My great grandparents lived in the mountains north of Genoa and I'm told they used to WALK all the way down to the Po River valley for seasonal work harvesting rice. Imagine going from such heights to such flat terrain. Once back home, they would hire itinerant workers to help them with their wheat harvest!
This is interesting. I can't really associate a European country with rice, but of course the rice looks different from us in Asia. Is it only exist in Italy in Europe? And what is the origin of rice cultivation in Italy?
i dont know about other countryes, but in north of italy it is as common as pasta and the same is for spain, especialy catalunya and valencia region. I actualy did not know asians eat rice untill i was a teenager.
I think they are very similar to Northeastern Asian rice growing in Northern China, Korea or Japan. Northen Italy also has quite colder climate than Southern Asia. So I think Indica rice could not be an option for them.
Rice originated from Asia, and that made rice more popular among Asian nations. Rice then spread through Europe, and later on into the American continent...It is theorized that rice was first introduced to Europe through Alexander journeys into Asia around 320 B.C. Much later, during the 8th century A.D., the Arabs brought rice into Europe through the Iberian Peninsula.
best rice in the world was grown in colonial South Carolina USA , they are trying to bring it back. Most growers are round the Mississippi river states
Disappointed with Malaysian government policy toward agriculture industry especially during 22 years under tun mahathir who try and changed Malaysia into manufacturer industrial nation and now we as a rice eating people can't produce enough rice for our own use.much depends on imported rice to meet demand.
You can't compare them, they don't taste the same at all. Italian rice is very heavy and more expensive because there's less of it compared to other rice.

Surprised to know that rice is cultivated in Italy. - Bharathi from Tamil Nadu, India
Italy is the biggest producer of rice in Europe thanks to the Po Valley 😊

Great.l particularly like that it's not GMO.
is there a bit of sarcasm in there maybe? 😉
Epic north italians, another reason why they are richer than south italy (kidding)
Yeah maybe, but the south has better food and less snobby people. 👌
