- I took the 2019 Specialized Stumpjumper 29 and the 2019 Giant Trance 29 to a local trail system to switch back-and-forth between both bikes. Here’s how it went down...

I demoed both of these bikes and really enjoyed the Trance, everything felt just right.
Must say, you're a fit guy Clint. You're lucky to have the energy to do that much riding in a day, I would be wrecked for a week.
I have a 2014 stumpjumper evo 29, i have to say it is definitely the best bike i have owned. I feel very confident on it. The bike is like new, i purchased it 2nd hand from someone who never used it.
One of my favorite places to ride. Wish it was open more than twice a year.
Where is this, what the name of the trail?
I got a NS bikes Snabb 150+ 1 2019 Enduro bike, 160mm fork and 150mm travel in the back. Im so impressed with how it handles uphills, havent even had to firm up the shock or lock the fork ANYTIME i have tackled an uphill and that is amazing to me. I was expecting to have to drag it uphill or stand still for a few minutes after i have got myself up, but nope.
A ahame those trails aren't open more, what surprised me is how well defined they are with so little use. Having your son in the videos adds a fresh new element, loving it. Have you ever thought of putting a camera on the back of his bike to edit in and put yourself in some more videos? Just a thought. It's also interesting how cycling is fun playing around for him yet dad is all about getting in the work out and more miles/laps.
The 44mm offset will increase trail and make the bike more stable at speed but it also has the effect to make the bike feel more snappy at slow speed, that's probably why you said it feels more playful. Manufacturers are switching to 44mm because it brings the wheel closer to you while also making the bike more stable, it allows you to put more weight on the front tire. At slow speeds having the tire closer to you with more weight on it gives snappier steering. More then half of the 2019 29ers I have looked at have switched to 44mm offset. Switching to 44mm offset isn't for all 29ers though, XC 29ers are still going to be 51mm offset. They say the 29er will start to benefit if the head tube angle is 68 degrees and slacker with at least 1150mm wheel base

Before I bought my 2018 Spectral 6.0 AL. I looked at the base AL. StumpJumper , Spectral costs 2400.00 with GX and SJ costs 3100.00 with NX, more than happy with my Canyon and we know how STS used his Spectral, he sure put it through its paces
Great video and I was waiting for it to come out before I made my decision. That said, couldn't wait, and so I bought the same Trance on Tuesday.
Third ride today and really getting in dialed in. Beat a PR by almost 30 seconds, but I think that has more to do with going from 26er to 29er. One thing to consider is I know you said you put your body weight in as starting point on the shock, and I know you know what your doing and what you like, but I had to put quite a bit more air in (25% more than my weight) to get sag to the recommended 11mm. Maybe a little more air might reduce the bottoming out, but might affect small bump sensitivity too.
Got to say, I absolutely love my Trance 29.
What do you think of a smaller wheel bike of the 26 compared to the bigger wheel bike of the 29?
Arahorn 4 rides so far and starting to really appreciate the handling on the 29er. It's not as whippy as my 26er, but it really grips and it's so fast and stable. I have a loop that I ride that normally took me about 45 minutes on the 26er, on the Trance I'm already down to 41 minutes with lots of room for improvement. I thought I would struggle more on tight switchbacks, but it's so predictable and easy to balance. Only thing I may change is the tires. The Minions are overkill for where I ride and they roll slow. Thinking of a 2.3 Ikon in back and a 2.6 Rekon up front.

