Carding cloth comes in 5 grades: 54, 72, 90, 120, and 190 TPI (teeth per square inch). That sounds the sort of thing they're looking for. I think it's normally sold in 12" widths for drum carders and blending boards and there maybe a minimum order. An online search for carding cloth should produce a few suppliers. If they know what grade they have they could buy some or maybe get offcuts to replace what they currently use. I'm not sure how they'd find out how soft it is.
They all said if it feels right in your hand. Anyone who uses tools knows that feeling of it’s just right in the hand!
Talking to Dean reminded me of the old joke about the man who took his shoes to the cobbler to be repaired. On the way home he's attracted by a sign and joins the merchant navy.
He comes home 6 years later and when going through the pockets of his old coat he finds the cobblers repair ticket. Out of curiousity he visits the shop and hands the ticket in. "Just a minute" says the cobbler and goes into the back of the shop.
He returns a few minutes later and says, "they'll be ready on tuesday" 😂😂
Thanks Dom great stuff, I'm such a tool head this really made my day just knowing I'm not alone out here!! So many tools and so little time! Happy Christmas everyone.
Your definitely not alone! Haha
Do you live in New England? If not, plan a vacation in the inland parts…along rivers where the original manufacturing firms set up. Gardner, Mass. and nearby Athol, as well as Greenfield a bit farther west…lots of manufacturing history there. The Starrett factory in Athol has a video of their tour…goes over my head but fun to try…
If you want a more modern product…Boeing in Everett Wa.
Lovely episode Dom. I love Steve's grandfather's what I'm pretty sure is a Stanley 4" ratchet, I did have one of those but I lost it many years ago. Probably inside an Organ somewhere that I was putting back together after it was rebuilt. And probably found by another organ builder in the last 20 years lol I also had the big brother of Steve's one I think they had 8" long blades not including the handle with about a 3/8" wide tip suitable for number 10 and 12 wood screws, not the crappy things we get nowadays but proper Nettlefolds wood screws. Shows you how old I am lol. Happy Christmas and New Year to Everybody at the Repair Shop and to you in particular Dom
Hi Dom, great one as always. The teddy bear lady’s brush looks like the file card for cleaning metal files!!
That’s what I thought but it’s very fine
Merry Christmas Dom & all at the Repair Shop.
Come back next year please
We will be back, bigger and better than ever!
This was fun. Thanks Dom for freezing for us, your sacrifice is appreciated hugely!! Happy Christmas to you. 😀🎅
Brilliant Christmas You Tube Dom - many thanks to everyone at TRS - Hope you and all of your TRS families have a wonderful Christmas and New Year 🎄🥃😊
Merry Christmas Dom look forward to next year. Love your book by the way
You can tell when someone is a real person when they have a favourites obscure tool, I wonder if our kind of people are dying out now most people are controlled by electronic devices. Happy Christmas to you Dom, and keep these gems coming along! Chris B.
What a lovely gentle video. Happy Christmas to you and all the gang 🌞
I had the lugs of a badly damaged gold watch case lazer welded . Good as new so get one Steve.
The most wonderful show ever. The most precious group of people working together to make so many happy. At home too we all love and enjoy your show every single day. We will watch this show forever. Love the UK accents. You are wonderful 6/30/24.
Absolutely amazing show and people god bless you all . ❤
Happy Christmas. Fantastic video. Going in search of part 1!
I got the given the very same screwdriver as Steve has by my Grandfather, it was kept for years with my meccano set as a child.
the Bears: That Card (Brush) similar ones are used for cleaning files from chips. Maybe Files Supply may have one.
The Brush. Looks to me very similar to brushes used by professional dancers to renovate their chrome leather soles, so maybe try a supplier of dance shoes. Good Luck!
Awesome vid, thanks Dom!
For the Bear Ladies - it might be worth looking at dog grooming products - I have a very similar brush to your Mohair brush for our dogs. The one I have is probably too big and too coarse, but I believe they make different grades, they certainly make different sizes.
The wee brushes that you can use on long haired cats to groom them might work for the mighty Bear Ladies. Just an idea.
