By far my favorite Santigold track. Fun fact: That is ex-pro snowboarder Trevor Andrew riding shotgun in the drive-by scene. He and Santi dated and when he got injured in 2004 he started making beats on Santi's equipment. He rapped over a few and Santi sent off his demo to her reps in the industry and rapper "Trouble Andrew" was born.
Very cool did he make those reggae beats fot Santi?

Dude! I just turned 42 and most modern artists are not my thing, not saying they are not talented, but just not for me. Santigold makes great pop, electronic, hip-hop that is reminiscent to what seems to be missing with most modern music.

This video is full of imagery and cultural/historical references. The attire of this family, sitting down to a radioactive and hormone-enhanced dinner somewhere in America is strongly evocative of the white-washed, feel good years of the 1950's. The milkman is another image drawn from that era, symbolizing the collateral damage of America's capitalist war-mongering that has finally come home to roost. Amazingly, everyone survives except the milkman, while the house continues to burn from the top down.

This is the first time I listen to this song and I totally fell in love with it.
That's a lot of her songs in general, they make me feel that way, and that's why she's one of my favorite artists. There are certain singers and groups where they are so good I watch all their videos, performances, and would see them in concert, or plan to. Santigold is special to me, and special period.
The video and music are brilliant ways to criticize the status quo in America (I'm not American btw). She questions whether your food is safe (though it comes dangerously close to anti-GMO bs), your views of beauty and cosmetics, your safety, but most importantly, she criticizes the way you deal with your issues. Basically she's saying that you're ignoring all these issues because they don't fit in your perfect portrait of things. Someone getting shot is apparently normalized to such an extent that almost no-one, not even the victim in this video, seems genuinely concerned with it.

I know, I loved the song already. However, the video is pure gold (if your don't mind the pun). I feel violence is very normalized in America (I'm an 'American' btw ), I love how she draws attention to these issues. 3:35 makes me think of the white house, so there could be a commentary about the institution of America in general, and not just the individual and their family units.

Very intricate and well-done video, it really paints a candid picture of modern society, particularly the part where the milkman is dying from being shot, only to have the kid excitedly pull out his phone and start to take photos of the scene that's unravelling right before their very eyes.

