My husband and I spent this evening (our 54th wedding Anniversary) watching your video. He's a guitar player so we were curious to see the end result of the beautiful maple. Lovely bowl!
Thanks Jan and congratulations on 54 years, that is just amazing! 😍 😀
Keeping that section of edge was such a good decision. It looks great. And the simple design of the bowl really shows the beauty of that wood. It's gorgeous!
Thank you very much! 😀
What an amazing piece of wood, and you did it justice! I loved your design for the edge - genius!
Thank you so much Rachel 😀
I don't think I've ever seen a piece of wood that had such a difference in grain pattern that wasn't a burl. Another beautiful piece Mike.
Thanks! I think this almost has it all lol 😀
What a spectacular piece of wood. Burled, salted, curly, quilted, mineral streaks. Pretty much everything maple has to offer, except Birdseye, in one piece of wood. As a guitar wood lover, I think that would have made an awesome bookmatched guitar top.
Couldn't agree more! 😁
So often the simple approach gives the best results, this is a perfect example of that.
Thanks Edward and I completely agree 👍
With wood as with people - the imperfections make it interesting and loveable.
I completely agree Judith 😀
I am surrounded by big leaf maple trees full of figured and burl wood. It is one of my favorite woods to turn just because each piece is like birthdays and Christmas for the final results. And each piece is unique.
It really is and you are so luck to be surrounded by such beauty 😀
Exquisite choices about releasing the natural beauty of the grain and live edge. Love hearing your thoughts as well. I feel honored to have a front row seat in view of your process. Really a joy to see this unfold.😊
Thanks so much Penny, really appreciate your words and your support! 😀
What a fabulous result.! Your sense of how to get the best out of a piece of wood never seems to fail. 10/10
Thank you very much Duncan 😊
Once more your skill has brought out the beauty hidden inside the wood. Great work.
Thanks so much Simon 😀
With your track record, I’m beginning to expect a beautiful result in each video. But don’t change a thing! Keep up the great work Mike. 😊
Thanks Joe, I will always try my best 😀
What a beauty!!! The simple design of the bowl brings the attention to the gorgious wood and that enhances the design in it’s turn…. Not surprised you just had to buy this piece of maple Mike!!
Thank you very much, I bought more as well 😁
Gorgeous work as ever. And even as a guitarist myself, I think turning a bowl with it was the right choice.
Thank you very much, unfortunately I have no musical ability at all 😀
That’s beautiful Mike!! As always. I love how you shape each piece to bring out the best in the wood. Love it 😃
Thank you so much Donna, I think I got it right on this piece 😀
WOWZAH!! It’s like it’s made of molten gold. Love the piece and here’s a smooch for Hooch 😘😘
Thanks Amie and Hooch says hi and thanks 😀
What a gorgeous slab of Maple! And an even better turning. Well done, Mike.
Thanks so much 😊
Love the simplicity and natural beauty of this piece. It's one of my favorites that I've watched you make so far.
Thanks Noma! I really appreciate that 😀
I really enjoy your videos. Your passion and appreciation for what you do is inspiring.
Thanks so much Rick, I really appreciate that 😀
The grain and chatoyance in this piece is astounding! It is almost mesmerizing. I zoomed in on the bowl while paused, while that doesn't give the full effect it was still beautiful. Thank you
Thank you so much, you will find some bigger pictures on my social media 😀
Very beautiful bowl. I really like the shape you cut the rim and the bit of live edge.
Thank you so much, I just had to leave that bit in 😀
I like the way you were thinking when selecting how to cut your blank. Beautiful piece.
Thanks so much my friend, I think I made the right choice 😀
Thank you for sharing Mike, the bowl is going to make a great centre piece. It turned out looking awesome, I really like that you kept the live edge portion. You must have the patience of a saint, 5 coats and 6 hours wait between each one. Mike's 2nd hobby must be watching paint dry. 🙂
Haha thanks 🤣
Mike, love the new shop. It’s wonderful you found a good place and have “picked up where you left off “. Your videos are a wonderful stress reliever after a long day at work. Thank you from Tennessee.
Thanks so much Steve, so glad that you find my work relaxing, all the best, Mike 😀
Mike, WOW!!! This is one of your best pieces. Love the natural finish. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Thank you! Cheers Bryce, I'll do my best 🙂
Beautiful as usual, Michael! An object befitting the center of a wooden coffee table of the rustic living room of a log cabin.
Hahahaha, thanks my friend 😀
The wood speaks for itself. Nicely done, Mike.
Thanks Hubert, I completely agree 😀
Another beautiful bowl. The figure in the wood is gorgeous. I love that you keep the shape simple to let the beauty of the wood really shine through.
Thank you so much 😀
Another very nice outcome indeed
The finish is just right for the maple, keeping its true colours while enhancing the grain
Great work, Mike .
Thank you! Cheers! 🙂
I kept trying to imagine it as a guitar. I imagine that would have been beautiful too, but this is glorious, and you still have another portion of the piece to use on another project.
