That depends. I love The Untamed but i have some issues with Wangxian's relationship in the original novel. Frankly, I prefer Wangxian's relationship in the live action better (despite the censorship) than the novel and manhua.

Either that or read the manhua, or you can hear the audio drama, they both have the canon romantic moments.
Unfortunately, because of Chinas laws banning homosexual content they couldn't bring the romance to the live action and the donghua (anime;cartoon). But, they (the staff for both) always had the intention to represent them as a couple. If you look closely, in both adaptations there are details that directly confirm that they love each other, but they are sneaky.
The book and the drama...broke me :))) I have nothing in my life other than MDZS, WangXian, YiZhan, Untamed now

Not all authors can write good erotic content. I love her characters and plot.
Their romantic interaction is great (except in system), but I think s*x scenes are no good (I like them consensual, so yeah).
Author just doesn't write those scenes well in my opinion.
There's nothing wrong with that, though, being able to write good s*x scenes is a separate talent in itself.
I enjoy her MDZS and HOB plot and romance nonetheless.

This is one of the fandoms where the storyline is really complex and uses a lot of old Chinese Asian type of traditions. So it might be kind of confusing for western fans but I suggest you guys reading the novel, it’s so worth it! There’s an English translation available online. And the comic which is (called a Manhwa in Mandarin), it’s really nice as well the audio drama is spicy but unfortunately I don’t think there is an English version available on RUclips since it would be best to purchase it to support the creators. You are able to watch the drama on RUclips the channel Tencent posted all the episodes with English subtitles. I love how u called jiang cheng a home wrecker 😂😂 now a useful tip on what adaptation to start with this beautiful series:
There’s currently 6 adaptations:
- The Novel: pros: it’s not censored, much more detailed, wangxian married. cons: might be a bit confusing if you start with this one, and you might be a bit disappointed to follow with the other adaptations after since most of them don’t explicitly show wangxian as a couple.
-The Donghua: the animation, also censored. Probably the most censored adaptation.
Pros: very cute art style uwu, it’s still ungoing.
Cons: VERY confusing so i do NOT recommend you start with this one.
-The Live Action/ The Untamed/cql: the most known adaptation.
Pros: oof where to begin. BEAUTIFUL OST, The actors r very high quality and they bring the characters to life PERFECTLY. No one could’ve portrayed them better. Very easy to understand (might have a bit of trouble in the beginning but you get accustomed easily), it shows the flashbacks first, then the present. Despite being censored, it does an EXCELLENT job at displaying the mutual love between wwx and lwj and while it doesn’t show any explicit romance, it compensates with other very sweet and beautiful scenes that leaves you with no doubt that wangxian are in love, 50 episodes!!( seems like a lot but you’ll be wishing for more), the behind the scenes of the drama r so worth watching!!, I could go on but basically. The Untamed is the best adaptation to start with imo cause it really introduces you to the world and prepares you for the rest of the adaptations.
Cons: a lot of fans only watch this adaptation, not really a con but kinda annoying sometimes, lack of explicit romance, changed various points of the original story to fit the drama better but nothing that would drastically affect the story.
-Audio Drama: beautiful. Simply beautiful. Has 3 seasons +extras.
Pros: it’s like hearing the novel, the most true to the novel with the manhwa.
Cons: not much really. It’s just like the novel but only voices and no explicit sex scenes (only kissing)
-The Manhwa: it’s still ongoing so definitely don’t start with this one lol. It’s very cute so far and very true to the novel tho uwu.
- The jpn Audio Drama: it just started last week and there’s there’s no translation so far so not much we can do about that.
So that’s it!! I hope you enjoy this beautiful world of the author Mxtx and after you finish mdzs don’t forget to check out her other works such as tgcf and svsss. Both bl and very cute just like mdzs. A lot of the mdzs fandom also stan these other two novels so you’ll see them often on the tl. Thank u 💜
Edit: yall this is just my opinion and yall can start with whatever adaptation yall want. This is just me giving advise on MY experience on getting into the mdzs story. I never said which adaptation is better, just my opinion on which adaptation might be better to START with. Stop gatekeeping this story and let ppl enjoy however they wanna enjoy. Some ppl might just want to reas the novel while some ppl might just want to watch the series, either way, they’re supporting the story and loving the characters, doesn’t matter which version they like best
Maybe the only con for the jpn Audio Drama is that all the names were changed and adapated to japanese. So, it's like having to learn every name all over again.
yessss, i was literally going to start typing about all the adaptations but this was more useful 👌.
more information for people is that jiang Cheng is actually wei wuxian's brother 😂. And all the characters have like three names, example wei wuxian also has wei ying and yiling laozhu/patriach. And lan wangji can also be called lan zhan, huangguang-jun, lan-er gege, etc.
There was also the other arc which has xue yang, song lan and xiao xingchen that was also in the video.
And another of mxtx (mo xiang tong xiu's other novel) which is Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven's Official Blessing) that was shown in the video at 13:57.

Having watched the cartoon, I have to say two things:
1) The art is simply gorgeous and I loved every minute of it
2) Unfortunately, it doesn't show any canon gay moments that many fans of the novels were waiting to see ( I guess due to the fact that Chinese television didn't want to show it but I could be wrong )
Either way, I'm so happy that you will watch it, I'm looking forward to your opinion on it.

This is actually second novel from Moxiang Tongxiu, two more released (Heaven Offical's Blessing and Scum Villain's Self-Saving System) and all three will have/have donghua/animation adaptation, they're that good! Also, ready to dive in? Get ready to be EXTREMELY frustrated at miscommunication issues between couples. And annoying people who actually do their job if being minor antagonists too well.

