I'm holding off on getting any version of this, for now. I'm sure someone will release a version of it with both versions of the film in 4k with extras. If not Toho themselves then maybe Criterion or someone. I can wait.
Very helpful, thank you! I was going to buy the Godzilla Store exclusive because I also assumed Minus Color was in 4K, but since it's not, I'll pass, as the commentary tracks aren't worth another $30 double dip.
Oh this legit angers me. I bought the Japanese collector's edition, thinking the special features were not gonna be brought over to the american release. Now it seems I'm going to get the american release just for the special features... ugh Toho.
That's exactly why i waited, i saw the price tag and really thought about it but said "nah" as soon as i saw the bonus material wasn't subbed at all. Might've taken an extra 6 months but i was worth the wait. I know how it goes with people who buy physical media like that so at the end of the day you gotta just take a wait and see approach to save yourself the heartache and cash.
My shelf is even larger because I also have the Criterion Godzilla, the Kong Kong vs Godzilla, Destroy all Monsters, & Godzilla vs Megalon blu-rays. Got all those before the big Criterion collection.
The problems with the Japanese Edition get even more frustrating. The UK release put out by All the Anime includes the English dub for both versions of the movie, AND subs for the Bonus Features.
Slightly miffed that I got the Japanese Collectors edition mainly because I thought it was the only way to get Minus Color. Had I known I would’ve waited for the watch along release. Toho will probably release a standalone with Minus Color on 4K just to drive the knife in further
I have the Japanese 4 disk, mostly for the cool packaging and art book and the Amazon steelbook, which is my main way to watch it. Until watching this, I had no idea it had an English dub option!
I bought all three releases (steelbook instead of standard). Mostly for their unique features and artwork. No regrets. When you pulled out the Criterion collection I seriously laughed hard. Perfect comedic timing.
Here, Toho has collaborated with All THE ANIME to distribute in UK. The steelbook 4k, dvd and Blu ray and deluxe edition 4k (the deluxe edition includes the same box cover art, with minus color B ray, all special features with the english subtitles and a booklet in English)! I wanted minus colour version so got the deluxe edition.
19:38 as someone who lives in europe im crying i have minus one original raids again king kong vs godzilla mechagodzillla2 space godzilla destoroyah 200 megaguiris gmk against mechagodzilla tokyo sos shin godzilla and all american movies except 1998 i can get final wars and showa box someday but other than that i cant get any without a region free blu-ray player and i dont have one so at this point i can almost only watch them illigaly
Tbh I would be willing to pay a good amount of money for a 4th edition that includes everything from the three + an extra 10 dollars if it includes the theatrical re-release version
the watch along version is well worth it to me, the wait was worth it. having minus color with 4k is great & the value for both, the bonuses would have been nice but its about watching minus one & minus color in sub for me.
Seems like the most definitive way to do this is to get the watch along for the 4K and minus color, and then the standard Blu-ray for the movie on Blu-ray and the rest of the special features. The collectors set seems to be OOP, so no point, plus all you’re losing are a few features without subs
Theres 2 more editions also😳 hmv in the uk were doing a standard 4k version with there exclusive slipcover. And the uk got a 3 disc steelbook without the clear slip which is the edition i got. Really nice steelbook
I have the first version. I really like the bonus feature even though it's not in English. It shows actress Kiyoko Shibuya getting stunt scene on the train explained by a jumpsuit wearing pro stunt woman who goes through the wire pull and fall with a demonstration. Then they make poor Shibuya do the whole stunt herself on camera! NO stand in. NO stunt woman wearing her costume etc.!
In the UK the standard release is just the 4k disc and doesn’t include the bonus disc so it’s total bare bones and if you want the bonus you have to stump up for the Steelbook or deluxe set!
Do you happen to know if the standard blu ray contains the same special features? I picked up the deluxe 4k from the Godzilla store so I don't want to get the 4k standard just for subbed special features 😂 Edit: saw you answered the question later on in the video haha, glad i can save a couple bucks at least!
I got my copy directly from the Godzilla website...and then they keep adding more goodies to release. And I ain't complaining. My only complaint is the fact there are companies that are discontinuing the production of Bluray discs and even stopping the production of bluray players..... I do not like this pending future where we are enslaved (exaggeration) to digital "ownership" but in actuality we don't own anything....
