Great points about the GoPro promotional videos. They shoot in perfect light in every location, select the best few seconds of each shot, use tripods, stabilizers, professional drones and other high end production equipment to achieve shots that captivate. Oh and they have the best athletes in the world to perform on camera! Once they color grade the footage it looks epic. No normal person will be able to reproduce that, but we can still shoot some great stuff and edit out the bad stuff! Great vid with good info! Thanks for posting it up.
I strongly prefer viewing 60fps over 30fps. It's just so much smoother and fluid. Plus if you do slow anything down by 1/2, that will still be 30fps and will still render nicely. One thing I didn't hear you discuss is the importance of slowing or speeding up by doubling or halving. If you try to slow something down by some odd number. For example, if the original clip is 120fps, that can be slowed down by 1/4 because 1/4 of 120 is 30 fps. You can't slow 120 down by 1/3, because that will result in 40fps. When the software tries to make 40 fps into 30fps (or 60fps), it won't look right. What it can do is produce a 60fps (or 30fps) video from clips of 30, 60, 120, and/or 240fps. For 30fps, it will just hold each frame twice as long. For 120 fps, it will use every other frame. For 240fps, it will use every 4th frame to render.
+EreksonJ This is all true. I just wanted to talk about some basics in the video, but you are spot on with your comment about frame rates and slowing them down and such.
What a brilliant "work in progress" you are. Come a long way from those early shed vids. Enjoyed every bit, motivated to try a comparison of different settings. Your on point for honesty. Cheers from the Middle of Australia
On the face mount if you have the Go PRO Hero 4 Black with the additional LCD screen, the GoPro ends up at a bad pointing very down angle because of the thickness. Make sure it's thin (remove LCD screen) or you have an extension to push it further out to angle it better.
One thing I noticed is the video quality drops substantially when using 1080p 120 fps. This happens for two reasons. The first is because the processor can only handle a set amount of data per second (bit rate). When splitting one second into 120 frames, each frame gets a smaller slice of the available bit rate. The second reason is since the digital shutter speed is 4x normal, the go pro has to bump up the light sensitivity (ISO) in order to keep the video at the correct brightness. This further reduces each frames image sharpness. If you are in very bright light you will notice this less. Hope this helps.
Very valuable video! I wish it was created a long time ago.. :/ We had to go throught the hard way of finding out what to use and how to you use it while dealing with gopro.. :)
Good Info on the GoPro. The guy on the trail was thinking get off my trail! I do not meet may hikers/bicyclers that like motorcycles on the trail... I say this trail is made for all of us.
+Dirt Rider My registration fee's keep that trail open. I pay to use the trail when I register my bike. I volunteer my time to keep that trail open. I'm not sure he's doing those things. My response is "it's a motorcycle trail, but you hikers are welcome too" :)
I think the under the visor mounting is ok if you have a helmet like a airoh aviator 2.1 which I have and have mounted my go pro under the visor, the reason why it works so good without catching wind is the aviator 2.1 has very vented peak so doesn't get dragged upwards
+offroaddutch Ok, I've never used one of those. My helmets can feel like they are getting ripped of my head when the visor is up like that. Good to know.
+Dirt Bike Channel yes I know the feeling, I had a fox v3 helmet befor and that use to drag my head back, but since I've had this airoh aviator 2.1 it's got a very vented peak and it doesn't happen
Great video. Just got a GoPro and these tips will be really helpful. Also I appreciate the reality check at the end. Keep up the great videos. I started following you back before you renamed yourself to your current name.
do you have a video on the settings you use for the sony fdr-x3000? just started using it I dont know what I have the iso set at but I'm using the XAVCS HD codec, 1080p 30fps 50mb/s and I have it on vivid not natural. So far I like the results but if you have any tips thatd be great!
Another great video Kyle! Just curious what software do you use to edit your footage? I just purchased my proshot mount and GoPro Hero4 Silver camera. Very informative video with some great baseline settings to start filming with! Keep up the good work!