@@Baksan_Dog1988 I was very torn too, and I don't think there is a bad choice. For me, the Trance was a little less expensive for the same component level. I preferred the Fox suspension front and back vs Rockshox (just a personal preference). From a ride standpoint, I felt like the LT Stumpjumper was a bit of overkill from a travel perspective for my trails and it wasn't going to climb quite as well. I considered the ST Stumpjumper, but it weighed the same as the LT, both of which were about 1.5 pounds heavier than the Trance. I did test ride both, and even though the Stumpy had more travel, it felt significantly less compliant on the typical trail rabble, which is where I think the Trance shines. It is really smooth. The Stumpy on the other hand was better off a 2-3 foot drop to flat ground as you would expect with the extra travel. Finally, and maybe even the deciding factor, that green spoke to me more than the denim blue on the Stumpjumper. Again, it was a really close decision, and I think I would have been happy on either. Good luck with your decision!
i had a trance and stumpjumper from years ago. The Trance suspension feels more plush, my stumpjumper with FSR and brain shock does feel more stiff and reserve for bigger bumps but less pedal bob.
I would love to know what you think of the Stumpjumper 29 ST version compared to the Giant and Stumpy LT

Great video! How would you compare the anti-squat or pedal bob between these two bikes? I’m curious about the Maestro suspension.
The new FSR suspension is really good. I would give the nod to maestro for pedal efficiency. Where maestro really has the advantage is the fact that it does not rely on the shock for pedaling efficiency so it's a bit more plush on small bumps.
Another great vid! Just curious, this particular video seemed grainier than usual. Was the record setting any different?
Filmed in 2.7 k at 30 frames per second. For some reason uploading to RUclips with riding footage through trees is pixelated. Whenever I get some time, I'm going to call RUclips to see if I can work it out.

great video thanks for that, i have just 2 questions. what are the actual weights of each bike and secondly which one seemed easier to pedal up those steep little climbs.
I can't remember off the top of my head but I did mention the weights and the first look videos of each bike. I'm thinking the trance was around 28.5 and the stumpy around 30 to 31. Check this out for details. The trance climbs better up steep hills

Comfort? Is the Spesh more comfortable than the Giant because of the extra travel and riser bar?
The giant is more small bump compliant and therefore more comfortable over the smaller stuff. Over drops and bigger hits the specialized is more comfortable because of the additional travel.

Considering these bikes plus looking at the 2020 Giant Reign 29 gives a little more travel but still the Maestro, any thoughts on the 29 Reign? Also a FL rider, love Santos, Alafia, Markham, Viriginia Key and Jonathan Dickinson. Can't keep up with my son's who have 27.5 Trances.
If you like a riding the rougher stuff and doing some drops and going to the mountains then the Reign would be okay. But if you like going faster on cross country type trails I would just stick with a shorter travel between like a Trance 29. I like my sentiment sometimes in Florida but on my Niner.RKT9 locally.
Can you swap wheel size on the giant ? Torn I have a plus bike I been looking at 29 full and trek , canyon , giant . Specalized

I like that Giant but hard to get anything from the Florida trails. Our sidewalks in New England are rougher. 😃 I’m on a Pivot 429T right now and the DW link is super efficient but not all that plush. I would really like more small bump sensitivity and less wandering going up the steep climbs. How’s the Giant with steep climbs? Does it wander at all?
I've found it Trail 29er to wonder less than Trail 27.5. I've climbed some pretty steep stuff with the Giant and it did totally fine. And by the way, we do have some pretty Rocky technical trails in Florida. As technical as a lot of stuff I've done in the mountains.
Clint Gibbs thanks Clint. My only experience is the panhandle. I had a dual purpose dirt bike and used to ride around back in the 80’s. Lots of sand.

For trails like this I would choose the 29. It rolls better overall. The 27.5 is good for long rough descents. That being said, you really can't go wrong with either one. I like them both.
@@ClintGibbs Why do you find the 27.5 better for longer-distance rough riding? Is the 27.5 more suited to slower-speed rough technical exploring than the 29?

Beautiful looking trails , interesting again , very hard choice. It looks like the small bumps that the giant trance 29er eats up would make it a better bike for longer rides !

