  • I try to make blade out of rusty old bike wheel spokes. First time forge welding such material. It was a great challenge , I almost failed a few times but I think I managed to make something cool at the end.

    It's definitely not a bad knife, maybe some oil on the handle and it's done. I love the pattern, it's like a lightning in the knife!

    LoL. I was thinking, "That looks like a butter knife." Three seconds later you say the same thing. Nice work by the way. Not an ugly knife. It reminds me of the type of utility knife that would have been carried a couple hundred years ago; used for eating, skinning game, etc. Just a nice little secondary utility knife.

    Nicely done. I was hoping you'd leave the rust on the spokes like Big Dog Forge did with some of his damascus products, but this came out well.

    • @RustLegion
      @RustLegion  Год назад +2

      the rust was very thick and I think that it would cause problems with the forge welding.
      I am not sure , maybe the flux would be enough to remove it when heated but I wanted to be safe :)

      I wanted to twist it and to fold it at least once or twice , but I should set up a vise next to my forge . And the material was not enough to fold. I really like what you did there, my only niggle is shortening the tang - where you could have left it long and peened the end of it and instead you drilled it to take a pin and compromised its strength. But still a great project!

    • @RustLegion
      @RustLegion  Год назад

      Thank you , It was not long enough to peen it , I had to weld threaded rod or extend the tang and I think for such a small and thin knife it is not necessary :) For my bigger blades I peen the tang or fix it with nut :)

    Two questions bud.
    To make a forge to make knives,do you think a good quality hair dryer would provide enough air power when blown thru maybe a 2 foot leader pipe (to keep the dryer safe from the heat.
    And two...when you were shaping the blade on the piece of wood...was thar to add carbon into the blade steel?

    • @RustLegion
      @RustLegion  Месяц назад +1

      For some operations hair dryer will do the job. The problem is that they are not designed to work for very long time without a break. Also if you want to forge something bigger or to do forge welding you will need something more powerful.
      I used the wood because I make a forge weld (i want to fuse all the spokes together) and since they are all small pieces , if I put them on the anvil , since it is metal it has good thermal conductivity and it will absorb the heat from the spokes very fast and the forge weld may not take . On the other hand the wood is more like insulation and when I put the billet on the wood it will not lose heat so fast so I can hit it a few times to fuse it together
      I hope that my explanation is clear , sorry but my English is not very good.
