- This video showcases Modern Sonic Adventure 2: The Speed and Mech Trial Update. The update for the Sonic Hacking Contest 2023 includes a MASSIVE overhaul. No more damn remakes. They need to be held accountable for making actual sequels with some substance to them instead of living life on easy mode and just taking an existing idea, adding a different interpretation of the cutscenes and gameplay and updating the graphics. There is far FAR too many remakes now and we have to push forward again in the direction of originality. Not everything needs to be remade. Sometimes it's honestly just an excuse for laziness on the developers part.

I talked to the developers of the project alot to get their advice on the stages that changed the most since last build. I even got some custom files not found on the gamebanana page, like moving Blimps in Radical Highway and Escalators in Eternal Engine!! Hoppy really wanted me to do Iron gate as the A rank is 35,000 points.. lol anyways put alot of effort into this video, enjoy!
And yes the board tricks animations don't play so nicely ;p

What stands out the most to me, is the fact that their quills actually blow in the wind properly. Sonic and shadows movements also have more character. Like how shadow looks like hes actually pushing himself, instead of the typical effortless movement on a treadmill.

Metal Harbor in this "Modern" game made it feel like a playground rather than straight out linear stage. Really impressive!
They actually made it look like it made more sense too, the structures at the start actually being built on a form of land instead of randomly in the water
This just feels like an brand new game and that remix of final chase was really good and I can't wait too see what's going to be like when it's fully completed and I love that he added convery belts in eternal engine

Honestly with a little more time to cook this has a lot of potential! I love little details like Shadow's gloves and shoes glowing, how ramming into a wall makes you 2D, or Shadows movement animations. I feel like the board animations are a bit stiff and the shadows could be a bit more dynamic (not asking for over the top lighting but a lot of well lit areas look a little flat or plastic-ey), and the menu could deal with a bit of stylization as they also look a bit too smooth.
But for a fan version of this game it looks phenomenal so far and honestly if they keep improving it and whatnot, we could have something awesome on our hands

Holy moly the character models are hands down literal perfection. And the voices -- are they fanmade or something? Sounds a lot like the original cast. If the levels, cutscenes and effects were touched up visually too I'd seriously pay for this.
Theres potential for ai voices too.

While the voice acting needs some work, it is actually not bad at all! But goodness gracious... They poured quite the effort and love into this. This makes me crave a remake even more now.
Voice acting absolutely needs work. Sonic's voice switches from Jason to Ryan to a Ryan impression.
Always wanted to get into voice acting... and this has been a favorite game of mine since i was 7!
Honestly, Shadow's voice has never been as good as when David Humphrey voiced him, IMO. Everyone afterwards is trying too hard to be 'cool and dark' while Brian just had this nice relaxed energy about how he did it. It wasn't edgy, it was confident.

I thought this would be just a modern looking texture pack, but even the maps have had subtle changes. This really does look like a remastered version of Sonic Adventure 2 if it was released in the year 2023.

giving shadow the bounce braclet is probably my favorite change here. such a good tool for speed and it just makes sonic stages 1000* better.

I don’t think SEGA realizes how much money they would make if they remade this game, or at the very least remastered it. Id rather this over something like Colors (even though I suck at SA2)

Tbh I think the reason they remastered colors is because it was locked to the wii.
They've already remastered sa2. Besides, Colours is a better game.

Modders: changes game
Overtime: this is game changing.
This is so much goddamn fun, the increased acceleration and speed of Sonic and Shadow takes a bit of getting used to but it's so satisfying. The additional areas and segments are super cool and always a fun surprise when you find one, reminds me of how Mania would remix old zones with some of the original stage design but they'd throw in a new area you'd never seen before. The altered textures in Radical Highway adding text to highlight Shadow's internal struggle is insanely cool as well, I love to see psychological elements like that.
Entering MSA2 into the actual contest side of the Sonic Hacking Contest once it's finished would hardly be fair lol, it would be a shoo-in for the 3D category like how Hellfire Saga is for the Retro category.

This is why Sega doesn't need to remake the Adventure games. The fans are more than capable of making a modern HD Sonic Adventure experience, meanwhile Sega should just focus on new games! This fan-project is AMAZING! And P06 is awesome too!

That's the reason why I just want a PC Port for Unleashed and not a remake like Colors Ultimate. If the fans could remaster Sonic 1, CD, 2, 3 and Knuckles, Adventure 1, Adventure 2, Heroes, 06, Colors Ultimate, Generations, Forces and Frontiers by themselves, they'd obviously manage to remaster Unleashed if there was a PC Port.

truly what city escape needed: even more of a cacophony of sounds
I like the new branching paths and areas. It widens exploration for the linear speed stages a little bit without damaging the original stage layout. I especially like the new added pre section for Metal Harbor. Definitely a nice booster for a criminally short stage.
Even the music has been changed in a very discreet manner, keeping what Jun Senoue had in mind while adding some flair to it. Banger

I think the music tracks as the original are fine. They are banging as they are : city escape, white jungle, etc. I don’t think they should be tampered with. Sonic music is the only thing that’s shouldn’t be touched - Jun Seoune, Crush40, etc.
Ye also some of the music you can barley hear due to the sfx being loud asf. Especially in city escape where there’s no lyrics

I had the Music at 100%, SFX and voices at 80%, when all 3 were recommended at 100%. but yes I agree sound balancing is pretty wack. I think SA2 likes to stack sounds so when alot's on screen it goes crazy.

