I'm commenting because this game deserves all the exposure possibly. For anyone picking up the game; remember, play vanilla for a while, then dive into the mods and overhauls.
True. I bought this game years ago and still didn't had energy to dive into it- vanilla style. I need to learn how to play but the mods man...the mods tempt me so much.
@@chillax319adding mods will severely overwhelm you if you aren't that familier with the game. You'll end up being at war with way more factions and fighting fleets that are likely tougher than vanilla with less info.
I still play vanilla, but I did get some mods to just enhance some stuff. Visuals mostly. Nothing in the way of combat or overhuals. Stuff like portraits and the like
I started out as a scavenger, but I always had a hard time trying to get to those excessively far exploration contracts.... until you mentioned that if you bring a tanker frigate with you, the distance you can travel increases dramatically and I smacked my gob when I realized how much sense that made! Thank you for the video!
Its also worth looking at the efficency of your fleet. Dragging a capital ship across the galaxy is gonna take a lot more than a handful of mid size ships.
@@CAMSLAYER13 After I have a few colonies bringing in boatloads of cash I always end up just rolling with my war fleet in deep space so I don't have to avoid anything or anyone. 2-4 capital ships, a few Eagles and smaller carriers and some frigates. A few haulers and tankers full of fuel and supplies are enough to last until the next big salvage opportunity and if i start running low I'll make a run to the core systems. The scavengers are suddenly more friendly and let me loot in peace.
I've been wanting to make something for this game for a long while - watching Cohhcarnage play for the first time and his community getting so into it was an awesome motivator to finally get in and make something! Enjoy folks, hope it helps more of you get into one of my all time fav games.

You have no idea, how good your timing was, cause i was searching for beginners guide and yours really helped even im 2 years already into the game playing, there were plenty good tipps there. Keep it up!
I think I have gotten addicted to steam because I went to find it on Steam and like you ay when I said well I hope Ziggy says were to get this from. And you did :) I started playing that other gave Star Valor, you maybe could have mentioned that the game was not even close to being finished :) However I have spent a fair bit of time with that game and on run 4 or 5 I finally built by Zeus ship, I have yet to actually complete fitting it and equipping weapons but I did build it :) I also built a Carrier ship but I think calling the Kurma a carrier might be an over complement but I did stick three ships with it and mining out a field of rocks does seem to go much better but maybe buying the Miner big ship would have been a better choice because it actually has a storage space much better than 3 space. Anyway still not complaining just need the guy to put in more quests because I kind of find myself doing whatever I want, I've not made it to 50 yet but I'm getting closer :)
For those just starting out I highly recommend investing into the leadership perkline. Wolf Pack, Trained Crew, and other perks buff the entire fleet making all ships more combat capable and thus allows for an easier time in combat.
Once this game makes its way unto Steam, it will surely gain more attention. Then this video will be best source for new players, so much work put into this video, great job !
If they ever get onto steam. I dunno. I had someone suggest the title to me but I was turned off by their website and their lack of willingness to use early access on steam. Yet they're selling early access independently. Also by the sounds of it they're forcing people to make fleets compared to similar titles that are more lenient and allow people to choose to go with one vessel if they like. Either that or its just poor presentation on their website. I wasn't sold by it and don't really feel it would satisfy the itch I'm craving in this particular genre.
@@lightningshifterwell that’s your loss because the game is an absolutely brilliant Space Sandbox RPG. Also flying one ship…. Would not get you far in the game. @@skengels definitely strange to be out off buying it from a different site than steam. But if it did end up on steam it could mean a lot more money which means this team could get more funding for more great games
Just bought the game few days ago and this is the best tutorial available hands down. This game is incredible and so under the radar I love space games and never heard about it until now
I've started playing this game shortly after it released, back when it still didn't have the campaign mode. Discovered it through Total Biscuit's video (back when it was still called Starfarer), I think that was the point when the game really took off and it's core community started forming. To this day it has remained my top 10 favourite game of all time, it is the absolute best space sim on the market with everything I'd want from the game like this. And if the base game isn't enough, there are enough really high quality mods to make it a couple times bigger, even transform it into a proper 4x game with their help where you can actually invade and take over enemy planets, and so can they. As a matter of fact I am playing it right now, yet again. The videos don't do this game justice, it is way more fun to play and has more depth than meets the eye, especially when it comes to ship building and combat.
