- "The Cranberries - Zombie" is a powerful song with a compelling message and an iconic music video to match.
The song, released in 1994 by the Irish rock band The Cranberries, addresses the violence and political unrest in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Written by the band's lead singer Dolores O'Riordan, "Zombie" is a protest song that expresses frustration and sorrow over the loss of innocent lives due to the conflict. The lyrics vividly depict the devastating impact of violence, with references to bombings and the haunting refrain "What's in your head, in your head, zombie?"
Accompanied by raw and emotional vocals from O'Riordan, the song's driving rhythm and intense guitar riffs create a sense of urgency and defiance, capturing the tumultuous atmosphere of the time.
The music video for "Zombie" complements the song's message with striking imagery. Directed by Samuel Bayer, the video features black and white footage of the band performing interspersed with scenes of conflict and destruction, including footage of a British soldier and a child holding a toy gun. The juxtaposition of the band's impassioned performance with images of violence and tragedy enhances the song's impact and reinforces its themes of sorrow and defiance.
Overall, "The Cranberries - Zombie" is a poignant and powerful song that continues to resonate with audiences for its emotional depth, social commentary, and memorable musicality.

As you probably know, Ireland had been fighting for its independence from England for decades. In March of 1993, a bomb was detonated in the town of Warrington, England, that had been left in a trash receptacle on one of the city’s streets, resulting in the death of a 3-year old and a 12-year old child. This tragic incident, combined with the decades-long ongoing conflict between England and Ireland (Delores O’Riordan’s native country), inspired her to write “Zombie”. If memory serves, she died in 2018 as a result of a drowning accident. One of the most unique and best vocalists ever. RIP Delores O’Riordan 🕊️🕊️😇🙏Peace my brother ✌🏾
Ireland not Scotland
@@pepiblanco Yep, my bad . But I had it correct in the beginning, and I don’t know what possessed me to write Scotland after that. Sorry about that. Ireland, not Scotland 🫡🇮🇪
@@TommyLMason all good. Kind of figured you knew what this song is really about. Lots of people sadly don't. BTW, I'm not Irish. Sentiment is still there. Be well
@@pepiblanco Same here, my friend. Not Irish, but the sentiment is definitely still there. ✌️
Edit: Corrected my mistake in my original comment.
Your first sentence is misleading. The Republic of Ireland (which is most of the island of Ireland) has been fully independent from England for a very long time. The problem is Northern Ireland. Even then, about half of the population of N.I. are loyal to England. The fight was really the terrorist war waged by the IRA. The Cranberries, being from the Republic, are basically just spectators of the fighting. It isn't their war. They don't take sides in the song.
Dolores was going to sing this song with Bad Wolves she tragically passed away the same day they were going to record it. Bad wolves went on and recorded and released it with all the proceeds donated to her children. R.I.P. Dolores
written by the lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan, about the young victims of a bombing in Warrington, England, during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
This song is as relevant today as it was during the troubles.
This song does have so much power. It's timeless. RIP Dolores, what a talent and a beautiful soul.
No phones in that crowd. The good, old days.
Hi, I love your reactions! 😃Amazing band, Dolores was one of a kind, so talented! Her style of signing in certain parts is called "keening", an Irish way of signing for funerals. You can find more incredible songs like : “Linger”, “Ode to my family”, “Dreams”. see you next time, cheers
Absolutely phenomenal a masterpiece and a No1 hit in 26 countries, great reaction thanks 🙏
Yup. Still gives me the chills.
NE, you "got" this song from the very start! The best and most visceral response to it that I ever seen. Slainte!!
"the drummer is killing it!" ... < yeah! the drums sounds like gun-shots on purpouse! :-/
I love that you did both versions! Thank you so much!!
Loved your take: when will it end? When indeed. People always want to know, whose side are you on? Let's all be on the side of innocent men, women and children dying in someone else's war.
Very good reaction, good job, it's nice to see there are some reactors that care and have a brain.
I appreciate that
A searingly emotional song, thanks for the reaction to a truly amazing track 🎼🎵🎵🎶🎶❤️⚠️🚸⚠️
She looked so fantastic in gold❤
Another beautiful soul and powerful voice gonna way too soon. Great reaction
She also utilized a vocal technique known as “keening” which is a traditional Irish form for mourning the dead.