Dom - I've got one of those screwdrivers Lucia wished for. Can I send it to you to pass on?
No Suzi?
These are fabric scissors.
They are made for cutting fabric.
If you cut anything else with them, i will cut you. (But not with these scissors)
Oh my gosh, I am so happy to find this channel. The Repair Shop is hands down my favorite show ever, and in my opinion the best show on TV anywhere. I love the heart and soul of the show and love the experts. Every one of you folks are inspirational in your own way. Thank you sincerely for what you do. Dominic, I am now a huge fan of your channel. Cheers!!
I can't think of a Repair Shop craftsperson that isn't a fan favourite. You're all very different but all lovely!
I know I am very late, but I just watched this video. I went looking for a carding brush. I found a Velvet carding brush. I thought if it was gentle enough for velvet it would work for you. I am from the States. I found it from a company Aramsco. It is $25.78 US dollars. I am sure you have already found one. Just wanted to pass it on.
I also want to tell you how much I enjoy watching the two of you bring back these beautiful stuffed animals back to life. I have a small brown bear, named TedTed, that I wish I could bring to you both. After watching, maybe I can try and fix myself. Love the whole crew.
As a Yankee, I just want to say, Thank you for all of the repair shop, for keeping history alive. So much talent in the same place, America needs a similar type show and shop. Just saying.
Love how Dominic has made these RUclips videos. Thank you.
there is something so special and so intimate as having a go-to favorite tool. It's like an old friend
I tell apprentices to look after their tools, even the simplest screwdriver or whatever, because you develop a feel for them and they become more comfortable / efficient / effective to use. They look at you like you are from another planet, but every one of the experts said the same, whatever their favourite tool, “it feels good / right / …”
Great insight as well as video #1… thanks 🙏 Dom and all of you who do restoration at the Repair Shop… it’s truly a wonderful show… always such an emotional experience. Bless you all… 🌜🌞🌛
Brilliant content Dom, love watching all you guys on the show,so many quirky tools and techniques ..old is certainly gold .. always fascinated watching Steve on the show, i would love to be his apprentice .. as for Xmas tools.. id choose Steve's double glasses, tried to replicate and not had any luck, must be great on small fine objects.. Have a great Christmas Dom
That was excellent magic people & a top reviewer well done Dom love the repair shop staff & hope you all have a wonderful Christmas.
Lucia’s dental tool is a wax spatula used to add and shape a wax model of a tooth for a crown using the wax loss technique.
And it would be easily replaceable. I completely understand the emotional attachment to a person’s favourite tool, but if she ever lost it, she’d be in luck: she’d be able to find another one that is just as perfect.
Dom, The bear ladies carding brush looks exactly like this - Elbesee Teasle Brush for Fibres/Crafts available from Amazon
The lovely ladies working on teddy bears should talk to a gunsmith. What they have there is a gunsmith carding brush. They are very soft steel bristled brushes used to card off the rust on firearms when rustblueing for instance.
The softer brush could also be a 'slicker' brush rather than a carding brush.
Thank you!
Thanks so much
I wish I knew how to send a photo, but for the bear ladies, I use a slicker brush for short hair cats and dogs. Same shaped, soft bristles. Quite large as sold, about 3”x4”, but the bristle pads could be cut and attached to smaller handles. Available in pet section of dept. stores here in the states.
@@thomassymber I was going to suggest a pet shop as well.
💚🐇🐴💚
Someone said below but yes, I knew it looked familiar, there are pet grooming brushes very similar to the brush the Bear Ladies are looking for. Great peeks behind the scenes! Really wish we could watch the show here in the US. Miss seeing it. Merry Christmas to all!
I watch the re-runs on U-Tube. I'm not sure when this program stopped, but I'm so sad about not being able to see more episodes. Sigh🥺😔😐!
It hasn't. Series 13 ( season 13 for folks across the Atlantic ) started on BBC1 on 10th April 2024.
@@alanclarke4646 13 seasons, holly cow. I have only seen up to season 6
Ive been wanting to make my own boots after getting into leathercraft in lockdown but its almost a lost art. I cant find many books on it at all. It would be awesome to see a video of recommended learning materials from all of you!