I have 24TB of mediocre photos and video -- so thank you for your comment at the end that allows for the fact that most of the fabulous footage is done under optimum conditions and frequently uses editing skills! Unfortunately, I fall down too much to mount my camera on the side or chin of my helmet so just have one on top. I am trying to add another camera to my handlebars, but even with the Hero 7 stabilization -- too much bounce ... in fact broke off yesterday on the trail. (your footage looks like my Colorado stomping grounds :)
+tombba Uuummm.... It's going to be a while before I will have had enough time on them to give you a full review. Send me an email to kyle@dirtbikechannel.com and I'll elaborate for you privately.
+rwalden1999 As long as you don't lose suction. I would worry about the bouncing around. I think helmet mounted would be better because it is isolated from the bumps more than the bike. Not to mention that you can turn your head and show other things too. Being able to do that is huge for me.
+Frank B Yeah, but I don't see a reason to run a mouth vent unless you are racing. I mean, if you need to run that hydration system, that means you don't have time to stop for a drink. Then... if you are racing, I don't see a ton of reason for filming it.... and then you can just move the camera to the side of your helmet. No a big deal.
Do you use a plastic shine or polish? I use maxima sc1 after my bike is washed it makes the worn out plastics look brand new. It also helps to keep dirt from sticking to the bike.
+Bruce Copner You want me to reveal all my secrets? :) Shooting video (correctly) with an SLR might be a little above the scope of this audience... I'll have to think about that one.
Ha ha, fair enough. One of your early videos, Strawberry Ridge? Blew me away since I know how much work that is to do it solo. Anyway, great job and thank you for producing these videos.
Filmed in 1080 60fps and turns out my laptop could not play those vids smoothly. Used the gooro software to detune vids to 720 60fps and vids work now. Sticking with that format. 60 fps looks very fluid
+Dirt Bike Channel You should work out a promo code with these proshot guys so you get some sales commissions. "Use promo code: DBC2016 and get $5 off the proshot mount!" RUclips content creators work out all kinds of creative deals with vendors for stuff like that.
Hero 4 black. proshot. I use 720 60fps wide to super wide. Good enough on resolution, and fluid playback. 1080 60fps just never works out in editing, to much strobe effect. I also try and make the videos clips no longer that 10-15min, otherwise the file is too large and corrupts more often then not. I like making vids for youtube but It has to be simple, so I leave it on one setting and just take video and a few stills. Thanks for the how to video, good info.
+Jake Fairbanks No, I don't stabilize it. On bike GoPro footage is mostly garbage anyway, so there isn't much you can do to improve it. You just live with it.
I don't know if you'll know this or not but I got an asx action pro x camera and it looks exactly like a gopro and the mount looks the same but I haven't been able to compare it to a true gopro but I was wondering if a gopro mount would be compatible
I would like to advertise "Dirt Bike Channel" as a printed vinyl sticker on my dirt bike because I love this channel. Is there any way I can buy the sticker in the Dirt Bike Channel icon form much like the t-shirts on your website?
+Dirt Bike Channel I'm thinking of buying a brand new 2015 250exc and I've only ever ridden one two stroke which was a husky 125, do you think it would be worth buying a 2015 250exc or should i go a bit more money and buy a KTM 300 exc ( I'm 15 and 6'2 and not the skiniest bloke out there, so i'm looking for the right choice, thanks)
Great vid, I have a boat load of riding footage, but I haven't put much n youtube cause it al looks like crap. So this year, I'm going to put more effort learning how to better edit footage.
+singletrackfun34 That all depends on what I'm producing. A video like this one is simpler that some, and may only take me a a couple of hours in editing. Others can take me 10-20 hours of editing depending on the number of shots there are.

Alright so i really need some help i have 1999 Ktm 300exc really nice bike i dont want to get rid of it but i am having some trouble getting parts does anyone know what years of the ktm 300 i would have the same parts
Great info. GoPro ads are recorded using the camera's highest resolution and fps. RUclips also processes your video into a smaller file with less bit rate. If you upload a 4k video, it will be processed with a higher bit rate automatically for all resolution versions of that vid. +Jonathan Vaughan Everything you said is spot on.
Timely advice since I just bought a Hero 3+ and the Proshot mount. Noticed your creative shelves on the wall, too. Nice touch!
