I rode one at a demo event yesterday at the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park. First time that active suspension lowered with the flip of the ignition, I knew I was on something unique and special. Then, the ride was amazing. The suspension was comfortable and competent. The brakes were next level and the power of that new Revolution Max engine exceeded my expectations. Power for days and a great sound. For a first effort in a field it normally doesn't play in, Harley really knocked it out of the park with this Pan America.

    Thank you Matt!
I'm a visual learner, and you've done a great job of explaining the functions. Another area of your style, as I'm watching the video is that you take an approach that helps long time Harley riders understand the different aspects of the Pan America Special's tech, like the difference between the cruiser Infotainment system, GPS, and comms. I much prefer the Pan America’s display to my Ultra Classic’s infotainment system. For many reasons. I’d reverse the score you gave to the units. Just different lines of thought and use. I might mount my Garmin Montana 700i.
My Pan America Special is being prepped up here at Redwoods H-D and I think we're going to put it in the display so people can come by and see it for a week. Then I'm gonna put a bazillion miles on the bad boy!
Thanks again for all you do. Your a big part of why I'm on a 17-Ultra Classic , and a 21-Pan America Special.

Many things to like about this machine. I have a 2018 BMW 1200GS. One thing about the Beemer that I like over the Pan Am is the control on the left handle bar for menu options. On the BMW it is a wheel that you turn and press in for use. Much easier to use and navigate all the menu options. I've only seen it on BMW motorcycles.
However, for the first attempt by Harley this is an excellent motorcycle.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. There has got to be an option to run power to the handle bar area to charge phone or 3rd party GPS but pleased they have outlets from the factory for Gerbing heated gear. Just wanted to add about the Ride Planner app from my experience.
It is a great way to plan a route before hand using a laptop or pc. Try to make it as simple as possible when planning out using the least amount of waypoints. Keep the file size down to a minimum. Break up a route if necessary into separate files (ex: LA_Sac_1, Sac_Tahoe_2, Tahoe_Vegas_3, Vegas_LA_4) and a large part of that depends on waypoints. It's just something to experiment with before you try on a multiday adventure. If you set a waypoint and don't actually meet it, the app will reroute you based upon the most fastest way to reach your destination. For example, you spend time planning a route through the twisties from LA to San Diego but miss a waypoint you set before the twisties. It will most likely reroute you using the interstates. If you miss a waypoint and it keeps yelling at you to U-turn to go back to it, then you decide to use the "skip waypoint" option, it will most likely reroute you using the interstates or even roads that are pot hole dirt gravel roads that it determines to get you to your destination quicker.
I think the Harley Ride App will continue to operate or hold the planned route (or even unplanned route if just viewing the map as you ride) you set even when you run out of cell phone signal service and relies on the GPS function within the phone (totally separate technologies from what "experts" have informed me) The GPS satellites lock onto a "beacon" baked within your phones motherboard and is how it can track the exact location even when you don't have cell service.
Matt looks like he forgot to switch the display from Kilometers Per Hour to Miles Per Hour.
Need to do a video with people of different heights, like Jamie, mounting the PA, moving it around like in a garage, stopping with one foot on peg, one on the ground for tri-pod effect.

Thanks really appreciate the intro to all of the features of the PAS. Looking to buy another bike for long distance/duration touring, and I’m down to a BMW GS and a HD PAS. The ARH and the more contemporary electronics have me leaning toward the PSA. Appreciate your frank comments about putting it on a battery tender if not ridden daily. My 20 year old BMW has a strong battery charging system, so just something I need to pay attention to.
Although in the Midwest, come the first of the year will be riding where it is warmer, and seeing as I’ve spent a lot of time in the Palm Springs Coachella Valley area, it has me considering simply buying the bike in CA. FWIW I’d never even consider it, had I not been introduced to you folks through this video.

Got my Panam S yesterday. So it's totally new to me. Loved this tuto. Loads of info. 3 things bug me already with the bike :
    • The nav system goes through the phone, so you need to download the app, make an account and it's probably best to download a map.
I went out this morning and coming back it got lost - no map found etc... so you need to download the map.
I wish they had just used Apple Carplay instead of their system. I don't like the display on the bike. It's really not detailed. You can't get that TomTom Rider 3D sort of view as if you are on the bike. You're an arrow on a map. If there is a way around this I would like to know but I can't find any choice of view.
    • First 200yds out of the HD shop and all went black. No screen. Nothing. I restarted and another 500yds blackout again.
Back to the shop, they went for a ride and all was fine. I think the keyfob was getting interference from something I was carrying - car or house keyfob maybe.
Anyway all was fine today until tonight when the same thing happened. I put the fob in my jeans pocket and all was OK.
Would love to know if anyone has this kind of problem... and even if it's the problem.
    • And lastly - the bike gets hot. In traffic today it was 33°C and my left leg calf was burning. I've never had a bike that throws out that much heat. So shorts are out !
That aside my first impressions are good. It's an easy ride. Still running in but the Sport mode really moves.
I've never had a big trail before so I'm on a learning curve. And I will check out the USB-C situation.