Another brilliant episode. Funnily enough I have the same screwdriver as Steve's favourite and it also belonged to my grandfather. Merry Christmas to you all!
Enjoyed this while having my lunch at work yesterday. Those teddy bear ladies are a giggle! You'll be delighted to know that I had your "...Tools..." book on my Christmas list and Santa duly obliged! Just been reading the Hammers chapter and especially enjoyed the Blacksmith's Hammer story about the head-without-handle you gave to Nick at the forge. Top work Dom. Keep it up mate. All the best, Graham. 👍🤓👍
My dad was a tool guy. After he died, my sis and I were stuck on how to keep his collection intact…when we had tight deadlines to get back to business 3,000 miles across country. Fortunately, we found an ideal solution…the longtime neighbor, a gifted baker who then transformed into a gifted old-house wallpaper expert…accepted the whole collection…on one collection. Her accountant husband threatened to move out if she acquired one more tool.
Fortunately it was tax season, and he was at the office more than usual..,
on one CONDITION…
I have the same small ratchet screwdriver as Steve has, its a Stanley that I bought new in the mid 70s; it has no paint left on the handle and the chrome is wearing away. For Christmas I would like a bigger workshop to put more tools in.
I'm probably as jealous of Richard's laser welder as Steve is, I really, really want one! I don't have a use for it but it's such a cool thing.
The episode with Ralph the rhino and Julie and Suzie giggling uncontrollably is my all-time favourite but I always enjoy every episode- long may the Repair Shop continue!
Hi Dom i think these are what Julie and Amanda are after Elbesee Teasle Brush for Fibres/Crafts from amazon
Another great RUclips from the repair team, amazing people love, listening to them on TV and yourself. Thank God I come across your RUclips channel after listening to your book on audible love tools so Merry Christmas from the Blind man from kent 13:44 14:19
Tell the teddy bear ladies that I think a velvet carding brush for upholstery is gentle enough. They should ask Sonnaz where they might find some. I see them for sale in the U.S. but I'm sure they can be sourced locally.
Great video, and I am so with Julie and her scissors. I have a special pair for cutting thread anyone touches them and there's war! Happy Christmas!
Fascinating. I love old tools and have a shed full of them. Many of my older tool either belonged to my father or grandfather. I have some lovely wood saws that I would love to get sharpened but I cannot find a saw doctor anywhere these days. Any idea?
It's possible to buy a sawset and a saw file and do it oneself. Amazon have sawsets for less than £30 and triangular saw files for less than £10.
@@alanclarke4646 Thank you. I might give that a go.
Hi Dom, Thank you for the video, good bit of fun seeing what everyone likes best of all the different things Like every one else
I have a Steve screwdriver, was my dad's , stay safe All the best Brian 😃
I love watching Steve on TRS just to see his tool carousels. I want some the same but can't work out if they can be purchased or if they are something Steve has made. There are loads of plastic imitations on the market but I need some like Steve's.
The Bears might like to try a soft brass bristled brush much like the one they have but with brass bristles. Hardware shops stock them.
I've got one of those ratchet screwdrivers like Steve's! Literally the same make and size - just about the same amount of wear too! I remembered it as a child and rescued it from my mothers stuff when we were clearing out a few years ago.
Steve Fletcher holds up the first tool that I ever bought myself. I picked-up one of those little ratchet screwdrivers from Woolworth's with some of the cash from my very first ever pay packets. cherished the little screwdriver for many years but then suddenly it just seemed to disappear. Then many years later I rediscovered it buried in the grass my parents garden, much to my surprise the ratchet still worked perfectly even thought the blade itself was exceeding rusted and most of the pint had parted company with the wooden handle. I pretty sure it's still tucked away in the "old tool" box out in the garage now. I'm getting on a bit now but the sight of that screwdriver brought back pleasant memories; I'd better dig it out, and put with the gear that's eventually going to accompany me in my box on my final journey.
I think that the tool that Lucia is trying to describe is a six-in-one screwdriver. Very handy for working in building maintenance ,but I am curious how she would use it for art conservation.
