Princess Mononoke is one of the best movies - of any genre - to address the dangers of industrialization and ignoring the natural balance of the world. Sometimes myths can express deep truths that we forget in daily life, and all the Ghibli movies are heavy on myth-making.
While "Grave of the Fireflies" was written and directed by Isao Takahata, it was also an expansion of a short story by Akiyuki Nosaka, who lost a sister to illness, his adoptive father to the firebombings, and an adoptive sister to malnutrition in the wake of them, and was his way of dealing with his grief and survivor's guilt.
Porco Rosso is not a WWII era fighter pilot he is a WWI era fighter pilot. In his dream where he sees the spirits of the lost men of his unit alongside the enemy flying off to the afterlife. They are all flying Biplanes the two sets of wings stacked on top of each other and the main propeller engine. The movie itself is set in 1929 after the rise of Mussolini's fascist government. He is hunted by Fascist government agents because he refuses to fight for the government.

I love All theses movies. I got my daughters (now 16 and 18) hooked when they were little. We go to the movies to see them now. The theater here plays a few a year. My car is even named Kodama … from the movie princess Mononoke.
I'm actually watching several Ghibli movies throughout the summer (just ones I hadn't seen before, and not as many as I'd like because I couldn't afford too many). Just last night I watched Pom Poko and now it's probably my second favorite after Spirited Away (which was the first Ghibli movie I ever saw).

Grave of the Fireflies may be the best film put out by Studio Ghibli - and one of the least viewed. Certainly one of the greatest war films (although it is anti-war) of all time.

my first Ghibli movie was Princess Mononoke.