Hey man, great video for newbies! Just wanted to let you know, that when simulating combat you can select a custom CR amount by dragging the white CR bar at the top of the UI. So you can see how your ships perform in low CR conditions or max CR conditions. :)
Another thing I'd recommend to brand new players is to try some of the basic mission mode stuff BEFORE trying the campaign. The combat in the game is amazing but the sandbox mode has limited engagements at the start. Getting a taste of medium/large fights at the very start can help players build the motivation to learn all the fleet management/trading/exploration stuff that comes later.
I had a lot of fun with this game ages ago when it was just skirmishes. Going back to it more recently I've felt completely lot in the open world struggling to work out what to do or how to know if I can take a fleet on in combat so this looks ideal. I'd love to watch more!
I actually just saw Cohhcarnage playing this as well, it was recommended to me by Twitch and I saw "Star Sector", caught me off guard. I picked up the game way back when you first played it but bounced off of it because of it's initial difficulty hurdle so this video helps me out a ton. Might have to jump back in and give it another go. On another note, I just finished another indie game that completely floored me - Symphony of War. Steam randomly recommended it to me so I checked it out and it blew me away, I'm planning on going back through it again sometime soon. Anyway, thought it was worth mentioning. I feel like it deserves any success it gets. Cheers! Edit: +1 for people who'd like to watch you do a playthrough of Star Sector!
Great guide for new and experienced players. I'm not totally certain how much Starsector I've played, maybe a hundred or so hours, and there was tons of information in this video on things I either didn't know about or didn't fully understand. There's a lot to learn in this game, but it is truly one of the best space RPG games out there.

Super useful- thankyou!! i was constantly running out of supplies from the get-go, but this was due to me salvaging too many ships in that tutorial mission
I have to sincerely thank you for reminding me I have this game. I built a new PC since I got this 2 years ago and it's not in my steam library so I forgot about it.
1:04:45 honestly i feel that this is one of the more important topics for really new players to star sector or even people to sandbox gaming. The lost of what to do because you can choose what to do.
A really great tutorial so in depth thank you as it is a very complicated game and it is easy to hit a wall as far as progress goes. Best recent tutorial on Starsector hands down.

Excellent video as always ZiggyD. Have not played in ages and this helped me get back into this hidden gem of a game. And as with all hidden gems they all need so much more exposure. I feel this game misses out on more players cause of so little advertising. more content creators need to get the word out.
finally decided to give the game a try. Thank you very much for the tutorial. Most spacesims are really heavy on the learning side for me. Games like Stellaris or X4 take forever to learn :D
this content is really helpful! thanks for giving us an overview on how the game works. I would like to see your in-depth overview of this game from you!
THANK YOU for this guide! You made my life SO much easier! At least on the basic level. There are lots of things I am not sure of, yet, like colonization, exploration, pros and cons of joining a faction, etc... but at least now I have a very solid basics to start from! Again, thank you!!! Much appreciated 🙏
Thank you, this made many things clearer especially on the fighting front. I’d loved it if you had put a some pointers on manual fitting and a bit more on a how to get the ball rolling after the tutorial which is really a hard part for me. Anyway that was great thanks again
It's driving me nuts how well you are maneuvering out there. I wish you would have touched on that aspect of the game. A difference i see in your combat compared to mine is all the ships you fight hang back whereas everything i fight come right at me with every weapon they have, blasting my flux into another dimension not 3 seconds into an engagement. Thanks for the vid!
Just picked this up after watching this video. There are only 3 tutorials that I can see. Anyway, this looks incredible. I went from Endless sky to Star Valor to this.
