Jan, I am 40, male, white, and divorced, and in Oregon. He speaks to me, as well. I haven't been in the woods in three weeks, and though it is pouring here, i shall go and build a fire with my fire kit, today.
I am 46 years old and have a 5 year old son. I take him into the woods every couple of weeks and teach him the plants and animals (at least the ones I know about) and we talk about life and nature. I want him to grow up being able to articulate his feelings and how to be self reliant and a help to others around him. While many people want their kids to have the things they didn't have when they were little, I just want my son to grow up to be the person I failed to be many times because nobody took the time when I was little to help me be a better man when I got older.

As a boy I grew up reading about men in rough country. I read about the Vikings, the prospectors in the gold rushes of North America, the trappers. I said I felt like I would someday have to start from nothing and survive in the wilderness. Now, at almost thirty years of age, I feel like I am in the wilderness. All the works of our fathers seem to be torn down or falling apart. Our people seem lost, to have forgotten how to survive, yet alone live. So, now, I am building. I am building up a life which doesn't require other people. A life of self reliance. A life which can provide for my wife and daughter, come what may from the outside world. And all of those old stories from men living in rough country come back to me. Ways to survive. Ways to live. Guidance, from our forebearers. And the very old stories. The archetypes, the gods. The heroes of old. They are almost as good as a blanket, for a man at drift in a rudderless world.
I am with you on this. I am not self reliant, but much more so that I talk about.
@@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen Believe me, I am nowhere near that end goal either, but each day I work towards it, asking myself "what can I do today, to further my end goal". I meant to compliment your story. The same with the stories that guide me. They all tell of men pulling themselves up and surviving, through their own action. Of having to light a fire, because they are a thousand miles from the nearest soul that could save them. Of Odin gathering wisdom for ragnarøk. Of action for the betterment of one's position. And emphasis on saving one's self, not waiting for the hand of some other to come along, because there is no other to do so.

@@baroneb5043 We interact. We exchange niceties. And we are friends to degrees with people we share some commonality with. But to be honest, I would not choose demons over being alone. I would not choose hungry ghosts over the company of my family. I can tell you now, interaction with most of these broken souled beings just makes me sad and tired. They are truly lost. Without principle. And I believe I am better off without them. I am sure they feel much the same about me. I am not much fun to show off a new cellphone to, and I've seen none of the latest shows.
@@Neon_Caveman I like these thoughts... To be able to rely on ourselves gives us a lot of freedom. We can inspire others to take responsability thus help to change their lifes for better. We are social beings and existance IS relationship; many people forget unfortunately that the first relationship is the one to themselves. Why? because they are lost in the noise around them. So in the seclusion of nature and being alone in the woods we can heal ourselves by listening to the cracking of the inner fire, the whispering of our heart. That is for me the best service I can give to others. The stronger I am the more I can serve. The more I serve the more power comes to me. The more power comes to me, the more I can serve and the more meaning is given to my life in consequence.

Two important words: "take responsibility." It all starts there.
Never take responsibility without also talking the associated authority. If you cannot, do not take that responsibility. Example: What is the point of talking responsibility for the good order and maintenance of your property if you do not have the authority to legaly enforce your property rights? Without that authority anybody could come on to your property, dump trash, wreck things, perform illegal activites, etc. and you would still remain responsible for the consequences. Another example is being a male breadwinner in a family. You effectively take responsibility for her upkeep, but modern laws have made it impossible for you to exert any control on her spending of the money YOU earn, or talking you to the cleaners in divorce court on a whim.
Effectively, responsibility without authority makes you nothing more than a willing tool to be used, abused, and discarded, by a person, persons, or society in general.

I was just out of the military and suddenly I found my home situation deteriorated and then I found myself homeless. I lived in my truck through the worst winter in Wisconsin history in over 100 years.
I to found that the little things is what leads to the bigger success in life. By the springtime I had earned and saved enough money to get an apartment. But then my truck went kaput/died on me.
So on to another chapter in my life and again it was the little improvements that I had benefited from that shaped the current state of my existence .
I am indeed blessed and I know this and I thank the Creator and the ancestors for their guidance and blessings.
I firmly believe that prepping, gardening, bush craft and taking your ego out of your thought process is the way to live and what should be taught to the next generation and to anyone who will have a open mind and open heart towards the lessons they will get from learning and from this lifestyle.
I appreciate your videos. I appreciate you sharing your story with others. I wish you success with your RUclips channel and in all you seek to do.
Glad you survived this winter, worst winter in 60+ years in my area. I hope you're in a better living situation.
I here you. After the army I lived in a tent in the mountains for 8 months. I was totally lost and just wandered for what felt like an eternity. Drink and woman was all I cared about. Then the Allfather saved me.