Hello I’m new to mtb. Grew up racing motocross. Thinking between a hard tail roscoe 8 or fuse comp , or fs specialized stump jumper st or giant trance 3 27.5. Somewhat smooth trails in Maryland. Would like a good all round bike?i do have have back problems but I’d rather ride my bike than work on one so reliability is a factor
Assuming you may venture to rougher terrain as you get into the sport, depending on the choppiness of the trails you ride, you may want to lean towards a full-suspension for the long run. If a trail includes lots of roots and drops, the hard-tail may buck your feet right off the pedals when at speed. Tune a full-suspension's sag and tire pressure right, and you'll never want to touch a hard tail again, haha. Keep in mind depending on the fork and frame shock, you may have lockouts you can take advantage of to control the frame compression. I've had a 2018 Giant Anthem 2 (similar to the Trance, but 130mm travel) for almost two years, and it's been nothing but reliable. It has covered every trail I can think of, exceptionally well, here in GA. Giant has held to their warranty and replaced parts as requested, and customer service with local bike shops seems to be responsive.. All this to say, consider the XC category of mountain bikes, and be aware of the varying frame sizes between companies. To alleviate back issues and forward lean, take at the 'Reach' geometry on each model. Shorter Reach may keep you from leaning constantly.
Kyle McNab I was the exact same as you. Quit moto 2010 with a badly herniated disc. Took 9 years off and got into mountainbiking. I opted for full a suspension bike and i havent had any back issues whatsoever. In fact my back has never felt better. I dont know if a hardtail will aggravate it but i demo'ed a rode bike yesterday for 26 miles and my neck and back are a little tight.
I bought a 2019 stumpjumper ST alloy. Was cheaper for a full suspension bike but add tax and a dropper post and your at $2300-2400. Good things are that it has a short reach so you dont lean over as much, it doesnt bob and climbs well. Bad stuff is the tektro brakes suck, the fork is okay (i dont like it but it works). So, the wheels are super heavy, fork is heavy and i want to upgrade the cassette, shifter, wheels, fork and shock. Add that up and its like extra 2k that puts you at a 4400 bike.
I would also look at Canyon spectral and nueron, YT jeffsy. Those are pretty high specced bikes for the money. Coming from moto this sport is alot cheaper. No big maintainece costs, or race gas, air filters to clean or oil to change, no engine rebuilds or shock revalves etc. The bike will last years if you upkeep it. I wish i would have spent like 3k and got a significantly better spec'ed bike.

I have not ridden Haile's Trails in about 13 or 14 years. Are there lots of new trails or is it mostly the same? It was one of my favorite trails to race on.

It's mostly the same but more trees have been cleared which is unfortunate. Some of the trails may even be gone but the main ones are still there.

What about bar width between the two bikes? I’m considering going a little narrower on my 2019 Trance 2’s 780mm width.

Honestly I like them both. On the local trails with steep up and down I prefer the 29 a tad more because of the extra pedal clearance... In the mountains I could go with either one.
Thanks Clint. You've convinced me that the Stumpjumper, but with higher end Fox suspension, will be my next ride. Possibly just my perception but it certainly looked as if you were climbing a little easier on the Giant, but rolling a lot faster on the Specialized .. any truth to that? :)
Hmmm, not sure. I am starting to like the 51 mm fork offset on the stumpjumper better than the 44 mm offset. That of course has to do with my tighter local trails.
@@ClintGibbs Are you still riding the Stumpjumper in the "high" position on the flip chip? Wouldn't that make the HT angle steeper on the Stumpjumper than the Trance too?
Where is this trail? I’m coming to the area in a couple weeks and would love to ride this.
This Trail is only open twice a year during the race weekend. Which is a shame since it's 5 minutes from my house. Santos which is about 50 minutes south of here is very similar in some sections.
Is that an old quarry at 2min? If it is, I wouldn't get within about 10m of the crest, likely to be unstable. But, yeah, 13 year old me would've been all over it too :)
Update, I see it is. I would not get too close to the crest of the wall. Could be crumbly. Also, it could be clear because of acid leachate.....

Personally I would at the very least demo the medium and large in the parking lot before buying. I am 6'2 and am on the fence between sizes like you. I went with the xl over the large because I have a longer upper body.

