Karl did answer how he met Suzanne, he said.... "just at work" I think you laughed over it haha 🤣
Beautiful story! It was just so brief I forgot 😅🤪
@@MandyCaneLane 🤣🤭
@@MandyCaneLane It'd be interesting to know the details.
@@davidz3879 He explains in another episode -- karl impressed her with his video editing and she bought him a cup of vending machine coffee -- the rest is history
@Ann Other you forgot the follow up cup of got chocolate, karl is still up 40p
The wood metaphor is describing that the act of chopping the wood warms you up, then you burn it later and are warm again
Thank you 🤗
Yes, Trains have bathrooms.. even in Connecticut to New York.
11:47 That dance they animated is actually a nice inside joke for the original UK version of The Office. Ricky’s character, David Brent, did a dance just like that in an episode. It’s hilarious, you should definitely give it a look in.
I have to watch so many things, but The Office is quite high on that list!!
@@MandyCaneLane That should definitely be next IMO. If you like this show, The Office is a similar type of humour but in a different style of show (more like a “mock-umentary” style). It’s so cringe funny from the start, and the cast is absolutely brilliant. Especially Ricky and Martin Freeman (aka Bilbo Baggins from “The Hobbit”).
Also, as a different, more drama style show (still with plenty of cleverly written comedy throughout), try “Sherlock” as well, if you haven’t already seen it. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Holmes and Watson, respectively. It’s as perfect a show as I think you can possibly get!
He who cuts the wood up warms himself twice, once by the physical activity of chopping the wood, and then by burning it.
Thank you Ari! I didn't understand it! 🤗🤗🤗
What if he's chopping the wood months before he needs it (and it's hot weather during the chopping)?
@@thedukeofnuts Then He warms himself twice but he might get some cold water over him in-between warmings?
9:09 That's a wonderful "Oh God" there. 😁
😅
I love how you can ask Karl anything and it can derail so far from the subject :) Karl is someone it would never be boring to talk to
100% agreed!
We had one of those paintings at our house, my mum put it under the stairs because the painting would always survive the fires and my mum figured out the stairs wouldn't burn so we could escape.
Lmao! That is hilarious!!
Yeah, plenty of UK trains have toilets on them, apart from tiny regional ones. They're often not the nicest place in the world to relieve yourself, but they're always available.
Lmao, at least you have the option! 😅😅
Karl still lives with Suzanne. He has often said that he doesn't want to marry or have kids.
How can anyone say he's not a smart man.
This series is curated from about 1% of the overall audio from their radio show and podcasts. There were loads of monkey news segments and other segments as well. Many of the conversations seen in the Ricky gervais show actually went for much longer in the radio show.
These are from the podcasts/guides, not he radio show. That said, they did bring up a lot of the stories from their xfm days on the podcasts.
From the Wiki about the picture- "On 5 September 1985, the British tabloid newspaper The Sun reported that an Essex firefighter claimed that undamaged copies of the painting were frequently found amidst the ruins of burned houses. By the end of November, belief in the painting's curse was widespread enough that The Sun was organising mass bonfires of the paintings, sent in by readers"
Ricky never read "The Sun" 🤪
I love watching people slowly get Karl more and more. Your reactions are perfect, and I like learning the little things about Argentina here and there too
Thank you so much! 🤗🤗🌻
This is like a film version of a book that is XFM 104.9 shows .
Absolute joy those XFM shows bring .
The more you get to know the characters the more you love it!
I don't seem to ever get sick of this show, I watched it through both parents deaths and every hard time I've had, love it.
I wasn't actually watching it while they died, I mean the aftermath 😅
Lmao, I understood 😅🤭
@@Khqra
Oh, stop it. No one asked for anyone’s personal story, so no one should demand any particular response. Her response wasn’t even rude.
Great reaction as always. Ok so here's one...
As people have mentioned, Ricky and Steve, co-wrote The Office (UK version). Rick was an unknown at the time and starred in the lead role as David Brent.
Now, when he pitched the idea for the show to the BBC, rather than just go for fame, he told them that if he and Steve didn't get to make all the decisions on the shows production then he wasn't interested in doing it.
He didn't want other people interfering with his and Steve's idea.
Luckily the BBC agreed and they got full autonomy on the shows direction.
So, if you think back to the scene on this episode about a Camel being a Horse designed by a committee, Ricky there stated that if others got involved in the design it would destroy the idea.
The exact same philosophy he used when pitching The Office. So there ya go :)
And yes The Office and Extra's is really good stuff but you're gonna have a LOT of copyright issues trying to show those, so be very wary. The BBC are super strict.
Ahhh! Cool stuff, thank you Rusty!! 🤗🤗
Millions of people insist that two of each of the thousands of animals in the world were put on a boat in the Middle East - including kangaroos, koalas, penguins & polar bears!
Each to their own! 😅😅
Thats the worlds biggest question how did noah find a polar bear with out ot killing him in the middle of the current dat iraqi desert
A person who cuts wood and gets warm twice is referring to cutting the wood in the cold to physically getting warm in the act of exercise and secondly burning the wood
The animators must have had so much fun doing the whole series ... Paul "party animal" Parker's dance is a reference to an episode of The Office, were Rickys character 'David Brent' does the same dance to try to "impress" his work colleagues ... great video Mandy, agree with you about the food & touching things, does my head in
Right? This is just entertainment all around!
@@MandyCaneLane It's, almost, as if these were the blue print for Idiot Abroad ... so many of the topics they discuss sort of feature in the Idiot Abroad series ... what happened to your Argentinian team in the World Cup 😲, so unexpected !