I brought the boxset but Not for SF. The Boxset is clearly for Collectors who plan on jus keeping them Sealed.. Toho is not doing anything Hollywood hasn't been doing to us for years. It's jus that Toho did it in a matter of months instead of over a course of years. Is it a Milk'em job, Yes!! But hey, How times did Ppl buy the same movie over because of SF, 4k or steelbook. If u love movies u will spend money on them...
I got the steelbook of Minus One for only 35 from Gruv. And yeah I'm getting the newly announced edition. Minus Color without the digi pack thing made me very happy and only 25 bucks to boot. The Minus One steelbook is my favorite steelbook I own. Sorry RoboCop......
I think i would've preferred an alternate version of the minus one standard version that was just what we got, and then the watch along version, both released at the same time. Maybe even delaying both so everyone could have that option at launch. I think if Minus color was a standalone release it should atleast be 10 dollars cheaper than what it is.
My only issue with Minus One's releases stateside is that you can only get Minus Color in the newest 4KUHD watchalong version. I was dismissive of the 1st release before the standard one we got in November because of a lack of subtitles on bonus material(which i thought was incredibly lazy for the price and figured i'd wait), and honestly having bought the standard release that was an excellent choice(I also saved 5 bucks because i went through Gruv so 25 for the 4K and Bonus disc seems very fair) I personally want to watch Minus Color but i don't think i need to own it, i am however interested in the commentary track so maybe i can read up on what Yamazaki and his team say about the SFX work elsewhere. In general though i think everything was fine with our american releases outside of ommiting minus color from the collectors steelbook, that seems really shitty. The UK however got it right for their collectors version in getting everything in one package, just a shame they didn't get what we got with our standard version for theirs.
Originally I was gonna import from Japan because I personally don't need subtitles but life had other plans so I never got it. Ended up with the Standard US edition when it came out. I didn't cared much for Minus Color because I don't think I'd watch it again after seeing it in theaters but I love director commentary tracks so I'm debating if I'll even buy it a second time. Toho really fumbled this.
Anybody who dropped $65 plus shipping on the Japanese special edition English release should be sent the extra features Blu-ray from the regular release for free. That's ridiculous
I guess the only consistent thing about Toho’s treatment of Godzilla video releases is their inconsistency… still bewildered at that expensive MechaG 4K boxset
What? The one that's coming out in June? That annoys the crap out of me, since I bought all their other 4K releases individually but now here's this almost $400 set with 6 films in it that I really want to get but can't afford in one shot. What are they thinking? Apparently it's also got a pre-order window and won't be something you can get later.
@@michaelrusso906 Exactly. I hope they do a la carte releases because $400 to see the remastered MG films is ridiculous. Including RA, 84, and FW is in a MG set is weird at best and disastrous for collecting they end up exclusive.
@andagi1920 Also, the Toho 4K discs have some amazing, rare special features that had never been seen before than I doubt would ever be ported over to an eventual Criterion release.
I'm definitely feeling frustration with how they handled this. I didnt get the collectors one because I knew they were going to release a standard edition with the english dub and thats what i was interested in. So i bought the standard edition when it came out thinking that was going to be it. I was sad it didnt include Minus Color, but oh well we cant have everything i suppose. But then like the day after my copy arrives they announce the watch along edition, new commentary and Minus Color with dub. Sigh.... If i had known that was coming i would have only gotten that one. Well i dont think I can return my original copy, since I opened it, so what I've decided to do is sadly buy the new edition, and then I'm going to frankenstein the two. So it'll be the watch along edition plus the bonus features disc from the standard all in a three disc case and I'll probably keep the cover for the watch along one. I'll probably just try to sell the standard copy and just mention that it doesn't include the bonus features, movie only. Maybe I can make at least some of my money back. No idea why they couldn't have just combined those two releases, it would have been so much better. I'm so annoyed. I just wanted the regular movie, plus minus color both with english dub, and maybe a couple bonus features but I dont care that much about those, they're just a bonus. But yeah I feel bad for anyone who bought that collector edition, y'all got screwed.
Does the standard blu ray release have all the same special features as the 4K? Since I got the Japanese collectors edition, it would be nice to not have to get another 4K release.
Thanks to movie guy 365 he did mention this not to buy this one to wait and I'm glad i did...this he said way back release day...i wish i can do language but waiting was a blast my first movie played on my new Lg 83inch g4 was incredible. Very impressive
I bought the Japanese collectors edition only because it was released first and it had minus color, thinking they wouldn't release the special features in the US. Looks like if you kind of almost want everything, get the standard release and this new one. Probably cheaper getting these 2 then the Japanese collectors was. Kind of frustrating.