I grew up poor, my first bicycle I built out of spare parts, using a “crescent wrench” / adjustable. I have been a tree climber, carpenter, fixed cars since a kid, mechanic, repair guy, leather , toys , tools, truck & even a tractor, airplanes & helicopters, fabricated…
But my favorites are the old ones, made to last, quality steel ( some new) “ Got to Have” I think the hart of this show, a thread, like we all are Doctor’s (I have had to fix myself many times! Ruff kid & adventurous) and have helped injured animals, but isn’t it what we repair people do ? We like old things & make them last!! Someone please tell me they don’t look at Steve and don’t think of him as a Surgeon?!! For I know, we are Caring Humans any one on this show has probably like me, animals, things and People for isn’t this show fixing & making people’s inside better & we do the best we can! “ wish list” some people wish they had a Repair person & the repair people want / need a repair person , hence the team work!! I wish I had a professional tool & Knife sharpener!!! When I was a kid , there was a man that would come through our neighborhood & do all the mom’s kitchen knives & scissors !! ( mom’s used to Sew clothes) The Repair Shop Could use a “Sharpie Man” !
I'm just close to the end of the Tool Book. It has been fun to read it while also learning about the specialty tools. Thank you for putting it all together.
OMG. I have the exact same ratchet screwdriver, also gifted to me by my grandfather ! ❤ Brilliant little driver
This reminded of my grandad,he was a shoe repairer in London, and he used a tool like Dean’s favourite one. He had lots of big machinery too. Thanks for that.
To the Teddy Bear Ladies; Suede shoe bushes are what I use sometimes. from places like Trespass or maybe Amazon. I also make really stiff one from file cards glued to plywood.
Thank you! I’ll pass it on
@@DominicChineas Dom, I have similar brushes like this for cleaning metal files, needed especially if you have been filing soft metals.
The small brush you can try the brass suede brushes, others are used for cleaning out metal files. There is a leather goods supplier (the shoe man should know - Healy's near Rotherham - that might have the card ones in stock).
I love watching the Repair Shop. All the artists are phenomenal. I was wondering where the shop is located? Is it England or Ireland or maybe Scotland? ❤😂
RE Sharpening tools:
I used to take a 'Sharp Edged Tools' course at Dartington Forestry School.
Whilst hooked tools can have quite a course edge courtesy of a 'Barker' stone, I used to insist on a very keen edge for the Snedding & Felling Axes.
Very interesting post Dom!
Great video Dom , a unique insight to everyones speciality tools of their trades and crafts. Have a lovely Christmas Dom and all the craftsmen and woman of the Repair Shop . chat soon mate!.
Thanks so much Dave! I should have filmed your favourite while I was down!
Merry Christmas
Absolutely love the channel Dom and of course The Repair Shop as well. I knew Steve was going to choose the screwdriver, but I have to agree with you, that lathe is amazing. I would love to find more information about his manual drill press as well. I just wish we could get the show here in the states on a regular basis. I have to agree with the statement below about the show being the best on TV and i do not think there is a close second.
@Dominic Chinea, Excellent vid on what tools people of the Repair Shop use, hopefully, sent the Teddy Bear Ladies a link to help them in the search for their favourite brush
I have almost exactly the same screwdriver as Steve. I bought it 63 years ago to make a present for my parents that they never used! Its almost as good as new, except the lacquer is wearing off.
Steve is an amazing person. He and Will, my favorites. Thank you guys for making an incredible show.
The simple reason why you can't beat old tools is that they have years of experience! Don't laugh, it's true! An old hammer or chisel (or whatever) knows exactly what it is doing and tells you that when you pick it up.
They don’t make tools like they used to. I love tools. I do marble and granite installations and fabrications and have all the cool tools. From the first rock I cut on a wet saw…I was hooked. Been over 35 years now.
Hey Dominic, your just a big kid, lol it's ok, I get it, everytime I look at my toy bus collection I'm a kid again.
Hello Dom,
I got some hints for you 😉 …
The changeable flat and phillips screwdriver for Lucias Christmas gift is easy to find in the factory toolbox (mostly at the spare wheel) of older VW cars. I love them too 😬.
