    Hey man, I love the video. Thanks for bringing up the idea of not letting ourselves become a brand. It's so easy to let work bleed into our lives. Cheers to being kind to our offline selves! 🍻😁

    Wow I'm really impress that you were not offended by my comment. I wanted that the reason I express what I did is that many of those who have revealed the good bad and the ugly has helped me to realize that In some areas of my life I'm not alone. Truly your response is respected by me not that I count in your world but I appreciate it, and I appreciate your work. Happy Day. Cheers.

    0:49 People definitely had different ways of presenting their selves pre-social media. In fact, I'm not certain here, but I feel maybe social media has allowed us to blend our different masks or personalities more together since it blends the boundaries between work and life outside of work. I feel like we have a more casual way we present ourselves nowadays, if in a professional career compared to 20 years ago when I was a kid, it seems like work wear was more formal then for a professional back then.

    Not only do we base our self-worth on our likes and views but also on other peoples', as you put it, "curated selves". No one posts photos of when they get yelled at work or receive bad news (well, maybe some do, but not most). It is helpful to remember that no one is who they are social media, at least not completely.

    Everyone becoming their own brand is something that just doesn't sit well with me. It sucks that we all feel obligated to go through certain motions on social media to get the attention that we crave. It's good to constantly remind yourself how much that doesn't matter, so that you can start to focus on what does matter.

    • @Participant

      I'm afraid this social medization, if I may be allowed such a term, will continue unabated. I fear for future of all of us. We're such an arrogant species at yet despite this being capable kindness and generosity. I'm afraid due to social media's addictive quality (being geared towards stroking one's ego, creating conditional responses, algorithm governed periodic ego boosts, et al.) short of a revolution in how we handle this technology right now then humanity may very well be doomed. It seems we're all right as a species so long as we're not getting _too_ smart for our own good

    Amazing production. I think we can also start posting our successes AND failures, our trials and errors, our motivations and struggles to influence others in a way social media has not done before. By doing this, we show the world how we work hard to achieve our goals, how we struggle to achieve success, and how we live not like the "best" self, but like our "real" self. Thank you for this video :)

    Great video Chase. I feel like for a lot of people, they hide who they are in the "real" world and are themselves online. Just as a lot of people use the online world to show either just a part of themselves, or even a completely false image of who they really are.

  • @joeedward8576
    @joeedward8576 8 лет назад +1

    I have to say, though, I do not believe it is important to gain attention through social media platforms that many people do. Many people do rely on external things to make them happy. The cost of that is to their friends and family and on their health and well-being. But, if they are aware of those things yet still choose materialism or the social media representative equivalent, then they are just being themselves. People are so diverse. We are not all the same in this thinking despite, I, myself agreeing and ideally living the way you talk about in this.

    I generally agree with the points you're making, especially the whole "embrace your imperfections" part, however I think we sometimes give Internet too much credit for some of our behaviours. I mean, yes, sure, we are not exactly the same in "real life" as we are on the Internet. But firstly, I don't really like calling everything offline "the real world", because I think what's online is just as real as the offline part. I mean, you probably feel that yourself - aren't your online friendships, with people you met online, just as real as the ones you have with the people who you get to drink your morning coffee with (offline!) now and then? And the Chase you are on the Internet - on your Instagram, on your channel, on your Twitter - is a version of the whole Chase, some part of you, just like my Internet self is one side of Paulina. BUT, as you said yourself, we also are different around different people from "the real world", aren't we?
    Internet is not only "us around a specific group of people" (strangers, mostly), but it's also a different situation. We're different at school, we're different at home, we're different on the Internet. I happen to speak a few different languages and I feel like I am a different person in each and every one of them. So am I "true" in my native language, is this the most "natural" situation for me? Well, I feel more natural speaking English... I don't see one as a real me and another as a version of me. They are all different versions of me, they have equal rights in constituting what's "me".
    Also, when I travel, when I am in a new place, where I don't know anyone and no one knows me, I am different than I am back home. Is that because I can fake myself, since there's no one around who would catch me on that lie, or is that because I am free of expectations people at home put on me and I can truly be myself? It's hard to tell.
    This whole ramble was to say that yes, we are trying to be our best, curated selves on the Internet, but in my humble opinion (sometimes I think I am the last person on Earth who writes that whole expression and doesn't really uses acronyms), it's not like Internet altered human nature on it, it just hightened it, took it to the extreme. Think of a version of you that tries to impress your date and the coolest person you know and potential employer AND your personal hero at the same time. And then put it into the situation where you feel like you have freedom to be a slightly different than you are on a daily basis, maybe more like a person you'd wish to be. And then imagine repeating that daily. Here, Internet you.
    Okay, maybe you're right, maybe we are especially different on the Internet. But I still don't think that our Internet selves are less real, they are just a different part of us. They're us stripped off our fears, with the features we'd have if we were bold enough to pull them off in the daily life, they reflect some of our hearts desires, for sure.
    Everyone knows and agrees that you need to meet someone offline to really get to know them, but I also think that you need to get to know online versions of your offline friends to really, fully get to know them.
    Wow, that turned into quite a chaotic TL;DR (what did I say about the acronyms earlier?), but I guess it's a good thing (maybe not that good for whoever is reading this, if anyone). It means three minutes of your video was that much food for thought. And that was just a first episode. Keep up, I will definitely keep on coming to see the next episodes (however I promise to not write THAT long comments anymore :P).

