the singer in my band gave me Jeff Beck's "There and Back" album for my 27th birthday...at the time I was feeling pretty good about my drumming; got compliments every time I played, but when I heard Simon play "Space Boogie" I realized that I had a long way to go to get there...Simon is a drum god and his work with Toto was nothing short of brilliant! He's a "hall-of-fame" drummer if ever I've heard one!
Eye candy to watch his ambidextrous style, independence of limb, one of the few to incorporate octobans, feet of fury, and 22 years with Toto, taking up an almost impossible gig after the death of Master Jeff Porcaro. I'd say, with all due respect to different musical tastes, Simon is a Top 10 guy at any given time. The triple strokes is a French roll, taught to him through a bet David Paich made that Mike Porcaro could stump him with this movement. Simon lost $20, but gained a move for his bag of tricks. Love the central theme of this solo, which, by no means, was meant to blow everybody out of the room. Simon is a studio ACE, and an absolute gentleman to speak with. Cheers!
Simon did ONE album for Judas Priest. He is NOT a ‘thrash metal’ drummer. He’s played for Toto after Jeff Porcaro died and is known for his work with The Who, Jeff Beck, Mike Oldfield and his own band, Protocol. He had THREE snares, not two…Jesus dude…do your homework. He’s one of the best drummers ever to sit behind a kit.
Let’s try Toto for about 20 years. The Who, Jeff Beck, etc, etc. Simons Been playing since he was 5years old with his dad, who was a professional band leader. His approach to double kick transcends any Rock style drummer. He produces, he engineers, records. His pet project and baby is Protocol, which he has numerous albums snd tours the world. He has three snares, one also to the left. He has many unique ways of setting up and playing his set. Check out his unique set up with the hihat, which is cut, clamped, and played at an angle. He is truly ambidextrous. Uh hummm, MASTER studio drummer!
So true. Hes got this basic loop he works around the whole time. Its almost like he hits that snare from begining to the end on the same point in each 4 beat loop. Scuse my terminology. Im not a musician but just loves good music and has good friends in the music bussines.
Well, he did one album with Judas Priest as a session player in 1977. But he played with TOTO for over 20 years after Jeff untimely death. And you didn’t mention his amazing work with Jeff Beck, or his work with Mike Oldfield. And maybe more importantly, what he’s been doing since. That is to say his solo project Protocol 1-5, where he’s been playing with some of the best musicians on earth! So come on now. Even if you don’t know squat about the drummers you are “reviewing”, at least read the “whole Wikipedia page” … … and not a word about that “doubles part” which is performed “clockwise & counterclockwise” with the left and right hand. That’s the difficult, “mind blowing” and impressive part: try it! 😎 Edit: coincidentally I uploaded an “easy tutorial” on clockwise/counterclockwise yesterday: go for it (it’s a great mind melting exercise) ✌🏻🤩⬇️ ruclips.net/video/KVTOsj9uXGM/видео.html
Simon's not a thrash drummer. He does a lot of progressive jazz with his own band Protocol. Check out his work with Mike Oldfield, Jeff Beck, Hiromi, 10 cc, Stanley Clark, and others. I've seen a lot of great drummers in my life, but nobody touched Simon's performance I saw with Mike Oldfield in '84. The dude is a master showman as well as technician.
I saw Simon play with Toto in the round at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix AZ in 2001??? Had after show pass and had the opportunity to talk with him for a bit. Very humble, funny and personable guy. Incredible live drummer.
Just check out his resume. He has played with so many different artists. He played with Stanley Clark when he was young... and always kicked butt in Toto for a number of years. He one of my favorites.
How embarrassing that Fulton wasn’t aware of SP and didn’t even bother to do his homework. Even more lame is that he’s not even aware that Simon is playing open handed technique, plus is one of the finest players in the business.
First saw Simon with Toyah in 1982, a few clinics in 83, 85 and 86, Pete Townshend in 85, The Who in 89, Jack Bruce in 91 and a few more clinics since. Living legend and awe inspiring. In terms of studio albums I'd recommend There and Back - Jeff Beck, Rocks Pebbles and Sand -Stanley Clarke, Smallcreeps Day - Mike Rutherford, Crises - Mike Oldfield, Warrior Rock - Toyah, Russ Ballard - Russ Ballard, White City - Pete Townshend, The Buffalo Skinners - Big Country. and so many more.
Hyrda...live solo...is AMAZING...but seeing Simon Phillips play with the Who on TV a live concert...Want get fooled again...& was playing reached over and took the right Tom off while he was playing... AMAZING...BADASS
Never saw Simon, but I discovered him in the Jack Bruce Band. The album, “How’s Tricks”. He also played on an album “801 Live” with Brian Eno and some Roxy guys. Incredible drummer!
Going from memory here, I believe he played on Michael Schenker Group first LP back in 1980 and Pete Townshend’s Empty Glass LP right around the same time.
It's not just the bands he's,played with it's the bands and artists who have asked him to work with them on recordings and performances. I'm not going to list them. Look at Toto most of the founding members have been session musicians and so is Simon. When Jeff died he left a big hole in TOTO. Simon, in my view stepped in and delivered. Best way to judge or critique his work? Just listen the drums tell the story!
He starts of very chilled....then he starts building the rythm up gradualy with some very technical rolls inbetween and at the end he starts going balls out! And btw hes got 3 snares not 2.
Simon Phillips is one of the worlds most reowned allround drummers that can do the most. Legend will be a fair understatememt, and I am really surprised that you did not know much of him, before making this reaction. To be fair, this performance is not one of his most mindblowing, in my opinion. There are lots on YT to explore about him. Presently he is working with Darwin, a progressive rock band with Mohini Dey and Derek Sherinian. You should check it out.
Great Drummer. He's left handed so you can see how he applies different strokes using his left hand. He was the Who's drummer after Keith Moon died. He was Toto's drummer for over 12 years.
In an interview (drumeo i recall) he said that he's not leftie, but he trained to be one since two of his favourite drummers were, and also because he wanted to use more toms, which caused lower hihat position, which caused that he could not play cross handed so he just trained to be BOTH handed :D which is pretty effing imperssive. Also he realised that in playing left handed ride and hihat he can include toms into grooves much more easily.
This is the Simon Phillips as I know him for over the last 30 years (and I've been a Toto fan since I was 6, so that was in 1990). Simon became the drummer of Toto just after Jeff died in 1992. Simon has always been my favourite, and for a good reason :D ruclips.net/video/3LIAPhjZGX4/видео.html&ab_channel=YeOldeRock
Especially face to face is an extreme challenge on drums....for himself he mentioned years ago. My shelf is filled with old Toto stuff, with both Jeff and Si and lots of Si's soli stuff and los lobotomies.
Totally spellbound by all he does, and how he builds and phrases…. Another great drummer: Aron Mellergårdh from Swedish fusion trio Dirty Loops, featured with a drum solo in their song “Work Shit Out”, link below. See what you think :) cheers 👍
I suggest you look up Trio Elf. Their drummer, Gerwin Eisenhauer, has been described as a human drum machine…. He has some cool videos on the MEINL Cymbals channel.
You should check out Nightwish, they had 2 drummers so for Jukka the old one and Kai new, both are great! 3 singers, Floor is my favorite and she's awesome check out Live at Wacken or Wembley or Buenos aires. Wacken is the old drummer the others are the new one.
Have you heard Santana SOUL SURVIVOR at Woodstock Michael Shrieve on drums. Be sure to listen to the version with the full drum solo. Also, don't Wright Ringo off too soon. ❤
good drumming is not about mind blowing it is about good grove with feel and time. that is what makes a great drummer better than a good drummer, not mind-blowing speed or fills.
Can't you ... go deeper ? Learn more about an artist while getting views on his performances ? Add something, do your homework, do deeper analysis, meaningfully comments... you're empty
Clearly you know nothing about Simon Phillips mate, you should check out his CV before you even start to comment on the legend that is Simon Phillips Dude !!!!!
So you mean you, as a drummer, weren't aware of who Simon Phillips is or the drums he uses? The dude is a stone cold legend in the drumming world.
“Good studio drummer.” Much more than that, definitely an understatement.
the singer in my band gave me Jeff Beck's "There and Back" album for my 27th birthday...at the time I was feeling pretty good about my drumming; got compliments every time I played, but when I heard Simon play "Space Boogie" I realized that I had a long way to go to get there...Simon is a drum god and his work with Toto was nothing short of brilliant! Really...a good studio drummer? One of the greatest!!! Melodic