@@steved6092 Yep. Like Karl ending up eating a knob at night.
Yes, youre right; Most UK trains have toilets (bathrooms) and have had for decades, though they're usually very small and not the kind of bathrooms you want to spend much time in!
Monkey News & Karl's Diary are brilliant!
Never get bored of this show helps my mental health I love the animation and I love these guys so much anyway
This show is all around amazing! 🙌🏻
I can't guarantee, but every train I've been on in Scotland has toilets. Most of the time it's these Hi-Tec reveal toilets where the wall slides away to reveal you if you've not pressed the button to lock it like a prize on a gameshow.
LMAO 😂😂😂
26:46 Stephen : How did you meet Suzanne?
Karl : At work
Stephen : Thank you.
For once a very brief answer to a very brief question. Easily missed Mandy. Love your work.
Thank you Dave 🤗
We have toilets on most intercity trains, the one that Karl would take from Manchester to London would have one. The trains that serve the local area don't usually have them however
Hmmm... interesting. Thank you James 🤗
14:24 the "elastic" sound of the hedgehog 😂
That saying you were talking about, how there's someone for everyone and the broken pieces that match and stuff... I guess each country has their own, where I grew up it was something that roughly translates to "every train has passangers" or something like that.
Regardless of how it's constructed, it's still garbage
The Sounder here in Pierce and King Counties, WA have bathrooms that sometimes have running water. They used to always have running water...but yeah.
He did answer it he said "at work “ 😊I had to rewind myself because I missed it too.great reaction beautiful lady 😘👍
Lmao, so brief yet so beautiful 🥺
27:12 Karl did answer, sometimes it pays to rewind 5 secs ;)
Stephen: You haven't answered the question we started with, how did you meet suzanne ?
Karl: Just at work.
Stephen: Thanks.
5 min. tangent for a 3 word answer :D
Lmao. Beautiful story though!
UK trains often have a lavatory --- which a while ago saw the most ridiculous innovation ever.
The electric door lock which works now and then and often it is difficult to know if it is locked or open -- leading to many many embarrassing stories. Someone saw the old style bolt lock that works 100% of the time and thought " How can we improve this system " --- by replacing it with a 50/50 gamble BRILLIANT.
😂😂😂
He did answer how he met Suzanne, you just missed it 😆
It was too brief then 😅😅
The dance is based on an iconic moment from The Office

Ricky Gervais is great at stand-up comedy as well. His comments & criticisms of society, politics, religion, "new women" etc. are hilarious.
Disagree what gives Ricky the right to judge ppl constantly on there health or there religion in atheism, as he has become what he apparently hates a preacher
@@shanefoy3720 It's useful & entertaining when he explains how ridiculous many religious claims are.