Great video! Thank you for taking the time to go over functions and settings. I think you are correct that the GPS via Cell is not the best. Going from HD Ultra with built-in GPS would spoil anyone and probably frustrate others who expect the cell to display on PA to be anywhere near as convenient. I will miss the bagger but being in my early 70's I welcome the fact I will be losing 350 lbs or more. That's like 3 extra wives in my case! :-) Keep up the good work and thanks again.

Great detailed review of the controls and power -ports. It's a shame H-D didn't think about how to keep a phone or nav-unit charging while riding and attached to handle-bars. The other question/issue... What happens if you need to ride through 10-12 inches of water? Is the Battery box and regulator connections waterproof? Only an issue if you want/need to cross a small stream or deep puddle. Don't think the battery will be too happy if it's terminals are sitting in dirty water for more than a couple of seconds. The submerged water-bath will be similar to sticking a screw-driver across the terminals of that battery. Still only an issue for very deep puddles.

Great rundown Matt. But especially on an adventure/touring bike one would expect to have a charge port in a usb/usb-c you could hook up to your phone, camera, etc. That’s definitely a bummer and hopefully H-D will get that port “hot”

"hey guys, let's put the battery where it'll get submerged and a PIA to access in the field! bonus points for pelting the exposed R/R with rocks!"
    hmmmm.....
the foundation looks like it's there, but the details never got sorted. power accessibility, no GPS or even a dash power source, the only source being the gerbing style heated gear plugs sticking out from the seat gap? yikes.
better hope your phone is one of the few that will sync properly AND mesh it all with an "app". that always works out well right? God help you if your phone is a fan of something like sena, but not the HD headset. well, it has too, because it'll be locked under your seat and if it doesn't you're SOL. and be sure you never go anywhere your phone coverage drops.
since these can be fixed relatively easily by HD, with the exception of the massive problem with the battery and R/R position, this is probably going to receive some "model updates" pronto, which is great for most, but sucks to be a first version beta tester.
the lack of active cruise and a quickshifter I understand, that's to keep their cost down and not everyone will use them, but probably a good idea to offer as an option soon
it looks like a wonderful bike, but with glaring flaws

Battery looks to be covered by the regulator and a very large bracket...and it's a sealed battery, so weather shouldn't mess it up too much. I guess it is to be seen if it is a problem or if connector corrosion becomes an issue. It does get the weight of the battery low though, so that is a positive.
After owning many vehicles with gps navigation I've found I rarely use it...not sure if I would use it on a motorcycle. I doubt it though. Part of the adventure is getting lost and finding my way, IMHO. It's cool it has heated riding gear hookups and a battery tender cable already.
I see software updates in the future to make that usbc port live while the bike is running. That just makes the most sense for someone who wants to look at their phone while they ride while charging it.
The adaptive ride height is a game changer for us short people. Great idea on Harley's part for offering that.

Trying hard to find faults, nice try.If you so desire, put a USB port up by the console (If you know how). However, I'm not so "dependent" on a "phone" in my face on the handlebars to ride a motorcycle. The GPS is there through an app via bluetooth (better). BMW GS1250/850/750) you have to "buy"($949 us) a GPS unit. So, technically no adventure bike comes with GPS.
You can use any headset... not just an HD headset. Educate yourself with facts first.
It has cruise control. why do you need active? Do you even ride a motorcycle?

Yeah, I'm shocked nobody talks about the battery placement. My buddy just spent $21k for this bike and his battery got messed up and shorted the regulator from riding in the rain already. He didn't have it submerged but there was alot of rain. Great fun bike though 👍
Edit: there are slits/vents in the cover so yes, the battery connectors get wet. So, 1 battery, 1 regulator, and 1 fuse later, he's doing good but he said he will avoid the rain for now on until they make a different sealed cover. Not sure if they'll ever do that because the regulator needs air.

    • @DavidSmith-jj5pr
      @DavidSmith-jj5pr 3 года назад +1

@@PAULY-P that's the big one that's going to bite them , I think. the rest are "features" and can be fixed relatively easily, but the battery and R/R are ride enders and relocating them is not a simple thing.
I know they did a lot of testing, and swear it'll be fine, but no amount of engineering "around" the problem changes that water and electrics don't mix well.
will be interesting to see what do about it and when, once it gets more use in the real world.