For anyone reading this going through tough times, obstacles, negative thoughts, I feel this needs to be said. Spirits are Real. Keep Living, keep supporting the Spirits of Life, Spirit of Life (God Almighty) gives rise to a Selfless Spirit. A Selfless Spirit gives rise to Salvation. that is being concerned with the well being of other people Mentally, Physically, and Spiritually. To not hand each other over into developing a rebellious spirit against GOD. To know that we as the Living Man are responsible for each other during this journey of Life, always encouraging and compassionate, reflecting what Love looks like, protecting each other from the true enemy. Committed to the welfare of other people which God Almighty selflessly continues to give to the Living Man, which I feel is another opportunity to get it right. Allowing the Spirits of Life to develop within Mankind will change us for the better. Staying fully committed to protecting each other which I believe brings Salvation and Redemption, which can and will lead people out of unnecessary debt, building Life up solidly. There is no perversion or confusion about those attributes. The spirits of darkness can not hurt you, although following their self destructive ways is way I believe, they are able to hijack the Living Man. Their perverted appearance reflects their perverted spirit which they are aware of to use to frighten or intimidate those who are growing close to GOD Almighty. (spirits of darkness trying to strip The Living Man of what GOD created The Living Man to be, to stop the Living Man from building a relationship with GOD Almighty, and to use The Living Man for it's own evil, selfish, and destructive intentions) When growing out of the indoctrinated ways the enemy crafted and trying to spread the message to others, the serpent will use distractions. Loud noises being the operative choice, fear, bombarding thoughts, causing doubt and intimidation are other ways the spirits of darkness use to keep your attention off of what it's afraid of. The spirits of darkness have no true power which is why they leach off of Life. Remember You are Alive and the source of your power is pure. spirits of darkness is a spirit of death (which is also it's source of power. Remember the perversion it uses is wicked. That spirit of death becomes a selfish spirit that will take advantage of others for it's own selfish gain, which lead people into bondage and Spiritual Rebellion. DO NOT LET THAT SERPENT STRIP YOU OF YOUR BIRTH RIGHT. I know and stand firm in my beliefs that the spirits of darkness will never prosper over the Spirits of Life because their plans can't be accomplished without leaching off of Life. Give that serpent zero room to breathe and give Spiritual Authority over God Almighty and the Spirits of Life because those attributes are too pure, precious, priceless, protective and powerful to used by spirits of darkness. They flee from it. dark spirits manipulate truth, taking advantage of what you lack in knowledge, cause unnecessary nonsense, chaos, hurt and pain in people's lives, so we as Living Man must develop a relationship with GOD Almighty and not allow those dark spirits to ensnare us into their evil, selfish, and Spirit stripping plans. Take a second to reflect on that statement. Before you're aware of their existence, they'll try to keep you distracted by following the ways of the world which wisdom in the Bible instructs people no to do (Romans 12: 2) They will want your focus on things pleasurable to flesh, self destructive to your Life and detrimental to your soul. They do this keep people distracted from their existence and distracted from the Goodness that is in the World. Betting on the fact their invisibility to Humans will lead people to believe they don't exist. These spirits are very real, to make matters worse they use that knowledge to their advantage. Their intention is spiritual bondage of the Living Man (Adam + Eve) (look up the definition of the Hebrew names) which is evil and selfish. Their intentions are to cause the Living Man to rebel against and be separated from GOD and the Spirits of Life, attempting to destroy Living Man's Life by indoctrinating self destructive behaviors from childhood. (Teaching Good As Bad, and, Bad as Good and People following those principles) The frustration is understandable but remember they do this in retaliation against GOD Almighty (Creator of the Universe, Selfless Spirit, and Salvation) During the process of Developing A Selfless Spirit, the spirits of darkness may try to harm you (Do not listen to any self harm tactics they say, don't not hurt anyone in retaliation i.e. damaging property or violence towards people or animals Ephesians 6:12) Read the Story of Moses and the Israelites. Pharaoh's attempt to go after the Israelites after They crossed the Red Sea is an example of why they operate the way they do. Everything the spirits of darkness say is an attempt to confuse, disrespect, disrupt, cause doubt and to slow down the process of what serpent is afraid of (Growing out of Spiritual bondage, but most importantly building a relationship with GOD Almighty and the Spirits of Life. The anger the serpent displays is the frustration and fear of The Living Man growing out of it's indoctrinated ways of the world and giving the spirits of darkness less and less room to move in your Life. The Spirits of Life (Inspiration from Above and Beyond this polluted planet) will always overcome the ways of the world. The Spirits of Life do not author confusion. spirits of darkness hijack the Living Man Mentally, Physically, but most importantly Spiritually to prevent themselves from going extinct which they know will happens when I happens. I believe the spirits of darkness were casted away in the first place to prevent those dark spirits from destroying what GOD Almighty created as a beautiful blessing. Those dark spirits have no respect for life, no foundation to support Life, willing to lie about their intentions to use the Living Man as a tool to rebel against the Creator and the Spirits of Life, which is written about in Genesis. The Living Man is ALREADY a reflection of GOD and the Spirits of Life, do not let the spirits of darkness try to strip away what GOD equipped the Living Man with aspects of The Creator's Spirit: Power, Love, and a Sound Mind (Reasoning Mind ) Luke 10:19, not feeding into the enemies of plans, schemes or plots to destroy your Life or my Life nor Rebel against God Almighty) (2 Timothy 1:7 )Those spirits are the enemies of Life, but They are already defeating themselves in the process which they also know to be true because they leach off of Life so Please do not give Spiritual Authority over to them, cast them behind you and Keep Living and keep making progress. No need to fight with those spirits although frustration is understandable and they deserve no favors. Keep Living to grow out of the frustration into Gratefulness, being saved from developing rebellious spirit, which is of the Serpent. The serpent and scorpions tactics are always the same. By following the ways of the world, which wisdom in the Bible instructs people not to do, that is a way the serpent uses people, if the serpent sees it can't use you, you become a threat to the serpent (Which is a Good Thing) That fear the serpent tries to instill in people if you become a threat or turn away from following the serpent, is it's reaction to what it knows it shouldn't do or have done, (Fear of Retaliation) be advised. We are already above developing those types of spirits. Please do not degrade yourself over a being that does not care about your life nor your soul.

This is just a musical autopsy on the keepers. When Santogold says 'Our house is burning down', she is referring to America (which is obvious in the hook because she outright says 'america'). The point that she is trying to get across is that America is crumbling.
The old woman who is 'stuck' is just one of the people who cab see it coming clearly, but does nothing about it and just sits there. When the woman stands up from the table and shows off her waistline, Santogold talks about fame, and how it can suck you in. She is explaining our fame isn't always the best thing, because it can be one of your enemies.

I think this is a critique of neoliberalism
This video is rich in a multiplicity of social commentaries. From a reading of gender and race politics, it also possible to read this as the exploitation of labor both affective and physical. Did anyone miss that the servant was a black woman? Not only this, but there is a moment where Santigold is sitting in the table and she mentions " I don't make no rules; no one even knows I'm here". From one perspective, you could say this is a criticism of transracial adoption in the context of colorblind politics where racially othered children in white families are made to assimilate to western, white values. The assimilation process eventually resulting in a washing out of their identity. I think the fact that the family got shot by black people in a drive by(and one white guy), while continuing about eating their dinner as if "nothing is happening" effectively demonstrates the way most, especially white Americans, treat issues of race nowadays. There are also elements of the ways the racialized white body is constructed and blackened, if you will, when you look of the wife as she gets up during the table scene... It may be suspect, but I don't think her accented lips and butt were arbitrary.Rather, it is a demonstration of this practice where blackness is flirted with by whites in a very selective form.That is to say, It's great to have a big ol ghetto booty( like Nicki minaj might say) and large lips even better if it's on a white face. Raising the red flag here that I am aware that a class reading would signify that this is a critic of upper-middle class whiteness, and not reflective entirely of lower class white people ( who do, however, still benefit from these constructions nonetheless).