Simon has played for MUCH MORE than Judas Priest. Judas Priest should have been at the bottom of the prestigious positions he has had.
His time with TOTO was so good
Huge Simon Phillips fan.. He Played for Toto, The Who forever.. Plays open hand, his limb independence is next level... Doing his drumeo course now...
Simon Phillips is crazy limb independent. Love his solos and how he works around a certain phrase throughout.
So true. Hes got this basic loop he works around the whole time. Its almost like he hits that snare from begining to the end on the same point in each 4 beat loop. Scuse my terminology. Im not a musician but just loves good music and has good friends in the music bussines.
Personally his drumming on the Crises tour with Mike Oldfield was particularly special.
Well, he did one album with Judas Priest as a session player in 1977. But he played with TOTO for over 20 years after Jeff untimely death. he was the session drummer for Judas Priest's Sin after Sin.. great album..
Never saw Simon, but I discovered him in the Jack Bruce Band. The album, “How’s Tricks”.
He also played on an album “801 Live” with Brian Eno and some Roxy guys.
Incredible drummer!
801 live is one of my fave live albums. The late Francis Monkman played bass on that album.
Going from memory here, I believe he played on Michael Schenker Group first LP back in 1980 and Pete Townshend’s Empty Glass LP right around the same time.
Simon Phillips. Tama drums. Zildjian cymbals. Remo heads. 40+ years endorsed by these same companies.
He’s my favorite drummer.. I’ve met him!
Definitely has rhythm, some cultural vibes there!
Is Independent with protocol. Has played one million studio albums, best sound, best technique and so on….
He also featured on the Gary Moore album "Back on the Streets."
Jeff Beck
Yes, Space Boogies double kicked shuffle in 7/8 is of historical significance ✌🏻🤩