You should check out the UK Office if you get round to Patreon shows. Its only 14 episodes. The dance is from a famous scene in that. Helps the scene much more to know the characters and context than spoiling a big moment in it and seeing it standalone
Also: Extras.
Yep Mandy, that dance is part of UK History.
@@dupersuper1938 Yes, The Office & Extras are very good.
Is this another show? Or "extra" Office footage? 🙈😬
@@MandyCaneLane Extras is a different BBC sitcom, which also stars Ricky Gervais.
Fun fact: I believe the ‘Horse in the house’ story is actually the first story Karl ever told on radio. This was the story that made them realise ‘oh my god this man is hilarious’ and slowly got them to keep bringing him on radio to chat with them.
In An Idiot Abroad, s2 e5, Meet a Gorilla, Karl meets someone in South Africa who has a pet hippo that lives in their house.
Russell brand had him on before. 'going for a face rub' was with him
@@davidz3879 "Looks like Suzanne from the back" - - "--we can't use that" 😂
You're delightful, as always. So much fun. Thanks.
Thank you Walter! 🤗 'Delightful' is a lovely compliment to recieve! 🤗🌻
These are way before an idiot abroad. This was originally from a radio station slot that Ricky and Steve was on called XFM, Carl was given to them as their sound producer for the show and the rest is history, and thank god it happened lol, then years later they took some of the best bits and animated it for TV.
There is crossover, and in some of the later episodes of The Ricky Gervais Show Karl talks about his travels.
The Ricky Gervais Show was broadcast from 2010-2012. Some of it is based on previous conversations during their radio show. An Idiot Abroad was shown from 2010-2013.
Ricky's XFM slot started in 1998 where they found Karl. If you search on RUclips XFM S1E1 you will find it all unedited, apart from the music they had to play.
Karl is in the first season but not as much as the rest, he became part of the show in no time.
@@MrFalconhead yes, but what Mandy is watching, The Ricky Gervais Show animated series, is not the same as the XFM radio show. It’s animated from the Ricky Gervais Show podcast.
@@phueal Maybe it is a mix of everything for the animated series as Monkey News was from the XFM days, or maybe both still.
Some trains do have toilets here in the UK, alot of the longer distance overground lines do. Not many inner-city ones do.

There's toilets on pretty much all trains. One time when I was travelling back from London I had to sit on it all the way (except when people needed it) because there were no seats or standing room lol

Just at work.
He actually met her at the coffee machine. He had no money so she gave him 20p for a drink. I think she worked in sport reporting. There is very little online about her, no pics, no twitter or social media. Everyone wants to be introduced to this brave lady but she has forever been in stealth mode.

There is online hoax pics of her, and it's a member of the first uk popstars TV show band Hear'Say called Suzanne lol she's cute blond blue eyes and it's hilarious that people love Karl so much that they give him a fake cute looking Suzanne lol

Good reaction vid 😁 FYI he never did answer the question about which of Ricky or Steve he would save if on a sinking ship. I think they run out of Monkey News before the end of the first season 😆 Also, I'm pretty sure all these chats were recorded well before An Idiot Abroad happened.
I have exactly the same aversion to people people licking their fingers and touching stuff. In fact, the example I was going to give, you outlined exactly. I had friends over a few years ago, and we were playing Xbox. One of them was eating Doritos whilst watching us play. When it was his turn, he literally sucked every finger, thoroughly, even fingers that hadn't touched chips, and proceeds to pick up one of my controllers and get his drool all over it. Why doesn't it occur to people that that is disgusting? 😅🤢
I have no idea! Just get up and wash yo' damn hands! 😭
If I was in the boat situation, I think I'd take a chance and go it alone.
😮
Went to the bookstore today. Picked up a new book, “ Bowling Etiquette According to Mandy.” Riveting tome. Looking forward to second edition!

