  • Stop letting pain prevent your gains (train like an athlete here)
    athleanx.com/no-pain-more-gains
    Elbow pain when working out is the second most common source of joint pain when training (behind shoulders). When you get pain in your elbows it makes almost every upper body movement difficult to complete. Inner elbow pain can make chin-ups virtually impossible. Outer elbow pain can make even picking up a dumbbell feel like a chore (before you even do anything with it!).
    In this video I show you the two sources of elbow discomfort during weightlifting, what causes them and most importantly...what you can do to fix them. Before you even start watching however, you have to realize that elbow pain is almost never a problem of the elbows! Instead, weakness either in the primary movers of the joint or more distal in the forearm flexors or extensors causes the elbow to feel the brunt of the pain.
    Lateral pain is more commonly referred to as tennis elbow. Once flared up, tennis elbow can be very difficult to get rid of since it requires you to usually refrain from all gripping and lifting for at least a few weeks until the inflammation can calm down. When you return to lifting you are better off using dumbbells rather than barbells since you can't hide the compensations of weakness as easily which could prevent them from laying you up again. Also, you have to use a neutral grip for all of your exercises, at least until you develop the strength and stamina in your wrist extensors needed.
    Medial elbow pain is referred to as golfer's elbow. This comes from an inflammation of the flexor muscles in your forearms. I see this happen most often as a result of doing chin-ups or other upper body pulling exercises where the back, rhomboids or biceps are simply not strong enough to complete the rep. Once they fatigue, the forearms attempt to kick in to help and overuse, overload and an inability to control the eccentric portion of the reps eventually taxes the muscles beyond their limits.
    Again, here you want to be sure you lighten the loads if needed to enable your muscles to stay in control of the weight and not shift the forces to the forearms ill equipped to handle them. Likewise, you'll want to keep your wrists in neutral for all exercises here as well.
    If you find that aches and pains are keeping you from seeing your best gains in the gym then it's time you head to athleanx.com and check out the physical therapist created workout program that today's top pro athletes are using to stay game ready all year round.

      What problem you have tennis elbow or golfers elbow? ...actually I have been suffering with golfers for last 1.5 yrs.. Went to different physiotherapist, ortho... But it didn't work.. So i decided to continue my workout.. This year pain increased.. So i decided to go on rest... I'm on rest for last 70 days...

      @@The__tarun___sharma "Golfers elbow" is caused in golf players when they throw the club head down at the ball with their right arm rather than pulling the club through with the left arm and trunk. ( opposite for left handed golfers). If your golfers elbow has actually been caused by playing golf you will have a bad slice on your drive. Your golf drive will be "throwing over the top" - like cutting wood. To fix find a good golf coach or look up on you tube. There are many great golfing channels.
      Ive seen a top golfer stand on his left foot and hit the ball over 200m. The distance a golf ball will travel is mostly dependant on the accuracy which it has been hit. As a golfer I rarely see anyone who doesnt swing fast enough. Top golfers dont swing much faster than high handicap players. They swing more accurately.
      The most effective treatment I have found for golfers/tennis elbow is ultrasound and rest. You need to find a physio who is into sports medicine and maybe plays golf.
      From my experience most physios and chiropractors are ignorant of sports injuries. I would avoid cortisone injections. They can make the injury worse.
      Orthopaedic surgeons will hand out advice based on how much money they could make out of you.

    This guy knows his stuff. I slowly injured myself doing a lot of open hand push-ups. My "physical therapist" friend goes, "Uh... maybe do less push-ups."
    After watching this video I did the stretches he suggests and changed to knuckle push-ups to straighten my wrist. Not only have I made a full recovery, I didn't have to stop working out and I even doubled my amount daily push-ups.
    I was seriously about to stop working out to heal, because my tennis elbow was so bad it would almost dislocate even during the night when sleeping. Every movement I made I had to be careful. Even scratching my face. I did this for months because I didn't want to stop working out. I'm beyond grateful for him putting this video online.
    Thank you AthleanX man!

    Thank you. I would summarize the main points as: 1. Apply ice initially; 2. The problem originates in the wrists, not the elbows; 3. Keeping a neutral or straight wrist during weigh training will help. I would add that the fast reps that Jeff typically advocates make it more difficult to control or monitor wrist position, so a superslow routine might be better both for this problem and other problems.

