    5 decades ago, the standard all-purpose bino was 8x30, and even back then they had known for a long time that 8x was what gave you the best results if you did a lot of serious observing. Nowadays we have lighter materials like magnesium and high-strength plastic, and better types of glass that allow us to make thinner and lighter lenses and prisms (not to speak of MUCH better lens coatings), so the standard is 40-42 mm objective lenses because that size bino is now light enough to hold up and not have your arms get wobbly after a minute. It collects more light, so it's better in low light or at night.
    But we also have a choice: 8 times or 10 times (and some other choices if you want to be extra special). 10x proved profitable for the manufacturers of binoculars, because which read-blooded American doesn't want just a little more size? Well, the optics firms are ready to sell it to you, and the 10x is most likely the exact same binocular as the 8x except for the ocular assembly.
    Let's compare: With the 10x your target appears 25% bigger, and the apparent area it covers is even 56% bigger. All your arm shakes also appear 25% larger, and as he said so well in the video, because of that it's pretty much a wash for how much you can discern. So your target appears 56% bigger, but the same amount of light makes that bigger image, so the image's surface brightness is only 64% of the surface brightness of the seemingly smaller image you get with an 8x optic - not so good if you don't have much light. Your field of view also gets 20% narrower with the 10x, allowing you to see only 64% of the area you can see with the 8x binos. And another little quirk of the laws of optics, the higher your magnification, the shallower your depth of field, so you will be doing more frequent focus adjustments.
    Other than image size, the 8x has nothing but advantages, but the urge to have more magnification is strong even when you know better. You will need to do some observing before you realize that the size of your image is not the all-deciding factor for how much you can see. Most important are two other things: one, the quality of the optical system - does it give you a SHARP image with tons of contrast and color definition and an almost 3-D effect? How small a detail can you see? Two, how well does it handle - can you grab it comfortably, is the focus wheel where your hands expect it, and how lightweight does it appear? How long can you look through it and keep your image steady, and how easily and precisely can you adjust the focus, diopter, eyecups and hinge? Only after those two points are checked off should you consider magnification.
    One problem: unless you have a lot of experience with various binoculars, you cannot judge those things very well. Every view through a binocular will initially look good! That's why you need a situation where you can compare them side by side on the same target under the same lighting conditions (and you should select some dim lighting because that is where the wheat really separates from the chaff). Chances are the binoculars you know have been fine for years, and you were 99% happy with them. Then you look through a really good pair, and suddenly you realize that your old binos were pretty bad in comparison. Comparison really is the name of the game if you are in the market for new binoculars. But ideally, before you even start comparing binocular models, do some serious observing with the old ones you likely have available. Try to get the absolute maximum of detail, contrast and color out of the objects you observe. Train your eyes, and train your brain to wring all the possible information out of the image you see. Become a trained observer who does not only look at an image but who is able to wring the maximum amount of detail out of that same image!
    And just as said in the video: start with a regular old entry-level binocular, which you may already have or can easily afford. Learn to use that really well, and start saving while you train yourself in this way. Only when you have gone as far as you can possibly go with the entry-level ones and you know you will continue to use binoculars - then you may go and hunt for the best, and you will be able to tell which one is the best for you!
    And a pro tip: when you find the one binocular that is the very best for you and outperforms everything else, make sure you buy that very unit! Manufacturers make them to more or less stringent specifications (the more pricey, the more stringent), but even for high-grade optics, here and there the god of optics Ernst Abbe blesses a particular instrument, and it ends up performing significantly better than even other units of the very same model. Heads up, and good luck!

      As far as I know there's one slight misconception here.
      The 8*42 has an exit pupil of 5.25mm, the 8*42 has an exit pupil of 4.2mm. I believe the brightness of both those areas will be exactly the same, only one is wider than the other.
      Not brighter but wider.
      But this only improves the viewing experience if the pupil of the user is dilated/open more than 4.2mm.
      If the user has a pupil dilated/open more than 4.2mm than he will be better off with the 8*42 but otherwise there won't be any difference in brightness because the bonus light won't hit the retina.
      Elder people for instance might not be able to dilate their pupils that far and thus they shouldn't prefer the 8*42 based on their better low light perf.
      That's how I remember it. What do you think ?

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  4 месяца назад +2

      @@claudej8805 I have heard that before about age and pupil dialation. However I always looked at it like this. The human pupil adjusts to available light. And the 5.2 gathering puts more light in the bino. More light in the bino is easier for the user to see.

However, 10x42 is the Goldilocks one for me: it gets me in closer whilst also having a decent field of view, without the shaking I got with 12x50.

