The legendary American composer John Williams’ movie soundtracks have earned countless prestigious awards, including five Oscars, five Emmys, four Golden Globes and twenty-five Grammys. As he thanked the audience at Vienna’s Musikverein for their welcome, however, he told them that the invitation to work with the Wiener Philharmoniker was “one of the greatest honours of my life”. This is the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra..They host the biggest conductors for the best part of the last century. Them doing Star Wars is probably John Williams dream come true, he said " the invitation to work with the Wiener Philharmoniker was one of the greatest honours of my life”.
@Europa Nostra lol....you can train all your life, and never even make it into the top 200 applicants for a seat to this orchestra...they are genius players , each of them. they're in the city of Vienna , Mozart's world. imagine being in a cinema in 1977 and hearing this masterpiece for the first time omg
Yup I remember that afternoon in the summer of 77 as a 7 year old. Our sleepaway camp took us on a field-trip to see the movie. Sitting in the dark theater and hearing the first note blast thru the theater as the Star Wars logo appeared on the screen and we knew we were in for something special. Even with the sequels which I saw in the theater but don't hold a fondness for hearing the first note and seeing the logo still gives me goosebumps and takes me back to that summer in 1977.
Saw it on release at Starlight drive inn and it was sooo beyond belief, truly magical and mind blowing at the same time back then.

Another film that came out the following year that gave me that same feel during the opening credits was Superman. I remember seeing the remake in 2006 and they used the same original opening score and even though the remake was not nearly as good as the 1978 original even at age 36 I still got goosebumps as the first notes of John Williams score played.
The Superman score and the Star Wars score are still two of Johns best.

I was seven years old when my dad took me to see this in the movie theater. To a little kid, that movie blew my little mind. I was no longer on earth, I was out on missions in the universe. It wasn't going to school on the bus, it was a mission to save Alderan. It wasn't going to get groceries with mom, we were going to save the princess from the space station. We weren't at the beach, we were on Tatooine searching for Droids! No book or movie changed my view of self or literature like Starwars. That day in 1977 was created a life long Sci-Fy fan!
Keep flying and stay Shiny
I was 7 or 8, cannot remember what day we saw it, but about the same. Swings on the play ground were Xwings.

Hans and Ramin? I mean . . . maybe? But no.

Culmination of a live's work? XD Dude, he plays in the Wiener Philharmoniker... Most possibly the culmination of his life's work would have been playing some Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler or Richard Strauss at the Salzburg Festival under some great conductor. Here he is just having one of the best times of his life.
Everyone: "I love you."
John: "I know."
Underrated comment
Haha! Love it. Han and Leia everyone.
This is an example of why music education is so important in our schools and in our communities. I mean, John Williams started taking piano lessons when he was a kid, and also learned brass instruments. Along the way, he studied arranging and composing. He then began working as a pianist, arranger and composer. All through that time, he had teachers.
Then you take the musicians in the orchestra. They all started on their instruments with a teacher. When you hear people like this perform, you're listening to a combined hundreds of thousands of hours spent practicing. You're also listening to (probably) a combined hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on lessons and higher education. You're also looking at well over a million dollars' worth of instruments and instrument insurance.
My point is, that without music education, music teachers and the strive to become as good as you can be, concerts like this would not happen. It's this wondrous composer and these stunningly good musicians and their teachers who make it happen.
Where I am, the minister of education has decimated arts for STEM. Unfortunately not everyone is cut out to be an engineer. There are those that are cut out to be musicians, artists and story tellers. I'm an engineer, but I have this stuck on my wall at work: "If we were a medical school, and you were here as a med student practicing appendectomies, you'd take your work very seriously because you would imagine that some night at 2 AM someone is going to waltz into your emergency room and you're going to have to save their lives. Well, my friends, someone at 8 PM is going to walk into your concert hall and bring you a mind that is confused, a heart that is overwhelmed, a soul that is weary. Whether they go out whole again will depend on how well you do your craft". Every once in a while I 'catch' someone staring at the text. I think they are the people walking into the concert hall.

