his taste of music is so sophisticating, proven by the way all the songs are perfectly arranged in the movies. After each of his movies, i have one new list of music to keep replaying.
I love this Essay of Xavier's work so far! His films never fail to touch the audience because you always find an aspect in his films that you can relate to even though his films are quite personal. His techniques, the way he uses music to express certain emotions , different types of lighting he truly was meant to be a filmmaker so he can tell the world his stories. Also might I add how he is an amazing actor too! . I've now become a huge fan absolutely loved him in " Tom at the Farm" Superb acting!
Beautiful video essay. I guess I'm not alone in sort of becoming obsessed with Xavier. His creative output is staggering. I wonder how the makers of this video feel about MATTHIAS & MAXIME. I really, really love it. I'm on my 6th or 7th viewing and don't plan to stop for awhile. I haven't seen all his films yet but I'm getting there. MATTHIAS & MAXIME seems like somewhat of a departure from his other films. Thoughts? Thanks, Peter (71 years old)
i've seen the works of filmmakers like francois truffaut, stanley kubrick, andrei tarkovsky, sofia coppola, and many others. dolan is definitely on his way to becoming one of the greats. i've seen all 5 of his films and.... i think he's just getting started.
thevoid99 Hello thevoid99 I too have now seen all of his films, and I was blown away by Mommy, it was a fantastic film , but I have to admit I prefer seeing Xavier himself acting in his films as well as directing them because I think he is such a good actor as for me " Tom at the Farm" proved. But yes! I think he will most definitely go on to be one of the greatest directors/filmmakers of this generation due to the pure fact that he continues to inspire young budding film directors/screen writers and actors by his incredible films.
thevoid99 Not after "Heartbeats". I loathe to use this word when talking about cinema because it should always be objective, but if there was ever any movie that deserves to be labeled "pretentious", that's the one. I think I learned more about the kind of perfume Monia Chokri wore than what kind of a person she was or her passion that drove her other than one-upping her GBF to get some. In general, I think he's pretty good, but I have honestly not seen a single film of his that's genuinely resonated with me or given me any reason to expect him to be on the same level of Godard (even Godard himself looked disgusted when he had to share the award with him at Cannes last year). Except for the Suzanne Clément scenes in "Mommy". Those were perfect. But that's just my two cents on him. Perhaps I'll be proven wrong.
tom à la ferme will forever stay a favourite. The details put into each film regardless if the general public likes it or not make the movie ,automatically, incredibly attractive. what i'd give to spend a day with him on set!
This is fantastic! Dolan is my favourite director and I wanted to thank you for this beautiful essay! He deserves the attention he's getting :) hope to see more video essays soon :)
Dolan steers emotions without agency, it's hard to prick microscopically without overt buildup but he always delivers. Finally an essay that recognizes his style, and doesn't lazily serve 'influences' from aesthetically similar directors as explanation.
Really good video essay, im half way through a video essay im making on Aspect Ratio, talking about Dolan's use of it in Mommy which was brilliantly effective
Yup! The essay was screened right before Mommy at the Canada's Top Ten Film Festival screenings, so we were careful not to talk too much about Mommy or show any clips from the film that might impact the viewing of it afterwards. Thanks for the kind words!
The Seventh Art Since it's being put online, you think you could perhaps just replace those shots with actual shots from 'Mommy' and update it? It is kinda misleading since mist people would assume that is footage from the film... Very nice video essay, nevertheless. :)
Agreed this is such a great compilation, with really strong observations on form and content. The only thing that bothered me was the clips at 3:17 and 9:10 from 'College Boy' instead of Mommy. Anyway I hope this year marks his first oscar nomination.
I have found I love analysis's like these, does anyone know of something similar for reading? A site or book or specific critic who breaks down films similar to this? Cheers
"Los artistas crean, los genios roban" dijo Picasso. Un buen estudiante de cine podrá señalarnos las derivaciones de casi toda la imaginería y técnica de Dolan. Y esto se ve genial.

God you're literally me

Xavier Dolan has been cast as "Adrian Melon" in 'It: Chapter 2".
Once you go Dolan, you'll never go back
Mine too. I watched all his directed films in 4 days.
I keep coming back to this video essay. It's actually so well done.

little did she know, lol. he is still great tho
Wow this was so well done and inspiring to watch. I would love to see more of these essays for other Canadian and/or young, up and coming filmmakers
I don't know why but this essay is really touching, to me.

He's such an inspiring artist in so many ways
I appreciate Xavier Dolan so much

Well told
yes! more essays tiff!
Loved it! Great essay! Would love to see many more :).
Phillip Glass's music combined with Nolan's slowed down or symmetrical shots would be INTENSE!!
Really good video essay, im half way through a video essay im making on Aspect Ratio, talking about Dolan's use of it in Mommy which was brilliantly effective
GENIUS
Brilliant
Wonderful
Love you Dolan
This was so good! I love Dolan!
such a legend
He is beautiful
Great essay!
P.s. Are you aware that when you're talking about Mommy, you're showing shots from the music video he did for Indochine?
Yup! The essay was screened right before Mommy at the Canada's Top Ten Film Festival screenings, so we were careful not to talk too much about Mommy or show any clips from the film that might impact the viewing of it afterwards.
Thanks for the kind words!

J'adore
he is a true legend
I have found I love analysis's like these, does anyone know of something similar for reading? A site or book or specific critic who breaks down films similar to this? Cheers
Lo amo a Xavier Dolan my now amore
Anyone know the name of the song heard at around the (3:00) minute mark?
I can't remember the name of the song but it's from the very end of his film "I killed my mother" so if you RUclips the soundtrack it should appear.
Pikerisht vizioni qe ka e ben kaq unik Dolan-in.
0:52 Please!! the name of this melody!
If I'm not wrong, it is Prokofiev's "Dance of the knights"
@@naomiperez7257 You are like those anonymous heroes! tons of thanks to you!
Bruh. Where is 9:40 from??
Tom at the farm.
3:17... that isn't a clip from "mommy"
Enthusiasm for this cratered when the very first line of voiceover got a fact wrong. J'ai tué ma mère premiered in 2009, not 2008. Please fix!
his stunning mouth hypnotizes me deeply
6:13 so sweet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is the name of the music that opens the video?
Does anybody know what the name of the last song being played is? Or the artist? Cheers!
+FridaKahla Moderat -a new error
Anyone know the name of the final music track in the video?
That's Moderat - A new error
Aurelie D Thank you! :)

A Québécois musician by the name of Nicholas Savard L'Herbier composed the piece for Xavier's J'ai tué ma mère.
Traduction française c'est possible ?
I like “Mommy”. It is masterpiece
I love he's french accent
very dolanesque?
It hurts me to know I will never sleep with this man
