    Cool! Maya USD import now has the option of “Payload” or “Reference”, what is the difference? I did not find this in the 2024 manual.

    Quite unintuitive implementation.. things working differently when exporting from different places (File → Export) (Arnold → Scene Export)
    As expected from Autodesk.

    Thanks for the video, but perhaps you could help me out? After I add USD refference the object is not visiable and I do not get any errors. How could I fix this?

      If you open the USD file in a text editor, does the object appear in the code? And does the path for the reference look correct?

    • @richardhaw9757
      @richardhaw9757 9 месяцев назад

      is this 2023 or 2024? if you open the USD file, it should say "prepend reference" and NOT "prepend payload", is this what you are experiencing?

    • @richardhaw9757
      @richardhaw9757 9 месяцев назад

      you can also print to script editor. sounds like a bug/quirk, haiya...

      in your options, when you are selecting the file, be sure "reference" is indicated, not "payload"

    Is there a video on exporting Maya/Arnold lights to USD?

  • @IyadHorani3D
    @IyadHorani3D 2 года назад +1

    Thanks for that, I've been desperately trying to find a proper workflow to export, import USD. I do have a question that I still cannot find an answer to. How do you export a USD with Arnold shading network and have it render in USD. Also how can I overwrite or make changes to an Arnold material in a USD stage?

    • @IyadHorani3D
      @IyadHorani3D 2 года назад

      I've also been struggling to have SubDs be imported when importing a USD model. I tried exporting from the display and from Arnold. The only time that it did work somewhat was when activating it in Arnold tab and exporting an Arnold USD instead of the regular one. I say almost because the model had more subDs but it wasn't SubD at rendertime.

      In regards to shaders, check out the beginning of this tutorial: ruclips.net/video/HfQd4WX0Trw/видео.html
      For other USD specific questions, I recommend taking them to the developer forum: github.com/Autodesk/maya-usd/discussions
      They'll be able to answer your questions way better than I ever could!

    How do you create variants for a prim. I've been looking, but beyond editing the USD manually, I've found nothing. Is it just not part of the Maya UI yet?

    • @Autodesk_Maya

      Unfortunately it's not in the UI yet! But USD is an area of development focus right now so keep your eyes out for future developments.

    I saved the USD objects to see Arnold materials but I can't get the colors to show in viewport 2.0 like you have. However the colors do render in arnold.

    • @Autodesk_Maya
      @Autodesk_Maya  Год назад

      You'll need to use the Arnold preview mode to see some more complex graphs in the Viewport. See this video: ruclips.net/video/d27RJklI1tE/видео.html

    • @JPWestmas
      @JPWestmas Год назад

      @@Autodesk_Maya That video doesn't show where the Arnold preview mode is (Oh you mean preview in software? That's no good). At 8:00 and 12:00 Matt just shows that you can render the arnold materials in the Arnold software renderer. I already exported my Arnold materials with my USD, just need to view their Base Color in VP2.0 without having to create Base Colors all over again for Opengl. I have dozens of materials with just base colors applied for color coding reasons.

    what are the benefits of using USD for solo artists who work and product short video alone ?

    • @Autodesk_Maya
      @Autodesk_Maya  2 года назад +1

      If you're working alone, there's honestly not a ton of benefit to working in USD - it's designed more for productions that involve a lot of moving parts and people. That said, it would still benefit you as an individual to become comfortable with the workflow in-case you ever need to do work for (either as an employee or contractor) a larger studio that uses it.

      I think there are a lot of benefits for a solo artist. For example: if you create a lot of home or office environments, you can create a book/binder etc. and then create USD sets with these objects arranged in different configurations to go on a shelf. You can then import this into a scene, pick the set you like and change the book/binder reference to a different model.
      Even for basic layout, previously I would import an object such as a flower pot into a living room. Group it first, add position/rotation transform to the grp. If I want to switch the flower pot to a vase, I would keyframe the transform grp, delete the flower pot inside the grp, bring in the vase, zero the grp transform, add vase to grp transform, scrub timeline so the grp transform clicks back to keyframed transform. With USD you can just change the link of the flower pot. But my initial method may be flawed. In any case I see a big benefit personally.

    Can you help me ? I always got an issue when referencing usd asset into the shot, for example I have an environment asset called "classroom.usd" which contains usd reference of multiple assets like "chairs.usd", "table.usd" etc, but when I created a "shot.usd" and try to reference the "classroom.usd", I got an error saying something like "# Warning: Unresolved reference path on prim @d:/Projects/usd/assets/envelem/usd/Shot.usd@,@anon:0000019496AECFF0:Shot-session.usda@. (recomposing stage on stage @d:/Projects/usd/assets/envelem/usd/Shot.usd@ )" , my test is based on Autodesk YT video called "Catch up with Maya: Out-of-this-world USD, animation, and modeling workflows" minutes 31:29 where the instructor seems doing the same thing but without any issue.

      Sounds like a default prim needs to be set in the referenced layer. From the devs: "If you use the Maya USD exporter, a default prim is always added. But if you create a layer using an other app (Solaris, Bifrost, Python, etc…) it is up to the user to set a default prim."