    My elbow pain is neither on the inside nor outside, but directly in the middle on the underside, immediately behind the elbow. I only really feel it when I do overhead dumbbell or barbell extensions for triceps, but in the last few weeks the area is tender in general and hurts when I rub it.

    • @DaLeadBull
      @DaLeadBull 8 лет назад +48

      +Ozzah I have the same exact type of pain. I think what's wrong in our case is a strained ligament. In my case, I think it happened when I went heavy on single arm overhead tricep extensions. It probably just take a lot of time and rest to heal fully but I keep working out on it which is increasing the healing time.

    • @Ozzah
      @Ozzah 8 лет назад +19

      DaLeadBull FYI I went to the physio about mine and apparently my elbow joint is very stiff. Like if your holding your hand straight out as though you're holding a beer, you should be able to rotate your elbow around without moving your hand AND without moving your shoulder. I have very little elbow movement in both arms, and he reckons that's the problem.

    • @DaLeadBull
      @DaLeadBull 8 лет назад +14

      +Ozzah Thanks man. I'm glad u might have found the problem. In my case, I'm pretty sure its a strained tendon or ligament since I first felt the strain during a heavy lift and its been a nagging problem. I recently pushed hard on it and had some inflammation which further indicates a strain. I actually read that inflammation is a sign of healing so I'm hoping it gets better soon.

    My chosen “profession” I guess I can call it, is a cashier at a local grocery store and while this video is helping me tremendously, it’s also confirming what a manager had already told me about maintaining a neutral wrist position to avoid injury. She mentioned it because she noticed I had a bad form, not because of my elbow pain so that’s where this video comes in to help me learn more.
    This and any further videos I watch on this topic will hopefully let me avoid further injury and make a full recovery without having to deal with any paperwork involved with doctor visits.

    I thought my elbow (lateral epicondylitis) pain was caused from weak wrist muscles; instead it was simply tightness in my triceps which I overlooked for awhile. My suggestion to you is foam roll/massage/stretch both the muscles below and above the elbow before you seek professional help. As Jeff said, the problem is most likely away from the elbow to begin with. Anyway, my elbow pain was relieved after i foam rolled my triceps for a few days (along with my wrists and biceps as well; after all we all have different muscle tightness and your pain may be caused by any of these muscle groups).

    Hey Jeff!
    What if the inner elbow pain only happens when you're doing some sort of push exercise (like push ups, bench press, dips and also a few tricep exercises)? I've made sure my problem is not bad form and I've had medial epicondylites diagnosed and treated by a phisicaltherapist for months and I was good but the pain is starting again and I don't want to go back and stop my chest/tricep workouts for months anymore... Any tips/help would be awsome! Thanks.

      Overhead tri hurts my current injury too much, but bent over triceps extensions do not. I'm going to listen to my Dr and take 10 days off, but I'll start w/ bent over for a few weeks before I try going back to overhead, they seem to be pretty rough for lots of us w/ this problem.

    I can't find hardly any info about elbow point pain. I don't have tennis or golfers elbow. I have bad pain towards full extension or contraction of my tricep in the point of my elbow only. No one seems to address it. Old hockey injury in which the bone was chipped and grew to the point that I had surgery to taper and round the elbow point. Six years later its really painful again. Tricep exercises and now bench press are increasingly difficult. Thanks

    • @tigerbend1964
      @tigerbend1964 7 лет назад +1

      ryangriff12 yeah, but the tendons and all from one of your arms will be a little weaker then the other, even if you can lift equal weight with both arms. Plus check your form on all of your exercises. I had to do that too and now I see that I did seriously overuse the lower muscle of my forearm leading to a golfer's elbow

    • @merlinquezada7570
      @merlinquezada7570 7 лет назад +1

      thats why, youre a righty and when you do rows and pulls your right arm its more, lets say "skilled" when it comes to do the movement plus its easier for your brain to use the muscles, tendons etc as a single unit. and then theres your left hand behind the power curve trying to compensate (as jeff said) using stuff that don't need to be used or using them excessively.

Well anyways just stop what you're doing. Now I'm recovered im might start working tomorrow. Idk what you have your problem with your elbow you might have pain the outside but still stop the weights and exercise. Having a higher testosterone while undergoing puberty means the pituitary gland will act more which will increase the activity of growth hormones. This will actually increase their height. However, once a person finishes puberty (usually during the late teens to early twenties) increasing testing will no longer increase height as one's bones and ligaments and such will no longer be able to grow very much.
