      You're right! USD as a concept (and even as a resource) has been around for a while now. But it's taken a while for the industry (both production and tools) to understand and see the benefit of adopting it into their pipelines. It takes a while to design and build the things needed to support USD, and what we're seeing now is a maturation of those designs into actual usable things that can be practically implemented to make production better.
      Animal Logic (the makers of the Lego Movie, amongst others) and Nvidia are good examples of this adoption trend. It's only going to spread more from here.

    Finally~ a face reveal! Now to the matter at hand, as a 3D artist (who worked in a small studio that receives outsourced works from such big studios), we've encountered USD but we never knew what they are. We called them stand-ins or blocked scenes (as in basic blocking). We, the 3D BG generalists would work on a single asset and then it was up to the lookdev to do the final compositing (both in maya & final renders). So had no idea about this, but it took me 6 years to know thanks to you! :D

    It's the hierarchy of decision-making, and how to rein that in to an achievable goal, which is being addressed here. This is a result of too many individuals making decisions, and their indecisiveness, or misdirection, which trips up productions, usually resulting in everyone blaming the artists. If you're a designer in a too-many-chefs scenario, here's a system which ranks those decision makers and assigns them to tiers ... which is how they are arranged anyway, only now it's embedded in the format, enforcing the discipline and driving decisions to cut costs and improve efficiency.

    • @uzizizu
      @uzizizu 2 года назад +2

      Everyone works as always, but in the end you export your stuff - models (usd type), animation (usd cache), simulation (usd cache ), etc - to usd hierarchy tree (same as outliner in maya) and this usd tree can be opened and viewed in all software that supports usd. The whole team exports their stuff to the same usd tree.

    • @Autodesk_Maya
      @Autodesk_Maya  2 года назад +1

      To expand on uzi zizu's answer a bit: USD actually typically does not even include the rigging. Typically a mesh is animated like normal in Maya, then the resulting skin is output to USD.

    • @pierrebaillargeon9531
      @pierrebaillargeon9531 2 года назад +1

      USD is extensible and a DCC maker like Maya or a studio could design their own extension to store riggging data in USD. In USD jargon, they call this a custom schema.
      Of course, the value of such an extension is proportional to its valid design, felxibility but more importantly adoption.

    • @Autodesk_Maya
      @Autodesk_Maya  2 года назад +2

      It's really quite different. Interoperability with other software and studios supporting USD is a big part of it. Also the whole idea of layers and opinions isn't something that's really possible with referencing.
