    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Words & Music: trad. / Arr.: Andy Irvine
[Learnt from the singing of Brigid Tunney of Belleek, Co. Fermanagh]
As I roved out on a bright May morning
To view the meadows and the flowers gay
Whom should I spy but my own true lover
As she sat under yon willow tree
I took off my hat and I did salute her
I did salute her most courageously
When she turned around, well the tears fell from her
Saying: "False young man, you have deluded me"
"A diamond ring I own I gave you
A diamond ring to wear on your right hand"
"But the vows you made, love, you went and broke them
And married the lassie that had the land"
"If I married the lassie that had the land, my love
It's that I'll rue till the day I die
When misfortune falls, sure no man can shun it
    I was blindfolded, I will ne'er deny"
Now at nights when I go to my bed of slumber
The thoughts of my true love run in my mind
When I turn around to embrace my darling
Instead of gold, sure 'tis brass I find
And I wish the Queen would call home her army
From the West Indies, Amerikay and Spain
And every man to his wedded woman
In hopes that you and I shall meet again

I deleted a previous comment irretrievable due to over-exuberance but he is I remember the most under-estimated musician/composer of either side of the Atlantic and all other oceans. A treasure to be treasured.

He totally amazes me when he combines vocal, bouzouki and harmonica. I am quite sure he has 2 musical brains. It is very difficult to play like he does, sing songs with so many verses and throw in harmonica breaks. Truly a musical genius..

I was at this performance and it was indeed a wonderful night. Andy is a musician of the purest kind I believe he would perform for the love of the music alone if he did not need to survive :) What a Gentlemen and a musical genius :)

Do a search for Andy Irvine Planxty. You will get hits, old recordings but wonderful stuff.

Certainly my pleasure to upload. Not only was a treat to see Andy in such and intimate environment but then to get to edit it. Spent a lot of time watching his fingering while editing!

Check out some of our stuff, we have fun. We bill ourselves as Kinda Keltic, a real mix of Irish, Scottish and American traditional music. Our channel is Three Times Through, same channel that listed the Irvine stuff.

Two brains, one for the voice and one for the hands.

John Cleese surely wouldn't dream of shouting "Shut that bloody bouzouki up!" here.

Bill Keith (Famous Banjo Player) once told me that you need to practice the fingering until it just comes out almost without thought and eventually that evolves into mixing the pieces together, without thought. Probably easier to just have a second brain like Andy!