+osimnod I showed a picture of some shelves like these to my dad and he went ahead made them for me for Christmas. He's a good dad!
Just bought a 125sx and want to start motovlogging! Thanks for the awesome vid!
How is it going 😂

+Royce Nestor Thanks Royce. I have a lot of viewers from Australia, it' surprising to me.
Mate, I learned so many things from you in 10 minutes. Thanks for being so clear.
On the face mount if you have the Go PRO Hero 4 Black with the additional LCD screen, the GoPro ends up at a bad pointing very down angle because of the thickness. Make sure it's thin (remove LCD screen) or you have an extension to push it further out to angle it better.
+Opferman Motors Dirtbiking Correct. I don't use the LCD screens on mine.
I've wanted a video about filming or editing for sooo long time, thank you, i think this should improve my filming a lot!
+Suomalainen Finn! Glad to help out a little bit.
Those wall shelfs are excellent did you make them or can you buy them? Good video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
better explained than on any gopro vid. thanks mate
+GRANT CARLIN You are welcome.
Great timing for this video! Just got a gopro from my lady for Christmas. This breakdown helps a lot! Thanks!!
+tmac9938 Yeah, send me a private message if you have specific questions. kyle@dirtbikechannel.com
Thanks, very informative. The chin mount is the best angle for sure, too bad it's not really an option for most camera's other than GoPro
+BBQ Rider Yeah.
I was just thinking about some of my mounting positions the other day. Glad I saw the video. Still need to get out and ride together.
I have tried this method and it very helpful while riding dirt bike
Holy cow!! Love the tire shelves on the wall behind you!!! :)
man your videos are amazing, definitely my favourite channel, keep it up!

+aslattery This is true.
Yet another great video- very informative
Keep up the good work pal
Happy new year 👍🏻👍🏻
+Daniel Rogers Happy New Year to you too.
Great video! Thank you. Btw, very cool idea to cut up a dirt bike tire and wrap it around the shelves. Looks awesome
Very valuable video!
I wish it was created a long time ago.. :/
We had to go throught the hard way of finding out what to use and how to you use it while dealing with gopro.. :)
+Kauno Jawos Sometimes the school of hard knocks is the best one.

How do you carry and protect your SLR on the trail? I'd like to see a video about that and how you pack all of your cameras for a filming ride. Thanks
+Kevin Herndon I use a backpack designed for SLR cameras.
So true man. Very good topic. And man, you have the best videos. Keep it up and happy new year.
+TheFreeride725 Thank you for your support on the channel.
those tire shelves are dope man did you make those yourself? did u cut the tire in half and mount it up that way? very cool touch to the garage!!
hey kyle! i was wondering what exactly is that first go pro mount and where did you buy it? i am really interested in it.
I have the same question
I had the same question. Did not see any answers so after multiple rewinds and some google searches I found it. ProShot www.proshotcam.com/
What software do you prefer? Great vid. Thanks
I love your channel, im waiting for more tutorial movies like this :) Greetings from Poland :)
I think the under the visor mounting is ok if you have a helmet like a airoh aviator 2.1 which I have and have mounted my go pro under the visor, the reason why it works so good without catching wind is the aviator 2.1 has very vented peak so doesn't get dragged upwards

I prefer to mount my gopro under the super visor so when I turn my head it follows me! its pretty cool. side mount also pretty cool
verry nice dirtbike room!!! awesome!!
+Vincent C It's my favorite place now!
thanks for sharing your gopro tips, you make me buy a KTM, now i think you will make me buy my first gopro to records my rides!
Great video. Just got a GoPro and these tips will be really helpful. Also I appreciate the reality check at the end. Keep up the great videos. I started following you back before you renamed yourself to your current name.
+Nathan Powell Thanks for sticking with me Nathan! You are one of the old dawgs on the channel now.

I use FCPX.
Very good topic. I always see people asking these very questions.
Also, I love those tire shelves!
+Krawse Thanks. My dad made those for me for Christmas.
+Krawse the shelves are so cool!!
Those shelves are sick!
Love the tire shelfs did you make them or buy them
My Dad made them.

