This is not a live performance. This song was recorded while Freddie was battling his symptoms from HIV/AIDS, “The Show Must Go On” is a compellingly powerful final coda to Freddie’s legacy. The song closes Queen’s final studio album released during Freddie’s lifetime.
While "The Show Must Go On” was mainly written by lead guitarist Brian May, the song’s theme is driven by the probability it would be Freddie's “finale”. His severe symptoms made recording difficult. (But it wasn't, Freddie's finale recording is the song "Mother Love".)
Freddie’s struggles with HIV/AIDS were kept secret from the public at large until his official 1991, November 23rd, press release divulging that he was, in fact, dying from AIDS-related complications.
Previously the British paparazzi had speculated and cruelly reported that Freddie was diagnosed with the disease (from the time his diagnosis was “leaked”), and proceeded to stalk him, adding insult to injury. The paparazzi made his last days miserable as they hounded him.
Intentionally or not, Freddie’s announcing his illness on November 23rd was prescient; approximately 24 hours after the press release, Freddie Mercury died (November 24, 1991).
During these last recording sessions sometimes Freddie was so ill he could barely walk, making the recording process erratic, emotionally wrought, and logistically difficult for the band, especially for guitarist Brian, a studio perfectionist.
Brian told a feeble Freddie not to over-exert himself during a session for the final track’s vocals, intimating he wasn’t up to the challenge. According to Queen lore, a frustrated Freddie responded by slamming a shot, or two, of vodka, saying, “I’ll fucking do it, darling”.
Brian recalled Freddie’s performance, "He went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal".
The half-mic stand was one of Freddie's trademarks. The story is that during Freddie’s pre-Queen days, when he was a member of a group called Wreckage, his mic got stuck on the boom stand and he pulled so hard to separate the mice from the boom that ended up breaking the stand. He continued the performance with the boom half of the mic stand still connected to the mic. Oddly, he found that liked it. It gave him a prop to play with while performing.

Queen never performed The Show Must Go On live. This must be a fan compilation of live concert footage with the recorded track.. Freddie was too ill and had already stopped performing when this song was recorded for the Innuendo album. The vocals are incredible considering Brian May didn’t even think Freddie would be able to sing it. Freddie gave 110% as always. Worth listening to!

Whoever did it was damn good at cutting and pasting clips where his lip movements synced up with the lyrics of this song then. (Did that make any sense?) It would have taken a LONG time. But now that I'm really watching it I have to agree with you. Freddie looks very healthy here, but he was exceptionally thin and obviously sick when he recorded this.

@@trishc3099 Freddie’s last live performance with Queen was in 1986. This song was recorded between March 1989 until November 1990, a year before Freddie passed away. That’s why Queen’s official video is also a compilation of previous live performances and past videos.

Lead Guitar is Sir Dr. Brian Harold May, PhD, CBE, Astrophysicist, legendary guitar player, animal rights activist, etc., etc., etc. Brian built that guitar with hand tools only, with his dad when he was a teen, from stuff they had laying around the house. The main body was made of wood from a 100 year old fireplace. So on occasion, Freddie referred to Brian's guitar as "The Fireplace" and the least expensive piece of equipment on their tour. Brian named it "The Red Special" and sometimes refers to it as "The Old Lady." He still plays that same guitar today, nearly exclusively.

  • @andreakormosnekacso4804
    @andreakormosnekacso4804 Год назад +42

Sir Brian May is a guitar god and the song was written by him, but Freddie was very very sick at the time of recording, he could hardly stand and even to sit, but he didn't stop and singing and making music kept him alive a little longer.
„That track was strange - recalls Brian. I did the most of the lyrics for Freddie to sing and you can imagine what that felt like. I did ask him at one point if he was okay about it and he said, Yeah, totally okay about it. I will give it my all. And he did. He sang, I think, some of the best vocals of his life on that track, and most of the tracks on that album are incredible. He really was getting very weak by that time, but he could still summon up that strength to sing.”

Hard to believe how advanced Freddie illness was by the time they recorded this song, you can't tell by his vocals because he was fearless to the end and determined to leave as much music behind before he left us. This was not a live performance but a damn good mash-up and if they had performed this live it wouldn't have looked much different. I've been a Queen fan since the 70s, been to hundreds of great concerts but my true regret is never having seen them live before he passed away. 👑

Great reaction to a phenomenal band. Unfortunately, Freddie never got the chance to sing this song live as he was too ill, but sung the song in the studio in one take after downing a very large V+T. The video which has been cleverly put for this song is Freddie singing Who Wants to Live Forever in Budapest in 1986, check that one out too. However, it also seems to fit The Show Must Go On too, very cleverly done. RIP Freddie, my hero ♥

Excellent observation. Freddie had such a powerful voice. Brian said he would listen to Freddie sing a song and then try to copy it. Early in their career Freddie broke the microphone stick. He kept performing and made it part of his thing to help give his hands stuff to do while performing. More Queen! Try Cool Cat, Melancholy Blues, Spread Your Wings, It’s Late.

That is Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist as well as one of the best guitarist ever. Freddie’s microphone broke one time. He decided he liked performing with it. More Queen history! John Deacon is on bass and the underrated Roger Taylor is on drums and backup vocals. He does sing lead on a couple of Queen songs.

Freddie had a full 4 octave range, very rare in a singer. He held back in live performances because he didn't want to hurt his voice, but in the studio he went for it giving every ounce of his powerful voice. A funny thing happened, the sicker Freddie got the more powerful his voice became. Queen's last two official albums are The Miracle and Innuendo and on both albums you can hear this raw power in Freddie's voice that wasn't there before.
