  • www.safetyvideos.com/Workplace... This training video will teach healthcare workers about how to reduce workplace violence. Unfortunately patients can someimes be combative, or physically or verbally abuse healthcare staff such as doctors, nurse, or nursing home attendants. Preventing workplace violence is of utmost importance. This video teaches healthcare employees what to watch out for and how to avoid workplace violence situations.

I left nursing due to the attacks from other nurses, and health "care" workers with a grade 10 education but lots of seniority. I did not leave nursing because of attacks from patients. But it's been revealed to me that the situation is not likely to change, at least in nursing, because they're making a fortune in tuition. Two out of three new grads leave nursing before the end of their second year on the job due to the bullying. But they have already paid their tuition. Meanwhile there are hordes of people "competing" to get into nursing programs who will pay yet more tuition, and then 60% will leave nursing before the end of their first year on the job because of the bullying. That's why the situation is not improving. Abusers have just learned to hide it better. For example my "trainer" would laugh very loudly going into the elevator, but as soon as we were alone in there she would launch a verbal assault so aggressive she would leave her saliva on my face. But as soon as the elevator doors opened she would start laughing loudly again. Meanwhile I would be in the back of the elevator shaking and wiping her spit off my face. Abusers are well protected by the unions, and there is an enormous amount of revenue to be made from nurses paying their tuition and then leaving nursing. Interestingly, of the nurses who stay, over half are working under the influence of something legal or otherwise. They may be working on your loved one.

@@SammiHoliday Part 1 (Sorry, actually trying to help you out here.)
I left nursing a few years ago now, after my car went belly up, which meant my small nursing home care business went belly up too. I just couldn't bring myself to return to nursing in facilities where the abuse is the worst. I'm sure you're probably already aware of the concerning topics (capitalized) in B.C. health care but:
      - An average of once per day, I hear from our clients, reports of blatant RACISM at the local hospital. I believe they're true because I witnessed that mentality when I worked there. However, I don't believe this starts at the hospital, but rather racists are allowed to lead training programs, and racists are allowed into programs. A university in northern B.C. is notorious for allowing people they don't like, reportedly non-caucasian single mothers, to go through the entire four-year nursing program, only to fail them in one class in the last semester and not allow them to repeat that class. Thus leaving these poor young women with the debt, and no way to repay it.
      www.change.org/p/hon-john-horgan-premier-of-british-columbia-grant-tetyana-melnychuk-her-bachelor-of-science-in-nursing-degree-which-unbc-withheld-through-discrimination-and-abuse
      - Part of the problem is the lack of EDUCATION in at least one field, which is another reason I left nursing. People are starting to document online now the sentiment that the majority of nursing courses are "fluff" or "busy work", and I concur. There are so many examples of this and my other points, I'll list some of the links in a separate reply. Canada follows the U.S. in much of its health care training programs, and NP diploma mills are becoming very common there as well as in Canada. You can become an RN & an NP in three years, or an NP in two years without ever having gone through any nursing program. And now that some NPs are killing people, and doing things like super-gluing rocks into people's faces, some people are taking notice. I myself have dealt with RNs & NPs that were completely clueless about basics. And I have gone to nursing classes that began with the nurse instructor saying "You will all pass...this is what you say on the test, because that's regulation, and this is what you do in real life". The entire class of (B.C.) Health Authority nurses then left the class fully intent on not following regulation and thereby putting patients at risk - because it was cheaper. I later learned that the Health Authority quietly supported it. This same Health Authority was responsible for deciding whether or not I would be allowed a business license based on whether or not I was following regulation, which I was. I naively assumed that management and an NP at the private nursing business I worked for intended to follow regulation. However, first I was lied to, then they tried to force me, then all promises made upon hiring were null and void. They had received documentation from the Health Authority that was almost a decade old, and the regulation had been changed in the last few years. But they chose to ignore the current copy of the regulation which I (politely) showed them.
      - Which raises the issue of ACCOUNTABILITY. I suffered huge consequences for things like following infection control protocol, which my "trainer" did not understand and so ignored, and followed her own very creative biological theories. By the time she had finished loudly declaring her theories for not even putting on gloves, I had donned my PPE, as the big, bright neon pink sign said was required. Management was told, "You tell her not to do something and she does it anyway". When I mentioned this to a coworker who was very well informed about the UNIONS, he said that "...Short of getting caught red-handed attempting to kill a patient, they can't be fired". From what I've seen, this is true. After doing what management had said to deal with the bullying, which only made it worse, management said there was nothing they could do. It's also noteworthy, that nurses are self-governing, which means they're not really accountable to anyone but other poorly educated, unaccountable nurses. You might want to research the phrase "Nurses eat their young". It describes the abuse that is the real cause of the nursing shortage, and nurses really are a force to be reckoned with. Physicians can suffer huge consequences for even speaking negatively of them.
      - Then there's the issue of patient ABUSE in facilities both public and private. During a nursing program practicum at a private facility, we witnessed physical abuse of patients. We were told, "You're not the nursing police, you're nursing students!". In a B.C. hospital, first I was yelled at for answering call bells, then I was yelled at for not answering them. When I asked what the guidelines were, I was told by a nurse to only answer the bells of patients who were fall risks AND their family was likely to sue. There were only two patients on that unit who "qualified". So the patients who would receive nursing care really were outnumbered by the angry nurses.
      - Then there's nurses (and reportedly other health care workers) "diverting" drugs from patients and WORKING UNDER THE INFLUENCE. As far as I know, nothing was done about the situations I witnessed, and those nurses are still practicing (after cheating on their exams).
But don't take my word for it, see links in Part 2 for other sources.
      :)

      P.S.:
      - I actually left my first accelerated BScN program due to the racism and lack of accountability. I thought I must be seeing the regional culture in the nursing program. (See links in part 2)
      - I also think part of the reason most of the public is unaware of these issues in health care is because no recording is allowed in hospitals. And rightly so, for the protection of the patients. Whereas there is much more awareness of the shortcomings of the police, because the public can easily film them on their phone at practically any time.

Nurses are nothing but glorified fast food workers.. most nurses most of them are cold and uncaring of some one in pain..and that just escalates the anger.. and is not being treated right. But like food workers there are so many people goin for the job the company doesn't care if you leave they will save on insurance and benefits, when a new employee has to go through the months waiting for their benefits to kick in.. but they quit before you reach that point.. makes a chain of not paying for benefits so you may want to stop blaming the patient and start looking at the way you care for people and your personality during the job.. because a grumpy nurse can cause himself or her beef from the patient.. and the company laughing because you will quit and never do they have to pay for benefits. . Save them money is music to the owners ears.. just like working at burger king.