suction cup mount to front number plate is pretty good view
+rwalden1999 As long as you don't lose suction. I would worry about the bouncing around. I think helmet mounted would be better because it is isolated from the bumps more than the bike. Not to mention that you can turn your head and show other things too. Being able to do that is huge for me.
I like your rear view setup.
+Albert Tran Yeah, I need to put the rear view mounts on my new helmet.
Proshot is awesome unless you want to use a hydration system that uses the mouth vent.
I prefer 60fps in woods and such - because it is looking more clear. What do you use for editing your videos?
+Clutch Pumper Yeah, point of view footage can look better at 60 fps. Most other things just don't look very realistic at that frame rate IMO.
That's right. What software do you use?
You now a ton about this topic, and your channel!
+Bradyn Rides290 I know a little bit about photography and video. This was just a primer to help people understand some of the basics.
Do you use a plastic shine or polish? I use maxima sc1 after my bike is washed it makes the worn out plastics look brand new. It also helps to keep dirt from sticking to the bike.
+z skinner Sam (seen frequently on the channel) uses something like that. I don't, but I'm sure it would help.
Great video, I kept wanting to ask, but now you answeared all my questions.
+Obed M. Good stuff. If you have other questions, let me know and I'll put it on the pile of video topics to get to.
Thank you. Can you do a similar video on your DSLR settings?
+Bruce Copner You want me to reveal all my secrets? :) Shooting video (correctly) with an SLR might be a little above the scope of this audience... I'll have to think about that one.
Ha ha, fair enough. One of your early videos, Strawberry Ridge? Blew me away since I know how much work that is to do it solo. Anyway, great job and thank you for producing these videos.
+Bruce Copner Yeah those videos are a TON of work! I have to do them when I'm alone, because no one wants to sit around all day and set up shots.
Will you give me the link for the first mounting position mount, the one by the mouth!
+Bradyn Rides290 www.proshotcam.com/
Thanks for the video. I have been waiting for it.
+andres iturbide Glad to offer a little help.
Those shelves are rad 👌
Love the tire shelves how'd you make those?
+Caleb Newton My dad made them. Built a shelf frame with a half circle for the shelf top. Then cut a tire in half and installed it on the front.
+Dirt Bike Channel thanks!
Filmed in 1080 60fps and turns out my laptop could not play those vids smoothly. Used the gooro software to detune vids to 720 60fps and vids work now. Sticking with that format. 60 fps looks very fluid
+Albert Tran If that is the case, you might want to simply film in 720 on the camera.
Hey Kyle what GoPro editing software do you use?
+ Dirt Bike Channel can you provide a link to the pro shock camera mount that's on your helmet? thanks!
+Drew Bankert www.proshotcam.com/
+Dirt Bike Channel You should work out a promo code with these proshot guys so you get some sales commissions. "Use promo code: DBC2016 and get $5 off the proshot mount!" RUclips content creators work out all kinds of creative deals with vendors for stuff like that.
Awesome mate! all the way from Oz...
Hero 4 black. proshot. I use 720 60fps wide to super wide. Good enough on resolution, and fluid playback. 1080 60fps just never works out in editing, to much strobe effect. +eugrules Good tips.
Kyle, do you stabilize your footage at all? Is that done on FCPX?
+Jake Fairbanks No, I don't stabilize it. On bike GoPro footage is mostly garbage anyway, so there isn't much you can do to improve it. You just live with it.
Where do you buy the pro shock camera mount? Thanks.
I don't know if you'll know this or not but I got an asx action pro x camera and it looks exactly like a gopro and the mount looks the same but I haven't been able to compare it to a true gopro but I was wondering if a gopro mount would be compatible
+trials_bike2000 Sorry, I don't have any experience with that camera.
I would like to advertise "Dirt Bike Channel" as a printed vinyl sticker on my dirt bike because I love this channel. Is there any way I can buy the sticker in the Dirt Bike Channel icon form much like the t-shirts on your website?
+Cameron Boswell I will be selling some t shirts soon at dirtbikechannel.com. Not sure on the stickers yet. Stay tuned.
Hey Kyle just wondering, what year model are the KTM 250 EXC's that you ride?
