I don't know what was going through the mind of John Williams when he wrote this song, but I imagine it as "the human condition" summed up. So much danger, uncertainty, fear, balanced with sheer human optimism and hope, the beauty of human creativity. All of humanity's good qualities weighed against the horror of it's bad qualities. Hope and wonder triumph in this song. Maybe they can in you, and in humanity as a whole...

Wonderful words and and an inspiring insight, but sadly two years on from your post I fear that the bad side of human qualities receive much more attention than the good, and it seems that the only way I can escape it, is to listen to such soul lifting music as this. If only the optimism and passion for good conveyed in his music became a reality. Promote the positive qualities and not dwell so much on the negatives.
I personally think the reason why this score won the Oscar in 1983 is because no living human being can listen to those last thirty seconds or so and not tear up.
it's funny because it occured to me watching it last night for the first time in 20 years that the main reason I like to eat Reese's Pieces at the movies instead of M&Ms is solely due to their appearance in E.T.
@@rowanmiller7062 Mars, the candy company, was asked to have M and Ms featured in the movie E.T. but they said no. However, when Hershey was asked they agreed to have Reese's Pieces featured in the film and this caused sales for the candy to skyrocket after the film's release.
I don't remember the brass instrument doing that weird thing at 3:18 and 3:25. I guess my mind decided that was too bad to remember correctly, paved over that and called it perfect.

I will always maintain that this is one of John Williams' most underrated scores. Truly beautiful, and one of my absolute favorites.

Two people have obviously never been over the moon, or danced all alone to this wonderful music on a bright, sunny morning.
E.T. is one of my favorite movies and I love watching it on DVD as well as when it's on TV. It is also my favorite ride at Universal Studios Florida!