Thanks and indeed I do, I have an idea what to do with it and you will find out in a month or two 😀
Love the natural edge, Beautiful maple bowl.
Thanks Shirley, I love it too 😀
That grain just pops! Awesome bowl Mike!
Thanks my friend, the wood did all the work for me 😀
I love that discus-edge you made here, that really matches perfectly with the amazing wood. As a hobby guitarist my heart cries for each guitar that is not built, but that's a great alternative for that piece of wood, another Holton - Masterpiece ❤
Thanks Wolfgang, don't worry, the shop had far nicer pieces that I could not afford that will go on to make beautiful instruments 😀
Sitka spruce is commonly used for guitar tops. It took forever to find some that was the size I wanted, not pre sized for a guitar. Finally found some quarter sawn. The grain is perfectly straight, no figure whatsoever. This is why it is the go to wood for aircraft construction. Awesome project!
Thanks, very interesting! 😀
At the end of the day, you have made a fantastic job. The natural edge adds to the look. Where some might have turned it out, you chose to leave it in and it's beautiful.
Thanks David, I just had to get some of that edge in, all the best, Mike 😀
Wow, Mike, you definitely have a knack for finding beautiful wood. Another amazing piece! I love the choice to retain part of the natural edge.
Thanks Matt, the edge there was so beautiful I just had to keep a piece 😀
Another stunning piece of art! The grain is incredible, and I'm so glad you left the live edge. I can only imagine how fantastic it looks up close. Excellent!! 😊
Thank you so much Cynthia, the grain is amazing it looks so much better in person😀
Music for the eyes. Great bowl. 👍
Thank you! Cheers! Nicholas 😀
Hello stranger lol another beautiful piece thank you for the video can't wait for another notification of a new video...happy turning
Haha thanks, my friend 😀
That wood is stunning and so is your ability to turn it
Thanks so much 😀
wow buddy you have a artists eye to see the wonders in the wood great job thanks
Wow, thank you Debra 😀
Beautifully turned Mike, glad you saved that natural edge!
Thanks, me too 😊
The still pictures look so much better than the video, but as you said cannot do justice to the magic of mother nature in this wood. I love the platter. Very well done. Good idea to have a simple shape and let the wood speak.
There is a well known guitar company (at least in the US) called Martin Guitar less than 1hr drive from my place. I have toured the factory, but they do not sell pieces of wood, only the laser cutouts for the round sound hole. I have some scraps of mahogany which were given to a turning club member who was a friend of someone who worked in the wood preparation area. The mahogany looks normal, no special figure.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, I could have spent all my money in this place. Luckily I left with only 5 planks lol
What a beautiful result !!!! It’s always such a pleasure to see your ideas come to fruition in such glorious fashion.
Thank you so much! 😀
A beautiful piece of maple, stunning. You and the wood have made a outstanding work of art sir. Thanks for sharing your work with us.🌿 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you very much Rob 😀
What a great piece. The character of the wood is amazing. Would look great with some Bunches of Grapes on. Well done.
Not a bad idea, I love grapes 😀
I'm really enjoying your videos and learning about a completely new-to-me skill, thank you. Love the dog, too,
You are so welcome Rhiannon, the dog's name is Hooch 😀
Fantastic piece the grain patterns really show the beauty of the wood with little bit of live edge which just finishes the bowl off
Thank you very much Paul 😀
That's us absolutely gorgeous and I love the wood and the markibgs in it.❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much Karen 😊
Put that up for sale Mike , dont let the mrs claim it , un less she buys it ,,its lovely gorgeous finish i know it took a lot longer to get there thn we see 👍👍👍
Haha thanks Vini, I will be selling this one, my wife has too much already 😀
What a fantastic grain on that piece Mike. Thanks again for sharing your time and projects with us.
My pleasure! 😀
Enjoy hearing your thoughts as you make your decisions. So much going on in the figuring of the wood. Stunning, elegant piece!
Thanks Charmaine, this wood is just so beautiful 😀
Simply stunning. I do like the oriental style . Thanks mike😊
Awesome! Thank you Bev 😀
Hello Mike. Maple is such a beautiful wood to look at and work with. I think you hit the trifecta with this piece. Beautiful figuring, nice chatoyances', & the spalting. I was turning a small piece yesterday and suddenly I got a hint of a scent of the maple. Then it dissipated. Like a perfume on a beautiful woman walking by. LOL, never-mind me. The live edge gives it just enough of a raw quality to finish it off very nicely. I didn't hear any comments about how cold you were so I'm assuming your heater must be up to the job. Congrats again on the move, the new shop and good seeing you back at the lathe. Take care and keep turning. Bill Riley.
Hi Bill and thanks so much, I know exactly what you mean about the smell, I love it. This wood was just so nice it made my job so easy. So nice when everything comes together. All the best, Mike
Absolutely love the shape you decided for this piece. Breathtakingly beautiful.