I got the Japanese edition first, even though American release was inevitable. I still got the American edition for dub and as Godzilla fan. Didn't expect ANOTHER version with commentary. It's Godzilla... waddaya expect? lol
i have the uk deluxe edition cause its region b/2 and its perfect only thing is it costs 80 euros its fanstastic but its 80 so idk o and all disc are subtitled and i think it has all extras of the japanese version it has also packaging is ALMOST the same as the japanese version
There is one more release you didn’t mention although I can guess why. The original deluxe Japanese set with the gold leaf accents sold in Japan only. I was able to get a copy at Amazon Japan. Although no English subtitles, I had the luxury of understanding Japanese so I felt it was an outstanding Atmos presentation from the get go. The reason it took over a year for it to be sold in the US is because Anything sold or made in Japan is very expensive, also since Japan discs fall into region “A” what would normally happen if released simultaneously in the USA, the Japanese folks would just order their media from the US because it was simply way cheaper to purchase. So to milk every Japanese yen they could they withheld global distribution. Now here we are with another “silver” delux edition, standard release, and watch along, to milk as much cash as possible. LOL I’ll probably double dip and get the standard release if it goes on sale below $30. That gold leaf edition is special though and I don’t regret it. Great video…cheers!
I am very happy with the Steelbook but maaaaan is it annoying that it didn’t come with minus color. I’ll live as I’d watch that version way less anyway but still.
The reality is that Toho is just a pretty crappy company. The second I heard they were going to handle the release themselves - especially once I saw they were offering the film on the US Godzilla Store first - I knew they were going to pull something like this. They see international market as one big yen sign, full of idiots who love their IP enough to throw money at anyrhing Godzilla-related that hits the market. The amount of merchandise that's gotten licensed with Godzilla's face on it over the past few years is absolutely nuts. Toho will grant a license to anyone who waves money at them while at the same time crippling anyone who tries to give the actual movies a decent home video release. It doesn't matter if you're not able to see a good version of their movies, as long as you buy another plastic Godzilla knick knack, t-shirt or $2500 statue. And now that they're handling the home video releases of Minus One themselves, of course they'll do a half dozen different versions. American fans are stupid and will just buy them all, right?
This is nothing new from Toho they are just cashing in on this. Being a long time fan this is just how Toho has done things and they force fans to multi dip.
I thought the black and white version i seen the movie theater was great and than when i seen it again on netflix in color i didnt enjoy it as much i think things were changed.
WHy do companies drag their own franchises through the mud? THis all seems scammy. I want a 4K BluRay that included a 4k BluRay, a BlueRay, a DVD, and Digital Download and ALL of them with the Black and White version included.
Im just annoyed they announced the release for Minus Color. What a few weeks after after the main wide release? Most of the people buying the set probably would have waited.
Great video Soundout! You might be interested to know that here in the U.K. the theatrical and home video distribution was actually handled by Anime Ltd (aka All the Anime). The home video releases are pretty much identical (I picked up the 4 disc collector's edition) but annoyingly the default audio track is the English dub!
Funny enough I'm not buying any of the blu-rays. I'm an avid DVD collector similar to those people that do the VHS collecting. So yeah I just bought the DVD for this and it turned out pretty good. But then again I guess that's just specific to me
19:17 Easily one of the reasons I wished Matt Frank allows to import his stuff because I really want to buy his custom Godzilla movie collection cover. There's also one on eBay, but Frank's one looks way more appealing.
Pretty lame. But I got that 4-disc Japanese edition, mostly because I wanted both the color and minus color editions. The new commentary sounds great, but I'll stick with the version I have.
Toho Global milked the North American and UK cash cows, but good with this one. I bought the standard edition Steelbook thinking that was the end of my purchases, but lo and behold...there comes Godzilla Minus One Minus Color" in the Watchalong Edition, only available from the Godzilla Store who, incidentally, no longer ship to Canada. If anything, I expected there might have been a stand alone Minus Color 4K +Blu-ray package for 2025 available through through the regular outlets in Wal-Mart stores. One final comment: If they had do the commentary track at a later date because of talent availability then fair enough, but if it was in the can before the Steelbook/Standard Editions was pressed, then shame on them. That said, it's time to start sending email and snail letter complaints, voicing our anger as consumers, to their L A offices... Don't sit there and take it. Be proactive and politely... give 'em hell.