The german stuffing stick of Amanda seems to me more like a pricking tool to harvest asparagus or in german „Spargelstecher“.
And for Julies carding brush, there could be a substitute available at the pet shop for brushing the fur of cats and dogs, as they have softer ones that have similar „hooks“.
Hope this can help and
Happy Holidays to all of you! 🎄✨
Have an identical screwdriver to Steve's, was also my Grandfather's.
Dom another fantastic video , and insight into the people that make this show so special
That brush the girls had was for carding files. I probably came with a file set.
Bitterly cold LOL. It was -28°C yesterday here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Seriously great video Dom, keep up the good work.
Great video Dom, always fascinating to hear about people's favourite work tools. Hope all the Repair Shop experts have a fun festive season!
Will, you need a fine diamond hone or wheel, followed by progressively finer wet and dry paper on a hard, flat surface. Finish on a felt buffing wheel with metal buffing soap. 5 minute job.
Dom. Get a stiff set of carding brushes and anneal them. They will soften up.
Great film. Get Loochia to check out my stocking filler review I just done…of a multi tip screwdriver that I just got.
If the teddybear ladies need brush for cleaning bears try using the head of the teasel plant. The teasel plant was used to help cars wool.
Great video and very interesting, the main thing taken from that is things truly aren't made like they used to. Merry Christmas Dom and all at the Repair Shop!
That’s true, apart from Ranalahs!!
@@DominicChineasfor sure, except for the Ranalahs!
Great video, love seeing everyone. Merry Christmas to everyone. Can't wait for new episodes. 🇨🇦🎄❄️🎅🤶⛄
From my very brief dental nursing career I think Lucia’s tool is called a “Flat Plastic”.
Love the videos as always Dom merry Christmas to you and all at the Repair shop fantastic program ❤️ hoping that 2023 is a great year for all of you 👍👍♥️
Brilliant, thank you Dom. I guess we all have those tools which really fit the hand and do the job well. Interesting that all the Repair Shop folks have really simple tools as their favourites.
Great episode! Wish it was only -2 here though, was -44 when we got up this morning. Brrr.
Absolutely fascinating, hearing craftsmen talking about their favourite implements. I'm with Dean, old means gold - you cannot beat the heft of a favourite hammer, chisel, screwdriver, the just 'knowing' it will work. Great stuff Dom, you are a genial fellow! Liz in Suffolk
I have exactly the same screwdriver as Steve. It was given to me by an old guy who was retiring, he was retiring but he didn’t want his screwdriver to retire. Happy Christmas Dom and all the experts at the Repair Shop. BTW you tool book is great reading.
My Grandad had one as well but I think it is the size up from the one that Steve has.
Do you have the video on how to fix up a petrol Windmill please?
Thankyou Dom for your videos this year. I enjoy them all but especially the tool chats. Can I wish you and all our friends in The Repair Shop a very happy and warm Christmas. See you in 2023. Sue x
For the bear ladies… would a cut up file card be soft enough?
A pet brush may be a good idea for the teddy bear ladies... 😊
Liked and subbed..❤😂🎉 good on ya mate!!
I used to be a theatrical draper, making stage tabs, backdrops, cloths etc. I've been known to threaten death to people who want to nick my shears/scissors especially if they head towards paper.
The problem with paper I think is it has mica from china clay in it, which blunts the edges
i loved this video! I love the repair shop team! Everyone is just brilliant! ❤❤❤❤
A great video Dom - thank you. I have the long version of Steve’s screwdriver which has proven to be indestructible. Apart from turning screws, this tool has done service in many unconventional ways too. It has even stirred paint….. (Shame on me….) The handle is worn, the tool is old, but it still gets the job done. Yes, I would know it if blindfolded.
Just looked on EBay,which appears to be the similar animal "Elbesee Teasle Brush for Fibres/Crafts", hope this helps...
I’ll pass it on thank you!
Lovely to see all the Repair Shop people and their tools. Merry Christmas to you all and I hope you all get what you want from Santa. 🎅
Th brush for the bear ladies could be a brush for the souls of dance shoes. It's worth a try. May be too stiff though