    • @Participant
      @Participant  8 лет назад +5

      Hi Paulina,
      First... WOW! We think it's so awesome that you want to think deeply about this topic and dive right in. We love reading comments like this, so please do keep it coming!
      Second, you bring up some really interesting points. Since we control the way we appear on social media, we get to decide which "version" of ourself we put out into the world. So how do we avoid putting out a version with the goal of getting the most likes? How do we become comfortable putting out a version of ourselves that doesn't hide the things we don't want seen? So much food for thought, you're right!
      Thanks for sharing your perspective with us!

    • @episodically8643
      @episodically8643 8 лет назад +2

      Exactly, so many questions! My comment was more me-trying-to-process-my-thoughts than me-having-a-certain-opinion-on-this-one. But I admit I totally forgot about the "being in it for the likes" part of one's online identity and now I don't even know how to add that to the equation. I guess humans are just very complicated, both off- and online.

    "Being popular on Instagram
    is like being rich in monopoly "
    Most of the time we are preoccupied with the number of likes and want to be popular or famous but the thing is that person is portraying what they want you to see and not who they really are :)

    I was once on an app to make friends because I moved to a different country, and one person stopped talking to me after I told them I don’t have social media, explaining it was because I prefer my life without it. They couldn’t understand why, and I suppose they were looking for people who’d fit into their ‘Instagram’ life. It was weird though - made me think: do I not count as a person if I can’t add value to someone’s social media presence? Really weird. And I’m 27 mind you. People be strange and different, and we just have to accept it I suppose, and even though I haven’t had any friends for two years, I’d much rather be alone and hold out for people who aren’t obsessed with it, than waste my time being a brand to appeal to these types of people.

    I have trouble with verbal (and social) communication sometimes, so I find it easier to "be myself" online.
    In person, I have to wear a mask, pretend I'm "normal", pretend I'm what society wants me to be, meet expectations which are 10x harder for me than they are for others...when you have ASD, that's super difficult.
    I don't care about likes and numbers; I run a comic called "AuTalkz", which is a comic about life with autism and raising autism awareness/acceptance.
    I typically get hundreds of views when each issue is posted, and I do wish that it would get bigger and people would share it more than they hit that "like" or "favorite" button...
    ...because I'm more concerned with the message I'm trying to get across than the number of favorites/likes I can get from it.
    But for me, I'm the same person online as I am in real life...only I have an easier time expressing myself and communicating.

    Thank you for making this video! I remember feeling like Happy Birthday wishes on FB were disingenuous cause the notifications your friends get, reminding them to do so. Now I feel like most social media, particularly things like Snapchat and Instagram, have become almost like social market places, where people can and will advertise for themselves and their life, as well as their ideas or opinions. I know people don’t like this kind of opinion but to me it’s really gross. I want to live in a place where people’s ideas, and their opinions of themselves and their lives and goals, and their opinions of others, are all based off of what people genuinely experience, instead of whether or not they had the right social media presence. I don’t think it’s wrong to use social media but the culture needs to change radically. We should embrace our good days,and our good looks, or whatever else, but we should just as much or more embrace our difficulties and our hardships. It’s frustrating to me, to think how much people might be capable of helping each other if we had social media that encouraged us to talk about our problems constructively, instead of encouraging us to construct idealistic virtual representations of ourselves. I’m curious to think whether or not people who use social media heavily would agree that it feels like advertising, and I worry that people might even convince themselves that they’re living well when they’re really living unhealthily, but I guess only time will tell.
