I've told one of my Portuguese friends on Facebook that I'm going to annoy her with my constant doubts and to deal with it 😂
She's been quite helpful so far. She's just pleasantly surprised someone's chosen to learn her mother tongue.
BTW, I'm still open for more exchange friends. So sure thing.

Great tips. I started learning portuguese to talk to Brazilians, and am now interested in learning european portuguese also. I used iTalki to find native brasileiros. I also used tandem. To be honest i was inundated by offers from Brazilians because the ratio of gringos learning portuguese to the other way around is so skewed in the native english speakers favour. Five years later i am still good friends with my language partner who lives in Santos.
My Killer Tip … Try exchanging WhatsApp audio messages. That way you can listen 2-3 times and make sure you understand before responding.

Just went to Portugal for a week for vacation and it was hit or miss to be honest. I managed to order Bifana in Lisbon and had a short conversation with the waiter who could understand everything I said. Then nobody understood me in Coimbra nor Aveiro. In Porto I was more lucky and when I was drunk I felt super comfortable and went on to speak Portuguese with my newfound friends, they were so surprised and happy!

thanks for another great video! I agree with the idea of getting out of your comfort zone, when I moved to Portugal I started volunteering to force me to (try to) communicate with people and then even joined a theatre project and got to speak a little Portuguese on stage. It has been hard to maintain speaking practice during the pandemic though :(

It's probably an incorrigible habit of mine but I always say 'peço desculpe' whenever someone corrects me after I make a mistake because I feel horrible for insulting their language.
And they feel bad for correcting me since they feel they're being mean for correcting me and I have to reassure them that no it's exactly what I want, strict corrections for even the tiniest of mistakes.
What do I do to prevent the awkwardness?

    • @TalktheStreets