Thank you so much Vicki 😀
I love that bowl, the wood is beautiful. Such talent!
Thanks so much Nana 😀
Beautiful amber waves of (wood) grain! The design is perfect, the edge came out perfectly. I wasn't sure what you were going to do with the edge, and it was a pleasant surprise. Nicely done, Mike!
Thank you very much my friend 😊
Great job !!!
The grain is so beautiful.
You design all of your projects so well !!!
Great start for your new shop.
Thank you! Cheers Robert 😀
You always amaze me with the wood you find and what you do with it. I also love that you will try to keep a natural part on the piece. Great job. 😊❤
Thanks Deborah, the edge was so beautiful I have to keep part of it 😀
Much character this one has😊
And strong with the force as well 😀
The 5 coats of Danish oil has really brought the wood back to life. Another great piece Mike. Well done.
Thanks 👍 🙂
Beautiful wood, beautiful piece. If you haunt the guitar-wood shop more, you might keep your eye out for pieces of Black Limba. It's got amazing figure and is commonly used for guitar bodies.
Thanks Paul, I bought another 4 slabs from there but non were black limba, I'll give them a call 😀
Wow - really turned out to be elegant! I like the shape, I think that it works perfectly for this piece.
Thank you so much! ☺️
That wood is beautiful! I love the bit of live edge. Thanks Mike!
Glad you like it Brenda 😁
Another beautiful piece, the grain is just stunning.
Thank you very much John
Absolutely stunning. The shape is so elegant!
Thank you so much Tom 😀
That is a beautiful piece of maple, and you did it justice. Great job as always Mike.
Thank you very much William 😊
Very nice I can see the face in the bowl. A beautiful piece of wood.
Thanks, I'll go look 😃
Deine Gitarre wurde mal wieder perfekt 👏👍Sehr schön gemacht 👌
Danke Michael, das hat viel Spaß gemacht
Wow!! Figure galore!!
I know, it's everywhere!! 😀
That's better as a bowl that everyone can see and use that as a guitar. What a beautiful piece of timber to work with, and we have the prospect of another to come.
Thank you for sharing
Thank you very much David, I have a great idea for the other side but you will have to wait a month or two 😀
I think this is mr favourite piece by you so far.
Thanks, it is high up on my list as well 😀
Mable burl is so amazing. Beautiful piece!
It really is!🙂
Rustic but elegant. Bravo!
Thanks Barbara 😀
Hello Mike - well this one really shows what a fantastic eye you have for seeing the potential in a piece of wood. It is so beautiful. A real treasure! Thank you for sharing your delight in turning it.
You're welcome Angela, this wood did all the hard work for me, not even I could mess it up 😀
It's a stunning piece, I love the figure in the wood, just beautiful Mike.
Thanks so much Rena 😀
This is one of my favourite videos you have done, beautiful piece.
Wow, thank you Ian 😀
A STUPENDOUS PLATTER MARK👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💕🇬🇧
Thanks Maud, but who is Mark 😅😂😃
All I can say Mike , is WOW. 👍
Thanks Chris 😀
So happy to see you back turning in your new workshop! What a piece of beauty, I love the look of this bowl❤
Thank you very much! It is great to be back 😀
What a lovely piece of wood, a clean design (I am always in favour of keeping some natural edge if possible) and a super execution of it - another beautiful bowl, Mike; thank you for sharing with us.
Thank you very much David, your words mean so much 😊
Looks good. I love that figure in the wood.
Me too! So glad I found this piece 😀
Now I know how to apply danish oil I will be using it more often. Lovely piece.
Cool, one thing is you must let each coat dry before applying the next, if you apply too early it can get sticky 😀
Love it. You did a fantastic job of turning it. I really like the decisions you made all along the way. The DO is a great finish for it as well. Such a beautiful piece of wood. An absolutely stunning bowl/platter turned from it.
Thanks so much Doug, the wood made my job easy ☺️
Beautiful piece Mike. You made all the right choices letting the wood speak for itself.
Thank you very much Cody 😀
Looks great so glad you are back in action.
Me too! 😀
Didn't get to see this until a day late but so worth seeing. That's a beautiful bowl 😍
Thank you! Cheers Troy, this is one of my favourites 😀
I was hoping you'd keep that lovely edge... and you did. This piece is gorgeous.
Thanks so much, we were thinking along the same lines 😀
I really love this bowl! The wood, the lines, the live edge - amazing! And thank you for the repeated information. I forget easily (like the step of isopropyl alcohol) and have never known some things (like blonde shellac) that more experienced woodworkers know.
Thanks Susannah, I keep repeating everything as I easily forget as well 😀
@@MikeHolton 😄
Gosh it's beautiful 😊 they must make some great looking guitars 🎸 but Mike ur bowl with that Danish Oil finish is divine 🥣
Thank you very much Karen, they do make some amazing things there
Absolutely incredible. Beautiful grain and superb execution.
Thank you very much Glen 😀
