What a great calm day for Sams final hunt before School. I really liked the part with the underwater shots, good finds! Some days I spend hours and find only little tiny ones but the Journey and the time spent outside with a loved one is priceless. Have a great year @ school Sam. For those that do not know this lake she's chilly 🙂 Unsalted and Shark free!
You're right. If I was only happy if I found great agates, I wouldn't bother making that drive. Even if I don't find any agates at all, I always find other fun rocks and I just enjoy being outside appreciating God's creation.
Very cool finds Rob and Sam. Sam congrats on going to Tech I’m sure you’ll do great. Hope you have a safe drive up to Tech. Hope you Rob and your family have a bless weekend
Sam is my neighbor. He has lived across the road since he was about one year old. His grandfather was my doctor as a kid. So he's not my son, but he's sort of like a son to me.
My son is up at Tech! Every time I talk to him he sounds so happy to be up there! Makes a mama’s heart happy and sad at the same time cause I miss him so very much!
That offset striping is pretty stellar, definitely look forward to seeing that polished; but just the same as all the ones you pick, nice haul. Thanks you two.
"You can be happy, I'm just saying it doesn't have great bands.... We'll call it agate..." Tough crowd. On a different note, I liked the Darth Vader breathing while snorkeling.
Great looking beach. Some very interesting rocks, especially the one at 13:30; quite odd. Hopefully Sam is finding some spots to pick around, in between classes of course.
No problem if you have a snorkel, but I know what you mean. I was really hoping I'd be breathing too hard and need more air that I could suck in through my snorkel because I had found a really awesome agate. Unfortunately, that never happened.
The rock that Sam cut did revealed some interesting waves of color inside it. Kept thinking he should have taken another slice of it to see how the light shined thru it. Good vid. Thx 4 sharing. God bless.
Love this video! We just returned from our trip to the UP….no agates or yooper lights but we had a great time finding some beautiful rocks for the tumbler! Small world…we pulled your videos up to help us and my sister Judy started laughing…she remembers meeting you at school…. She was a German teacher at Alpena HS. So hello from Judy!
I love that you both pick up the odd ones. I wish Sam good times at college. Time to draft Nancy into coming! She has a good eye. The cut rock was very mysterious. Thanks.
What a different perspective to see the rocks when you were in the water. But I understand what you meant, Rob -- it is almost easier to see them when you are above them, out of the water. Some great finds! Good luck, Sam, in furthering your education! Find some more good hunting spots for you and Rob, so we can all enjoy them.
In deeper water, the snorkeling might have been more effective. It was fun to snorkel for a bit, but we both found ourselves walking in the shallow water while wearing our wetsuits. We decided that was silly after doing it for awhile and went back to just wading.
That's great. They're called Yooperlites. They're commonly found in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which we refer to as the U.P. People from the U.P. are called Yoopers. That's where the name comes from.
It would probably take a long time and a lot. But I think it would be cool to see a video of a rock hunt, then doing a tumble of just those rocks you found in the wild, and taking us through the progression of them to the finished product. Love the videos man. Got back into rock hunting and picked up a 33b because of your videos!
Yeah, that video would come out about six months later. One of the first years I started making these videos, I recorded a lot of beach videos and then showed them during the winter. Those did not go over very well. It seems like people want to see the videos in the same season that they were recorded.
Good Lake Superior agates have the bands of a good chert, but also great colors. The problem is that I don't find very many good agates. The ones I do find are usually pretty small.
My daughter and husband live in Chassell. We're heading up there in less than 2 weeks! Enjoy Michigan Tech and Houghton! Maybe we'll see you out on the beaches, Sam!
The first beach hunt I did, I tossed the rocks I didn't want out into the lake. That infuriated a lot of people who thought they were gone forever. I think I'm a little gun shy about throwing rocks out into the lake on camera after that.
I wish i could be there... at least for few days..i am so tired😢. but i live in a faraway kingdom where war still goes.. Kyiv wish you awasome weekend. Hugs. Anna.
Great day and great rocks!! I find banded chert with a chalk white cap/peel on them fairly often, In fact it's one of the things I look for. My wife found one not long ago that was a complete banded chert nodule, the outside of it was 90% covered in that white almost chalky peel. I don't know if they form that way or if the chalky stuff gets on them later, either way, if you see that white chalk stuff pick it up and look closer. I wrote a forum post, with pictures of a bunch of them with that white peel, showing what to look for so that more people can find them, just by looking for that white cap.
Thanks for the tip. I find them like that sometimes, but am probably prone to passing them up. I always assumed that chalky crust was due to weathering. I also assumed that it would tumble off. Have you been able to accurately predict what the inside will look like after you tumble that off or do you end up with a lot of duds?
@@MichiganRocks I haven't tumbled any of them but I thought the same thing, it would most likely come off but who knows, only one way to find out I guess.
Great video as always. We were just visited the Michigan Tech Mineral Museum last month. It has an incredible collection. Good luck in your studies Sam.
You found some real unusual rocks this time out. I enjoy snorkeling. Did you burn your hand? Thanks for cutting that black & red one, Sam. So many you picked up today I wanted you to take home and cut open. You guys rock!