My only gripe is audio mixing, I wish I could hear more of the music under all of the new sound effects, but pretty impressive mod nonetheless!
I feel like the music changes and the voice acting are my biggest gripes, but this project is seriously impressive!
Everyone screaming about Shadow and Sonic, we aint gonna sit here and overlook how cool the stages of Tails and Eggman stages look like. Also, how they improved there mechanics and there movement.
This is looking really impressive so far! The thing that stands out the most to me is the audio mixing. I can actually hear their voices now!

I played this game a lot back in the day. You might be one of the first players I've seen on here who was leagues ahead of me at my peak. I've vowed to play this game again at some point and I'm gonna play it with this mod.

That running animation/model for Sonic is CLEAN. I love how you can see the quills fold back gradually as he speeds up until he's basically a bullet.
This gotta be the COOLEST thing I've seen in years! Amazing work! I wish I could play this right now! Altough I have to ask.....why are some of Tails' and Eggman's stages reversed? Iron Gate and Hidden Base are correct, but Eternal Engine and Mission Street were Tails Stages, and Lost Colony was an Eggman stage.....just curious.

What happened to the new "prison break" section at the beginning of Metal Harbor from last years SHC 2022!? That was my favorite part of the modern SA2 mod!!
Aside from the already astounding quality this has for a mod, it also looks so fun! Truly a love letter to one of the objectively best games of it's time. Love to see it!

This is the definitive way to play SA2, this is fantastic. I like the sounds effects and the stage layout changes that imo add more flow to the levels. More speed the better. One question though who is voicing tails? Is that heroes tails?
You guys should do Sonic DX directors cut if you haven’t already! I would love to see some updated mods with the modern Sonic art style added to it! Even 06’s style would be cool! This is amazing!

The voice acting in this project is absolutely impeccable! I love how faithfully each actor has portrayed their role (also, tails kinda sounds like a mix of SA2 Tails and Jimmy Neutron, which is really charming lol). Very amazing remake overall!!
i mean yeah looks good, and kinda dig the style of Metal Harbor a bit, but i dunno about stages like White Jungle and so on, like the original was long enough this is like twice as long as the original version, which its not a bad thing since i saw that you got to the goal ring with 6 mins to spare.
But my gripe with extending stages this way is that while a exprienced player will get a kick out of this, a more less experienced one might get a bit overwhelm by the sheer size of the stage and complexity, again its not a bad thing but i think it needs to be balanced out just right because it can be a double edged sword that could make stages way too long and can end up feeling a tad bit tedious to complete them, or just like it has unnecessary fluff to make them "new" when its just a few branching paths that doesnt change the style of the stage enough to be worth going thought them, like again as a experienced player i can understand the appeal and how impressive this is, but it might be a tad bit too much for casual ones.
Looks amazing. Definitely some little things that need polishing but overall it looks like a new game

Instincts I'd long thought forgotten activated every time Shadow jumped in space. A rush of cold every time he left the ground as I knew if I had tried that. I would have definitely failed.

City escape: Sonic being a teenager for 2 minutes straight
I just realized how many possible deaths and accidents sonic may have caused with his board
So, for city escape, I noticed that you increased Sonic's speed, but didn't change the level design to compensate. The specific instance I noticed was the second downhill section; the way that section is supposed to go is you get the trick off the ramp, hit the speedboosters into the next ramp at the 90 degree turn, get the trick off that which gives you the electric shield, hit the speedbooster and get the trick off the next ramp, which throws you through a loop of rings and launches you directly into the bounce pad to get you up the wall in the next section, which gets you a nice sum of rings and saves you a bit of slow platforming and dealing with some enemies if you miss it.
In your version, hitting the second trick ramp instead _overshoots you past the third one,_ which forces you to contend with the enemies hitting the tricks was supposed to jump you past, and then Sonic... runs up the wall to get up there quickly? Okay, can Sonic run up EVERY wall, or just that one? Is that a powerup he gets, maybe replacing the magic gloves? How is the player supposed to intuit that that's an option? Shit, have you ALWAYS been able to run up that wall? I literally never tried running face-first into a sheer wall since, ya know.
Also, I'm not sure if "Faster" is the direction I would have taken the mech stages. Like, on Mission street, the whole point of the first collapsing road section is to force you to divert and pick up the booster powerup; then on subsequent playthroughs, if your timing is good, you can use the booster to take the faster upper route. But if you're fast enough to just _make it across there,_ before the road collapses, then it's possible that you never get the booster powerup and get stuck later in the level (Or later in another level).
Other than that, this still needs some polish, but looks pretty cool.
