- HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
LEARN: Understand what is happening in the world around you. Protests don't appear out of a vacuum; they're a result of decades of oppression, brutal mistreatment by law enforcement, and the murder of innocent people. As a place to start, consider watching this video from Trevor Noah ( • George Floyd, Minneapo... ), read this thread from President Obama ( / 1267534333067382784 ) and learn what the Black Lives Matter movement stands for: (blacklivesmatter.com/what-we-...)
DONATE: Donate to organizations fighting for systemic change, such as the NAACP at www.naacpldf.org/ ---- If you are unable to donate money, please consider donating your time by watching this video from Zoe Amira, where all advertising proceeds will go towards advocacy, funeral costs, and bail funds • Black Lives and Voices...
VOTE: Register to vote in US federal, state, and LOCAL elections at vote.gov/ --- There is so much more to government than just the presidency.

modern sports rivalries WISH they had the amount of petty animosity that Genoa had towards Venice
All of Europe's knife friendly rivalries are nothing compared to modern sport rivalries
Or imagine the Blue/ Green rivalries of Constantinople working today.
Seriously the only thing that had that much petty animosity was the Byzantine Blues vs Greens.
The rivalry between the Veneti/Venetoi (Latin and Greek, respectively for the Blues) and the Prasiniani/Prasinoi (literally "Leek-Greens" from the specific green dye used) actually began waaaaaay back in Western Rome, even if their most famous episode was the Nika revolts in Constantinople. Rome's original political parties/political machines in the early republic were the Russati/Rousioi (Reds) and the Albati/Leukoi (Whites), the other two chariot racing stables, but over time, specifically during the late republic and early empire when there was an actual *gasp* ideologically-based political divide between the Populares (Populists) and Optimates (literally the "Best Men", also known as the Elitists or Conservatives) the Red and White stables' rivalry became overshadowed by the rivalry between the younger (but still founded in the early republic) Blue and Green stables, and ofc once the Empire had been going long enough that ideological political factions largely stopped mattering (the emperor either agreed with them or didn't) the super-popular Blues and Greens were ready to once again fill the void of Romans wanting a reason to hate each other on feast days.
Merritt Animation Israel actually has that. Most sports teams were founded by political parties and are politically affiliated. That’s why so many of the tea,s all have the same names over and over.

"But they had just now remembered that the other side of the alps exist"
I WROTE MY LAST TERM PAPER ON KARL IV. ITALY POLITICS AND I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS SLANDER.
The emperors of the HRE *knew* the Italian part of the empire existed and they wanted it. The Staufer Kings wanted it but failed. The Luxembourger Kings wanted it, but Henry VII. Methods weren't ... quite adapted to the reality of politics (just claiming the Regnum Italicum doesn't fly so well with cities that been independent for so long) and Karl already had said goodbye to the illusion of traditional Regnum Italicum, but wanted to establish a more secure Imperial hold on Italy in 1354/55 nonetheless. That failed however when riots errupted in Pisa and made using that city as a stronghold quite impossible, so Karl called it a day. (Sadly, I know nearly nothing about his second time coming to Italy in the 1360s. I focused on his Romzug of 1354/55.)
The reason why it was also hard for the emperors to establish factual reign in Italy was because they had a wholeass Empire north of the alps to take care of. And unlike France or England, there was no stable center of power, no administrative center. That basically switched places with every new imperial house, so the emperors, especially in late medieval times, had enough trouble securing their position in the empire north of the alps, so Italy had to wait. However, when the Habsburger at some point snatched the crown for what was the beginning of the rest of the Empire, they had decades, centuries to solidate their power, to build an administrative system - so they had actual ressources to take care of Italy! (Which in this case meant eating up Milan and then also every other Northern city state and territory they could get their greedy little Austrian hands on.)
As someone who grew up and still lives in one of those contested corners of Italy you know more than I do and I thought I knew quite a bit😂
@@nikki607 Oh, ciao dalla Germania! I'm a history student in Germany and JUST this semester had my basic medieval lectures, so I know some basics, with a heavy focus on the HRE. Plus, I love Italy (the South especially) and the entire fact that both Northern Italy and what is now Germany was so splintered and divided is fascinating to me. So I'm also always open to learn more about it!
@@SarahWolverine Hiya back from South Tyrol! Yeah you definitely know more than me😂 all I can present with is HS knowledge (Matura in 2 week RIP me) and a penchant to remember the weirdest historical facts
Ahoj, I guess, from Bohemia. I'd like to remind you that the future Emperor Charles IV spend few years as the ruler of the Luxemburgish estates in the Northern Italy, and in 1350 after he was already a Czech and German King, he was badly injured there during a tournament. If I remember correctly, his jaw was broken into pieces by a jousting spear there....
@@nikki607 Ah, a Tiroler_in! (Tyrolian? Tirolano/a?) I actually didn't make the connection that Tyrol used to be its own territory, its own duchy, at one point in time before I started to research. It was just always a part of Austria or Italy for me that had a specific name and I never questioned why. Looking back, I feel like a dumbass but that's fine, we learn through being challenged.
And I was like you when I was about to graduate HS two years ago, full of HS history & political knowledge and a strong affection for history, especially local one. Viel Erfolg beim Matura! (South Tyrol is german speaking, right? Ah, buona fortuna as well for good measure :) )

Another day another Pope Fight.
My favourite fact about Julius II is that when the Michaelangelo sculpted him carrying a bible, he got mad and shouted ‘what do I know of bibles, I am a warrior, sculpt me with my sword’.
6:48 I’ve actually seen that elephant statue. Last year, when my family and I were staying in Rome as part of our Italian vacation, that elephant was on the base of the obelisk near the pantheon and just outside Santa Maria sopra Minerva, just near the AirBnB we were staying at. The facade itself did not seem like a lot to look at, but the interior was an absolutely stunning piece of Gothic architecture, and I’m told the church was built atop a temple to Athena and Isis.
Wait, a temple to _Isis_ ? Athena/Minerva, I understand. But since when was the Egypitian Pantheon venerated in Rome?