How to watch Mo Dao Zu Shi:
• Donghua or Manhua - the animation and comic allow you to associate a name to a face, both follow the canon well and both are incomplete so you have some mystery left for when you read the novel.
•Novel ( if you don't want to read the explicit scenes, the Chinese audio drama works in replacement too) You get the whole story while also not being confused by the names and lore because you've had a visual medium introduce them to you. Now you know the whole story.
•The Untamed (drama) - Once you know the story and the names you can go to a less faithful and more fanfic like adaptation. You've Read the novel so you aren't confused about what's canon and what's adaptation original. You can appreciate its new moments and spin on the original novel. It's a good mix of "the story you know and love" and fresh content. Some of the characters are also different from how you remember (notably Wei Wuxian) and it's almost like getting to know them again. (Don't consume this one first because it's world/characters are significantly different from the other adaptations, and you should really only be watch it after you can distinguish between the two. Or else it's a mix of spoilers and new content that'll make the novel confusing once you read it.)
• Japanese Audio Drama (just released!) The characters have slightly different names (duh it's Japanese~) so it's best that you are well versed with the original names before hand just to avoid the confusion. This one will probably be just as explicit as the novel. Can be consumed before the untamed. We don't know how much it will diverge, odds are it'll be a shoe in for the novel.~

CQL went the "yeeted himself off the cliff" route (and no, no matter how you look at it, he already threw himself off the cliff before either lwj or jc reached him). Book went "bish it was so traumatic wwx doesn't remember it" route. MDZS is brilliant but wwx is an unreliable narrator. People tend to do the same as lwj, but not every single person in MDZS knows the facts. The rumors are even more unreliable, because who spreads them? Who stands to gain from those rumors? God knows it's not the purple grumphead who barely tolerates talking to people.

They both dislike politics, but wwx knew what he was doing, impulsive they may be. "I can't protect you anymore" is a line said by jc for this reason. Even if he wanted to, he can't. And he wouldn't really want to, his capture in the first place meant he has trauma against the wen sect.

Just some information about the names: In the time period of the drama, people usually have two names. Their birth name and their courtesy name. Courtesy names are given when they come of age, and they are often used by ppl outside of family and close friends as a form of respect. So sometimes if you address someone you don't know very well by their birth name, it's considered rude. The red and black guy's birth name is Wei Ying, and his courtesy name is Wei Wu Xian. The birth name of the guy in white robes is Lan Zhan, and his courtesy name is Lan Wang Ji. Keep note of what names the WangXian couple uses for each other throughout the drama, cos then you'll be able to see some interesting nuances in their r/s ;)
Sometimes LWJ may be referred to as HanGuang Jun, but that's just a formal title. Another thing which might be interesting is that LWJ has a twin brother (I forgot which one is older) and his name is Lan Xi Chen (birth name Lan Huan). You should be able to differentiate them fairly easily in the drama, but if you haven't seen the donghua/manhwa yet, just know that LWJ's bangs come over his forehead ribbon, and LXC's bangs are under his forehead ribbon.
And if you're worried about the purple guy being the homewrecker, don't worry! His name is Jiang Wan Yin (birth name Jiang Cheng) and he's WWX's adoptive brother. (WWX is the adopted one). They have a pretty close relationship, but there's a lot of misunderstandings and circumstances that separated the two during the plot. So if you're up to some (really good) sibling drama angst, this would be a great story for you to watch/read. Also (in my opinion) JWY isn't that bad. He might seem like a villian but his actions are understandable due to circumstances and pressure from society. He needs a hug and a nap.
(Also I think some ppl ship LXC and JWY tgt :))
So glad that you're diving into this fandom! There's a lot of plot buildup and excellent character development, so I hope you'll enjoy! I recommend reading the manhwa (comic) first, then watching the donghua (animated series) before reading the novel (optional) but that's just my personal opinion. If you're planning on reading the novel, have a bunch of tissues on hand (esp at the middle to the end) cos you will ugly cry so hard.
(Also the animated series is available on RUclips under a channel called Tencent Video, compiled under a playlist. There's English subtitles too.)

so, while looking for MDZS stuff(13:58), at the begining(red wedding clothing etc.)there was TGCF(Heaven Official's Blessing), wihich is written by the same author, it's definitely worth looking into, super immersing in my opinion, and so interesting! just like mdzs it will get donghua(there is trailer already! and it's! so! lovely!) and (possibly) drama adaptation too(tho i'm not sure). Tgcf already has manhua, but there aren't many chapters released, it's quite new, but the artwork is just.. like really beautiful(in my humble opinion x) )

So to sum it up, can't say about mdzs novel (i adore dongua but again tgcf doesn't have its yet so can't yet compare), and i probably spoiled myself with tgcf becouse i think i won't find any other novel as good xD

And if you’re searching for other novel in the same genre I’d recommend you check out novel’s update. They have all the Chinese (and else) novel classified. Also I’m currently reading « The husky and his white cat shizun » and i absolutely love it ! If you’ve liked mxtx’s novels you would definitely like it ! For the tgcf manwah I thing they’re forced to cut stuff and if I didn’t read the novel before I don’t think I would have understand even the first chapter lmao. Obviously it’s hard to translate this complicated and long story in a limited chapter :/ but well I think it’s still good !

Unpopular opinion but I think Jiang Cheng isn’t as bad as the fandom makes him out to be. Yeah he’s obnoxious and makes stupid decisions but it’s mostly due to the superior complex that his own father gave him by constantly telling him he’ll never be as good as Wei Ying.