Even though Phase ships have been nerfed from the last update, they are still pretty OP. I run one as my flagship in a mixed fleet of high techs, mid lines and low techs and destroy the bigger bounties, it's a great way of making money, and is a bit more fun that just flying from station to station on a trade loop. Paragons (space doughnuts) whilst great, are too heavy on resources. You don't want to be flying those long distances. The Hammerhead and Sunder are amazing and you can go a long way into the game just with them. Best load out for a hammerhead is with linked assault chainguns. Best load out for Sunder (that I've found) revolves around a plasma cannon and twin graviton pulsers (I rather love the graviton pulser, deadly at close range). It is important not to overload your ships, as you will be "outfluxed" by the enemy. You don't have to fill every slot on a ship's loadout. Don't overlook pirate ships, specifically the Vanguard, Manticore, Enforcer or Eradicator. The Manticore is amazing with its central large slot, the Enforcer can come in useful for holding cruisers up. The Eradicator in many faction types is great, I like the pirate one, but the Luddic path and regular ones are great too. The Vanguard is cheap, can cause annoyance in numbers, and rarely is destroyed after each battle. Best to experiment, regardless of what you do. You might enjoy some formations more than others, and favour some ships that other people don't use so much. There are four common strategies for combat, close, long, carrier, sneaky. Those strategies work better on some enemies compared to others so be prepared to mix up your fleet composition from time to time.
Also a tip not mentioned that I feel is CRUCIAL! BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SELL! Especially on the "other" market. Pirates can and WILL get the things you sell. So if you sell the blueprints to an extremely powerful vessel on there. And a pirate comes to whatever station you sold it at, and buys (Or just steals as pirates do) that blueprint. Guess what you're gonna start seeing in pirate fleets. Especially if you also sell material printers or whatever they're called. Someone else learned this the hard way as they suddenly ran into a pirate fleet with a giant super battle cruiser or something that tore them to shreds. It was only after he pondered how they even HAD the thing. That he remembered he basically, unintentionally sold them the ability to make as many as they want.
When using sustained burn, instead of toggling the mode on and off just press and hold s until you finish your turn. It skips the delay as it turns back on

It's actually revolting for me the fact this game isn't available on Steam yet, and games like Cosmoteer - while good - has 10% of the content this game has and players think it's the best space game ever. I already tried to convince the dev on Twitter to bring the game on Steam but with no luck. Thanks and good work with the video, btw!
Dude has avoided Steam for over 10 years. Unless he decides to change course with the official 1.0 release the game will always be under the radar. The fact that the website where you purchase keys looks like a personal page from the 90's might give people pause as well.
More Starsector please! Good video though as a survival guide I would have spent a bit more on combat basics (at minimum what is flux and how to manage it).
you probably already noticed this, but going into the asteroid belt increased your sensor profile. tbh i never knew it had an impact at all until you mentioned it, but apparently a negative one.
Excellent! Just what I needed, as I just bought it and as I am dumb as a bag of Badgers, I started playing and said….”ughghgh? Brain hurts!” So colour me subscribed. :)
Best thing to do as well in system bounties is the chance to snag military ships in a after combat scenario. Just either waiting or engaging an assured victory. Just another way to make good money early on
I'm really late to getting to this video, oops. Starsector is one of my favourite games, but it's difficult for people to make videos about it because it's a pretty darn slow paced game. Personally my favourite start (if not playing Nexerelin) is the Explorer start - the Apogee is such an amazing cruiser that can be a player's flagship well into the endgame, it's so versatile and not only is it powerful in the player's hands, it's also very strong as a campaign ship for its built in hullmods.
Apogee's also make for great shield tanks in a mixed fleet. An Apogee with a PD Loadout and some Monitors is a strong shield wall against fighters and fleets.
if you like scifi games .. definitively worth a try .. cheap .. one time purchase and years of entertainment talking about bang for your bucks, comparable to factorio absolutely amazing
How did you get the slider to choose the amount of goods to come up (26:55-ish)? I've been trying to figure something like that out rather than clicking 100 times to get the number of trade goods.
rather informative, question about recovering pirate ships. Would it be worthy it to salvage there ships in order to scuttle them? Or is that not cost effective?