you are so wise bro.. the more you know the less you know -- as we understand things the more questions we have to discover. This song in particular, because of my family, makes me piss tears almost every time. She's spitting wisdom in this one bro
She was from Northern Ireland and was singing about the Catholic-Protestant war in Northern Ireland in the 1990’s.
She is from limerick..!!!
Great reaction video. This song is iconic from that time. Loved your appreciation of her voice and the amazing Drummer!
The song was written in 1993, 5 years before in 1998 the „Good Friday Agreement“ was signed that brought a brittle peace to the region, that has been lasting now for more than a quarter of a century.
Echoes of the artillery barrage and automatic weapons fire from the 1916 Easter Rising, and the firing squads thereafter, kept ringing in everyone's ears.
The kids were golden too! The issue was lighting. Back in the day they put more light on the kids and that changed the looks
U have a keen ear & open heart makes for a great reaction ❤️
Check out the English Wikipedia article "The Troubles" for more information on the civil war in Northern Ireland. The Troubles have been going on for longer than since 1916. That was just the latest bout of fighting. R.I.P. Dolores O'Riordan and your wonderful voice.
great reaction
both versions yeah
RIP Dolores 😢
M8 this is a very heavy song About the IRA , and bombing in 1993 where the life of two Young boys were taken. The woman singing was also An activist against all violence and war crimes happening in times when Ireland was critical.
Also relevant these days as innocent kids are dying for example in Gaza in a war they did not choose for...
Thanks for reaction video.
Would really like to meet you one Day, the way you 'feel" songs is really interesting me.
Happy to come in first. What an amazing group and reaction. I love watching your reactions. A very sad song about children being killed in England during the Irish Republican Army wartime.
As an Australian with Irish and English heritage, we always knew about the troubles. We grew up seeing it on the news all the time and I remember when two Australian men were shot in Amsterdam by the IRA in front of their wives in the 80’s as they had been mistaken for off duty British soldiers. Most people lost any sympathy with the IRA when they just indiscriminately planted bombs and killed innocents. It was truly disgusting.
yooo you need to do 115 - Elena siegman, her voice is so angelic but yet so powerful, the song is used in the black ops zombies soundtrack!!
💟R.I.P. Dolores O'Riordan
To quote Billy Joel; only the good die young. And,,,,, she was so good.😢
"Spiritbox - Circle With Me" is my suggestion.
Great reaction by the way, your energy is great ♥
Yes they too now know occupation!
Always do the official video, the quality of sound is always better
No war but the Class War brother. Peace and love to you and yours.
YOU are awesome
Great reaction bro, when you get time please research the meaning behind this song as it has a very very sad story to it.
also when you get time would you please react to the cover of this song by a band called bad wolves (must be the music video) again there is a really sad story to the cover version aswell.

And that is why Ireland is supporting Gaza, they know!
Well I don’t know about that,it was written about an IRA car bomb in Warrington,England that killed two schoolchildren….here’s what Delores said about why she wrote the song. “There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin -- that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken,'" O'Riordan told Songwriting Magazine. "We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension."
She told Vox magazine in 1994 that the song was written in part as a mechanism to grapple with her identity as an Irish citizen that did not support the actions of the IRA.
"The IRA are not me. I'm not the IRA. The Cranberries are not the IRA. My family are not. ... When it says in the song, 'It's not me, it's not my family,' that's what I'm saying. It's not Ireland".
What a ridiculous comment!
In this case she is signing about the catholic and protestant religion war going on since 1916 ...great reaction
Please set a bad word version of Zombie dedication to Delores
Great song!! You shold react to the best rapper in spanish called "Canserbero"...you will not regret!

is this man blind or why has he no intention to watch the videos he is "reacting"?
surely your reacting to the song, not the video tsk
Pick some simple meaning songs that you will understand. You may not understand what is going on but you never listen to the lyrics ( I think you don't understand them) but you don't watch the video. Instead you pretend to be a head banging, grunting rocker.
Absolutely ruined this reaction with your ridiculous behaviour and singing over the Artist???
