Project 4:13 “Couldn’t Say How” (Crossfire Mix) here on RUclips.
Yeah the ENGL Savage from Chris is a sick amp
In flames the best. Most amazing band anders the best front man bring back old school flames
DO MASTODON !!!
They have 2 rundowns I think
That Jackson sig is sweet (the Diabolic)
That Perry Bean is one fine piece of ace 😍
Pshhhhh you are!
@@perrybean9153 love you boo 😘🙌😘
🔥
Perry does fanboy correct. Good show!
still remember i brought my guitar to local luthier to drop tune my LTD EC from E standard to drop Bb. he's an old school so really not use to drop tuning stuff. most customer came for max was for drop D lol he said "I thing u bought a wrong string. this is a baritone string" lol then i showed him a website that list out guitarist gear. i believe it was jesper gear. using elixir 12-68 string drop tune to Bb. he was like "wow tuned to drop Bb? really?" lol
Chris has been using our Decimators since 2008!
Nice! I myself have been using them since 2004!
Need updated Bjorn Signature
I think Sweden and Finland make great music because they accept that genre as "popular". They have more time also locked away in dark winters to write. In Finland amorphis is one of the highest selling bands in history there. Just a different place. America unfortunately cares only about 1 thing and that's money. Not art. And people here unfortunately just follow the herd. Japan is also very metal and rock dominant.
I can’t find anything online about Björn’s MD61 heads - I wonder if they are part of the renewed push on the tube amp side of the business Marshall’s new CEO mentioned not too long ago?
Cool stuff though !! :3
I remember seeing some info years ago about them. To my knowledge, they were prototype amps for Doug Aldrich, and Bjorn even got to borrow some from Doug. He absolutely loved them and was able to track a couple of them down. I've personally only ever seen one go up for sale, and it was $2700+.
The tech did mention that he's been hassling Marshall about them since 2012, so it sounds like they're an old prototype that just never made it to production.
That’s awesome - thanks for your knowledge guys !!
You're welcome, dude! They do sound absolutely killer, and Marshall should seriously rethink releasing them with the new management.
Wow they really care about quality and customer service. Gibson and B.C. Rich should be taking notes.
Great video. Next time a little low cut on the voices, please ;)
Conti is an amazing player.
Björn Gelotte, da mif da legend... The Beard!
Liam
If Liam is chasing a pick sound, why doesn’t he use a pick? Why his fingers?
Chris not using Axe fx anymore, surprised
perry should talk over the musicians more lol
5:30 Spinal Tap moment
The Isolation Cabs Bjorn uses are called the Box of Doom. I own one. They are THE best Isolation cabs out there. I don't know how they did it. But they figured out how to get rid of that boxy sound that came with every other Isolation Cab. I have owned a dead room, the Randall, the Mesa, the Riviera silent sister. The Jet City,
DO NOT do what i did, and think you can EQ the boxiness out. You can't. It will be there and drive you insane. Lol. The Box of Doom cabs are not that much more expensive than the others. Even shipped from them to the USA. And they added casters on my cabinet. Great customer service. It sounds like I am kissing their asses but I just can't believe they were able to kill that boxy sound. That right there is worth an extra $2,000 to me. Even though they don't even charge that. Buy one, u will not be disappointed. There Is a reason In Flames, Trivium and other bands use them.
rig rundown with dillinger when
Already happened with Ben: ruclips.net/video/g_YWRFdBFso/видео.htmlsi=H1Hzc56VbVhaMyCB
I still miss jesper 😢😢
Me too He's true In Flames Icon
You listening to HALO EFFECT ?
@@andrewgrant6612Halo Effect is weak as shit.
Better off listening to The Resistance or Dimension Zero for more Jesper.
Most of that Halo Effect shit is written by Niclas anyway.
metal with no amps on stage makes me sad
Yep
True, but at least In Flames still uses real amps live.
@@AdrianNWB old guys still play tube amps crazi
@@laudennnThat’s because real amps sound better.
CAN YOU PLEASE TRY TO GET A RIG RUNDOWN WITH ALEXISONFIRE
👍👍🍺.
never heard this band name
We want to meet Fish (piranha btw)
these ads LMAO
The Gothenburg sound is cool, but I've always preferred the Stockholm sound.
Much filthier.
Real Amps Forever 💫 Ha Ha , dogs love too piss in cabs ?
...and all this amps which have a killer sound on cabinets go through an in ear headphone in the end....
all punch and atmosphere is really gone... Metal guitar playing in 2024...
sad but true
You have obviously never played with a proper in ear sound then.. you‘d be blown away with their IEM sound.
you say "ya know" a lot
Holy shit, Perry is so nervous and fidgety, something’s up…
I loooove Chris Broderick so so much! He is such a humble guy without an ego, also my favorite guitarist megadeth ever had after Marty, BUT... his tone SUCKS!
That whole rig sounds like a line6 spider
If I can tell to Bjorn I'll tell him = Hey Bro Quad Cortex is waiting for you.
Terrible interviewer
0This guy is the worst in PG. Please don't do it with him. He swears a lot, doesn't know what to ask and how. He has no opinion of his own. He flatters everything everyone says, he mimics the position of the artist/tech. Absolutely no idea of his own. Silly questions, laughs and then another stupid private info no one cares.
Chris is the best with people and rig, he kills with charisma and brightness.
Perry is the worst, can't stand in one place, nervous all the time. "yeah yeah" and can't say "Fuck" every 3 sentences.

Holy shit man, you must be an absolute blast to hang with!
@@perrybean9153 and? That's not the point.
😂😂😂 a setlist is hilarious. This guy would do better to just let the artists talk
Perry is such a suck up. Every interview he flip flops on his opinion to what the artist or guitar tech says. “Ive never liked that”, “ive actually always said thats what everyone needs”. Lollollol
yeah, he has zero opinion of his own :D what artist/tech says, Perry says too.
And of course he swears like it is 1990 and you wanna be the cool kid.
At least he asks details and has some conversation. Hate to listen to Joe and his "yeah", "me too", "yeah", "right?", "yeah". This type of videos should be presented by some real gear nerds imo.