This is the best rendition of this song I've heard. The Vienna Philharmonic really knocked it out of the park.
It is mid-summer 1977. We have heard so much about this movie from family and friends that we decided it's OK to take our oldest son, who was five, to see this movie. Our other son was just two at this time and much too young.
Thru our credit union at work my wife got reserved tickets so we would not have to wait in those looooong lines. As such when the theater opened we who had reserved tickets were allowed in 10 minutes before everyone else. So we got our popcorn, soda, and candy first, then we were escorted to the reserved seating area in the center of the theater with other families.
With our son sitting between us, the rolling script comes on and I read it to him. I can see he is transfixed, staring at the screen.
From that point on until the end of the movie some two hours later his eyes never left the screen. He hardly ate any popcorn or drank his soda!
Usually when we would take him to a movie, while it's playing he would ask us questions about what's going on.
Not this time. Other than a yip, or a laugh, or some other reaction, his eyes never left the screen!
When it was over, the people screamed and applauded with joy at what we had just seen.
IT WAS AMAZING!!!
Now I have all the Star Wars movies on DVD and VHS. Full packages all.
But there is nothing like when I saw that first Star Wars movie with our son so many years ago!
To be honest, the lines and the wait only fuled the antcipation.
I had a similar reaction to watching Superman - the movie in 1978 in my local cinema. The audience was nearly all "grown-ups" but we were all like kids in the Saturday morning kids cinema. When Superman caught Lois Lane with one hand and the helicopter in the other and the people down below on the street all cheered - so did we in the cinema. It was areal life enhancing experience. The very next day I was ordering the soundtrack records in my local music shop. I have them today and treasure them still a life enhancing experience thanks to Maestro Williams
There’s always something special about seeing composers conduct their own pieces

As a musician, I get the feels no matter what. But this performance had some extra something special. The force was with them all, for sure. Bravi tutti.
When you think of which composers/conductors had stood in this exact spot to now be his turn, I am sure Mr. Williams felt honoured immensely himself and so we come full circle in a beautiful way.

John Williams probably knows every note by heart. Does not need to reference the sheet music. He wrote the music.
Any director worth his salt will know every note by heart of any piece he/she is conducting, whether he is the author or not; that is their job, as any theatre actor who needs to know every word of the play he is acting in.

I was a (not very good) Horn player in HS when the first Star Wars came out. That music hit me like no other had up to that point, and inspired me to actually practice so I could be able to play it. As I've ended up being a HS/JHS Band director and played in several very good regional orchestras (playing JW's music umpteen times, still gives me goosebumps after 40+ years), it's not very much of a stretch to say that Mr. William's music literally changed my life.
oh! Horn section is superb!
Yes, the famous Viennese horns in F. They sound great in Wagner too!
What I like about his scores, whether it's Star wars, Raiders, Superman, ET, etc, he prepares the audience, and it tells the story. Pure musical genius!
It's a holdover from the traditional grand opera. Each main character gets their own theme and "upcoming arias" are hinted at in the overture. You basically compose backwards: first the final theme, then use fragments earlier (nowadays we might call it foreshadowing). There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. John Williams is always open about his writing techniques. His ability to write complex dovetailing phrases and melody lines (counterpoint), while maintaining everything accessible, is absolutely sublime. Definitely my favorite film composer.
How does he keep coming up with masterpieces ?!
Honestly think I’d sob if I ever got to hear this live!
I do now, even though it isn't 'live'.
Can we just take a moment to acknowledge every single one of these instrumentalists?! Bravo 👏 to each and every single one of you!!! Do you have any idea how hard it is to learn a piece such as this? And NOT A SINGLE MISTAKE HEARD!! Again I say BRAVO 👏
I'm a musician. The amount of experience, study and tradition you see on that scenario is incalculable.. It spans centuries now.
Listening to this music makes me want to watch all the films once again, even if i have already saw them like 15 times.
This is how powerful John Williams is.
My Family has probably watched the movies hundreds of times, enjoyed it every time, and I absolutely agree, just listening to the theme makes me want to watch them all over again