    The other downfall of 10x vs 8x is also less field of view as well. I agree that 10x is more of a specialty glass and frankly people would be better off stepping up to a 12x or spotting scope if 6-8x isn’t enough. Anything over 8x needs to be stabilized

    I own a pair of 12x36 Canon image stabilized binoculars and wouldn't trade them in for anything. They provide plenty of light in almost every situation with a slight disadvantage during twilight hours, provide way better magnification and are rock steady without the need of a tripod or having to lock arms in an awkward posture. The only improvement I'd wish for is for better close focus.

    Steiner IMO have been the clearest binoculars I've ever looked through regardless of brand. I wish I could have justified the expense of a couple of the higher end models. I was lucky and bought a pair of Steiner Military Marine 7x50 binoculars at a gun show many years ago. I used those on third watch as a patrol officer. They were amazing at night. I couldn't believe the light gathering ability they had. The other benefit of this model was that after you adjusted the eye pieces to your eye's, the binoculars were now focused regardless of distance. Much later I bought a pair of compact Burris Signature Select 10x32. They were clear, but the 10 power magnification was at times difficult to stabilize. I wish now that I had gotten the 8 power model.

    Currently trying to decide between the NL pure 8x42 and 10x42. I’m leaning more toward the 8x42 after watching the vid. 80% of my hunting will be in the East for white tail, but 20% will be Texas and Wyoming for bigger game.
    The Swarovski NL pure 10x42 has about the same FOV as the 8x42EL, so it’s kind of a tough choice because I kinda want 1 pair of binos to cover all my hunting.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  Год назад +1

      The 10x will be harder to hold steady with one hand. That's the only difference. Personally I'd go with the 8s but can't go wrong either way. Or go with the 10s and supplement with a cheap pair of vortex 8s for some of the tight eastern stuff where the quality is not as important.

    I disagree about skipping the middle stuff. That’s actually where the value is. With lens technology these there actually isn’t a huge improvement from mid level to top level glass. In other words there is a much bigger difference between a $200 set of binoculars and a $4-600set of binoculars than there is between a $4-600 set of binoculars and a $1000 set of binoculars. I would rather have a mid level 8x set of binoculars and a mid level 12x binocular or spotting scope than just a high end set of binoculars for the same amount of money.

      @@SamkoTradBow That's your (probably exclusive) view. Because physically it is very logical that to improve a cheaper glass and fabrication can be easily improved while it takes a lot of research to improve on an already good glass! You nearing what is physically and technically possible.
      I'd rather buy a pair of 8x42 GPO Passion ED bins (for around $400) than those Vortex (for around $200)! Not only because the GPO ones are superior to those Vortex but also because those GPO are almost as good as binoculars of a $1000! Bad question really... You see it a lot, but, the two binoculars are for different purposes and different applications, and both have advantages and disadvantages over the other. The 8x will offer better light gathering with its near 5mm exit pupil and therefore more generous eyebox and less shake/ bigger field of view. But, the 10x will be better for observing more shy and timid nature at distance, and in more detail - especially SMALLER animals or birds, better for general purpose use (e.g. viewing yachting and shipping offshore), and still a reasonably generous 4.2mm exit pupil, but you will need better quality high light transmission binoculars to minimise the light losses (Zeiss, Leica and Swarovski are great for that, especially, but very expensive). 8 x is better for tracking fast moving nature, so birders tend to favour this magnification. I own 10x as I find them to be excellent for all purposes, and I got Swarovski because of their exceptionally good control over chromatic aberrations, colour fringing and their class leading eye relief (I wear glasses), and close focusing distance (under 5ft)

      @@SamkoTradBow yes sir they are and the VIP warrantees incredible, I see the limited part of your warrantee on the Swarovski expired 6 years ago and only the internal optics are covered still that's scary, if you stood on the side of a mountain and you dropped your gear bag 100' off of it and both those bino's were in the bag after about 3 weeks your diamondbacks would be your new good binoculars....wow.

      @@Frank-uf2vn yeah but that would be my fault and not a warranty claim I'd make. It's great vortex does offer unlimited lifetime. But at the cost and precision build requirements of Swarovski I completely under stand why it's a 10 year warranty. If something is wrong after 10 years its self inflicted, neglect, or abuse. If I lost or broke my Swarovski today I'd probably buy another pair. But I would have no problem using my vortex for a couple years while I saved up the money for the Swarovski.

I am comparing them to the Vortex Diamondback 8 X 42's, but I don't think Vortex uses ED in the Diamondback model.. Any opinions? Thanks for your time........