Many of us who have done hard manual labor jobs in our youth will have things like worn out joints, hips and knees and arthritic fingers latter because we just 'pushed on through' as younger men. But one can never stop doing- because we all want to 'find the one thing that will make our lives better-starting today'. The BEST to you brother.

@TheWildsourdough True, and I am 66 years old doing the same 'manual labor', slower/smarter, but still moving forward, after 45 years. I chose the work, and will continue until death or infrimity overtakes me.

This is something I had to learn for myself. We live in a now society, people see where they are, where they want to be, and think they have to do it all at once. People with this mentality get overwhelmed and give up. Set an end goal and slowly work toward that goal. The journey toward the goal is what shapes and changes us.
It’s a realistic beautiful way to move on when you need to and also to remember a dear friend

I am aware this video is a few years old now, but I am going through them and watching those that peak my interest. I am very glad I watched this one in particular, because I feel as though it confirms my decision to start practicing bushcraft. The whole reason I decided to get into bushcraft, is because I felt like I was losing passion for life, and I was in a rut. Then the idea of bushcraft, self reliance, discipline, came to me. Now, after watching this video, I have no doubt I have made the right decision. Thank you for taking the time to create this content. God bless

As a 45 year old black Male I'm learning and appreciating a lot about philosophy, especially about Odin and the Norse Gods. And of course I wear a mjolnir necklace as an archetype for strength of Thor. But also I'm appreciating a lot about life so I truly appreciate this and thank you for bringing this.

That was one of my favorite videos of yours, Bjorn. The tree you were perched upon, the fire starting tool that was gifted to you & the fire it created, imagining the delicious smell of the juniper wood, your story and wisdom you shared in your soft Norwegian voice, the beautiful images of you skiing in the woods, the chocolate coffee.....it all had a very warm Winter feel to it. Thank you for sharing all of that with us.
A few decades before you were born, I was barely a teenager. Do not remember the exact year. Back then we didn't mark time with our years, but the seasons of the year, and our lives. Weather forecasting was starting to come out of the dark ages and becoming a science. In fact it wasn't long before that. when forecasts were military secrets.
I had walked out in the early morning before sunrise, telling my parents I was headed "up the back". Being city bred, they just assumed it was nearby, not 2-3 miles into the bush. To them I was just being their strange son, But so long as I was home on time, and caused no grief, it was all good.
So there I was, had my small fire and leanto. Heated up some canned beans, with a couple of slices of bread, and a hot cup of sumac tea, heated in the cup, melted snow. No Thor's hammer. Wood matches, in a film canister :D Not the great bush craftier. Did have a home made pipe, (which I kept hidden from my family) and was smoking dead cedar leaves LOL
The east wind was light and snow began lightly. The clouds off to the west, where storms came from,were a deep blue grey. It would have been about midday, and I knew I had to head home early. To beat sunset and additional snow, about 4ish. Cleared up the campsite and packed up, and started homeward. As I walked, after a while the wind had picked up, and the snow, became heavier, Blocking the view at times as I crossed farm fields. Slowing me down. Sunset came and I was about knackered, pushing through the deepening snow. The short cut I was taking was taking me across more farmers fields. I was counting fence rows, that had been built by people in the mid 1900's. Cold with the blowing wind, and having only Wellingtons for foot gear. I was a quarter mile from home, crossing a field when I lost a boot in the deep snow, now up above my knees. Spent a few valuable minutes digging it out. Getting home without it was NOT an option I relished. I could see the lights of the village between the bands of falling snow, and safety was there. Pushing on to the next fence line, and then next. I made it home, carrying both boots. They wouldn't stay on. But before I went in, I shook them out, and put them on. Opened the door to see Mom in the kitchen making dinner. She just looked up once, to see who it was and no comment. I went about the business of putting my winter clothes away, and headed upstairs to my room with my backpack.
It was out of that experience I first realized, that I had no one to depend on in an emergency but myself. Whatever difficulties I got into, or dangers I chose to take on, it would be up to me to get myself out of. There was no magic god or goddess, no human, who was going to suddenly appear out of no where. But it showed me too, that I was more than capable of doing what was necessary to cope with life. With a "bloody mindedness" that would ignore the circumstances and laugh in the face of the universe when it turned against me. The only times I fell down, off that lofty height, was when I depended on other relationships. They have always proved to be built on shifting sand.
Oh, in case you are wondering about the cold on my feet. I have been blessed to be able to ignore the cold. I'm known for stepping out without coat or anything on my feet. It's not that I don't feel it, I just ignore it as best I can. Though I have to admit, after 7 decades it is getting harder to go out longer than 10-20 minutes. Blame it on the Doctor's pills LOL. Only have had frostbite once, on a clear day, with a breeze as light as a feather, and I foolishly wore no hat, and my right ear froze up after a half mile walk. Didn't feel it until I got home, and began to thaw out. I'd left my gym bag on the school bus. Of course it was my mistake, so up to me to deal with it. Later learned that it had been down below -20 c. before wind chill. I was in grade 11.

