My Super Tenere Won't Downshift!

  • On a recent trip I noticed the Super Tenere wasn't downshifting from a moving stop very well. Starting off in 2nd or 3rd gear is a real pain! My worst fear was transmission damage or a recall, but I found out this is a common problem on all year Teneres.
    The fix is lubricating the shifter bolt. Easy!

    Yep common issue with the S10. Get in the habit of greasing it every winter as off season maintenance and you'll never have a problem with it.

      thanks! I wish I had known that before. It sure created some anxious moments as I've never heard of a Japanese motorcycle needing that type of maintenance. My old VFR had over 100,000 miles with nothing like that ever happening.

    FYI all Super Tenere owners. I have a 2013 with less than 4,000 miles. After seeing this, and without having experienced any downshifting problems, I pulled the bolt. While it had blue thread locker on it, there wasn't the first sign of any lubricant ever having been applied. It has now! So thank you AdventureswithME!

    Great video. I just bought a '16 and I've already had 2 or 3 times when I couldn't down shift. I'm going to proactively check for adequate grease. Thank you for sharing this and please keep the videos coming...they are great.

      thanks Stephen, it's a challenge at times to come up with new material, but I am shooting to release a new video every week.
      I had read online that sometimes there is zero lube on the shifter bolt from the factory, so if you've already experienced this it might be good to check.

      Your doing a great job. I for one would highly value seeing more standard service tutorials on the Tenere in addition to your blogs. Standard Service Items like oil, air filter, spark plugs, shaft drive, lubrication service points, spokes, and other items that are specifically listed in the Tenere service manual maintenance schedule. My dealer leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to basic service and I plan to perform basic service myself. Detailed service videos listing part numbers and showing step by step as well as any best practices would be a must watch for me and I'm betting countless others who own this great bike. Thanks for any videos you decide to share with us going forward!

    Thank you so much! I was riding mine home from work yesterday and was having so much trouble when downshifting approaching stoplights. I bet this is the problem! Same exact symptom.

    Thanks so much for posting this! Ive put 2500 km on my new to me 2016 (total 14000km). This was my shakedown run for a 10000km plus trip coming up in a week and the damn thing wouldnt downshift on the way home!! I thought I was going to have to take my old 07 high mile DL650 on my trip (which would be a huge scramble to get ready in time). This fixed it. Zero grease from the factory....

    Note to all Super Tenere owners . As noted in the comments below, my 2013 Super Tenere had not shown the problem Brian experienced but I serviced it anyway and road it until it had 11,400 miles then sold it. I never had the first problem with it. I then bought a 2015 Super Tenere (with cruise control

    I've been experiencing similar downshifting issues on my brand new '16. I took out the bolt and it actually had no visible grease on it at all! Applied some grease and it shifts beautifully! Probably something that has been missed during final assembly.

    Just has my 2012 do this to me yesterday. A friend who is a motorcycle mechanic mentioned shecking the shift linkage, I was thinking just a thicker oil .
    This makes sense.
    I will offer you this though, just a dab of thread locker will do ya, we had a guy working with us who would drench drill head bolts with blue loctite, a torch was needed to take them out. You just want to stop them from backing out.
    Good video, well put together and easy explanation for those who really never do any wrenching.,
    I will say this, if people need a low priced high quality tool kit, get Benchmade. I have wrenched like crazy with my kit which was given to me way back in 2000. Absolutely wonderful quality at a price anyone can afford.
    If you are in a pinch and rarely do anything, then a pitsburg kit at harbor freight will do ya for the occasional bolt.

      @@AdventuresWithMe00 poor grammar on my part, I apologise, it is part dyslexia and part my computer cannot keep up with my typing.
      (Used to be a piano player so 80wpm)
      Not sure if you fixed it but it turns out down shift problem is do to simply needing the bolt coming out of the bike lubed.
      I am sorry, I cannot think of the correct name.
      So take off your shifter, clean it , lube it and you should be good. :)

    Mine did the same on my first cross country trip. WD-40 was enough to get me home. I believe the manual actually says to lube that at every oil change.

    You should do the same to the brake pedal and foot pegs. They all get "dry". Thanks for sharing.

      good idea! I've heard that about the brake pedal. I think it's weird that I have not experienced that on any other Japanese bike I've owned.

      AdventureswithMe Yep. I've only had japanese bikes and this is the first that get quickly dried out on the pegs. Btw the brake pedal is a bit difficult cause we have to deal with the spring and the retainer clip ( don't know if it's the correct name) on the inside, but still a 5 min job.