There's no benefit to recovering ships to just scuttle them (or sell), better to just salvage the first time if you don't plan on using them as it's more economic overall! It's good because it makes the gameplay way smoother too.
It's often referred to as "Space Mount & Blade" and Kenshi is also quite mount and blade type. If you like Kenshi you should definitely try all three games!
Starsector is absolutely amazing. I was kinda hoping for a pale shadow of this playing star valor, but that was a big disappointment, all that game did was make me start a new starsector game. Amazing modding scene too!
I just wanna put it out there. vorpx is a thing...hoping star sector can get the vorpx treatment...playing VR Starsector with depth perception would be awesome!
how does the missiles work? they seem to be the only limited use item. as far as i can tell the energy and ballistic weapons have unlimited use. once the missiles are fully used up in a battle does it replace them outside of combat using supplies or w/e other resources or do we need to resupply at a station maybe?
Missiles are only limited in the battle itself and replenish automatically outside of battle (that's one thing "combat readiness" and supply use to restore it is simulating)
The developer has spoken about this quite a bit in the past, he wants to get the game further along before considering it. There are certain aspects to getting a store deal with Steam that he finds unattractive right now.
You have to hand over 30% of the sale price if you are an indie developer on Steam. For some really small companies it is not worth putting out on steam, also it ties the hands on development a bit because you are locked into an update cycle. I notice with the the small team for Starsector, they like to take their time, and I find the quality is a lot better for it. I've had no big issues with the game, it runs pretty solid. Having said that, it would be nice if it was on steam, as the workshop would be a big boon. I love the workshop for Kenshi and Rimworld. I hold Starsector in the same bracket as those games; epic replayability.
As a new player, this is the most useful video I've found. Thank you for the well produced and informative content.

When in need, you know there always is that old reliable tutorial from Ziggy to help you out.
this content is really helpful! thanks for giving us an overview on how the game works. I would like to see your in-depth overview of this game from you!
Bought and started playing today! Loving it so far!
Every time I start a new run, I always go smuggle weapons, drugs and marines until I get 2-3 millions, buy some decent ship then head off to explore.
I usually smuggle fuel and food to avoid micromanaging one or the other and just keep beefing up it's escort
Thank you for the excellent StarSector tutorial video. I would love to see you play a "Let's Play" of the new 0.96a version.
The best 15 bucks I have ever spent.
Ohhh yeah, this is exactly what I needed. Appreciate it my dude! 👍
Thank you, this made many things clearer especially on the fighting front.
I’d loved it if you had put a some pointers on manual fitting and a bit more on a how to get the ball rolling after the tutorial which is really a hard part for me.
Anyway that was great thanks again
I've been dreaming of a game like this ever since playing the classic 90s game that started it all, Escape Velocity.
This was great. I'd love to hear any intermediate tips you have, too!
Yeah mobility and high flux diss is almost required for any ship
Amazing and tysm for the work put in. Prefered this tutorial over the others
This guide is very helpful as a new player. The game feels very big and theres simply no easy way to tutorialize all its systems
Amazging video , just what i was looking for .Thanks
Every time I hit a thick wall in a new obscure game you are there with an extensive freaking guide to save my rear end.
ZiggyD in space? Yes please.
That’s awesome. I love games with lots of little details and mechanics like that.
Thanks for putting this together!
New to the game, great intro. Thanks! Please continue these!!
When using sustained burn, instead of toggling the mode on and off just press and hold s until you finish your turn. It skips the delay as it turns back on
damn ZIGGY! I
m feakin out. Thats awesome
I stumbel! over YOUR Starsekto stream Somehow lost u from my playlist over the years.
You cant imagin how thankfull I feel
Without you I would have quittet POE back in EAs early beta., when Piety was the campaign-boss. I sucked so hard in the game ....u wouldnt imagin.