Why are people so whiny here?😶🤚🏼 When (if) you bought the US Sony store C.E or (like me) you bought it from a Japanese retailer , we KNEW we were getting a fine✨pressed edition with ALL the extras (minus commentary track) and only half in English! * Mine was the import, plus i got an eng sub bootleg which is still 4K to compliment it * Don't cry over your choice, go out & buy what you want. Whats the old addage? Suck It Up, Buttercup 😁
Perfect timing with this video. Criterion just announced a 4K/Blu-ray release of Godzilla vs. Biollante earlier today. 😄
wait actually?? that’s my favorite lmao
Preorders are live on Criterion's website. There is no listing on Amazon yet.
No 1984 release?
Not yet. That movie hasn't even been released on 4k in Japan yet. But I assume Criterion will try to get it out eventually.
Was just gonna comment this. So glad I don't have to shill out $80+ for the old Blu-ray now.
Bought the steelbook off amazon and they gave me a lower price guarantee discount. The price went from 50 to 18 dollars. What a steal.
How did you accomplish this?
Not surprised by multiple editions. Seems to be a standard Japanese tactic for physical media.
I'm holding off on getting any version of this, for now. I'm sure someone will release a version of it with both versions of the film in 4k with extras. If not Toho themselves then maybe Criterion or someone. I can wait.
Same. I love this movie, but disappointed by the home releases. 😔
Very helpful, thank you! I was going to buy the Godzilla Store exclusive because I also assumed Minus Color was in 4K, but since it's not, I'll pass, as the commentary tracks aren't worth another $30 double dip.
Thank you for making this video as I never realized how confusing it was to learn how many releases Minus One has.
Oh this legit angers me. I bought the Japanese collector's edition, thinking the special features were not gonna be brought over to the american release. Now it seems I'm going to get the american release just for the special features... ugh Toho.
They really intentionally made people double dip

What a mess

@Soundout12 agree it's a mess of a release hence which one should I get
The cover for minus one is still better than Constantine steelbook 4K lol.

It's like Capcom with Street Fighter II but at least they waited half a year for every release.

the watch along version is well worth it to me, the wait was worth it. having minus color with 4k is great & the value for both, the bonuses would have been nice but its about watching minus one & minus color in sub for me.

Great video…cheers!
i pre-ordered the watch-along edition and am ording the stander blu-ray version
When you get those two different releases, you'll have nearly everything from the Japanese collectors edition except for the trailer collection
For the minus color version.... I just put the color on the TV to 0

“Why are they doing this?”
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Good for Toho for celebrating this movie the way they have but ITS SO ANNOYING that these three releases exist!!!!!
It's wild, they're milking it fast
I thought the black and white version i seen the movie theater was great and than when i seen it again on netflix in color i didnt enjoy it as much i think things were changed.
WHy do companies drag their own franchises through the mud? THis all seems scammy. I want a 4K BluRay that included a 4k BluRay, a BlueRay, a DVD, and Digital Download and ALL of them with the Black and White version included.
Toho wants your money every and any way they can get it.
Eh, I just bought the Japanese Collector's Edition a couple of days ago, because I am one of those collector suckers.
The bootleg blu ray has a slipcover😅😂😢 the bootleg has the film and english subs plus a 20 minute montage of effects behind the scenes which is cool.
That's good to know!
Can you get the power rangers cosmic fury morpher?
Funny enough I'm not buying any of the blu-rays. I'm an avid DVD collector similar to those people that do the VHS collecting. So yeah I just bought the DVD for this and it turned out pretty good. But then again I guess that's just specific to me
As someone who bought the Japan edition, I feel pretty scammed
Toho doesn't care.
Unless there’s some kind of mix up 4K discs are all region free
So which is the best version to purchase?
Main release as long as you don't mind loosing minus color ver.
98 is not Godzilla.
Why are people so whiny here?😶🤚🏼
When (if) you bought the US Sony store C.E or (like me) you bought it from a Japanese retailer , we KNEW we were getting a fine✨pressed edition with ALL the extras (minus commentary track) and only half in English!
* Mine was the import, plus i got an eng sub bootleg which is still 4K to compliment it *
Don't cry over your choice, go out & buy what you want. Whats the old addage? Suck It Up, Buttercup 😁
Your hands in the video are so ANNOYING!! I can't watch!!
who cares? this is THE worst 'zilla movie ever made.. even the broderick movie was better....