I don't know who loves Ricky Gervais the most out of you and me Mandy lol
Lmao, you can take Ricky, I love Karl's simpleness 😂😂😂
@@MandyCaneLane I don't think I could argue with that really either..
@@MandyCaneLane I may have meant the trio really in this series.. ..
By Stephens accent I reckon he comes from near Bristol England about 40 miles from me.
5:15 - 5:20 😂Sounded like he said "octopussies." 😂
I think if a train is more like Amtrak or CSX, and it's a passenger train, and most likely the passengers will have over night trips, the person's room or the person's car is more likely to have a restroom. Not to say they definitely do (I don't know), but it might. Some do. Kind of like commercial airplanes and their restroom, or Greyhound busses and their restroom. But if it's just your local transit system's train, it definitely won't have a restroom.
I'm with Karl on this one: "Everything needs to be useful." (As you put it, Mandy). ..... "What is it here for? What is its purpose?" ... Besides Ricky's response: "Because it didn't die." But, Ricky, "Why did it come into existence, in the first place, to be alive to be able to die?" I'm with Karl on that. Cause, "purpose" is the one thing that fuels me and keeps me going. So, I know what Karl's talking about.
One time in college, I offered a lady classmate peanuts, but I said to her "Nuts?" She said "No thank you, and next time say peanuts." 😂
Lmao about the last part!! 😅😅

Karl did eventually end Monkey News as he decided there was "nothing going on in the monkey world"....on their old radio-show, Karl used to do a segment called "Educating Ricky" which as it went on got totally bananas, makes this show look sane.

@@drake128 There was a moment on the XFM show where Steve hit upon something that totally explains Karl and his nonsense where Steve says "You know, I've never heard Karl admit he might be wrong about something..." and Ricky responds with "YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!" and that explains a lot of Karl's horseshyte...he paints himself into a corner by talking bowl-ex..then refuses to admit he got it wrong, so invents solutions that are nonsense stacked on top of nonsense...or, as Karl once said on XFm "Ahm using me fables!!"

On a side note , Ricky actually has an honours degree from university in philosophy
Don't know if that did much for him! His mind isn't very open when listening to Karl 😅🤪
@@MandyCaneLane He originally sought a degree in biology, but after two weeks decided that it wasn't for him, so he switched to philosophy. During his time at university, he met his girlfriend, Jane, and tried to become a pop star by starting a band called "Seona Dancing". After about two years of trying to break out and little to show for it, he gave up his musical dreams and went on to perform in minor comedy sketches, and worked in a variety of office positions as well, which became the inspiration for what would become The Office. In the mid-90s, he took a job as a radio DJ for XFM, a London based station. There he met Stephen Merchant and hosted a radio show with him. In 1998 XFM laid off a bunch of staff, including Ricky and Stephen. According to them, they were actually fired for repeatedly insulting another DJ while on air. Whatever the case, the two saw their misfortune as an opportunity to pitch the series idea that they'd been discussing for the last couple of months. Stephen successfully sold the idea of The Office, but the producers didn't want Ricky in the lead role. Stephen had to convince them that it would only work if Ricky played David Brent. After the success of the first series of the show, Ricky and Stephen returned to XFM as celebrities, and were given a little bald-headed producer to manage the technical side of their radio show. At first Karl contributed very little, but he gradually started speaking more, and Ricky became fascinated with his opinions. The rest is history.

I'm sure you wouldn't like the Stink Palm either! (from the movie Mallrats).
That’s a great proverb.
I do get it, although it’s a bit double sided.
Like on one hand, it’s good in the context of, if one of you has been broken/depressed and then recovered/got your life back on track and you start a relationship with some who’s still a wreck because you’ve pitied them, you have the experience to be able to help them through it, or vice versa, if I’m following you.
On the other hand though, if you’re both equally broken, and both still broken you’ll just make each other worse i.e. constantly arguing like “Ugh I feel awful…Oh yeah have you any idea how I feel” so it’s unhealthy in that sense.
Nono.. I think you got it wrong. It is more like - no matter how crazy or a certain way a person is, there will always be someone who will love them for what and who they are. Like if you were a very specific puzzle piece, there will be at least one person who's edges would fit perfectly with yours. Something more like that 🤗