In the last year, I've been riding a 2015 300 XC.
+Dirt Bike Channel I'm thinking of buying a brand new 2015 250exc and I've only ever ridden one two stroke which was a husky 125, do you think it would be worth buying a 2015 250exc or should i go a bit more money and buy a KTM 300 exc ( I'm 15 and 6'2 and not the skiniest bloke out there, so i'm looking for the right choice, thanks)
can u make a totorial to connect gopro hero3 to a device
Have you used or heard anything about the gopro session camera?
Is it difficult to get the videos off the GoPro into the editing software on the computer?
Where did you get the tires on the background?!??
+eric garcia My dad made them for me for Christmas. They are used tires cut in half.
Cool idea!!
perfect work!!!!!!!!!
can you do like a review of your show room type thing I would like that and I am sure many others would to
+Bailey Manning I'll put that on the video topic list.
yea
Hi I have a Yamaha ag100 2 stroke is it a good bike or any tips cheers
What is a good cheap/free editing software for a guy just diving into the Gopro world?
+Brandon Markus On mac it would be iMovie. Not sure what to recommend on Windows.
Can't find the noir he is using for the front of his helmet pls help!!
What editing software is best, is iMovie ok?
What editing software do you have
+Hondamx86 FCPX.
Great vid, I have a boat load of riding footage, but I haven't put much n youtube cause it al looks like crap. So this year, I'm going to put more effort learning how to better edit footage.
+Dirt Bike Channel thanks! I was googling "pro shock" not "pro shot"!
+Drew Bankert Yes, ProShot camera mount.
what protection mods do u use for your dirt bikes?
+maniac & CO I think I'll put this in the pile of upcoming video topics.
How do you capture your voice?
How do you safely pack your SLR on rides?
+cdb0187 I have a backpack made for and SLR. I show it on the video when I'm talking about what to bring on rides.
What video editing software are you using?
+Robert Moore FCPX
+Dirt Bike Channel thanks!
That guy was thinking "Maybe I should get a motorcycle?"
Where did u get those tire shelves
+Toxic Titan00 My dad made them for me for Christmas out of old tires.
+Dirt Bike Channel that's awesome
where can i get that shock mount from?
+SPARTO www.proshotcam.com/
thank you for the link. Plus your video are great.
About how long does it take to edit one of your vids?
+singletrackfun34 That all depends on what I'm producing. A video like this one is simpler that some, and may only take me a a couple of hours in editing. Others can take me 10-20 hours of editing depending on the number of shots there are.
WOW! I need to thank my friend again for making the vids of us riding! I knew it took some time ..he was just to gracious to say. Happy new year!
+singletrackfun34 It's all the little things that really take time. Sure, you can slap something together in 15-30 minutes, but when you start color correcting, sound checking, and really making sure you have the clips in the right position, it really eats up the time.
What SD card do you recommend
+IC Rides Anything with a faster transfer rate. Look for a "10 Class" card, or something that is 45 mbs or better.
Alright so i really need some help i have 1999 Ktm 300exc really nice bike i dont want to get rid of it but i am having some trouble getting parts does anyone know what years of the ktm 300 i would have the same parts
Google search that same question

Great info. GoPro ads are recorded using the camera's highest resolution and fps. RUclips also processes your video into a smaller file with less bit rate. If you upload a 4k video, it will be processed with a higher bit rate automatically for all resolution versions of that vid. 6:02 LOL... that guy
AMA doesn’t allow helmet cams
the magic number is 60fps
6:05 lol
+Albert Tran He sure looks deep in thought.
i use a goggle that has a high definition camera (1080 p)and mic built into the goggle about 2 cm above the eyes on the outside.the company has been around before the go pro.its called liquid image.i think that it has better video footage than the go pro and not nearly as expensive.check them out! just an fyi.
+sleathers1551 Interesting. But then I can't adjust the viewing angle (up or down) or take it off the bike. Pretty cool though. What about batteries?
+Dirt Bike Channel. has a replaceable battery and can install up to a 64 gig memory card
Just use a sony action cam there much better and cost less
fyi your microphone is hissing really bad this whole video