Great story. I feel a bit wiser listening to it as I've been out in the wilderness to the intermediate extent. I never learned to sit and create fires, smoking cedar leaves LOL, but the experience I did have was similar to being hours away alone in Texas heat in a semi-wild territory. I did this for a few months before I was approaching 21 yrs old. But then I was not seeing reality, as you were. I didn't witness self sufficiency or the fact that relationships could as well be built on sand to fall from lofty heights. I may have recognized such things, but my mental health was not in a good way at that time. Had I been sober in my teenage years I would have advanced more maturely, but I still see what I went through as valuable because it is connected to what I learned from your story as well as other things from Bjorn's channel.

Wonderful take away from a difficult time in your life. 💗 I went through a horrific experience about 5 years ago, and in order to steer my thoughts to a more positive direction, I started a gratitude journal. At the end of each day, I wrote down 3 things I was grateful for. In the beginning, I was hurting so badly physically and emotionally, the best I could come up with was a roof over my head, a warm place to sleep, and food in my cupboard. Five years later, gratitude is a part of my waking life, all day long, and it's been my salvation. 🙏💗
You are a good person and great role model for all of us. It's interesting watching you while it's over 40 degrees (centigrade) in Australia with bushfires raging within site of home.

@@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen Hi Bjorn ; bush fire season is dangerous here in Australia! ! - the fire can travel faster than you can run .And the intense heat can cause all types of crazy effects and explosions .I have a story about bushfire , trekking and "what I did to improve my situation " - which ties into what you said.I found your video a good reminder . I can do something to improve my situation. Imay not be facing bush fire or intense environmental situations, but I am facing my own mind which can be equally as dangerous but can also be dealt with and improved, using your anecdote.
See your blessings clearly, make good choices, keep building on that. Good stuff Bjorn. I'm 71, I've known hardship, struggle, and success. Life requires that you live it.

It can be a good experience to end up in the “basement” sometimes, it forces you to look at yourself, your situation, and to try and find another path.
What a fantastic takeaway from this conversation. The basement is the foundation in which a home is built upon. We often forget that the response to the struggles of our life is what makes so much of our character.

I am lucky I found your channel and saw this video long ago, I have always remembered this story. It saved me and helped me when I recently (2019) divorced my wife. Many things in my life have changed ,but in good ways. One of the many things that have changed is that I am now a non smoker. I smoked since I was 13 and now 50. I found myself and that is what lead me to your channel. My Ancestors are with me and they know I will continue to live an honorable life to ensure my honorable death. I will always move forward and never take a knee during any of my battles I have with fate. Thank you Bjorn ,I consider you my brother.

I have taken to your videos. They represent something I have been searching for/contemplating about for most of my young life.
I was given my own blanket, once, and at that moment I decided I had to take control of a life I never thought was my own. Now, perhaps, I am better off than I was.
I have done things I thought to be impossible, things that were but a dream, now reality. Saw my part of the world, and became an author. All thanks to a subtle push towards betterment.
Getting back to nature breaths life into ones soul....it revitalized in a way that is the best high life can give..it is natural , peaceful and expansive....

But my grandmother used to say some get aces and some get deuces, it’s up to us to make the best of the hand we have been dealt! Ad that is how I live my life. Love the channel! In 2010 I lost someone to suicide, and I had a horrible mental collapse; which developed into a schizoaffective disorder. I was 22 when the whole things happened, I am 29 now. It took me 2 or 3 years to come back from insanity. Medication and Therapy helped, and these last 5 years I have attempted to grow my understanding of exploring and surviving the back country.
I am so very glad to have come across this video. I found out about bushcraft during some rough days. I love getting out and feeling self-sufficient. And I completely understand how improving one small thing at a time can exponentially grow into something great.

i always preach saftey and respect for the forest. My Son is learing fast. We made 1 fireplace we've been using for 10 years. We've been clearing leaves and dead wood these last few days. Sharing these experiences with Him are truly amazing

I've lived a hardened life in my childhood, parents did drugs so as a teen I worked hard and took custody of my younger siblings and raised them until I was in my mid 20s when they were grown. I've lived a very blessed life as an adult, worked really hard but very blessed,while my friends partied, I had a reason to be responsible but had never found faith in anything other than myself. I read thru most religions and nothing spoke to me until I found the story's of my people , since my parents weren't around I had no connection to my heritage. So I found the story's of Odin, and my people, and I share them with my son now. People have lost touch with what responsibility is because for most it really has no meaning. Our lives are easier today than ever before but that came at a price. We've lost the connection to ourselves and the earth that our forefathers had because they had to. I really like your story bro and thank you for sharing it, we need more of us in the world now more than ever brother.
I just noticed that your firestone has the shape of Thor's hammer haha (oh you explain it is indeed that just minutes later)! Thank you for your uploads! For 7 months now I am discovering or rediscovering (hehe) our true European culture. Your channel amongst others has opened my eyes about what we have lost, how to improve myself and how to embrace this beautiful earth and life here. I never knew my father, he left when I was a very small child. Listening to you talking at campfires gives me the idea of a father talking to me and sharing wisdom and calmness.

