While the points are well taken, most judges also consider the veracity or absurdity of the points of the litigants. If the prosecutor spends so much time arguing that an action job on a trigger shows intent of the shooter’s blood thirst, the prosecutor loses credibility and just wasted his time arguing for a non-factor. The legality of the shot will always primarily be dictated by the circumstances of the unlawful aggression and the action taken by the defender subsequent to that threat, regardless of the firearm used.

I’ve always been told there are like 3 “tiers” of mods. Tier 1: cerakote, red dots, upgrades sights - probably no problems in court as they are all good mods. Tier 2: triggers, barrels and stuff like that - you might not have a problem, but you are opening yourself up to the potential for legal problems. Tier 3: “quotes” or “sayings” like “f around and find out” or “your f’d” or punisher skulls and things like that are usually a bad idea because it gives odd the “impression” you are “looking for a fight”

Anything I carry, I keep the modifications minimal. New grips, or maybe different sights. Outside that, I'm not too keen on making the change for fear of getting an overzealous prosecutor who isn't interested in getting to the truth, but only in ruining someone's life for their own personal gain.

If a self defense case ever went to trial, a lawyer told me-and this is only his experience- juries were more sympathetic, or rather give the benefit of doubt, to accused that used revolvers or traditional rifles (Garand, Henry ect). The appearance should be completely irrelevant, but suppressors or red dots (handgun or rifle) don't always do the accused any favors. *Just to reiterate, this is only one man's experience.

I currently own 8 firearms. Pistols & revolvers. Army veteran 1990s 🎗, ccw license holder. I add parts, get Cerakote but I'd agree 💯. You don't need a $4000 pistol & 24K gold magazines. Keep guns clean, carry or use factory 🚔 rounds. No hand loads, no reloaded ammunition.

correction - at the 3:30 mark Miles says "... That can go against you legally". No - it cannot. The modification may be brought up in a court room and a lawyer may try to influence a judge or jury with your modification, but if your modification, of any kind, did not make that firearm illegal to own, then you have not broken the law and as such those modification cannot be LEGALLY used against you. It is important to understand the law before making this kind of video.

Ok, I've got a different viewpoint. Simply ask the lawyer, why reducing trigger pull is bad? In fact, the reason we reduce trigger pull is so that we can shoot more accurately and make sure we hit the aggressor and not a bystander, that we get good hits so that he or she cannot continue to fight and kill me or other possible bystanders. This makes us safer, not more dangerous and I believe it can be easily demonstrated. But that's just me.

I challenge anyone to find one case where firearm modification was the single deciding factor in losing a court case. Getting to court is priority ONE, proving innocence/lack of culpability depends on a good attorney.
My number one responsibility and reason for EDC? To be there for my family after a “good shoot”.
If it wasn’t a good shoot, I’m screwed anyway.
If it was a good shoot, modifications won’t matter.
If I end up in court unrighteously, either criminal or civil, I need “articulable” reasons for everything, including gun modifications, which will not be a major focus of the case. If my attorney is competent, with my coaching he should be able to explain why any modifications made the gun more reliable, accurate, faster or in any other way gave me a slight edge in defending my life.
I don’t modify with signage or decorations that are silly. Everything modified has a functional purpose. Triggers are all set to 4.25-4.5#.
If someone doesn’t want or need to modify their gun, that’s fine. I just don’t live my life scared of every lawyer shadow that will most likely never cross my path.

The best piece of advice I've ever heard about modifying your firearm is this:
    Don't modify without a purpose.
Be able to logically defend every mod you put on.
Red dot- easier to track a moving target; lighter trigger- less chance to pull off target,
etc. Think about what you're doing and have a reason for it.

I find it interesting when discussions such as this come up and the comment about modified guns, and in particular lightened triggers comes up. Since 1995, I've served as a Police Officer in one of Atlanta's more dangerous and violent suburbs with 90% of my career was in CID as either a working detective or detective/supervisor. I can't ever recall a time in the multitude of shooting investigations that I worked where there was a question about modifications to a weapon. Even at trial, I have never heard this line of questioning and my county is one of the more liberal counties in Georgia. Questions about the legality of the shoot, absolutely. Was the shooter justified in the shooting, absolutely. Was the weapon ever modified, never. By no means is my anecdote saying that it has never happened however I've never seen it and I have butted heads many times with aggressive DA's about what a suspect should and shouldn't be charged with.

There is also a factor of building a gun that is more comfortable and more accurate for a CCW. I understand that something’s may look bad/intent but also make the shooter accurate. I don’t think a hair trigger for a carry gun makes sense, your stress and Adrenalin is up you could easily mistakenly fire or miss. I build a CCW weapon that is better for me allows me to be accurate and in control….. But when purchasing a trigger I kept over 4lbs for those stressful situations and with my old ass eyes do use a dot to insure I hit what I’m aiming at

This really shouldn't be the case. The events of the conflict (was it self defense, and deadly force justified) should be the determining factors. Justice isn't a contest. It shouldn't be about winning. It should be about administering Justice. But it's not. It's become what they used to call it in the 18th century British slang: Just-Ass.

If your old or young and have hand problems. If the armorer changes it he is qualified. If you use hollow points that could be used against you. Your training records and the amount you shoot, with who and what training you receive.

Just carrying and using a gun in self defense will be used against you in court. The modifications on your gun are secondary and if they save your life or others, like a light for proper identification or light trigger for accurate shots, then they are worth it and can easily be explained by a semi competent attorney. I guess everyone should carry a hammer less revolver and shoot it indiscriminately from their jacket pocket. I'm sure a prosecutor would love to point out the wild shots...

Even in commifornia there are counties with agencies and DA’s that will not press charges as long as the preponderance of evidence shows you acted appropriately.

List your formal training, personal training(dry fire/range)
List courses of fire and reasons/ goals in doing so.
Track amount rounds fired per week or Month.
If you do upgrade or change anything on your gun, why? What tesearch did you do about it? Who installed it? When did they? What verification of the upgrade did you do after the install? How many rounds were shot and. At what courses of fire etc before you carried it or made it your primRy def gun at home? See where I am going with this.
