Are you using light brown sugar or dark brown sugar? Also is bicarbonate the same as baking powder or baking soda? I'm from the USA I never heard of it before

Thank you Maria... you can reduce the amount of sugar but this will modify the batter. Sugar plays an important role in Mudcake recipe. She is the League, the leavens, the flavour, the colour, the density, etc....

For the molasses you can put as much you want Linda. Tablespoons is fine ;)