Dear Nathan, I am sorry to hear about your father. I sometimes like to think that we Norsemen have two fathers, and as I have gotten older, Odin has become quite important to me. I also like to communicate with Orion and his dog up on the sky, but that's just me being my out in the woods, haha. Thank you for your kind words, my friend.
To me hiking alone in the woods always means getting connected with nature, with the spirits around me. Quite often I think of my father, my grandfather, my grandmother and other relatives who have passed away. In the woods we are connected. I learnt what Björn once told: Rest calm and patient at one place and watch who comes near to you. Be respectful when entering the home of the small people - they are the link.
Then when you thankfully leave and a raven flies your direction, looks down from above saying one or two times “krok” you feel deeply satisfied and lucky for a long time.
I hope you’ll make such experiences and get connected to your father.
I am so drawn to you and your videos, they bring such comfort and positivity. You are very calming to watch and I love your views on the world xx

I just found your channel recently, and I don't think I've ever felt so happy just listening to a man, let alone a Norwegian, just chatting by a campfire. No cuts between when you kindle the fire, fetch more firewood, or just space out for a few seconds. It felt genuine, like a normal conversation you'd have where you don't talk all the time.
You leave space for me as a listener to actually listen and process what you've said.
I felt like a little kid spending a day with my dad or older brother at home, and I don't think I've actually ever smiled unconsciously so much while watching a youtube video.

I'm currently homeless and in a shelter. All I see are men who don't try and yet tell others how to do things. Riding the wave of charity of others. My point: they don't want to make their lives better. Any advice?
Ian C, You give sound advice, stranger. I plan to do for myself, and have leads and means to find a stable home to live, yet in the time it will take to secure my placement, I will be around a couple that I believe to be genuinely good men that I'd like to help as best I can. But it is taxing to be a provider to men older and with more experience than myself. I find that I'm becoming bitter- as Bjorn stated in his video- and it's almost crushing my desire to be good and do good for those who won't do it for themselves.
I would say try to get some structure in your life and then some work. It is less important what kind of work it is in the start. Use what you have to build a better every day life for yourself and never, ever give up on your dreams. Work hard, and you will get there. I promise.
I was in the same situation as you. I wasn't in a shelter, but a friend of mine gave me a key. The key was to a mausoleum in a cemetary that he was the groundskeeper at. I lived in it, surrounded by the dead, but I was warm and dry. The last coffin placed where I lived was over 150 years old. As I layed on the floor at night, it was not hard to think of how fortunate I was to not be bones in a box. It made me think about all of the living I had to do and motivated me to make things happen for myself. I used the address to the cemetary to get a job at a restuarant so I could eat. I saved all my money and soon had a place of my own. When I gave the key back to my friend he said " You got yourself out of there quicker than I did. Nothing makes you feel like living more than having 12 dead roomates."

i currently live in a apartment, but are almost seeking to be "homeless" or rather i will probably find some place in the woods and dig a hole and build a roof over it but the plans before that is at least going out in the forest and setup a tent and bury some food. im planning to move the cat there also and to only use apartment for some minor work. i do not work, or rather i havent paid income tax since the towers fell. wtc 2001, and im not planning doing so either, at least until a big change of governments. i believe what we work is very important. to support people in their perverted ways is the last thing i want to do.

Me as well. I was homeless-in a tent for 4 months. I developed an idea to do just one thing-complete a task, when finished , just do one thing, when finished-do one thing. All to improve my situation. No getting overwhelmed-just rather simply satisfied with each thing. Fast forward 12 years later I have such an abundant happy life just by doing one thing to improve my life.

Self reliance is essential for your heart & mind. Being sentimental shows you have heart.. Thinking about ways to improve your situation shows you have mind. Well put! Life is a journey of learning; and like your education, what you gain from it is what you make from it. I'm 69 and a long time ago someone taught me to ask "What can I say or do right now to make things better?" That is quite close to your question to yourself. And I've had more recoveries than failures and I strongly believe that our attitude, our internal conversation with our selves, is a precious asset. Tie this line of thinking to your video on Stoicism and one could make an argument for a good mental health plan for an enjoyable life. Well done.
