Saw Jacob Banks as an opening act by pure chance, didn’t know the dude at all. He floored me with his voice. I was really lucky to witness him followed by, who I consider to be one of Canada’s best vocalist, City and Colour (Dallas Green). You should REALLY check out City and Colour’s cover of Rain When I Die (Aline in Chains original). Bud, you won’t regret it. Huge fan btw! Keep it up.
A couple of points come to mind in hearing your analysis. First, I think you are right in saying that his voice is quite unique. He is soulful in his delivery and the emotion and pain in the words of this song come through loud and clear. He definitely packs a punch and his sound is rich and quite beautiful to listen to. The closest singer for me that comes to mind in terms of comparison is Teddy Pendergrass who started his career with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and eventually went solo. He is known famously as the voice behind the hits If You Don't Know Me by Now, Wake Up Everybody, Close the Door, and Turn Off the Lights to name to name just a few. He was noted for his rich and raspy baritone voice and emotionally backed performances. It is clear to me that Jacob Banks has been influenced somewhat by him and to some extent 60's soul singer Otis Redding. Banks actually was born in Nigeria and moved to England in his early teens. So, I think it is fair to say that his African roots have also had some impact on his style of music and manner of performance. As for his range, like Pendergrass I would classify him as a baritone with some tenor range. The resonance and richness of his tone makes that clear and is likely a strong reason why his voice stands out in an industry where tenors are abundant and often preferred and baritones are rare. He is someone I will definitely continue to follow and hopefully see live whenever I get the chance.
