    What a wonderful event! The smectite clay tests were interesting because of the strong contrasts of some. I was happy to see Concho and the St. Johns dump represented! Thank you.

      Hey Irka! I got to wondering after you left if you were the Irka who was my channel member, so glad to learn that you are. Thanks for coming. The Southwest Kiln Conference will be the weekend of September 30, October 1 in Blanding, Utah. That would be a great learning opportunity.

    I'm in AL. My entire property is an old riverbed and its valley whole thing is a mix of quartz rocks, red clay, and some sand.
    I'm very interested in using the clay here to try my had at pottery. Love the vids so far.

    8:51 I've been planning on doing a firing like this soon, but with a steel bucket instead of sherds. I was wondering, though, about whether or not one could insulate the bucket (like having one bucket inside the other, with a thin layer of perlite/clay mix in between. That would slow the heat transfer from the charcoal into the pots, reducing cracking (theoretically), but still eventually reaching temperature as long as the fire wasn't over too quickly. Thoughts? Anyone tried something like this?

    • @AncientPottery
      @AncientPottery  Год назад

      That might work, I would worry though that if you insulated too well the pot might never reach the desired temperature. Cover sherds or flower pots provide a bit more insulation and protection against thermal shock than a bucket does.