I was hoping that you'd slice open the one at 4:03. A number of the rocks in the video that you didn't keep, such as the larger one at 10:52, I would have kept for our "rock garden". We have a length of sidewalk with a two-foot gap between it and the house. The previous owners filled it with what looks like small chips of coarse angular basalt gravel, it's quite plain and boring. We have been slowly filling it up with interesting rocks that aren't suitable for tumbling. Most every time I walk down that sidewalk, one of the rocks will catch my eye, a different one each time, and I enjoy it all over again. The downside is packing 10 to 20 pounds of interesting rocks five miles back to the car. Good exercise, I guess. If I lived in Michigan, I'd attempt to fill up a section of the rock garden with Yooperlites.
Sorry about leaving so many behind. I made an effort to keep very few tumbling rocks this summer because I have some rocks I purchased that I want to spend time tumbling this winter. Your sidewalk rocks sound nice, but I wouldn't put Yooperlites there. Those look awesome under U.V. light, but are pretty ugly under normal light.
I went to schooll at MTU. I love the Keweenaw. There are two basic rock types in the Keweenaw. The Keweenaw Bay side is mostly Jacobsville Sandstone. It was used for building but is not interesting for rock collecting. You may find some cool lake rocks at the shore though not as many as elsewhere on Superior. The Lake Superior side is basaltic lava flows with lots of intrusions like copper, jasper, quartz, copper minerals, and even native silver. Many rare and valuable rocks to be found here. You can find agates and such along the lake there as they come in on waves from the western end of the lake.
I have done some hunting in that area and know the basics. You could study rocks in that area for years and years though and not get bored. Sam has been doing some exploring on the weekends. I'm excited to go hunt with him next summer after he explores more.
Been a busy year for me, have not made it out for a hunt up North at all. Super jealous watching all your videos this summer. That super round flat rock was screaming to be skipped. Not sure I could have resisted lol. Thanks for the video.
I got a lot of really nasty comments on the first beach video I ever made because I threw rocks into the lake. People thought they'd be gone forever. I think I have a phobia about throwing rocks out into the lake while on camera now.
Too cool! I was thinking exactly what you ended up saying after the dive, too shallow to really see. I think i just took out a tumbled replica of your round flat rock you held up for a second, my niece ask me to make it shiny for her. Thank you for another awesome video! Safe travels Sam, see ya around Thanksgiving? lol

@@MichiganRocks Yeah, I probably would too. I'd also become a hunter of greenstone - found a few little pieces in the brief time I was there. Very different kind of hunt. And always, I'd become a connoisseur of pasties. Some good ones in Houghton.
Nice video guys! Its ironic...we just released two videos where we slipped on our mask and snorkel and go pro! But your right....on calm days like you had....its just easier to see them from walking! Idid find an agate at Grand Marais snorkeling years ago. Regardless our viewers seem to like the footage!!!
Hey Dan! People did seem to like the underwater video, but I wish we had done it on a different beach with deeper water. The problem with deeper water is that sometimes the rocks are more covered by scum and harder to see.
@@MichiganRocks Hi Rob! We first tried the snorkeling at Two Hearted River with my kids one super hot Sunday after church! We had over ten minutes of footage that we set to music! There was much deeper water and scum covered rocks....but beyond that out in the really deep water I discovered a gravel bar which was clean!! No agates though! I just thought it funny that you guys tried it! That agate Sam found in the beginning looked like an awesome agate! P.s. I just watched your video with KatyDid! You found some great ones!
Gorgeous day! Was cool seeing you guys get underwater, what’s the water temp? The red/greenish combo agate you found is really neat, the cross rock reminded me of a hot cross bun. Glad you guys got out, I’m once again jealous. I’m off for the weekend but a storm is rolling in tonight so will be stuck inside. All the best to Sam, hope he has a great time at school!!!
This was recorded in August and the water wasn't that cold. I was glad to have a wet suit because I thought we'd be in longer. It wouldn't have been a miserable swim without it though.
Found a large white agatized piece of petoskey in a farmers field. We have lots of petoskey from the lake shores. I have never seen the like of this particular stone, even has traces of red in it, but is clearly a bright white, very heavy for its size petoskey. About the size of two baseballs put together. No grey whatsoever in it.
I find quite a few silicified Petoskeys like that. They're very hard and can be tumbled with other hard rocks. They usually have a lot of voids in them so I rarely bring them home.
To me, all those rocks are awesome. Especially under water. Love the Great Lakes.
What a gorgeous day out on Lake Superior, I wish I could be up there now to both hunt for rocks and enjoy the Fall colors!

I hope you boys are wearing your sunscreen out there! Nice rock finds!
I usually do. My mom and my son both have red hair. I burn like a redhead.
Nice agate Sam!

Sam the green is pretty! Lol