I don't use the word Genius to describe many people but I will for John Williams , the man is an absolute Genius end of story.
This is not "pops". It is legitimate concert level music. Far better than any of the contemporary pieces that start orchestral concerts nowadays.
Classical musicians tend to be really smart people. Really smart people tend to like science fiction and fantasy movies and probably grew up watching them. Something like this is a perfect match.
Can't believe I'm crying over this
You’re not the only one

The power of music is real.
Because it’s fantastic!!
When people come together great things can be achieved. Orchestra is a beautiful example.
My God his music elevates the human spirit to the Stars!!! ❤❤❤
and every single person in the orchestra is beaming because they LIVED this music their entire lives. fantastic!
A few seconds more and I was appearing in this video, as I can clearly see myself in the public at this moment on the blu-ray! 😄 Such a wonderful time it was, I was a kid again, with stars in the eyes, during the whole concert. It was an old dream of mine to see the maestro conduct his own music live. The Wiener Philharmoniker made it come true. I will cherish this memory all my life! Herzlichen Dank für diese großartige Konzert! Grüße aus Frankreich! ❤
Forget that this a Soundtrack to an iconic, legendary piece of movie history, this is my most favourite piece of classical music of all time.
John Williams can be placed up there with Bach, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, Vivaldi, to name but a few, and all the other greatest classical composers of all time. All his works are iconic; legendary; powerful, and he will be remembered as one of the most prolific musical creators of all time.
Hi 👋
Every one of John Williams' film themes is a perfect little pocket symphony.
Movie music always looks back to Wagner, leitmofivs for every character or romance, every situation. In classic/romantic era you don't have this repetitions in the music like we do now - but that is needed to set the tone, the scene. Another beautiful example of this is the LOTR score.
@@DjTonioRoffo Not a big fan of the LOTR movies but the score is phenomenal. the Fellowship theme in particular is just amazing, easily as good as any of Williams' themes
Happy 90th Birthday Mr. Williams! What a great work you've done through the years, every each score is a masterpiece, history of music and cinema.
Just to see this on RUclips is an honour. Sir John Williams, we stand and salute you! And 'Bravo!' to the orchestra.
Had an opportunity to perform a concert of his music with him conducting some years ago. He’s a nice person , and his music is very challenging.
Smiles all around, a standing ovation ... this track is a masterpiece in every way. Amazin orchestra, amazing composer and conductor, amazing piece of music.
It could be argued that Mr Williams shaped the Star Wars universe as much as Mr Lucas did.
There are few great masters of the romantic style like Williams alive today. He is from a different era when people didn't look at phones, had fewer distractions and could go through real training and build great skills. Wish he would never go away!
He should compose an MCU movie
Williams' expertise is scoring encompasses a much wider range than the neo-romantic style.
I must say, I find this recording really charming. It shows that professional musicians sometimes fall into the same pits as amateur musicians do (at least we did, when we played Star Wars). Hence the maestro’s alarmed look at the trumpets (0:24-0:27) who lost tempo at 0:21 by dwelling on the high note for too long… ;-)
im glad im not the only one who noticed this!
Now that you mention it, you're totally right! I didn't catch it the first time around because I was too busy grinning! 😂🤣🤦🏿♂️ I guess they were excited as well, as they should be, haha!
A good bit of phasing going on in general.
Awesome 👌
The trumpets are directly in front of him, John is looking off to his left toward the timpanist who ever so slightly rushed.
The finest musicians in the world all smiling like schoolkids playing arguably 1 of the most recognisable tracks by IMO the greatest living composer. What a buzz that must have been to see this live.
Hi 👋
What will we do when he passes away? His music is the background of our lives.