Used to do a lot. Our local trail system is a state park and doesn't allow riding after sunset 😕
You said something about trying enduro with Dawson, witch bike would you use?
Either one would work. If the trail is rougher I would lean towards the stumpjumper since it has more travel.
One problem I was having with the stumpy is wandering and lifting front end when climbing steep stuff. I changed to only a single spacer under the stem and and it made a big difference not sure if ya tried that but might improve those steep climbs
I had that problem. Changed to a larger frame, and that fixed it.

Come ride trails in Northern New England to see really rocky, rooty and choppy trails - many of our trails are extreme teeth-rattlers. ;)

Clint Gibbs - similar in many respects, though the trails here tend to be steeper in ascent and tighter in the turns. We cram a lot into smaller spaces.
First you are animal to be able to ride after a 50 miler is unreal..

It's definitely stiff and has been maintenance-free. I don't feel it's quite as plush as a fox but still I like it.
Clint Gibbs thanks. I’m debating on expert vs comp. as of today the comp is on sale ($4520 down to $3770)but half of the discount from specialized will be a gift card so 4145 out the door with a $375 gift card later.
Do you see the expert as worth the difference in that price? LBS is quoting expert at $4700.

If you had to pick one bike which would it be, the specialized SJ or the Trance Adv Pro 1? I haven't watched many of your videos but I kind of sensed that you were really excited when you did the first look on the Giant Pro 1 and during the the pre ride and that you really wanted to love the Giant but was somewhat disappointed. Your excitement was evident during the first look and pre-ride but was mild during the actual ride. I thought it was interesting that you joyously said how you love both bikes, but that joyous feeling only occurred while you were riding the Specialized. It feels to me that you like the Specialized better but trying to stay politically correct and remain loyal to Giant.
Actually, on most of my local trails I would lean towards the Giant because it is more small bump compliant and a little bit more comfortable to ride. Also feels a little bit more snappy on the tighter trails. The longer travel of the specialized has its advantages on drops and on bigger hits. I really need to take both bikes up to the mountains to decide which one I would keep it. I also like the Fox shock on the Giant.

I ride trails with trees and some narrow passages, how much can I comfortably cut the 780mm handle bar without having any handling issues, in your opinion? If I cut an inch from both sides, around 50mm reducing the bar to 730mm, would that be a bad idea? Thanks
@@avikoren2 I would definitely ride for a while with the bars at full width before you cut them. I love the width of these bars and personally I would not cut them.

Is there a big difference between the trance 29 1 (Carbon) and the 2 (aluminum)?
Weight, stiffness and small chatter absorption. The carbon will have a nicer ride but I've ridden aluminum bikes for years and fully enjoyed them.

Trance has slightly less pedal bob due to the maestro suspension. Staying in a saddle pedal bob is minimal on both.
The stump jumper does not sound as rattling as the Trance... it seems to me as I rewatch the video.
so why is this trail closed 90% of the year?
It’s on private land. He only opens it for race events where the promoter can provide insurance

Hailes trails near Newberry. It's only open to weekends out of the year which is a real bummer.
For a trail thats only open 2 times a year it’s pretty well worn in.

The JET9 or RKT9? For me the JET9 as a trail bike beats both of these.
@@ClintGibbs good morning ! I am looking at the nicer Rip RDO 2 star sram Sx eagle in the bike bling website and I think it’s a good price for the components and the frame . We ride trails from easy to intermediate on the central coast , like demo flow trails in Soquel Ca or Santa Cruz Ca and mostly Fort Ord national monument . I tried my friends Trance 29 3 and like you said in your video it’s feels good and smoth . Like pedaling uphill also . Would you recommend the Rip 9?
@@JoseGarcia-ci7tb the RIP will feel a little bit more sluggish than the trance but it's going to be a lot more capable on the downhills. If you're using it mainly for a trail application you may want to look at the jet. But if you really want to hit some gnarly downhills it's definitely a great bike. Still pedals very well with niner's CVA suspension.

Interesting... I demoed the Trance last year and found it extremely boring... I will have to give it another try this coming Demo day. (maybe the newer model is better?)