    I put a quick shifter on my 2019 Yamaha tracer and after about 100 miles of use I started having difficulty downshifting. At first I though the issue had something to do with the quick shifter install. The bike only had 1100 miles on it so I couldn’t imagine it being anything else. Sure enough, after operating the shifter by hand it was obvious it was sticking when downshifting. Mine had the Allen head bolt on the inside of the peg and I used a soldering torch for about a minute or two to heat and loosen the blue lock tight. Mine only had one of those thin washers on the inside of the shifter but none on the outside where yours has 2. I wonder if Yamaha neglected to put washers there from the factory. Sure enough, it had no grease inside and once I greased it, it worked perfectly. I really like the bike otherwise. Thank you for the this video. It was a huge help..

      I'm glad it helped. Oddly, I haven't had to relube the shifter since I made this video and that was several years ago. It makes me wonder if it's something that is neglected at the factory and just needs to be done once?

    Just started having this same issue pulling into big bear for the usual mtn ride. Was playing in the snow a few days ago, hoping this is the issue on my 13. Ill tear into it when back and keep fingers crossed.
    Yep.... Dry as a bone.... Fixed it n good as new.... Thx for the vid and tips! Was sweating it was trans issues when it 1st cropped up.

    Thanks for this info as the Tenere is my first pick for next bike. Taking outer primary all apart on my SG now to troubleshoot a “grinding/humming noise I’m getting. 😔 oh well, such is the bike life! 😉

    Buddy of mine had the same problem with his '15 which only had a couple of thousand miles on it at the time. Seems as if the factory didn't even grease his when built. Was bone dry when he removed the bolt. My '16 was fine though when I checked it. I've seen a lot of this problem pop up on the 2 S10 groups I belong to.

      thanks, I had no idea it was an issue. My bike only has 11,000 miles on it so I suspect mine didn't have any lubrication on the bolt either.

      Mine is a '16 and was completely dry with no signs of being factory greased. Some guy at the S10 forum pointed this "issue" and I'm glad I checked it out.

    Only extra thing I’d do is clean out the gear lever slot, you might have done that off camera anyway. It works fine so must be good

    Good information. Ray's cycle is one of the best mechanic / service shops out there! I've been really contiplating a Tenere but having a hard time parting with my KLR. Do you ever miss the KLR you had or is the Tenere that good? I enjoy your videos

      Yes, I've been very happy dealing with Ray's!
      I appreciate the simplicity of the KLR John but feel like the Tenere is a superior bike. Upfront, I didn't ride the KLR on single track trails or through the woods. I kept it on public dirt roads or decent Class IV roads. I feel like the Tenere does just as well on those. Yeah, it's a lot heavier but the traction control gives a lot of confidence. When you throw in the ability to ride it like a sport touring bike or a tourer, it's Tenere for the win. No regrets.

    Install a zerk on the lever and give it a shot of grease every time you do an oil change.

      About 12,000 miles. A year later it's feeling a little notchy and I may have to grease it again.

    The peace of mind a Yamaha Extended Service warranty would have given you is illustrated here. Now imagine had this or another problem occurred 800 miles from home on a trip. Some repairs would easily exceed the total cost of the Y.E.S.. Recalls do not cost the owner money. The Y.E.S. is also a great resale tool should you decide to sell your bike while you are still covered. It’s transferable. If you are in your original warranty period you can still buy it from any Yamaha dealer. Yes, I sell Yamaha motorcycles!

      That's definitely just as good of an opinion. With this issue it did really act up several hundred miles from home, but it was certainly manageable to get back on the highway and get home without incident.
      I just don't find Yamaha's to be problematic enough to make the warranty worthwhile.

      hey - yu may be the one that knows -- I have a 2015 XT1200 with 6000 miles on it -- hangs up in 3rd mostly - but 4th - 5th sometimes -- wont allow me to shift higher or lower - have to play with clutch and shifter to get it to function - got worse over a thousand miles - lubing and checking shifter by a certified mechanic made shifting worse - gears feel loose at time - and tight at times - and scratchy at times -- any ideas ? he said it didnt look bent or whatever - warranty has 20 days left ! odd stuff ?

    I’m in need of someone’s idea or opinion on my bike. Well I got a bike for a kinda good deal because it starts and runs but the only problem is it doesn’t downshift(only while stopped)the shift lever is at 90 degrees. The bike is a 2006 Kawasaki ninja 500r. If someone can help it would be great.

      Hello Sergio,I have a ninja 250 and I have the same situation,but I check out other bike and the same, can't downshift also,I think is the way they are,not sure.

      I'm not sure I really understand the problem. The gear shift lever should be parallel to the road or 90 degrees from your leg. The bike doesn't downshift in any gear, at any speed?

      AdventureswithMe the only way I can downshift is at a stopped point with the engine off and by rocking the bike back and forth while constantly pushing down on the shift lever to get it in neutral

      AdventureswithMe and I can downshift from 2 but anything above that I have to turn it off, rock it, and keep trying to downshift
