  • Today, we are demystifying Dilla Time with what we've dubbed London's SICKEST rhythm section - bass virtuoso Rob Mullarkey and one of the most unique drummers in hip-hop and drum ’n’ bass, Richard Spaven.
Mullarkey has mastered the worlds of groove and odd-time signatures on the bass guitar, but how do those skills translate when playing with a drummer? Watch Rob and Rich completely stretch and reassemble your sense of time.
You’ll also get exclusive insights into Rob’s approach to beat displacement, the octave pedal he uses for his gig with Jacob Collier, and more! Plus, he’ll show you how to use your own setup to create catchy melodies in your basslines.
And did we mention that we've got some exclusive performances? Yep, let's dive in!

    ROB MULLARKEY
“Purveyor of finest low notes”, Robin Mullarkey is best known as bassist to a generation of progressive and diverse English artists including Jacob Collier, Jordan Rakei, Zero 7, Eska, Roisin Murphy, Natalie Williams, Richard Spaven, Laura Mvula, John Newman and more recently Leon Vynehall, Anton Eger, Steve Wilson and even Quincy Jones.
Robin is also known for his involvement with the UK broken beat movement, producing two ground-breaking LPs fusing his academic jazz background with the contemporary dance aesthetic in the band Brotherly. The music appealed to “muso’s” and soul loving crate diggers alike and has won him international accolades for his challenging yet approachable arrangements, incorporating woozy tempo shifts and cheeky harmonic devices.

    RICHARD SPAVEN
As a drummer, composer or artist, Richard Spaven is one of the world’s most exciting and genre-defying. His career has seen him play for many of music’s most innovative artists both on stage and in the studio: Jose James, Flying Lotus, The Cinematic Orchestra, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, Gregory Porter to name but a few.

Hey All! We just wanted to share that due to a mixing mishap the backing track on 'Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine' sounds a little out sync compared the way it was really played. We apologise and the sound was rectified for the Podcast edition, which you can listen to here: ruclips.net/video/fMwPwp21Odk/видео.html

Hey Scott and Ian! Due to work issues, I am only just starting work on the Fretboard Accelerator and I'm excited about starting the Slap Accelerator as well. I was wondering if you guys could do a video tribute to Ray Shulman, who recently passed on March 30. Ray was not only an amazing bassist but a ridiculous multi-instrumentalist and songwriter as well! Love me some Gentle Giant!

I began playing bass in the late '90's to Dave Matthews band, moved from there into 70's funk, 50's/60's jazz, then some of the neo-soul (Baduizm, etc).
When when Voodoo came out, I lost my mind trying to understand what was happening. This was such a fantastic conversation, especially with the straight vs. Dilla examples. Bravo!

One of the most underrated Bass players of our time.
Can highly recommend anything he plays but to be more specific, checkout his cover of Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”. Another Sublime piece is Jacob Collier - With the Love in my Heart (Live in Toronto). On this track note Rob’s dynamic explosion at 7:20. Gives me spine chills every-time (how dare you touch me so musically appropriately Mr Mullarkey!).
While obviously adept at all aspects of Bass Mastery, Rob’s feel and dynamics are elite. Those dimensions of musicality are what seperate him from any number of other incredible bassists. Small wonder Jacob Collier has him in his touring band.
Not to be too selfish but can we please have more Mr Mullarkey?