One of the few drummers with an extremely distinctive sound. I can tell him out of hundreds.
It's not just the bands he's,played with it's the bands and artists who have asked him to work with them on recordings and performances. I'm not going to list them.

For me, it's difficult to watch Simon Phillips and not think of Billy Cobham. But yeah, what @apeistheplace said...
Simon Phillips is one of the worlds most reowned allround drummers that can do the most. Legend will be a fair understatememt, and I am really surprised that you did not know much of him, before making this reaction.

1 of if not the best session drummer ever.. bands his played in ppl his played for... very long list.
No one can listen carefully his dynamic drumming. 😂 he even play kickdrum in dynamic❤
Yes one of many favorites
Simon played with Stanley Clarke, Asia, Protocol and Jeff Beck
Great Drummer. He's left handed so you can see how he applies different strokes using his left hand. He was the Who's drummer after Keith Moon died. He was Toto's drummer for over 12 years.

He's actually an ambidextruos right handed, but play openhanded to accommodate yet another tom (10) but still keeping the looks of the kit...
Loved Jeff Beck. Such a sad loss. Protocol now takes the biscuit. Such a stellar group.
I ve seen him with Toto in London 2006 Falling in Between tour .
Simon Phillips played with Judas Priest way back in the Day Great drummer.
Simon Phillips is so good. His stuff has kept me going since Brand X stopped recording. And yeah, Judas Priest before was my thing too. ;)
For 50 years or so a fan.
fan for decades, since the Roxy years
You really need too watch his videos from back in the day!!
This is the Simon Phillips as I know him for over the last 30 years (and I've been a Toto fan since I was 6, so that was in 1990). Simon became the drummer of Toto just after Jeff died in 1992. Simon has always been my favourite, and for a good reason :D

He's my favorite. He could replace anybody?
That's him on Pete Townsend's "Give Blood."
I was getting some Steve Gadd vibes in Simon's playing.
The Pete Townsend albums from the 80’s… particularly Give Blood and Face the Face from White City
Especially face to face is an extreme challenge on drums....for himself he mentioned years ago. My shelf is filled with old Toto stuff, with both Jeff and Si and lots of Si's soli stuff and los lobotomies.
I like simon phillips I like tama drums
Totally spellbound by all he does, and how he builds and phrases….
Another great drummer: Aron Mellergårdh from Swedish fusion trio Dirty Loops, featured with a drum solo in their song “Work Shit Out”, link below.
See what you think :) cheers 👍

Toto favorite band.. along with his solo protocol.
I suggest you look up Trio Elf. Their drummer, Gerwin Eisenhauer, has been described as a human drum machine….

Hiromi The Trio Project
Have you heard Santana SOUL SURVIVOR at Woodstock Michael Shrieve on drums. Be sure to listen to the version with the full drum solo. Also, don't Wright Ringo off too soon. ❤
Yoiu bet I like him, like his unmuffles toms sound
I am judas priest fans Simo phillips very good drummer and scott travis judas to day very good drummer 👍
110% agree @Hail_Sagan. SP is an absolute stone cold legend. How he has never heard of SP is a bit strange? Im sure SP wont be too disappointed
Dude, i think you should check Spencer Prewett from Archspire. Dude is badass.
BIG Simon Phillips fan....

Thumbs up for simon Phillips, thumbs down for the clueless youtuber....

Drummer for Toto , the Who, Los Labatomy etc
He wasn't on the best Priest album: Painkiller 🤘
✌️🤠💥🌟🌀👍
Pretty good? One of the best I think you'll find.
Favorit: los lobotomies
And he is an absolute musical drummer.

My 6: year could play better than this.
Stupid comment even gets a heart? You are both clueless about drumming.

The who
Well, him, Hiromi Uehara and Anthony Jackson played a lot together. Not much better than those three is there?