Back in the days, RUclips was diffrent. place:, and even im not sure today i believe like Kriperian and you were the only guys streamin POE serios (while he was mostly lifstreaming his OP run gameplay, you allways put a lot of work in Editing, Explaining, Interviews. All that stuff. I remeber asking myself who this ChrisWilson-guy is, while you were so freakin amazed to interview him... it was wonderfiull.
Without you and your work I would never have gotten one single Build to 80 back in the days. And also with your help I didnt play there.... I somehow died my way up.
Was already happy to see you in ExilConStream. Not playin much anymore the last years but joined last league (late sadly) and seeing forward to day 1 racing the next if possible.
Meanwhile: Starsektor. Only the good games, bro!
Luckiy Im not that shitty at this one. And even more happy Im back into your streams now
Best wishes from germany bro
Keep on the good work
Thanks for message and the trip down memory lane! Cool to bump into an older viewer through another awesome game like this.

This game is unbelievable. One of the best games i know.
If you arent allready playing it you should try dwarf fortress, too. Ive never been interestet either in colonybuilding nor in dwarfs very much, but this simulator...there is nothing compareable existing i guess. Its so far ahaid and beyond.
The fact that the website where you purchase keys looks like a personal page from the 90's might give people pause as well.
thank you for sharing this. this game looks great :)
great guide helped me a lot thx !
Excellent tutorial, TY for the hard work.
This game is SO GOOD OMGGGG!! Thanks bro for the tutorial!
This looks like a modern version of Star Control! "Launch Fighters!"
This is super helpful, I hope it’s popular enough to convince you to keep making more!
Thanks! I will try to when I get a chance. Just had a new baby though ☺️
More Starsector please! Good video though as a survival guide I would have spent a bit more on combat basics (at minimum what is flux and how to manage it).
those timestamps alone worth thousand likes
you probably already noticed this, but going into the asteroid belt increased your sensor profile. tbh i never knew it had an impact at all until you mentioned it, but apparently a negative one.
An Apogee with a PD Loadout and some Monitors is a strong shield wall against fighters and fleets.
if you like scifi games .. definitively worth a try .. cheap .. one time purchase and years of entertainment
talking about bang for your bucks, comparable to factorio absolutely amazing
i'd really like to see you do a playthrough of his game
Wonderful job, thank you.
How did you get the slider to choose the amount of goods to come up (26:55-ish)? I've been trying to figure something like that out rather than clicking 100 times to get the number of trade goods.
Shift click if I recall correctly.
rather informative, question about recovering pirate ships. Would it be worthy it to salvage there ships in order to scuttle them? Or is that not cost effective?
There's no benefit to recovering ships to just scuttle them (or sell), better to just salvage the first time if you don't plan on using them as it's more economic overall! It's good because it makes the gameplay way smoother too.
has vibes of kenshi but in space.
It's often referred to as "Space Mount & Blade" and Kenshi is also quite mount and blade type. If you like Kenshi you should definitely try all three games!
i love this game!
WOOHOOO, STARSECTOR!
Game seems great. I would love to play this in co-op with my housemate. Seems like the dev are against multiplayer though.
The has mount and blade style campaign so multiplayer is basically impossible
Combat only multiplayer is viable tho
Starsector is absolutely amazing. I was kinda hoping for a pale shadow of this playing star valor, but that was a big disappointment, all that game did was make me start a new starsector game. Amazing modding scene too!
I can't kill that tutorial ship, it rips me apart 🤣 I must be a right spaz
@@ZiggyDGaming ty for the information
I love that game. It's so sad that its not on steam, that would certainly boost the developement alot
The developer has spoken about this quite a bit in the past, he wants to get the game further along before considering it. There are certain aspects to getting a store deal with Steam that he finds unattractive right now.
@@caementicium284 Must be very negative aspects considering the amount of players the game would get if it was on steam
@@MrPH3N0M3NAL not every developer is going for the steam early access strategy, which I think is good
@@Chris3s Well, I'm not neccessarily talking about EA. The game is in a state which could easily release as a full version.
